Review: Portland-based "sound artist" Best Available Technology has notched up numerous album releases over the last four years, including acclaimed cassette outings on Opal Tapes, Astro:Dynamics and his own Working Nights. Here he releases a rare vinyl EP, serving up four tracks of experimental house and techno. Naturally, there's much to enjoy, from the strange shuffle of the warped electric piano riffs and metronomic kick-drums of "The Astrarium", and the drone style hypnotic textures of closer "Post Pressure", to the ultra-deep house/minimal techno fusion of skewed opener "Twisted Ladder". The EP's other excursion, the dark and claustrophobic, experimental techno outing "Robert Damiens", is similarly potent.

Review: Simbad Stanislas has enjoyed a fine start to 2017, with copies of his first outing on Funkineven's Apron label simply flying off the shelves. Here he transfers to Lo Recordings to deliver another collection of eccentric, off-kilter, hard-to-pin-down dancefloor treats. Stanislas' stock-in-trade is combining dusty, MPC-powered house rhythms with quirky, left-of-centre sounds. This fusion can be heard loud and clear on "Ping Pong Love", where a soulful vocal sample is combining with weirdo electronics and thrusting analogue noises, and amongst the intergalactic synths, bubbly electronics and bizarre spoken word samples of ambient closer "Message 045". There's a slightly breezier, break-of-dawn feel to the overwhelmingly loved-up World Air Hybird Remix of "Ping Pong Love", while "Backstreet" is a jolly, jammed-out chunk of loose-limbed deep house positivity.

Review: Ohio born producer John Roberts returns under a different pseudonym named Body Four on his own Brunette Editions and follows up last years Plum LP under his birth name, as well as two previous full length outing on Hamburg label Dial: namely his stunning debut Glass Eights. On this self titled album under the alias, Roberts once again utilises both electronic and acoustic sources, merging both classical and dance music influences, as well as some some experimental and musique concrete approaches on what could be his most challenging album yet. Overall the opus' lo-fi and tape saturated aesthetic adds to its atmosphere, as jagged junkyard rhythms thump around beneath layers of dust and his gritty sound sources writhe in low-bit sample rates and endless layers of time based effects. At times gentle or subtle and rather quite abrasive at other times, all in all this collection of tracks (which on average come in at around a couple of minutes) cover a great variety of moods and grooves.

Review: Last year, Astral Industries released The Bamboo Recordings, a sublime, non-stop ambient voyage from obscure Dutch outfit The Chi Factory based around recordings Hanyo van Oosterom made while living in a cave on the Greek island of Palmos in the early 1980s. This follow-up contains sounds, textures and musical elements recording during the same period, which van Oosterom has been tinkering with, on and off, since the early '90s. Like its predecessor, The Kallikatsou Recordings - named in tribute to the "sacred mountain" the producer lived beneath on Palmos - joins the dots between Eno style ambience, Stockhausen style sound collage, the sample-heavy brilliance of The KLF's Chill Out, the humidity of Finis Africae, and contemporary drone productions. If anything, it's even better than The Bamboo Recordings.

Review: The latest artist to delve into Conrad Schnitzler's vast archive of synthesizer sounds and Con-Struct new tracks is Pole, AKA dub-tronica stalwart Stefan Betke. In the liner notes, Betke admits to never warming to Schnitzler's brand of synthesizer experimentalism, despite respecting the German pioneer's vast body of work. Yet despite these misgivings, Betke has produced an impressive set which melds some of Schnitzler's trademark electronics - woozy, evocative, out-there and occasionally hugely challenging - with his own glitch-heavy rhythms and dub techno inspired textures. The result is a collection of finely tuned tracks that effortlessly joins the dots between 1970s electronica, '90s IDM, and Betke's distinctly dub-wise production style.

Review: Before submerging himself in the world of electronic-acoustic fusion in 1977, Klauss Weiss had been best known as one of Germany's leading jazz drummers. 1978's Time Signals - here reissued on vinyl for the first time since - was not his first attempt to fuse early analogue synthesizers and home-made electronics with his own jazz-leaning drumming, but it probably remains his most successful exploration of this style. It's an album that successfully distils many influences - ambient, krautrock, Tangerine Dream, space rock, the Radiophonic Workshop, and so on - into a wealth of short, library music style tracks that impress with their imaginative approach to musical fusion. Throw in some killer drumming from Weiss - including some turntablist-friendly breaks - and you have an odd but thoroughly entertaining album.

Review: Yu Asaeda's been putting out a whole range of quality, bass-centric sounds under the name ENA since the late 2000s, but these have come out on a rather sporadic basis. Appearances for the infamous 7even Recordings was followed by material on Samurai Horo, the excellent Hidden Hawaii and, more recently, the Samurai label's offshoot, Horo. Divided: Body is so much more than a mere 'bass' EP, and it actually manages to veer off into some pretty strange and imperceptible sounds that remind us of the material emanating from the PAN consortium. For instance, the opening "11th Divided" manages to create a raw, loose groove out of fractured synth sounds, which is followed up nicely by the swarming drones operating in the higher ends of "12th Divided". Over on the flip, "13th Divided" launches a subtle yet hefty groove made up of what sound like bass pops made from a monophonic synth, which leaves "14th Divided" to linger in its dreary pool of fuzzy drones and washed-up sonics. A massive, merited TIP!

  4. F-on - "Alpengluhen" (10:50)
Review: Up to this point, the only artists to have surfaced out of the Antimatter label have been F-on and Bule. This is is no way a criticism. In fact, we like it this way, and are secretly hoping that these two minds keep on coming up with this dope material. That's because the Antimatter sound is very much their own; it's a strange and singular style of electronic dance music that doesn't pretend to be a part of any particular sub-genre. Moreover, although the two don't actually collaborate on these tunes, they've successfully managed to conjure a similar sound to one another, an abstract and temperamental shade of house with a vividly loose edge. From F-on's "Take Care Of Yourself" through to Bule's "Photon", we're taken on a journey through mid-tempo beats that have been utterly engulfed in oceans of vast and endless pads circling in mid-air. It almost feels like dub-techno, but it's still one step behind. One place lower in the evolutionary food chain. They're a bunch of head-spinners, and we're sure that we'll see more of these two in the near future.

Review: Until now, Cologne artist and selector Lena Willikens has largely been know for her Djing skills, both the range and dynamism shown when she is in a club, or the more conceptual approach taken with her Sentimental Flashbacks show for Comeme Radio. It's the Cologne label overseen by Matias Aguayo that facilitates the first tangible productions from Willikens in the shape of the dark and dystopian Phantom Delia. Produced with the assistance of Aguayo, the six tracks here are a perfect balance of the rhythmic quirkiness that seems to characterise many a Comeme release and Willikens' own grasp of the odder strains of club music. Traxx's Nation label is offered as a comparison by Comeme, and it's probably Beau Wanzer whose music is closest in spirit to the sound Willikens explores here - excellent music for those selectors that like to strange up the dancefloor.

Review: Oliver Ho's Broken English Club has been a revelation of sorts since his first release appeared on Jealous God back in 2014. What's particularly impressive about this artist is how he successfully managed to align himself with all the right labels; all the right labels for his particular form of techno, including Cititrax, a label we have much love for. The man returns to Regis' and Silent Servant's Jealous God for the label's sixteenth instalment, and "Accidents & Romance" kicks the EP off with a familiarly rolling bassline that hints at the emergence of 303 tones without ever unleashing a full blockade of acid. On the B-side, "Country Life" enters the realm of nightmares thanks to sharp, bruising bass stabs and an ominous swarm of voices, leaving the foreboding elements of "Private Death" to linger in their own pool of broken drum patters and percussion shots. This is a keeper, and probably one of the best JG missiles yet!

  3. Wrong Planet (6:26)
Review: Terence Fixmer and Douglas McCarthy are what you would class as big dawgs in the house and techno game. The two have been present and very much in the frontline since the turn of the millennium, but their collaborative project under the Fixmer/McCarthy banner has been more of a recent conception. They've released plenty of effective dance material for Fixmer's own Planet Rouge imprint so, it was time to branch out, and what better way to do that then release an EP for Adam X's gnarly Sonic Groove? The label's been a staple of the NYC techno diet since the 90s, and it really is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down as it reaches its 30 year birthday. There's two cuts to the electrifying "Chemicals" tune, a first version with the vocals intact, and a second instrumental cut; the base of the tune is high-powered techno with a bubbling electro bass line, and a malevolent flurry of punked-out vocalism. "Wrong Planet" is a stranger sort of beast, a tune that lurks in the depths of the techno underbelly, but that has no problems in launching continuous arial threats in the form of sinister screams and spectral melodies. Enter if you dare...

Review: Alberich and Lussuria are no strangers to the deep, treacherous caves of the Hospital Productions portfolio, and we couldn't think of a pair more suited to the catalogue than these two shadowy characters. Classed as ambient/drone, we think that the duo's sound travels much deeper than that and in fact, we would place this sort of material in the same bracket as noise artists like Robert Turman or Aaron Dilloway. "Continuum" is an unsettling affair, a bundle of drones moving stealthily across a landscape of solitary distortion, and both "Antechamber" and "Anti-Renaissance" do their best to increase the momentum. "Untenable" opens the B-side with a dark cloud of sonics floating in mid-air, whereas "Alabaster" drowns in its own cool, meditative wave of smoke, and "Voice Of The Dagger" enters the abyss with the help of some truly cinematic swarm of unsettling, and beautifully archaic synths.

Review: Having come to light on labels such as SD Records and his own Mystica Tribe, Taka Noda heads over to Canadian label Silent Season for his debut album, capitalising on his emergent career in the field of dub-influenced downtempo with his most complete artistic statement to date. From the spacious stalk of "On The Lookout" to the edgy piano delay of "Peek-a-Boo", this is the work of a man who has immersed himself in the tradition of classic dub music, but not at the expense of bringing things up to date. The loose, live and natural feel of the album is testament to Noda's skills in the production department, not to mention his instinct for a killer sub-heavy rhythm.
