  4. Graveyard Shift (3:51)
Review: Having recently devoted more of his time to the breezy, melodious bliss of the D.K project, Dang Khoa-Chau once again dons the 45 ACP alias for a more downbeat E.P on L.I.E.S. It's arguably far more accessible than his previous work for the label under the now familiar moniker, but still pleasingly left-of-centre. There's much to admire throughout, from the poignant melodies, drifting keys and spaced-out drums of "Hang In There", and Marimba-laden deep space techno of "Smoked Out", to the clarinet-laden ambient textures of bittersweet closer "Graveyard Shift". While opener "Slick Response" - a bubbling, ear-pleasing chunk of metronomic techno - feels a little more positive, it's still largely melancholic in tone.

Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present - see the B-side's lead cut - and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.

Review: Roh!s Records is a Sardinian record label based in Berlin, founded by Andrea Porcu in late 2007. Between 2007 and 2016 the label moved to different countries such as Belgium. They offer a much needed re-issue of Tetsuya Nakamura aka Arc Of Doves' 2014 album "Never Let Me Go" which features emotive piano lines gently floating triumphantly above sharp breakbeats and providing a wonderful contrast. On the flip "Wish You Were Here" is more sombre and mellow, showcasing more of Nakamura's expressive piano skills.

Review: For their latest No 'Label' release, Rush Hour has turned to "Brussels-based Prince of modern psychedelic electronics" Bear Bones, Lay Low, a prolific producer who has been delivering intriguing, synthesizer-based curiosities on obscure labels for well over a decade. Hacia La Luz begins with the trippy, Tangerine Dream-in-space swirl of "Lightning Eyelids", before heading to the rainforest with Timothy Leary and Terrence McKenna via the hallucinatory drums and humid electronics of "Jewelled Selva Mating Rites". Psychedelic synthesizer lines, exotic melodies and starburst electronics come to the fore on the album's other three tracks, with the magic mushrooms-in-Goa trip of "Crystal Poppies" standing out.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: As well as being a resident at Moscow's Denis Simachev bar, Leonid Lipelis has been slowly making a name for himself as a producer for some time. There's a whole raft of Lipelis remixes for the nu-disco set dating back to 2006, but it feels like the Russian producer has stepped up his game of late. Inbetween some killer edits for LIES and an upcoming Public Possession 12" as TMO, Lipelis dons his Beard In Dust guise for the latest release from the mysterious Bahnsteig 23 label. If you were a fan of that aforementioned LIES release or any previous BAH 12 it's highly likely you will dig the four cuts here with Lipelis drawing for some obscure sources with eminently danceable results.

Cat: LTNC 008. Rel: 11 Jul 16

  2. Cera Persa 2 (9:30)
Review: Electronic experimentalist Andrea Belfi has always been hard-to-pin down, with his use of a dizzying array of aliases reflecting his desire to flit between different styles. Cera Persa is a rare outing under his given name, and offers two contrasting riffs on the same dystopian, end-of-days theme. The creepy A-side "Cera Persa 1" sits somewhere between apocalyptic, slack-tuned experimental jazz, horror influenced ambient, and undeniably deep and dark techno. On the flip, Belfi attempts to explore even murkier pastures, with dislocated drum hits, effects-laden electronics and ghostly melodies combining to send shivers down the spine. It's pretty out there stuff, all told, but also strangely alluring.

This new 7" inch features two raw and confronting tracks: on Side A we have the title track with its pounding and trance inducing tribal drums backing an onslaught of alien vocals, swimming in layers of noise and distortion; riveting stuff! On the flip "Our History In Bones" harks back to the chilling drone rock experiments as heard on his tremendous Suburban Hunting LP last year with his trademark nonchalant vocals in yet another brilliant display of modern post-punk interpretation.

Review: From time to time, Italian drummer Tommaso Cappellato lets loose and heads down more electronic pathways and branches out into the abstract realm of music. He is joined by Astral Travel on this new single for Le Disque's Ambiwa imprint - a Northern Italian music store and distributor - and "World Traveller" is more of a lo-fi, acid jazz sort of song than anything techno or house-related. The real magic comes on the flipside, however, where master technician Donato Dozzy totally deconstruct the song with his cinematic reinterpretation that goes way beyond both the original or his usual flex of stripped-back four-to-the-floor. Although subtle and perhaps less tangible than other Dozzy productions, it is a fantastic piece of work nonetheless.

Review: Any new 12" from Gerard Hanson is worthy of note, but there's something extra-exciting about this one. Fantastically, it sees him don the familiar Convextion alias - first used way by in 1995 - for the first time since 2007 for the latest 12" on Dynamo Dreesen's ever excellent Acido label. Boasting two long, slowly unfurling concoctions, Acido 22 is up there with his greatest work (and that's saying something). Thrillingly, it eschews the deep, spacey electro sound with which he made his name, instead turning to beat-less ambience; kind of Convextion does Pete Namlook, if you will. Both tracks are suitably sublime, with stretched-out chords, classical-style melodic movements, and memorable tunes that develop organically over the course of 11 or 12 minutes. Making great ambient music is hard, but Hanson knows exactly what he's doing.

Review: The master of minimal noise returns! Following up the excellent Forse series on Important Records and last year's tremendous Risveglio on Hospital Productions, Alessandro Cortini returns with Spie LP on Make Noise, which follows up some great releases by the likes Keith Fullerton Whitman and Richard Devine. After all; they did all create their compositions on the same Make Noise Shared System modular synthesizer didn't they! Described by Cortini as "a gorgeous sunrise over a decimated landscape" these two long form drone journeys are just as hypnotic and all-consuming as his previous efforts but have much more of an edge and sense of aggressiveness as opposed to his MC-202 experiments on previous efforts. Fans will not be disappointed.

He first came to our attention with the Transcendental Numbers ep on Jamal Moss' Mathematics label in 2012 and we've waited on each release ever since, including last year's huge Future Shock Disco ep (a collaboration with Jamal himself). Here DeViere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for UMHS to hit double figures.

  5. Prostitutes - "Cuyahoga Frankenstein"
Review: The Contort Yourself tradition of electronics pioneers, modern masters and new names continues into CY003. Enrique comes under that latter banner. The Hot Releases alumnus introduces the EP with the piston pounded belligerence of Dissociate. L.I.E.S. and Nation veteran Beau Wanzer continues this stroll into aggression. Weasels is an upturned work of techno. Nuts, bolts and the grisly inner workings are on show for this fast paced floor mangler. Spain's industrial stalwarts Esplendor Geometrico open the flip. From 1988 the grit of the factory floor is carried into Rotor. A touch of the mystical is injected, chants looped through the hypnotic rhythms in this simmering classic. Broken English Club is on hand to rework Rotor into a guttering piece of Electro tainted machine music. If you're hoping for some respite, think again. Prostitutes (Diagonal) closes with the cruel pummelling percussion of Cuyahoga Frankenstein. A brutal, beefy and brilliant 12.

Review: Guitarist-turned-electronic experimentalist Matthew Mullane (AKA Fabric) first rose to prominence back in 2011, with an impressively odd but entertaining full-length on Spectrum Spools. In recent times, Mullane has been contributing occasional tracks to Meandyou's numerous split EPs. Here, he gets a 12" of his own, and uses the opportunity to effortlessly blend elements of IDM, deep house, techno, and abstract electronica. After beginning with the yearning electronic melancholia of "Sep L", he dips his toe into organic/electronic fusion with the hypnotic techno throb of "Curiosity Model". His love of ear-pleasing intelligent techno positivity comes to the fore on "Against Sen", before the bass-heavy "Blurred On Glass", and trippy "Geo Mode" complete a fine EP.

  5. Die Form - "Fear Of The Bloody Night" (IBM Industrial Strength Dub)
Review: After a strong first release Contort Yourself returns with "Events at the Fatal Party" which comes over more as a description than a title, brimming with a bubbling sense of tension and fear. Hamburg duo Fallbeil kick things off in impressive style with a crunchy acid monster which twists and turns followed by two killer proto-techno cuts from legendary French industrial band Die Form from their 1985 tape Hurt. Here we find ourselves in a unsettling scenario with metallic voices scowling over clanging machines and guitar feedback in an unhinged way. The mysterious Slugbug (L.I.E.S./Russian Torrent Versions) starts the flip with "GOBACK", a creeping acidic beast moving unstoppably forward as a reverberating voice ripples throughout. Any calm is then shattered by IBM a.k.a. Jamal Moss whose remix of Die Form hammers home a tough seven minutes of mangled synths, bubbling acid and thundering drums. A highly recommended, intense journey.

Review: John Frusciante of Red Hot Chilli Peppers forays into techno music once again courtesy of Los Angeles 303 purists Acid Test. The results are definitely interesting, take opener "Foregrow", an early '90s IDM sounding jam reminiscent of early Aphex Twin complete with Frusciante's emotive crooning over the top. The disjointed and confusing beat programming of "Expre'act" features sombre and emotive elements in the background complemented by.. a guitar solo? Interesting! On the flip "Lowth Forgue " gives that little silver box a workout (finally) good and well on this wicked smack electro number while "UNF" ends the EP on a positive note on this freeform retro electronics journey.

Review: New experimental clique Gluvs debut with a stunning piece of noisy drone for the neonate Random Sevens imprint - and just like that, we have our leftfield EP of the week. The young, mysterious outfit have put together a wonderfully crestfallen pool of instruments and electronic distortion in "Sunday Breakfast", a totally surreal piece of music that could easily be enjoyed by any record aficionado. The same goes for the more glacial tones of "New Year", and the playful peaks and troths on "Poka", because what Gluvs do best is transform a genre that is largely appreciated by music nerds into something more concrete, less demanding on the ears and utterly sublime to zone out to. TIP!

Review: Earlier this year, Red Light Radio founder Orpheu de Jong stumbled across a cassette, originally self-released in 1984, from an unknown San Francisco musician called Joel Graham. On the strength of the two tracks showcased here, it would be fair to say that Graham was ahead of his time. Hypnotic and minimalist in the extreme, the drum machine and synthesizer workout "Geomancy" - apparently recorded in 1982 on pre-midi analogue equipment - sounds like a template for techno. B-side "Night" is similarly inspired, and bears an uncanny resemblance to pitched-down versions of some of the dreamy new age house and nu-Balearica currently doing the rounds. It's superb, and almost as good as the brilliant A-side. Another superb release from the guys at Music From Memory.

Review: Talk about a transformation; former Minus mainstay and minimal stalwart Marc Houle goes from ping-pong beats and hiccuping rhythms to this deep, 80s-referencing house release. " Don't Want To Watch You Read" is a mesmerising affair, centred on a booming bass and featuring a mysterious vocal that is similar to the one that featured on Brian Kage's record on FXHE earlier this year. There is a reference to Houle's minimal past on the rushing sirens of the Golden Filter remix of "Read", but in the main this is a radical departure. The title track is a pulsing electronic disco affair, while the Red Axes remix of "Read" is an epic, EBM-fueled reshape.

Review: According to Beating Heart, Hugh Tracey made several thousand field recordings across Sub-Saharan Africa between the 1920s and 1970s. His intention was to 'reveal the beauty and complexity of the music to a world that saw little value in it.' Fast forward to the present day, Tracey's bid to preserve the music of Africa for future generations lives on. Beating Heart has shared the late Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. London's Throwing Shade, fresh of a great release for Ninja Tune turns in the vivid and polyrhythmic 'Dream Scene", Hotflush's Machinedrum gives us the intense polyrhythmic Sub Saharan trance induction of "Lewasi" while Ibibio Sound Machine gives us the soul-funk boogie of "Amai Ndiwulule".

Review: It was only last year that Isorinne appeared on the scene, and already he's released two albums for MIXED-UP, and a string of EPs for various labels including the excellent Field Records. What a storming debut. This time he's on Yerevan with a pensive collection of ambient abstractions, with "Each Onto Each" opening the EP with a moody fall of melodies bound together by a liquid-like presence; a placid pool of sounds that evaporates into thin air thanks to the hollowness of "Closing Window To The East". "Gate Of Sleep" is the most beautiful of the ballads on here, a withering gust of harmonics setting off in the wind, while "Shrine Of Vice" breaks the mood and deconstructs into a glitchy, noisy pulse of fuzz and static. Excellent.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: So Bahnsteig is arrived! Paenz?r style from the flanken. Next is Eastern bruder, Romania youth, Khidja. Vibrations with wunderbar music on [Emotional] Especial and Forgotten Corners, they give us Balearic, Neu Wave and Kraut explosionens. 4 edits is a taste of their opening. Infinita will make you bop in aisles. Stehen nur noch. Twist, schrie. Then geist, is Droll's House. Britisch indie for dunkel fun. Schleife de schleife. Utsici is the jam. Go. Woop. Verschossen for finale. The heimkehr. Can you tanz? Was Auch Immer.
