Bass
  1. Acre - "No Signal" (3:57)
  2. Fis - "Branch Light" (3:15)
Gespielt von: Juno Recommends Bass
Review: Mumdance recently said he approached Fabric himself with the idea of doing a mix for their iconic long-running fabric live series and it's a good thing he did as his Fabriclive 80 was an eye-popping journey through experimental electronics, weightless club music and old hardcore favourites. The producer also managed to secure a ton of exclusives for the mix, two of which feature on this second and final 10" sampler. Up first is Mancunian bass heavyweight Acre whose " No Signal" sounds all the more hefty removed from its original context in Fabriclive 80, whilst New Zealand sonic explorer Fis is at his degraded best on the speaker shattering "Branch Light".

Review: Having previously impressed with a pair of mix CDs on their No. 19 Music imprint, Art Department has finally received the call from Fabric. Opening and closing with the same Basic Channel classic - "Mutism" - the now solo Canadian act offers a whirlwind tour of inspirations and musical obsessions. So, after a deep and hypnotic start, they subtly move through the gears, firstly via the jackin' deep house-meets-tech house of Fred P's breathless "reshape" of Brooks Mosher's "Get Ready", and later via the alien pump of Ngly's "Service Cost". By the time Nitejams' Detroit-influenced Chicago jacker "Untitled (NJ01-B1)" swaggers into view, the party's in full swing.

Review: Fabric reach for the big guns once again as UK techno pioneer Baby Ford steps up to deliver no 85 in the club's long running mix series. Laid down in one take at Baby Ford's studio using a rotary mixer and a pile of wax, it offers a thrilling balance between overlooked classic material, his own productions, and slept-on contemporary fare. Beginning with his minimalist hook-up with The Ifach Collective, "Carpet", the mix smoothly builds via the bumpin' house of Derrick Carter, the tactile old school New York deep house of Pal Joey, and the heavily compressed techno bump of Alex Celler's "Haz". Happily, he finishes on a high, dropping one of his own previously unreleased productions, the excellent "NYO15".

Review: Calibre has always been one of the more thoughtful members of the drum & bass fraternity, with a passion not just for rumbling rhythms, but also pleasing musicality. It's these two sonic traits that come to the fore on FabricLive 68, his first contribution to the London super club's long running mix series. While there are plenty of sublime moments punctuated by punchy percussion, it's the more fluid, musically complex tracks that stand out (see the twinkling pianos of DRS's "Keep The Faith", Marky & SPY's carnival-tastic "Yellow Shoes (Calibre Remix)" and Zero's "Inner City Life"-ish "Refusal"). As a result, FabricLive 68 is a loose, languid journey through D&B's greener pastures.

Review: Like a reality TV star rushing a vanity biography to print, many bands take on a DJ career after making a name for themselves. Cut Copy rise high above the trend on "Fabriclive 29," a dynamic, fresh and conceptual approach to what will surely become a classic DJ mix. The 25 tracks bounce, groove, cut, pound, swell and throb together to form a compilation so infectious, every guitar-strapped indie kid will crave a pair of turntables and vice versa. This could be the soundtrack to the party no one's had the guts to throw, where Nu-wave vocals cling to punky guitar leads and swishy hi hats propel a four-on-the-floor synthetic stomp. Teasing in the scuzziness of Ciccone Youth and Grauzone, while keeping company with Goldfrapp's synthpop and a bottomed-out Justice remix (courtesy of Erol Alkan), Cut Copy engages the iconic 80s sound to dance alongside the filtered, French -Touch sounds of today. Brimming with foxy vocals, carefree and playful but never too kitsch, the mix frees sweetened space pop from any dancefloor confinements. The climbing basslines could make disco heels plod, tattooed arms flail and slicked rocker heads bang, each lost to the sounds of overdriven distortion panning from one ear to the next. The catchy mix is so bright - neon even - you'll find yourself madly in love, whether your heart lies in the disco or garage.

Review: Deetron's Fabric mix has been a long time coming; in many ways, it's a surprise that he hasn't been asked to lay down a volume before. His wide-ranging approach to techno and house - rooted in the classic sounds of Chicago in Detroit, but rich in immersive European tech-house - is perfectly suited to the mix format. Fabric 76, then, is an impressive journey, with classic tracks from Galaxy 2 Galaxy, DJ Sneak and E-Dancer rubbing shoulders with more recent fare from new school heroes such as Tom Trago, Joe, Ripperton, Seven Davis Jnr and the irrepressible Redshape. With tracks from Caribou, Atoms for Peace and Four Tet also making an appearance, there's plenty of curious turns to keep the mix fresh and exciting.

Review: When it comes to DJing there aren't many names as trusted as Marcel Dettmann to provide the essential mix, be it in CD or podcast format. To date he's curated the second installment of Ostgut's in-house Berghain mix series and the Conducted mix for Belgian label Music Man. So it's about time Fabric invited the Berghain resident to participate in their own mix series, with this 77th edition providing a selection mostly based on unreleased MDR demo tracks that Dettmann's been utilising in his sets for years. The result is a good primer for what to expect from his label in the future, with Answer Code Request, Norman Nodge, Ilian Taper Dario Zenker and French producer Marcelus amongst the high-profile names contributing unreleased productions.

Review: Given that they've now been bulldozing dancefloors with their distinctively dark, fizzing, tech-tinged take on drum & bass for nigh on 20 years, few will be surprised to hear that Ed Rush and Optical's contribution to the FabricLive series is a bombastic, full-throttle affair. Packed to the rafters with growling basslines, skittish jungle rhythms, subtle nods to rave and nightmarish textures, FabricLive 82 is little less than a lesson in D&B's murkier margins. While there are few surprises - the duo found their niche years ago and have been happily working it ever since - it's nevertheless a hugely enjoyable excursion, somehow squeezing in 39 tracks along the way.

Review: The latest installment of Fabric's long-running mix series comes from Ryan Elliot, a DJ/producer whose releases on Ostgut Ton, Spectral Sound and Bass Empire have made him a man in demand. He begins in deep, woozy and tactile fashion, mixing up hazy tech-house cuts from King Cheetah, Borrowed Identity and DJ Skull, before exploring the kind of minimal-influenced fare we've come to expect from the American. As the mix rolls on, the techno tracks get tougher and more obviously stripped-back, with occasional nods towards classic Motor City sounds. There are notable contributions from Robert Hood, DVS1, James Ruskin and Jack Murphy, as Elliot completes a whirlwind tour of contemporary techno flavours.

Review: Despite his well-earned reputation as one of techno's most prolific producers, this contribution to the long-running Fabric series is Alan Fitzpatrick's first mix CD. Happily, it finds the Drumcode regular in fine form, showcasing his wide-ranging approach to late night techno. After beginning with some clandestine ambience and dark downtempo textures, Fitzpatrick proceeds to join the dots between the throbbing peak-time thump of Mike Denhert, the swirling deepness of Bjarki, the spine-tingling rave revivalism of Markus Suckut, and the glassy-eyed Detroit nostalgia of Operator. He wisely includes a clutch of his own productions, too, including the decidedly dystopian "End Theme".

Review: The Fabriclive series maintains its fine run of form with Four Tet's eagerly anticipated inclusion into the canon. Stitching together field recordings of the club itself, ambient tracks from Michel Redolfi and David Borden, a selection of lost, dusty UK garage from the likes of Persian and Crazy Bald Heads and recent productions from Burial and Floating Points, it's not so much a DJ set as an impressionistic rendition of Hebden's own memories of clubbing itself. Considering the fact that Hebden's own productions are usually so saturated in melody, it's a relatively dark mix, dominated by murky bass tones and sharp, brittle beats, with a constantly shifting sense of urgency that encourages rapt attention throughout. The stellar mix is capped off with two brand new Four Tet tracks, "Pyramid" and "Locked", which only seek to highlight his growing ability to produce devastating club tracks.

Review: Illum Sphere steps up to represent Manchester crew Hoya:Hoya on this enlightening mix for Fabric's long running Fabriclive series. If you've not had the chance to catch Hoya:Hoya at the Farringdon club or in Manchester, this weighty 24 track selection is the perfect introduction, veering from dub to primitive electronics and Minimal Wave via spectral Lancastrian ambience and prime slabs of Midwestern Jakbeat. There's plenty of neat little touches throughout, like playing Grauzone at the wrong speed or dicing between the spiky "Fizz" from Powell and Carl Meek's dancehall banger "Danger" which lend the mix an element of personality lacking in many Ableton mixed sets these days. Major props to Illum Sphere for making space for Charles Manier, Streetwalker and Demdike Stare, and for the inclusion of the spell binding "Cast Reflections" by Vazz.

Review: Given that he took his DJ/production pseudonym from the name of a 19th century Romanian writer of folk stories, it's no surprise that Petre Insperescu's chosen form of techno is shuffling, atmospheric and classically-minded. Sitting somewhere between Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos and Nicholas Jaar, his sparse but well-rounded productions are simultaneously pleasingly calming and genuinely energetic, full of curious touches (a twinkling, distant piano here, a cut-glass string trio there) and gentle exploration. Gathered together and mixed into a seamless whole, as on this first mix for Fabric, they offer an intriguing journey that should appeal to all those who love their techno subdued and atmospheric.

Review: Given their reputation as fearless party-starters, it's perhaps unsurprising to find Jack Beats mixing the latest installment of the FabricLive series. The duo, who first made their names as part of the Scratch Perverts and Mixologists respectively, are renowned for not taking themselves too seriously, and here offer up a bombastic journey through cheeky bass music, UKG-inspired rave anthems, shimmering deep house, bouncy post-dubstep, aggressive electro and slamming retro-futurist anthems. There's little subtlety or depth, just a non-stop barrage of slamming tracks, funk-fuelled grooves and speaker-shaking basslines aimed fairly and squarely at the dancefloor.

Review: While most DJs still choose to use their Fabric mix to dig deep into their record collections, some prefer to turn it into a production showcase. That's what Mathew Jonson has done on Fabric 84, filling it entirely with tracks that he's had a hand in, be they solo productions, remixes or collaborations. That the mix is hugely entertaining and ebbs and flows in the manner of a quality club set is testament not only to Jonson's production skills, but also to his understanding of the format. For the most part, it's rooted in his trademark take on techno - a surging, funk-fuelled fusion of Detroit futurism, European minimalism, and something more wildly adventurous - but also contains nods to acid, broken beat, synth-pop, new-wave, bleep and early British hardcore.

Review: Already brandishing one timeless mix CD in his armoury with that Berghain mix, Ben Klock becomes the latest incumbent in the highly regarded Fabric mix series. No 66 in the series finds the Berghain resident taking us on an undulating journey through late night techno, casually slipping between obtuse, heads-down fare, blunt machine rhythms and shuffling, hypnotic grooves. The mix is naturally well constructed and beautifully executed, with plenty of sneaky re-edits, remixes and original productions from the man himself. Musically, there are few surprises, but that's not the point; Klock is a man you turn to for proper techno. It doesn't get much more techno than Fabric 66.

Review: Be prepared for a daring ride through the imagination of a truly unclassifiable force in British electronic music, as Mumdance delivers a veritable statement of a Fabric mix. Far from plying a safe and steady club rocking trade, the London-based producer swerves wildly about across the run time with excursions into noise and sparse avant-garde states before sliding into twitchy techno only to be waylaid by dismembered jungle breaks and bass stabs. There are swerves around every corner, and each turn goes deeper into the nether regions of Mumdance's mind before the mix barges its way to the top via a deft progression from grime to nostalgic hardcore.

Review: This is perhaps the one time you will see a chart grime smash sharing space on a 10" with Root Strata boss Jefre Cantu Ledesma and we have Mumdance and Fabric to thank for this! The former of course included both tracks featured here on his excellent Fabriclive mix for the London clubbing institution earlier this year and the chance to own them on vinyl should not be passed up. Mumdance's VIP fabriclive version of his Novelist hookup "1 Sec" brilliantly turns the track weightless whilst Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's "Untitled" sounds all the more mind boggling in isolation from the mix.

Review: Given the current political climate in the UK, it seems fitting that Romanian minimal house DJ has chosen to open his contribution to Fabric's long-running mix series with Renato Figoli's "Super Lemon Vapor", a track that smartly satirises the attitude of some small-minded Brits to immigration. From here, Raresh runs through some 16 cuts of woozy, tripped out minimal house, peppering productions by his compatriots with the occasional nod across the Atlantic (both Amir Alexander and Hakim Murphy cuts are excellent). If you've seen Raresh play at the Farringdon disco on one of his bi-annual bookings, you know the man has mixing skills and they are most certainly on display here.

Review: Over the last decade, Romanian DJ/producer Rhadoo has done more than most to put the country's minimal techno scene on the map. It's perhaps fitting, then, that he's used the opportunity provided by this first Fabric mix to showcase previously unheard tracks from some of the country's top techno talents. It's a similar tactic to that employed by his good friend Inspirescu on his Fabric mix earlier this year. Just as it did then, it works now, with the complimentary tracks helping to build a cohesive vibe. What's most impressive is the fluidity; from the eyes-closed late night shuffle of Tulbure's "Stalker", to the restless hypnotism of Faster's "Protocol" and the trippy bump of Barac Nicolae's "Frou Frou", Fabric 72 is a coherent journey to the heart of the Eastern European minimal scene.

Review: Amazingly, it's ten years since Fabric resident Craig Richards' last solo mix CD for the legendary London venue's mix series, and nearly seven since his acclaimed Fabric Tyrant mix with Lee Burridge. This release, then, should be a cause for celebration - not least because Richards' rarely fails to deliver. Over the course of 70 spellbinding minutes, Richards seamlessly moves through the full gamete of tech-house and techno emotions. On the way, he touches on everything from the classic electronica of Two Lone Swordsmen (the still-brilliant "Rico's Helly") and hypno-house of Johnny Fiasco to the Detroitian wizardry of Conforce, space disco of Maurice Fulton and soaring blissfulness of Neville Watson. An essential lesson in the melodic potential of electronic music.

Review: Five years on from his last mix CD - the solid, two-disc Made For The Night on Defected - Jesse Rose has been given a chance to put together the latest installment in the long running FabricLive series. While the overriding mood is deep, soulful and bumpin', he includes a dash of the rolling, fidget-influenced sounds he was once famous for (see the Induceve track), plus nods towards woozy, late night acid house/disc fusions (Shit Robot), string-laden tech-house (Staygold remixing Mathias Kaden), and the kind of heavyweight grooves that were once the preserve of Derrick Carter (a killer blend of Sean Miller's "Malaba" and 3rd Face's Brazilian house smasher "Canto Della Liberta").

Review: To be honest, it's about time that Logan Sama had the space to compile his own series of mythical London club Fabric's, Fabriclive series. The grime DJ started his career back on the equally important Rinse FM back in 2002, and has been an important part of the club's development over the years that saw grime and dubstep blow up. At number 83 in the series, Sama drops a selection of tunes that are wholly representative of his DJ sets in Fabric's Room 1; the mix contains tunes by everyone from grime pioneer Wiley, to vocalist and producer JME, and a whole load of lesser known names that have kept the grime scene evolving. This is the real deal, there ain't not other like it around these days. Recommended.

Review: Despite the nebulous Sandwell District label ceasing operations at the end of 2011, the name has lived on as a performance based entity with Female and Silent Servant leaving it to be fronted by Karl 'Regis' O'Connor and Sumner. Thus the latter two step forth to man the figurative decks for this stunning induction into the Fabric mix series. Productions from the pair feature heavily, with several tracks from Function's recent Incubation brushing up alongside several of Regis' recent remixes for Blackest Ever Black and VCMG, while Sandwell alumni Silent Servant and Rrose also feature in the form of "A Path Eternal" and "Wedge" respectively. There are also a few surprises in the form of Untold's "Motion The Dance" and Factory Floor's "16-2-16-9-20-1-14-9-7?, which are joined by experimental fare from Boyd Rice and Samuel Kerridge. A must for fans of Sandwell District.

Review: Given his meteoric rise over the last two years, it's perhaps no surprise to find New York-based techno star Levon Vincent behind the decks on this latest Fabric mix. His mixing and production style - dubby, fluid and loose, but prone to periods of paranoid darkness and intense moments of sun-bright clarity - is tailor-made for an album like this. As a result, Fabric 63 is a memorable journey that touches on all of these traits, from the spine tingling, dubwise deepness of his own "The End" and apocalyptic "Early Reflections", to the elastic, melody-driven rubberyness of Joey Anderson, reflective groovery of Jus-Ed and growling menace of Anthony Parasole.

Review: Nobody could accuse Joris Voorn of lazily knocking out a big standard DJ mix on his first contribution to Fabric's long-running series. The long-established Dutch producer has used the opportunity to showcase his studio skills, combining elements from no less than 65 different tracks to create a unique musical journey that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between a DJ mix, album, and remix set. Musically, it's pretty much what you'd expect - deeper, woozier cuts morphing into tougher, harder fare as the set progresses - but it flows wonderfully well. Due to the nature of its' construction, even familiar tracks from the likes of Robert Hood, Plastikman, Deepchord and Voorn himself become vibrant new pieces, as he brilliantly melds them with up to four other cuts at the same time. It works as a mix, but as a showcase for Ableton Live's potential it's out of this world.
