Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

  2. Teshome Meteku - "Hasabe" (3:55)
Review: Another weighty slab of Ethiopian music history from Mr Bongo... First up is the hugely influential fusionist Mulatu Astatke with the Latin-meets-Afro jam "Assiyo Bellema". Loaded with frenetic guitars and mesmerising drum work from Frank Holder, this was actually recorded during Mulatu's time in London. Flip for an equally influential force in Ethiopian music: Soul Ekos Band affiliate Teshome Meteku with a more traditional local sound, Teshome's yearning insistent vocals wrap around the horns and tight drums like fog around a mountain. Captivating.

Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

  1. Magic Ritual (GB remix)
  2. Magic Ritual (original)
Review: Luv N'Haight's Edits series hits pay dirt here with the supreme pairing of Harry Whitaker's Black Renaissance project and Los Angeles producer par excellence Gifted & Blessed. The focus here is the Black Renaissance classic "Magic Ritual" which is present and correct on the B Side and if you don't know this highlight from the Body, Mind & Spirit LP then you need to get involved because it's a superb exercise in New York jazz, especially when that sax hits! Still though, the main draw is the remix from Eglo and Wild Oats artist GB and it's a killer reworking, implementing shards of the rattling, jazz percussion into a thick set beast that funks from start to end.

  1. Roll Your Own (5:39)
  2. Pearl (Among The Swine) (6:03)
Review: In Tramp we trust! Germany's foremost funk archivalists are on a veritable roll right now and swiftly follow that double drop of Peach Chant compilations with this kicker 7" from the Bobby Hamilton Quintet. The quintet's rare 1972 LP, Dream Queen, is the focus here as Tramp exhume two prime jazz funk cuts for their debut appearance on their preferred 7" format. Ever a label to keep DJs on their toes, both cuts on this 45 actually play at 33rpm, a method employed by Tramp to ensure both 5 minute tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible! There's an altogether dreamy quality to the lead trumpet on "Roll Your Own" (has this been sampled?) whilst "Pearl (Among The Swine)" will please the jazz dancers no end.

  1. Joao Bosco - "O Ronco Da Cuica"
  2. Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca - "Transamonica"
Review: Mr Bongos hit paydirt once again with their Brazil 45s series, with this 11th seven featuring a pair of Latin gems from Joao Bosco and Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca that have never been pressed on 7" before. In original form, "O Ronco Da Cuica" was a certified highlight of the prolific Bosco's 1976 LP Galos de Briga, the supple bossanova groove truly blessed by some excellent vocal harmonies when the chorus hits. Those sample freaks in search of a killer break will however gravitate to the B Side jazz fusion bomb "Transamonica" from Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca as it's packed full of them!

Review: More Brazilian brilliance from the Mr Bongo crew! Never released on 45 before, both tracks tell contrasting sides of Rio's rich story... "Imprevisto" is a dynamic piece of timeless jazz with splashing cymbals and scattershot pianos that gradually build into a dramatic groove that's held together with a lolloping double bass. "Skim Dum Dum Dum", meanwhile, showcases the city's funkiest roots. Big horns, undulating bass and Ana's rhythmic vocals create a universal disco experience that's peppered with Latin heat.

Review: Do not adjust your browser, it's Milton Bowser: one of Germany's few true funkateers from the late '70s foundation era. Armed with just a smidgeon of compere kitsch and big band showmanship "The Ride" is a punchy sing along slice of funk drama with very crisp delivery and story telling while "The Thief" takes us on much more of an Elton John style trip with galloping pianos, detailed phrases and a climax that seems to never end. Ja wohl.

  1. Ely Camargo - "Taieiras"
  2. Trio Esperanca - "Nao Aguento Voce"
Review: Mr Bongo plunders the Brazilian vaults for more long-forgotten Latin classics. Besides the fact that she was pretty prolific (12 albums between 1960 and 1983) Mr Bongo don't know much about Ely... Her music tells us volumes, however. Minimal, jaunty and wholly vocal-focussed, there's a great sense of mischief about "Taieiras" as the band and singers develop momentum. Even less is known about Trio Esperenca besides the fact they're sisters. Solid vocal soul, backed with lush, rich harmonies and a catchy Motown finish, it's the type of track you feel you've known forever.

Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

Review: Storied Latin-jazz artist, composer, producer, and DJ Nicola Conte lays down a marker for his upcoming fifth studio album Free Souls with this delightful 7" of the same name. Brandishing two gens from the album, Conte's channelling soul jazz at it's purest on the title track, with a rhythm and blues arrangement that provides the perfect backing for Bridgette Amofah's gliding vocal delivery. On the B Side, "Shades Of Joy" is equally as memorable with Marvin Parks' soft croon enveloped in the smooth double bass and horn section. On the basis of this, the forthcoming album should be one of Conte's finest yet!

Review: A highly limited RSD 45 taken from Ford's debut album on Spen's Quantize. "Here You Are" is an unabashed throwback to classic jazz sentiments and signatures; smoky, yearning and barbed with just the right amount of heartache. Flip for a remix from a true disco legend John Morales. With an editing, extending and remixing reputation that pre-dates even reel to reel machines, his M+M touch to "The Best Of My Love" is as polished and shiny as you'd want it to be.

Here they're represented in all their full spread glory; "Muziqa Muziqa" has an almost northern soul dynamic with its speed and wily sax blasts from Seyoum while "Muziqawi Silt" is a much more measured, introspective affair. Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

The Soul Trio is his latest project, having sparked the fire last year on We Jazz. The fire now heating up with every toot, this Timmion 45" is a jazz funk inferno. Review: Schema regular Gerardo Frisina has dug deep for the A-side of this very special 7". Taking the Booker T dreaminess and Hammond flourishes of The Lola's super-rare "Soul 70", he's beefed up the percussion and added an array of richly textured dubbiness with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Colours". An original by Gerardo, it's the ideal foil to the somnambulant sonics of the title track; stomping with northern soul glee, it's a spellbinding fusion of flutes, heavy percussion and wily organ stabs. Schema seldom disappoint, and Gerardo is the reason why.

Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Here are two of many stand-out cuts from his 1963 album Watermelon Man! While most the album's focus was on his Herbie Hancock cover, it's tracks like these that really gave the album its spirit and unique character; "Yeh Yeh!" is a samba shaking horn-led cut laced with crackling percussion and party cries while "Get The Money" leans back with rhythm and blues sass and a rhythm that's as powerful as Ramon's legacy. Moneymaker shaking guaranteed.

Review: Repress of the sought after Mukatsuku Records 12 containing two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market.
