  4. Wara Coco (5:00)
Review: Last spotted on Vakant, Detroit's man of mystery returns to D'Julz' Bass Culture after four years with three more rough, warm Motor City jams. "Castaway" takes off without so much as a compass. Heading towards the light with every added rhythmic element and cascading arpeggio, it drives into the horizon with equal measure of focus and looseness. "Doin It To Ya Baby" takes a subaquatic disco approach - the wide beats are wrapped in subtle slapbass twangs and dubby overlays while "Wara Coco" is a trippier twist into the shadows as raindrop textures trickle over a low and slow groove and incessant humanised loops. Remix-wise Orlando Voorn peppers the lead track with a little analogue funk and mild acid tweaking. After this castaway you'll never want to come home...

Don't Let Love Pass You By

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Don't Let Love Pass You By (D Julz edit) (6:15)
  2. Don't Let Love Pass You By (Get Down mix) (6:30)
Review: Want proof of D'Julz's status as one of the eminent diggers in house music? This little known Chicago house cut from the Trax discography has been a long-term favourite of the Bass Culture boss and he's only gone and done a rather well-executed edit so the rest of us can enjoy it too. It's presented here along with one of the original mixes, namely the "Get Down mix". This is the classic sound of the Windy City underground in the late eighties; and what a zeitgeist that was! With Liz Torres' jacking vocals, epic Juno strings and thumping swing fuelled beats, this one ticks all the right boxes.

50/50 EP (12")
Cat: BCR 050T. Rel: 16 May 16
Techno
  1. Transient (9:07)
  2. Crumple Zone (6:58)
Review: UK house king Mr G is always a pleasure to hear and write about. That's because his own personal variety of house music is just so damn lively, upbeat and, well.. fun. He is back on Bass Culture after a lengthy hiatus from the French label, but "Transient" is a masterful return to the imprint thanks to a deep, grainy rhythm with a glorious cascade of percussion. "Crumple Zone" on the flip is darker and less welcoming than its predecessor, but the old-school b-boy still manages to get that trademark Mr G vibe into the arrangement. Solid house music, as per usual.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Brock Wild (6:50)
  2. Aftershock (6:48)
  3. Foliage Patterns (6:27)
Review: Following recent outings on Robsoul and Scenario, Sebo K delivers his first EP for D'Julz's Bass Culture imprint. It's a strong set of rock solid club tracks, with opener "Brock Wild" doing a great job of fusing the producer's usual crunchy tech-house style with the heavy bass and sonic aesthetics of dub. "Aftershock" sees him successfully explore tactile, melodious, spacey deep house territory - check the jaunty bassline, string-laden chords and bumping, Chez Damier style beats - while the super-smooth "Foliage Patterns" successfully joins the dots between slick, analogue-rich deep house and crispier tech-house flavours.
