The Fuzz (4:09)
I Can't Help Myself (3:03)
Love (4:26)
Review: Dynamite Cuts back up their name once more with another red hot 7" of pure dancefloor gold. This one brings tufter four cuts from the inimitable Roy Ayers Ubiquity. The opener 'Hummin' In The Sun' will have you feeling the rays on your face as his signature percussion and vibes work brings a soulful groove alive. 'The Fuzz' is a more tender and intimate soul sound for late-night romancers and 'I Can't Help Myself' pics up the pace again with some funky drums and warm melodies while 'Love' has a conversational style and smooth groove.

Sweet Power Your Embrace (4:07)
Review: Prolific Japanese jazzers Nautilus - made up of drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi, and bassist Shigeki Umezawa - present their latest 7" release 'A Story About You'. It's an emotive A-and-B-sider of mournful mood, with the A-side cemented by rolling pianos and a central lyric-melody performed by Mariko's talkbox, and B-sider 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' coming as a cover of the 1977 classic by James Mason. Signaling news of a full-length album to come - you'd better fasten your seatbelts.

Time & Space (4:06)
Review: Dynamite Cuts has got a couple of Roy Ayers Ubiquity projects in the fire this month - a brilliant 7" double pack as well as this 45rpm. Both sides of this one rather take quite different paths to your affections. 'A Tear To A Smile' is high-speed and complex funk for the dance floor with loopy rhythms and Roy's mad vibes playing over the top next to some neat bass work. Flip it over and you'll find the much more deep and laid-back 'Time & Space' with its lavish cosmic keys and jazz vocals all working you into a star-gazing lather.

A Town Called Earth (part 1) (4:25)
A Town Called Earth (part 2) (4:22)
Review: Limited edition 7" comes in just 500 copies and features the American soul-jazz band from San Diego, California, known as The Greyboy Allstars. Memners Karl Denson, Elgin Park, Aaron Redfield, Chris Stillwell and Robert Walter have released six albums to date and originally formed as a backing band for rare groove star DJ Greyboy. Here though is the title track of their 'A Town Called Earth' long player from 1997 and it is one that is sure to appeal to jazz and funk heads who enjoy Pharaoh Sanders and Thembi. The band played seven live-streams during the pandemic and proved they still very much have it.

Tema Cinque (4:33)
Review: Lorenzo Morresi and Tenderlonious are back to build on the success of their first collaboration, last year's 'Cosmica Italiana.' This new single comes ahead of a forthcoming debut album later in the year and features a couple of gorgeous tunes. 'Acqua' is a joyous tune with a steady 6/8 groove that is loaded with flutes, sax lines and arpeggiated synthesizers. On the flipside is 'Tema Cinque' which comes as an electro ballad, powered by hypnotic drums and sweeping pads with lush and moody sopranos. On this evidence, the upcoming album is going to be an utterly perfect musical escapism.

Waiting For The Storm (3:58)
Review: It is always a highly anticipated event when Ikebe Shakedown drop new music and that is the case here once more. First up they tackle a legendary Ennio Morricone track as the A-side. Their take on 'Adonai' retains all the Western soundtrack charm of the original but with added horns, plenty of filthy but funky guitar riffs and a driving rhythm section sure to make its mark on the club. 'Waiting For The Storm' is a brand new cut that slows things down on the flip with jumbled drums and loose claps making for a more sensuous sound.

Ponteio (3:13)
Review: Amongst fans of Brazilian music, Sivuca is arguably best known for his 1973 cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" - later a favourite on the rare groove scene - which re-casts the Bill Withers classic as a sumptuous chunk of shuffling samba sunshine. Here, the track gets reissued as part of Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series, alongside his lesser-known - but no less impressive - cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio".

Organised Drum Sax (3:03)
Review: If Original Gravity serves as one of the foremost outposts for heavy funk jams in the modern era, you know their All-Starts outfit are equipped with the tools to make a record really pop. All the ingredients are there on ‘Ain’t Nothing But A Groovy Party Baby’, as overdriven organ duels with a formidable brass section and rolling drums for a peak-time party pleaser cut from a classic cloth, with an early 70s soul sound to match. On the flip, ‘Organised Drum Sax’ locks into a deeper groove from the JBs school of funk - pure feel good licks and sassy brass to help you get your strut on.

Review: Reposado aka Tequila Funk brings more Latin and Afro flavours magic to this new 7". It makes a perfectly international soundtrack for global dancefloor fun with A-side 'All You Got To Do' bringing an uptempo soul vibe with some legendary guitar from the one and only Jimmy James, while some soulful background cooing comes from Alex Rose. It's a feelgood gem that will unite all who hear it and then the reverse is a salsa-tinged delight. 'Original' has masterful piano from Marina Albero and is an irresistible gem that completes a fine two-tracker.

Sevenates (4:08)
Review: Formed in 2017, the Sokratis Votskos Quartet is fast becoming one of the leading lights in Greek jazz. Later in the year they'll be releasing a brand new album on Jazzman, from which this tasty double A-side is taken. "Almopian Etude" is a veritable humid summer breeze of a track: a loose and languid fusion of spiritual piano motifs, languid double bass, bustling drums and alternately snaking and intoxicating horn solos. B-side "Sevenates" is an altogether funkier proposition, with cyclical saxophone motifs increasing in intensity over a jumpy, piano-driven rhythm track. It's not exactly jazz-funk, but it's certainly travelling in that direction. Either way, it's ace.

Right Now (2:57)
Review: Salena Jones has been active since the 60s, recording over 40 albums of jazz, soul and easygoing pop in that time. Her rendition of 'Am I The Same Girl' - the soul standard written by industry songwriting string-pullers Eugene Record and Sonny Sanders - lies among the greats of its reinterpreters. While Barbara Acklin's version is most famous, Salena Jones' version is much warmer, and its mention of the instrumental's name, 'Soulful Strut', to the main title should be indication enough from the off that Jones' version carries a far greater buoyancy.

Saudade (1:26)
Macumba (2:20)
Review: One of several products of the relationship between Piero Umiliani and film director Luigi Scattini, Angeli Bianchi... Angeli Neli - also known as Witchcraft 70 - exemplifies what was so good about the partnership between filmmaker and film scorer. A mondo movie, which were a specific sub genre of exploitation flicks and documentaries, often made to look like works of non-fiction, while this isn't Cannibal Holocaust, one of the most notorious in the canon, it certainly paints a questionable picture of Brazil's rural communities. Supposedly heading out into small town South America to observe witchcraft, black magic and ritual practices, the soundtrack itself does its best to try and evoke the spirits presented on screen, even when heard separate to the visual narrative. Here in abridged form (the full soundtrack is also available), the two tracks are influenced by Bossa nova and samba, but with so much wilder happening.'Saudade' opens on spectacular vocal-led stuff, before 'Macumba' places voice as secondary to complex and hypnotic drum patterns.

Review: Another weighty slab of Ethiopian music history from Mr Bongo... First up is the hugely influential fusionist Mulatu Astatke with the Latin-meets-Afro jam "Assiyo Bellema". Loaded with frenetic guitars and mesmerising drum work from Frank Holder, this was actually recorded during Mulatu's time in London. Flip for an equally influential force in Ethiopian music: Soul Ekos Band affiliate Teshome Meteku with a more traditional local sound, Teshome's yearning insistent vocals wrap around the horns and tight drums like fog around a mountain. Captivating.

Review: Artless Cuckoo has coaxed a second release out of Ghia here and it's another stunning following the highlight collectable and sold out first offering. This one delves into Ghia's past and presents a super limited 7" with two unreleased recordings from 1985: At The Hilton. The group was made up of Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon and they later joined with singer Lisa Ohm and these tunes are taken from an old archive of tapes. They are brilliantly delicate and unassuming, with lo-fi drum machines, wispy chords and deep celestial pads all taking you on a gentle cosmic jazz trip.

Review: Hector Rivera was a Puerto Rican singer and pianist best known for his boogaloo and Latin soul style. 'At The Party', the latest contribution by the Rivera estate to the 7" series Demon Singles Club, hears two cuts that debuted all the way back in 1966; two choice cuts from his contemporaneous album, At The Party With Hector Rivera. On 'At The Party' and 'Do It To Me', Rivera's charisma is evident, coming backed by a screw-tight band, with Bobby Valentin on bass and Louie Ramirez on vibes. Review: Barry Stroller made up an enduring part of the De Wolfe Music library catalogue, the legacy of whom Dynamite Cuts are hoping to preserve on their latest reissues series. Stroller's choice tracks 'Funky Spider' and 'Cool Character' are shining examples of the boogified infection endemic to both the artist and label; both are taken from Stroller's original Atomic Butterfly LP. Divagacao 6/8 (7:31)
Review: While best known for their funk and soul reissues, Dynamite Cuts do frequently dig deeper and look further afield for musical inspiration. They're at it again here, offering up a lavishly packaged "45" featuring two killer cuts from Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Hector Costita's jazz-funk/jazz-fusion album 1981 (which, you guessed it, was first released in 1981). A-side 'Avessos' is warming, gentle and groovy, with Costita's jaunty sax motifs rising above a samba-jazz beat, restless triangle percussion and some seriously toasty electric piano lines. 'Divagacao' is a more up-tempo nd rhythmically interesting affair that reminded us of Azymuth while also boasting some genuinely dazzling sax solos.

Now the magical Latin sounds are available for all once more as P-Vine serves up a special edition 7" with 'Babalondia' and 'And We'll Make Love' making this a must-cop. They are taken from a debut album that is as good as it gets and originally came on the famed tax scam label TSG. Rehab (4:03)
Review: It's a while since she left us but Amy Winehouse remains a towering presence in the jazz and soul world. Her voice cut through the ages and the emotion she put into her music will always be revenant. That's likely why Club 2022 has pressed up two of her standout singles to 7" for the first time. There is the breakout 'Back to Black' on one side and the sing-along classic 'Rehab' on the other, both of which are uplifting tunes with dark personal messages which spoke of the trial and tribulations of the much loved but trouble artist's short but accomplished life.

Review: The latest release on ever-crucial French jazz outpost Heavenly Sweetness welcomes the work of Bardainne Jaumet, a collaboration between accomplished French saxophonist Laurent Bardainne and Versatile regular Etienne Jaumet for four musically rich excursions into cosmic disco, Library music and the golden age of European synthesiser exploration. This is perhaps not what you might expect from the pairing of these two artists, or indeed the label, but the sheer compositional power and production of these two is simply undeniable. Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Review: American jazz drummer and singer Grady Tate was a busy man back in the day - he released some 38 odd albums from the mid-60s onwards and many big tunes. 'Be Black Baby' is a proud celebration of his race at a time when it was no doubt hugely risky to do so - right in the midst of the civil rights movement's peak days. The jazz organ player worked with the likes of Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers as well as Eva Cassidy at points in his career, and his debut solo album from which this is taken is impossible to find these days. Review: 'Beads, Things And Flowers' originally dropped in 1993 as part of the newfangled acid jazz continuum at the time. Recalling the dub-rap stylings of trip-hoppers like Massive Attack and the sampledelic confluence of jazz and electronica, this track certainly presents an interesting fusion. Newly reissued on 7", the dark power of the tracks' vocal line is fleshed out by its contrast to the B-side, which for all intents could have originated from a completely different context, and we wouldn't have batted an eye. An unusual cut spanning two starkly different emotions.

Review: This marks a first 7" from bassist and composer Shay Hazan playing alongside his quintet in their native Tel Aviv, Israel. The a-side is a dedication to a giant of the Israeli jazz scene and a sometime mentor of Hazan, saxophonist Albert Beger, with uptempo chord work and swirling drums that make you want to spin around like you just don't care. After that bit of joyous but sophisticated jazz comes 'Old Tart', a more slow burning tune that builds through big horns, spare but dramatic chords and tumbling percussion until you are in raptures. This is likely the start of big things for this crew.

This new various artists' effort proves the point well: Marcello Cassanelli lunches the trip with groovy and nodding bass synths and airy vocal cries on 'Fantasia.' Zarenzeit then sinks into a bubbly groove with killer drums and sun-worshiping synths before Stefano De Santis drops some excellent broken beast on his squelchy synth workout 'Song For George D.' They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. Review: Spanish reissue label Rocafort present this wonderful slice of highlife from Konkolo Orchestra, this time on nice blue wax as well as a plain black version. It's not exactly clear where, or indeed when, exactly the band came from, but their sound is all you need to worry about. 'Blue G' is a lilting, shuffling message of love and support for future generations, and from the message to the effervescent musicality, it's a no-brainer. On the flip, 'That Good Thing' is an instrumental that spirals outwards on the sweetest keys, joyous brass and dreamy guitar, driven by a pattering drum section to radiate good vibes wherever it's played.

Blue To Red (Photay remix) (6:13)
Blue To Red (Photay No Drums mix) (2:56)
The Cosmos (Chip dub) (4:26)
Interstellar (Medlar remix) (5:12)
Review: Chip Wickham's cosmic spiritual jazz album Blue to Red gets some key remixes here on the Spanish label Lovemonk. 'Blue To Red Photay' (remix) is a bustling, club ready tune with a majestic flute lead and pumping drums. The no drums mix is a perfectly swirling ambient piece that is richly layered and joyous. Then comes 'The Cosmos Chip' (dub) which suspends you amongst the stars, lush flutes and deep bass notes while your mind wanders free. Last of all, 'Blue To Red Medlar' (remix) is another warm and succulent house groove with jazz stylings and airy harps all brings lightness and hope.

Brownout (2:09)
Boneyard Baile (2:41)
Review: Seth Applebaum's NTC outfit Ghost Walk Orchestra originally released 'Brownout' on the Night Walker tape in 2016, distilling their hazy, psych-leaning funk sound into a perfect two-minute groove that shows off the band at their best. Now Karma Chief have pulled the track out of cassette obscurity and given it a pressing as a 7", backed up by 'Boneyard Baile' released the same year as a digi-only drop. If you love a moody funk jam played with finesse by a crack team, this record is a must.

Rully Djohan - "Bubuj Bulan" (3:00)
Munif - "Naghm El Uns" (2:30)
Review: Soundway presents a 7" featuring two rare tracks from Java, Indonesia, recorded in the late 60s. On one side, Rully Djohan delivers a psychedelic organ version of 'Bubuj Bulan', a classic Indonesian song by Benny Corda. On the other side, Munif sings a raw funk tune in Arabic called 'Naghm El Uns'. It amounts to nothing less than a fascinating glimpse into the diverse musical scene of Java at the time.
