  3. Girls In Uniform (Trevor Jackson remix) (6:47)
Review: The Girls In Uniform 12" sees Poni Hoaxer Nicolas Ker and Versatile boss Gilbert Cohen revisit their Aladdin project. Legend has it heartbreak brought the two to form Aladdin, seeking solace in making music together after being dumped by their respective girlfriends. After a debut album back in 2011, the project was put on the shelf but the pair decided to get back in the studio at the behest of "a well-known energy drink" for a session with some killer musicians. The result on "Girls In Uniform" is a strange brew of rock, dub, and kraut and sounds wholly suited to Versatile, as do the accompanying versions from Trevor Jackson and Cohen.. The latter's dub version under the Graal alias is apparently one of the first recordings to roll out of his new Amsterdam studio!

  1. Pale (18:42)
  2. Calling (20:13)
Review: Pale Calling sees Black Truffle boss and all round experimental maven Oren Ambarchi collaborating with Kassel Jaeger and James Rushford for an album consisting of two long form compositions laid down in Paris back in 2014. Featuring killer artwork from Sunn O))) man Stephen O'Malley, and mastered by Rashad Becker, Pale Calling is aptly described as "a mysterious space of slowly cycling electronics, distracted vocal mumbles and often unidentifiable field recordings." It arrives in a busy year for Ambarchi's Black Truffle following long players from Charlemagne Palestine and improvisational trio AMM, and proves to be a delicious listen that will appeal to fans of the recent Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Felicia Atkinson album.

  1. Aeon Fusion I (2016 Stretched edit)
  2. Evocation Part II (remastered)
Review: The UK's newly inaugurated Future Primitive label holds a candle to its name by unearthing two Leo Anibaldi productions from deep within the Roman's voluminous back catalogue. The two-track 12" debut sees Anibaldi provide the label with a contemporary 'Stretched Edit' of 1994 production "Fusion 1", a cut lifted from the Aeon EP originally released on the now defunct Italian label, ACV. Future Primitive has also given ambient number "Evocation Part II" a full remaster and B-side privileges, honouring an esoteric production from Anibaldi's Void LP that was originally released on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label in 1996.

Review: James Clements continues his explorations into the depths of the grey zone as ASC with The Farthest Reaches double pack on Auxiliary. Samurai Music's Presha has excitedly called these four tracks "a definitive musical statement from one of the most important electronic musicians of our era," and who are we to argue with him? Making full usage of the format and available space, this is ASC in exploratory mode across a quartet of deep ten minute plus productions that have it all; sound design, atmosphere, groove, bass weight. To simply call these epic is selling The Farthest Reaches short!

Review: Chester Giles and Seb 'Vessel' Gainsborough launched their ASDA project last year via a well-received 10" on the F*ckPunk imprint the latter runs with Ossia. Here they follow it up with a decidedly fuzzy mini-album on No Corner. The duo's formula - poetic, Sleaford Mods-style spoken vocals over crusty beats and wild, distorted electronics - leaves enough room for quiet eclecticism, as well as intense experimentation. As a result, The Abyss is an impressive set, with vocalist Giles musing on one-night-stands over metallic beats on "Universal Themes", discussing blood-stained bus-stops and social unease on the clarinet-laden ambient creepiness of "The Desire For Light & Stars & Jubilant Songs", and sticking two fingers up at the world on the dense, distorted intensity of opener "Killer Of Men".

  1. Asis Part 3 (14:03)
Review: Wania come through with the oddness once again! It's not clear who is behind ASIS, though there are breadcrumbs of info out there that suggests the involvement of main players in Acido, Sex Tags and SUED. It certainly wouldn't surprise us if the name was a cloak for any number of Sex Tags associates to jam in the studio and lay down this 14 minute exercise in abstract sonics!! As with some of the recent Wania releases, "Asis Part 3" is cerebral stuff and we highly recommend it for the weekends you want to kick back and trip out in the company of some strange music. The more adventurous DJs out there might even find some room in the earliest moments of a club night to deploy "Asis Part 3" and lay down a marker for how deep you want to take it!

Review: Batu fairly owned 2015, launching his own label Timedance as well as landing killer blows for Beneath's Mistry and the excellent Hotline Recordings and this momentum has continued into 2016 with the wonderful Bleeper Feed for Dnuos Ytivil. That 12" landed at the end of January, but Batu clearly has some killer material stockpiled as demonstrated by the suitably named Monolith. Here, Batu presents three examples of his growing prowess for UK bass science, mangling techno into a form that can be described his own. The title track has a touch of that Acido oddness to it, mixed up with rugged UK flavours whilst "Reez" feels less concerned with the dance. Instead it's a chance for Batu to explore sound design and intricate patterns for drums and basslines. It's no surprise that PAN associate Lee Gamble was attracted to the idea of remixing this track, resulting in a wondrous hazy, dubwise fog.

Review: Given Chris Farrell's passion for supporting local talent, it was probably only a matter of time before he teased an EP out of fellow Bristol resident Bruce. The Hessle Audio affiliate is on fine form on The Trouble With Wilderness, utilizing both sides of the 12" to touch on a variety of moods and styles. The title track sits somewhere between throbbing Bristol techno, sparse electronica and drowsy deep house, with Bruce working wonders with only a handful of key elements. On the flip, you'll find the melancholic, heart-aching ambient chords and field recordings of "Waves (For Yasmin)", and "Summer's Got To End Sometime", a melancholic chunk of melodious deepness that counts among the producer's most evocative efforts to date.

Review: From DJ Spider & Marshallito's surreal and heavy throwdowns to Mix Mup's snaking drum workouts, Chemotex's noisy excursions to Ekman's industrial clout, the sound of The Trilogy Tapes has been distinctly geared towards loud, pounding club tackle recently. However Will Bankhead's label has always been much more than just a dancefloor vessel, as this new offering from Carl Gari and Abdullah Miniawy demonstrates. Carl Gari is a Munich-based group comprised of Jonas Friedlich, Jonas Yamer and Till Funke, who describe themselves as psychedelic ghetto rave. Miniawy meanwhile is a noted Egyptian chanter, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Madinet El-Fayoum. Reportedly recorded in Cairo over the course of a few days, the brief collaboration has manifested in a four-track 12" with the slow-creeping sonic dread of "Nayroz" and 12-minute "Al Weyasha" undoubted highlights.

Review: Ghostly International has picked up a lot as of late, and it's high time that this excellent label started to bring us new and exciting talent again. Here we have Com Truise - Tom Cruise's alias when he hangs around the scientology meets (just kidding!) - and five masterful slices of synth-heavy dance music. "Sunspot" is a delicate scorcher boasting a beautiful pattern of melodies, "Forgive" goes for the new age look and feel, "Diffraction" sits somewhere between disco and balearic, the title track "Silicon Tare" is the kind of beat-heavy tune you'd be listening to on a beach in LA, and "Du Zirconia" stutters its beats over a grainy bassline that recalls 1980's boogie. Sick.

Review: Back in 2014, Dutch Minimal Wave legend Danny 'Das Ding' Bosten released Sequencer, a cassette of recordings made using his own homebrew modular drum machine and a Casio SK1 loaded with a Mellotron sample. Issued by local Rotterdam label DeHef Tapes, it proved something of a cult addition to the small but deadly Das Ding discography. In a show of good faith, DeHef have licensed the four tracks to fellow Rotterdam crew Midlight for this limited, hand-stamped 10" edition which will delight the Das Ding fanatics who prefer their Bostenite on wax. Sequencer is not really comparable to the early Das Ding popularised by Minimal Wave, it's Bosten looking forward and sequential experimentation at its most rewarding. Fans of the more stripped down SUED stuff can probably vibe to this too!

Review: Dario Dell'aere cut his teeth in obscure Italian synth-pop outfits Ice Eyes and Fockewulf 90, before attempting to launch a solo career in 1985. While that didn't go all that swimmingly, his lone solo single, Eagles In The Night, has long been considered a hard-to-find Italo-disco classic. Here, it gets the re-issue treatment from Dark Entries, who as usual replicate the original track listing and artwork. Slower and more atmospheric than many Italo-disco tracks of the time, Eagles In The Night draws influence from eyeliner-clad new wave pop of the period, with Dell'aere's unusual English vocals stretching out over chiming melodies, bubbling synth lines and dreamy chords. The potency of the original production is confirmed by the superior Instrumental version lurking on the flip.

  4. Mazda (Killing Sound version - feat Rider Shafique & Bogues) (3:03)
Review: Aisha Devi's brilliant Of Matter And Spirit release from last year gets the remix treatment by a stellar cast here, merging her esoteric electronica weirdness into new hybrids. Irish duo Lakker turn "Anatomy of Light" into a freeform techno excursion with ferocious broken beats and Devi's vocals chopped and morphed into new forms. No Pain In Pop/New Ninja Tune signing Throwing Shade turn in a rendition of "Kim & The Wheel Of Life" that's ethereal as much as it is jagged and unusual. Knives associates Mind:Body:Fitness give "Mazda" a turnover that mutates it into some alien urban flavour much like their associates on Kuedo's label. Finally there's another version of the track by Bristol's Killing Sound featuring MC Rider Safique and Bogues exploring the dark side of bass music and truly exorcising the demons.

Review: Brussels-based twosome Different Fountains has made some of the most interesting electronic music of recent times, with their distinctive sound somehow joining the dots between moody outsider house, and experimental electronica. Here they present the third part of their Organism series. They begin with pool, a thrillingly bass-heavy fusion of dub-house rhythms, hissing cymbals, delay-laden electronics and horror-influenced late night creepiness. There's something a little less unsettling about dreamier flipside "Limbo Rift", whose bubbling beat patterns, chiming melodies, cut-up vocals and freaky chords nevertheless evoke mental images of paranoid late night rambles through deserted forests and abandoned housing estates.

Review: Kiwi bass head Epoch usually likes to dish out new material through his own Egyptian Avenue imprint, but he's been called up to serve his duties on Blacklist, and who could blame him for delivering the goods? Badminded, categorised on our system as 'deep dubstep', should actually be seen as the doorway between, or rather the key, between the distant planes that are electronica, new age and dubstep. Right, so we know what you're thinking, that's weird, right? But if you listen to the depth and richness of these eight slices of brain dynamite, you'll surely agree with us that Epoch's music goes way beyond the tight barriers of dubstep, and lands the listener into a wholly new sort of planet. You have to give it a go for yourself, what we can say is that it's warmly recommended.

Luckily, Facit are back and on the equally magnetic Waving Hands Records, boasting a daring six tunes of frost-wave like momma intended it to be. From "Krv" to "Indutrimusikvanner", we are exposed to a decadent world of romantic melancholia and eerie sexiness, a sound that has been perfected and one that is executed masterfully across six slabs of cybernetic pseudo disco.

Review: Fhloston Paradigm might seem like a shadowy name from some bedroom producer somewhere in London, but in case you didn't know, it's actually King Britt's alias (almost) strictly for Hyperdub. The UK producer has produced some of the best house and broken beat of the early 2000s, and he still remains a cult hero, a dangerously underrated artist from the commercial world. This newer sound contains aspects of his old work, but we can hear experimenting a lot more with the sonics and arrangements, so much so that "Nimoy" is a veritable genreless track, spitting out sick beats and waves of bass from all angles without any care in the world. "Return" is a sublime synth excursion without even a shadow of a kick drum, and "The Hour" follows suit with a mystical sea of warm harmonics and structured pad patterns. Recommended.

Review: A new Hidden Hawaii release has the ability to get our taste buds going and our mouths salivating from the first moment that we hear those warm glows of echo hit our ear drums. This is particularly true when it's coming from the likes of FLXK1 and DB1, two relatively unknown entities up to this day, and a pair of artists who truly understand the essence of dub techno. From the subaqueous bleeps and mechanical drums of "Track 1", through to the hollow, washed-out drones of "Track 2", and even contorted breakbeats of "Track 3" and "Track 4", this EP has everything you need for a full meditation session, whether that be in a club or on your headphones. No Apple buds, though, please.

Review: Post-drum and bass grey area explorers Ena (Japan) and FLXK1 from Berlin (aka Hidden Hawaii head honcho Felix K) team up for some sinister, industrial edged sound design excursions through the darklands. It bears all the hallmarks of what these two modern auteurs of dark experimental and deconstructed dub techno have brought to the table before: well executed metal textures, the most haunting and subversive of drones (sure!) but overall the most terrifying and polarising soundscapes this side of hell. With this type of music gaining a large following and many jumping on the bandwagon, it takes just one listen to this to see why these two are at the top of the game and raise the bar exceptionally high. For those that dare: this is essential listening.

  1. Masque (9:19)
  2. Peluche (9:29)
Review: German experimental electronics figure and Nonplace boss Bernd Friedman is back, this time on Doug Laurent's Risque imprint which has been a bit quiet until now. First track "Masque" is a sturdy minimal house jam with the immaculate and focused style of highgrade production found on Ricardo Villalobos or Uwe Schmidt's recordings. Nothing fancy or full throttle, just beauty in its restraint and execution. Second track "Peluche" somehow merges dub techno aesthetics with jazz sensibilities on this odd yet compelling fusion but we are talking about Burnt Friedman here; this guy has experimented with all kinds of crossover over the years and is what makes his work so compelling.

  6. Oxleas At Night (2:34)
Review: Badman and bad-ass bass producer Gage returns to the Crazylegs stable with six dastardly slices of machine-gun funk, and he's getting faster and nastier every time we hear form him. "Turbulence" is more of a bass-weighted noise tune than a dance banger - and we love it - while "Talon's Reach" contains more of a beat flex in its spine and some killer hardcore rave stabs; "Gruellin" sounds like the inside of an engine that's about to explode, and "Hyphema" is the sort of grime they listen to on Saturn - the cream of the crop in here and a massive tip! "Rochester Way" fires its percussion stabs away amid detuned keys and, lastly, "Oxleas At Night" pushes all boundaries and delivers a ticking time-bomb of a gutter track for the heads. Get to know.

Review: Dark Entries has always been rather canny when it comes to their Italo-disco reissues, often unearthing obscurities from one-shot artists who disappeared just as quickly as they arrived. Ghibli was one such artist. He only ever released one single, I'm Looking For You, back in 1985. That it still sounds fresh, despite its' obvious period features - bubbling, Bobby Orlando style synthesizer sequences, bold chords and a heavily accented Italian vocals - is testament to the skill of the record's original producer, Alfredo Baraldi. As with the original pressing, this Dark Entries edition comes back with the superior Instrumental version.

Review: Oliver Vereker was first introduced to as a shadowy, improvisational techno artist with a skill at making 4/4 dance music sound loose and spontaneous. Throughout the last couple of years, however, his sonic sketches have consistently dissolved, breaking down into thick layers of noise and power electronics; it was the debut of his Endangered Species label that marked this change, under the Restraint moniker. A such, last year saw the release of a mixtape on the excellent Ascetic House imprint, two solid houses of muddy cassette noise and pseudo techno that have been reissued by Shifted's equally sublime Avian label. He appears under the moniker Grace, and the two sides have been stripped-out into four cuts, the first two being an abstract pool of venomous sonics, followed by the more concrete rhythms of "Track 3" and "Track 4". Strangely, the more Vereker deviates from structured techno, the more we realise that he's one of the only artists out there making real industrial music in this day and age.

Review: Rabit's Halcyon Veil welcome an all-star international troupe from the very fringes of electronica, bass, beats and techno. Nigga Fox, Hvad, Bekele Berhanu, Zutzut and Draveng all plough deep into their blends to paint pictures we've never heard before, from the stuttering jazz drums of Draveng's "Internal" to Hvad's rampant slimy steppy techno "Bleeding Grey Wall". They're also joined by a mysterious unknown artist for the final warped trip; the untitled "Track 6". Who knows where the Rabit hole will take us this time?

Review: Antonio Marini aka Healing Force Project is back with the Tranhumanism EP on Ambiwa. Starting out with the ever mysterious "Methodical Ear", it's more of the same later on "Sinapsi Sonora" which like the previously mentioned track sounds like the dusty and emotive deepness of early Sound Signature via the tough and rusty swing of fellow Italians Relative; a nice touch indeed. He then gives us the brooding and hypnotic "Shadow Manipulation Of The Mind" awash in delay drenched organs and skeletal vintage drum machine flair. But the fierce yet restrained functionalism of "State Of Induced Hibernation" with its near tribal moments supported by a series of exotic and mindbending drones is pure bliss. We'll say it again: Marini is undoubtedly one of the most underrated producers in techno at the moment!
