Ladonia EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MN 02 . Rel: 03 Oct 16
  1. I Played That Track Already
  2. Nimis
  3. I Played That Track Already (Rick Wade remix)
  4. Lesboa
  5. Anthem
Review: Bologna's Frank Agrario decided to take destiny into his own hands earlier this year, founding Micronation Records as an outlet for his music. The Ladonia EP - named after a disputed micro-nation in Southern Sweden - is Agrario's second missive for the imprint, and features a particularly luscious, amospheric dancefloor roller named after the state's most famous landmark, a sculpture called "Nimis". Arguably even better is "I Played That Track Already', a dusty, Detroit style deep house cut blessed with a bold cowbell line, sustained chords, and a nagging vocal hook. Rick Wade provides a deliciously deep and soulful interpretation of that track, while the softly jazzy, broken-house track "Lesboa" is also worth a listen.

  3. JANC1
  4. JANC4
Review: Utrecht's Julian Alexander made his first appearance on hometown label SlapFunk late last year, joining forces with old friend Samuel Deep on the excellent Get Slapped EP. This time he's hit out on his own, in the process serving up a trio of bumpin', bass-heavy deep house tracks. There's a real "heads down in the basement at 4am" feel to opener "JANC6", which is dominated by an undulating, bass-heavy rhythm track, and is accompanied by a looser, breezier Ferro remix. "JANC1" has a bit more bump and swing - think Derrick Carter, minus the breathless energy, and with more deep techno influences - while "Janc 4" successfully looks to vintage speed garage for inspiration.

  2. Don't Stop The Beat (6:04)
  3. Stomping Grounds 2 (5:47)
  4. The Kissing Game (5:57)
Review: It was 1993 when Chicago's DJ Skull first released these four face-melters, and we can only imagine the faces of the dancers hearing this for the first time, amid a frenzy of other, softer variations of house. Be warned: this is still a frightening prospect on the dance floor today, as it was almost 25 years ago. The Southside DJAX affiliate re-drops the never-ending tunnel of a tune that is "Stomping Grounds", followed by the more minimal, stripped-back percussion shots of "Don't Stop The Beat". On the flip, "Stomping Grounds 2" ups the tempo and chucks in a layer of hypnotics round the lower tones, while "The Kissing Game" reduces the tension and aggression of the previous tunes down to a softer, more soulful house swing guided by that dusty drum machine programming that makes it signature Skull material.

  6. La Rumba No Tiene Horario
Review: Valencia's Alex Font has released or remixed previously on the likes of Nervous, Multi Vitamins and Nite Grooves but returns on his new Acme imprint with a full length. On the Sabor LP, he joins the dots between rolling maximal house ("Visionaere"/"Los Hombres De Negro"), deep and drugged out after-hours shenanigans ("Latin Rhythms"), spacey microhouse ("A Little Spicy") and even a bit of traditional latin jazz on the quirky closer "La Rumba No Tiene Horario". Recorded and released since his return to his homeland after a three year stint in London, it's all in all a brilliant effort by a talented young producer and he's definitely still one to watch!

Review: Here's something to genuinely get excited about: a first missive from the My Love Is Underground camp for three long years. In an attempt to make up for lost time, boss Jeremy Underground has gathered together seven fresh tracks, and stretched them across two weighty slabs of wax. As usual, the featured deep house cuts tend towards the classic and U.S-inspired, variously doffing a cap to New Jersey, New York and Chicago, via ear-pleasing organ riffs (see DJ Steaw's excellent "East Orange"), soulful vocal snippets (Teflon Dons), clear boompty influences (Tristan Da Cunha's Salt 'n' Pepa-sampling "Hit On This"), and breezy disco (Ebony Cuts). Franck Roger's contribution, "For Me", is also one of his sleaziest, basement-friendly tracks to date.

  1. Bizarre Realms
  2. Escape In Time
  3. Sio
  4. Sforzando Joy
Review: HVL seems well thought of by many within the house and techno community, with labels queuing up to secure his services. Bizarre Realms marks his first appearance on Los Angeles' Hesperian Sound Division. It's an undeniably atmospheric affair, with the Georgian keen to show off his noted eye for detail. Check, for example, the spacey, Detroit deep house-goes-acid vibe of "Escape In Time", or the watery, deep space electronics and jazz-flecked rhythm of "Bizarre Realms". He's not afraid to doff a cap to techno, either, as both the deep and dubby "Sio", and the more ragged, mind-bending "Sforzando", so neatly prove.

  1. Lax (7:57)
  2. Dub III (7:02)
  3. 11th (9:17)
Review: East End Dubz offshoot Eastenderz continues to go from strength to strength after killer releases from Romanians Lizz and Nami. Keeping on with their focus on the finest of emerging talent, they now tap Japanese artist in London Ittetsu for their tenth edition. Starting out on the first side in great fashion is "Lax", a raw and shuffling groove with the right amount of dust and bumpiness in its functionality. Next up the fittingly titled "Dub III" was probably our favourite, this rolling and emotive journey through deepness is reminiscent of Ion Ludwig. Finally on the flip is "11th", a reduced minimal funk jam with some wacky sound FX accompanied by a low slung groove that's perfect for the after-hours.

Review: Having established the On A Mission label back in 2014 to release their debut single as The Groove Brothers, old pals Jef K and Rhythm&Soul have finally got around to putting out the label's first long player. Fittingly, it comes from the duo, and features a far wider variety of musical treats than we've seen on previous releases. While largely rooted in their usual brand of dusty, chunky house, there are notable variations and diversions throughout. Check, for example, the hip-house revivalism of "De La Thang", the intricate musical flourishes and jazz-flecked grooves of "Funky Path", and the sample-heavy, interlude style opener "We're On A Mission".

  4. Carlos Sanchez & Alex Kaddour - "Caramba"
Review: Three years after making its' debut, France's Politics of Dancing continues to mix things up. The label's ninth release is a sampler of sorts, featuring tracks from a variety of affiliated producers. Fresh from dropping a fine E.P for Blind Box, Patrick Lopaski kicks things off. The slick, spacey deep house bump of his "Common Grounds" is swiftly followed by the similarly inclined, but arguably marginally more energetic "Late Night City" by Rhythm & Soul. Flip for the surging electric piano chords, hustling rhythm track and thickset bass of REda daRE's "Woman In Gold", and the Italo-disco influenced shuffle of Carlos Sanchez and Alex Kaddour's "Caramba", which makes great use of a throbbing, arpeggio bassline, and twinkling lead lines.

Manticore (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NAAR 004. Rel: 03 Oct 16
  1. Manticore
  2. Manticore (Jonny Nash remix)
  3. Manticore (Ian Blevins remix)
Review: After a three-year absence, former Redux and Cynic duo Machete Savane (AKA Saul Richards and Andy Bainbridge of Bad Passion Project) return to action. Fittingly, it comes on Bad Passion Project's Not An Animal Records. "Manticore" is something of a treat for those who like their disco electronic, atmospheric and doused in perm-sporting rock and '80s AOR influences (think winding guitar solos, Italo-disco arpeggio lines, punk-funk bass, and spacey electronics). It comes backed with two contrasting remixes: a throbbing, disco-tech revision from ESP Institute regular, and an ambient re-invention from Jonny Nash. The latter's alternately glistening and dreamy version is as sublime as you'd expect.

Review: Jordan Alexander's Mall Grab alias has provided nothing but goodness since his first EP in 2015, and he's released a staggering amount of material just over a year. Releases for stables like 1080p, Church and Unknown To The Unknown haven't gone unnoticed from us, and we now await his next moves with high expectations. Thankfully, he hasn't let us down with this new pack of bangers for Hot Haus, with the opener "I Just Wanna" mashing up harsh Chicago house with a little bit of disco sensibility. An instant hit. Flip to the B-side and you're presented with the off-kilter groove that is "Kalumbo", whereas "Feelin' Good" takes more of a traditional house approach to flap its ghetto-ass wings. An excellent little tip, this!

Review: Emerging hero of the Russian techno underground Pavel Milyakov aka Buttechno appears here for new Kiev based imprint Muscut. A diversion from his usual dusty, lo-fi techno experiments, here Milyakov presents some surreal dark ambient excursions ike on the dreamy opener "Mondjazz" and the jagged and disjointed arpeggiation of "Audiopfad" which is supported by textured and noisy field recordings for added measure. On the B side, "Mondjungi" rinses snares through tape delay so that they disperse frantically across the audio spectrum, while some woozy and sinister pads keep you calm amidst all the madness. Finally the title track creeps you out nicely with its gradually evolving pad chord swimming amidst haunted layers of odd tonality.

Review: The more Omar S material we get onto our shelves, the better off we all are. We love him, as you probably well know. The Detroit misfit has this knack for making simple house and techno sound rich and full of soul. That's not to say that he can't lay down some roughness and, in fact, that's exactly what we love about him. This EP, in particular, is one we've been wanting for a while' it's Alex O Smith at his damn best the whole way through, providing the dirt and the shine simultaneously. "Blown Valvetrane" is an absolute beat of an EP, a classic Detroit killer with an FX-drenched percussion, a simple drum machine groove and a whole heap of supreme nastiness - an absolute winner! "Busaru Beats" is a murky, distorted monster that lays in the shadows of its more aggressive A-side sibling, and "Deep Valve Cover" provides that classic Omar S hit; a joint that'll blow your mind with its utter simplicity and shady demeanour. SICK and BACK IN.

Review: Sydney based Swede Adam Stromstedt returns for the second release on Lyssna, which he co-runs with partners out of Stockholm and Amsterdam. He's previously done stuff on Bristol's Banoffee Pies and local imprint Junk Yard Connections, Mr. Tophat's label. His offering on the A side entitled "Sinbad" is a dusty and hypnotic deep house jam, that will appeal to fans of Thomas Melchior or more recently Rene Audiard. On the flip, there's label co-owner Flord King, who just so happens to be the aforementioned connection in Amsterdam. His contribution "Dapper" is another excursion in subtle trance induction with rolling bass, immaculately programmed rhythm and woozy pads for added effect.

Review: Segue is Jordan Sauer, an Edmonton based producer who has no doubt become a fixture on the Vancouver based Silent Season after several releases, including 2013's brilliant Pacifica LP. His new opus entitled Over The Mountains is another deep and dubby ambient excursion in all its dreamy and hypnotic glory, that is no doubt influenced by the serene surroundings of the Alberta countryside and nearby British Columbia; his former stomping ground. The entire album is consistent and cohesive, allowing you drift away blissfully over its entire duration and is brilliant from start to finish. If we had to pick some great tracks at random, our suggestions would be the echo-laden glacial dub of "Celestial", "Deep Valley" where Sauer proves his deft hand at sublime and ethereal electronica, or the deep and dusty armchair techno of "Alpenglow".
