It's All In The Mind (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: ES 017. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. Fred P - "It's All In The Mind" (6:39)
  2. Pjotr - "Waves From The Past" (8:30)
  3. Vakula - "Uliyanochka" (6:26)
  4. Benedikt Frey - "Untitled 3" (6:10)
Review: ** Repress of the Ethereal Sound classic! **It's time for another dose of mystical deep house vibes on the renowned Ethereal Sound. Their mini compilations are always eagerly awaited here at Juno HQ, and this time they showcase the talent of NY house wizard Fred P and Ukraine's main man, Vakula. Fred P's tracks are always a pleasure to listen to and "It's All In The Mind" reaffirms his talents as one of deep house's finest. The beat opens with an unusually punchy acid sound for Mr.P but soon dissolves and melts into something much more sparse and disconnected. New man Pjotr takes the helms on "Waves From The Past" and opens with a stunning chord shadowing a distant sample of a jazz gig which weaves and moulds its way through to the end. On the flip, Vakula drops an intricate percussion filled with bongos and subtle basslines like only he knows how to do best, while Benedikt Frey ties thing up in true Ethereal style on "Untitled 3", creating a stylish atmosphere and serves as a welcome addition to their already impressive artist catalogue.

  2. BFODAAS (6:25)
  3. Catching Feelings (6:13)
Review: Unstoppable Aussie house maverick Mall Grab takes a deep splash with three more premium cuts. "Pool Party Music" is a loopy, jacking slab of raw fun. If it soundtracks any particular time of a pool party it's when everyone starts pushing each other it. Joyously buzzy. "BFODAAS" takes us back to the earlier chapter of the party where the vibe is warming up, drinks are sliding down and there's not a cloud in the sky. Finally the warm, rolling bleepy "Catching Feelings" catches the moment where you're wrapped in a fluffy towel and cuddled up with pool friends old and new. Bliss.

Boogie Down (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: MAP 005. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. Boogie Down (8:09)
  2. In The Light (8:06)
Review: We would never be ones to challenge the importance and authority of Chicago's infamous Prescription label, a project in which Ron Trent played a fundamental role, but his more recent years on the Music And Power label aren't exactly a million miles away. This is true both in sound and general aesthetic, where Trent opts to communicate his thoughts and feelings through the medium of music. "Boogie Down", as the title suggests, is a little more funky and bass-heavy compared to his more usual deep house flex, but it makes for a welcome change to his catalogue, and any boogie made by Ron Trent is just fine with us. On the flip, "In The Light" is full of rigged percussion samples, wavy piano keys, and a jazzy bass tone, in what makes for a splendidly groovy disco-house cut. Lovely, as always, and you'll dig this if you're a fan of Kyle Hall and his output on Wild Oats.

  4. Satore - "Keep On" (5:31)
Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

African Indigenous Rhythms (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: MAP 008. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. The Dawn (11:14)
  2. Power Movement (10:00)
Review: While Ron Trent has always tended towards the prolific, his recent release schedule has been particularly jam-packed. African Indigenous Rhythms is his second 12" single of 2017, and contains two sparkling, spacey deep house cuts blessed with subtle Afro influences. We think the real killer is "Power Movement", where the legendary Chicagoan douses a shape-shifting, Afro-influenced rhythm with intergalactic electronics, bubbly motifs, a deliciously jaunty synth bassline, and some seriously woozy vocal harmonies. That said, A-side "The Dawn" is fantastic too, with Trent's gradually increasing the intensity throughout via energy-packed drum machine fills, cascading piano motifs, and darting synth solos.

Review: Following the release of his acclaimed debut album, In Waves, on ESP Institute, Lord of the Isles man Neil McDonald returns home to Firecracker Recordings. With six tracks to choose from, Parabolas of Neon is almost a mini-album. It boasts a quartet of sublime, mind-soothing ambient cuts, topped and tailed by two more rhythmic moments. Opener "Sunrise 89", a shameless dose of nostalgia built around heavy, bleep techno style sub bass and electronic motifs, offers a perfect balance between dancefloor heaviness and dreamy, saucer-eyed intent. Then there's the small matter of the title track, which is the kind of ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy chugger that you just want to hug at six in the morning.

  1. Fenix (Ron Trent remix) (11:39)
  2. Fenix (album version) (6:45)
Review: Here's something to get the blood pumping: a fresh Ron Trent remix of the title track from legendary Brazilian jazz-funk outfit Azymuth's most recent album, 2016's "Fenix". The original version is, of course, rather tidy - think darting synths and vocoder lines, dexterous slap-bass and rich, life-affirming chords - but Trent still manages to serve up a seriously good alternative version. He appears to have utilized every bit of individual instrumentation found on the master tapes, offering a subtle deep house/jazz-funk fusion cut full of loose-limbed drumming, intertwined solos and chords that pulse with sun-kissed positivity. It's not a particularly revolutionary remix, but when the musicianship is this good, why change it?

  4. Folamour - "Alerte A Babylone" (6:12)
Review: Folamour was responsible for one of the dreamiest, most colourful deep house records of recent times - the brilliant Shakkei EP on All City - so hopes are naturally high for this excursion on the producer's recently launched FHUO Records. He kicks off proceedings with the thrillingly addictive "Very First Touch", where dreamy pads and looped party samples cluster around a snappy, jazz-fuelled house groove, before ratcheting the energy levels up a notch or two via the rubbery slap bass, driving drum machine beats and warm Rhodes chords of "Alerte a Babylon". In between, you'll find Pravis' "L'Estaque", a stomping deep house floor-burner blessed with some seriously good, jammed-out electric piano solos.

Review: Danish producer Milan Zaks has largely impressed since releasing his first cassette of dusty, rave-influenced downtempo grooves last year. Modern Species, his first outing for Firecracker Recordings, is easily his most expansive and impressive release to date. Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

Review: Burnski's and Jon Woodall's Constant Sound sublabel Constant Black continues its march into the underbelly of heads down club tracks with this installment from the hitherto unfamiliar Constant. Whether it's Burnski under a different guise remains to be seen, but the quality of the tracks is the prime concern here. The A1 track is the perfect blend of tech house, with a hooky rhythm section and all manner of shimmering sonic delights spread out on top. The A2 taps a more reduced house vein, keeping the beats slender and the melodic elements subtle and dubby. The B side cut seems to merge the two to create a bubbling slice of swinging funk for the subliminal generation.

  3. Domino (Matador remix) (6:44)
Review: If you were around in 2006 and you hadn't heard Oxia's legendary anthem "Domino", you must have been sleeping under a rock! The track has certainly stood the test of time; so much so that the French producer has decided to celebrate its ten year anniversary with a series of remixes by some of the scene's current best. Some may say if it 'aint broke, why fix it? But rest assured that these renditions are equally worthy of your attention and come courtesy of Agoria's Sapiens imprint. m_nus alumnus Matador serves up a more hard hitting version than the original, where tough drums support adrenalised drones and Detroit style string stabs. Finally the master himself Robag Wruhme delivers the goods as always with his rather sublime "Lasika remix". The man's uncanny ability to recreate tracks that can compete with the original's quality is something to behold.

Review: As spring begins to turn to summer, Distant Hawaii is already in full-on sunshine mode. You'll certainly struggle to find a more cheery, sun-kissed and positive house cut than "Turn Your Love Around", the cut that opens this label debut from recent L.P.C debutant Mood J. Based around samples from the well-known 1980s dancefloor jam (we'll not mention the source), it's as colourful a chunk of boogie-fuelled party house as you're likely to find. The smile-inducing positivity doesn't end there, either: check, for example, the Balearic arpeggio lines and warm dream house vibes of "The Arps", the glistening Balearic house tunefulness of "Moonlight Drive" (all rubbery bass, cascading melody lines and life-affirming chord progressions) and the smoky deep house dustiness of "NY Vibration".

Review: It's not clear who is behind the Instinct label, but with this first release the mysterious producer displays an impressive grasp of dark garage and minimal house. The shuffling funk of "The Way" is an instant hit, marrying the razor sharp beats with melancholic synths and a killer bass wobble. "Pressure" deals in more abstract tones, but there's no let up in the nagging insistence of those crisp hi hats. "Cocktail" meanwhile takes a more uptempo approach with its bongo-embellished beat and subtle melodic fragments woven through the mix, and then "Instinct" knocks the ball out of the park with an utterly deadly 2-step workout for those who love Ghost Records and all that ace, moody pre-dubstep business.

Review: It's early days for Cinthie, having previously appeared on a split disc with stevn.aint.leavn on Beste Modus earlier this year. Here the emergent artist gets a whole 12" to themselves on the ever steady Brighton label Black Key, and the results are exemplary. From the title alone it shouldn't take too long to work out what "House Rhythms" is all about. With warm key stabs and a classic set of drums there's plenty to grab hold of on this refined slab of deep house, but it's actually "Liberty" that takes the prize. With its Rhodes-esque chords chopping out a simple but deadly riff, this is the one that will get shoulders shaking from the bar to the speaker stack.

Review: Freaks man Luke Solomon was still in the early stages of his career when he donned the Jean Caffeine alias and released Downtime, Turn Around & Go Backwards. Here, the 1998 EP is given the re-release treatment on reissue imprint Mint Condition. It remains one of Solomon's deeper and more considered collections of tracks. The title track, here featured in freshly re-mastered form, is a tech-tinged deep house treat, with rich chords and tumbling melody lines stretching out across a smooth, bass-heavy groove. "Jean's Train of Thought" peppers a swinging, Chicago-influenced groove with punchy synth horns and Sheffield style bleep melodies, while "Jean's Afterthought" is a deep and dreamy shuffler.

Review: The Marcel Vogel-fronted label Intimate Friends has already done sterling work releasing deep house from the likes of Roman Rauch and Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and now it's Simba's turn to step up and strut his stuff. The Goodbye Miss Misanthropy EP is loaded with curveball house music of the highest order, with "Remind Me Of Dancing" particularly standing out thanks to Jyroscope's inspiring vocal turn. There's some off-kilter jazz moods tumbling out of "ITB Jam", while a fractured soul vibe gives "Love Letter" its power. "Last Time" is a honey-coated closer that rides on the laziest of grooves with some added sample power from a titan of RnB.

It's a thoroughly classy slice of minimal house imbued with all kinds of organic elements to soothe limbs and massage minds amongst the up all night contingent. Font then takes over for the B side with three tracks that veer between classic minimal techno, tough jacked up house and an experimental skit to finish the record off.

Review: Demuja is in a Rush, so we'll make this review short and to the point. The EP sees Salzburg-based deep house man Bernard Weiss continue his recent rich vein of form, which has included outings on RTCT and Muja. On the A-side you'll find the pleasingly chunky beats, held organ chords, toasty bass and sampled blues vocals of "What's Up Buddy", a floor-friendly concoction with enough haziness to please the heads amongst us. Flip for the vintage Prescription Records style goodness of "Different From The Rest" and the woozy warmth of analogue-rich West Coast deep house shuffler "Getting Dark" (which, to be honest, isn't actually that dark).

Unhurried and gossamer in its synthetic sheen, there's a strong sense of science and futurism coded into these wonderfully extensive narratives as the ominous plod and clipped riff uplift of "The Surface", the oceanic epicity of "The Centre Of Time" and the playful thrust of the title track fuse to form almost 40 minutes of immersive electronic soul.

Review: This year marks 10 years since Bastian Volker first donned the Baaz alias. He remains one of deep house's most reliable producers, as this outing on longtime home Office Recordings deftly proves. He begins with the ocean-deep chords, softly spoken electronics and hypnotic groove of "Ween Been", before wrapping heart-aching pianos and drowsy chords around a barely audible drum track on the near-ambient bliss of "Absent". On the flipside you'll find the tech-tinged shuffle of "The Friend", where bolder kicks and snares rise above his liquid dreamscape, and the brilliant ambient electronica of sublime closer "Two (For You)". This is music for sunsets, sunrises and particularly sleepy afternoons.

Review: 2017 marks ten years since Jesus Gonsev dropped his first 12" on House Cafe Music. To celebrate a decade in the game, the producer returns with his first solo single since 2014. He's managed to rope in some high profile mates to lend a hand, too. First Glenn Underground and vocalist Sarignia Bonfa help turn soft-focus deep house shuffler "Unlimited Sky" into a deliciously glassy-eyed fusion of twinkling vibraphone solos and starry synthesizer flourishes, before remixer Patrice Scott breaks up the beats and turns the same track into a breezy blend of broken house and modern soul. Also worth checking is "Kamakrus", an attractive Chicago jack-track smothered in dreamy chords, and the spaced-out downtempo oddness of "Andromeda".

Limited release of 300 hand stamped copies, this is the union of Parisian/London based underground house labels Soleil De Nuit and Signatune. This London based producer has appeared previously on Parisian imprints such as Djebali and Robsoul which should give you an idea of what this guy's is about: raw, funky, dusty and loopy deepness. On the A side is the smooth and hypnotic groove of "AlbadaRE", while on the flip it's all about "X" which is the kind of dark and sexy swing fuelled house on the minimal tip, that you could imagine Daniel Bell playing in some dark Detroit basement at 6AM.

Review: Hungarian imprint All Inn has done a terrific job with this reissue of US tech-house stalwart Halo's 2000 cut "Future", a rolling, percussive, late night classic that remains one of the producer's finest tracks. Alongside the original version, there's a gaggle of new remixes stretched out across the 10" and 12" package. Coldfish provides a languid, jazz-tinged, deep "broken house" interpretation, with French producer Janeret opting for a hypnotic and loopy take reminiscent of Circulation's best work. The Howl Ensemble bumps up the bass for a more dub-fuelled deep house feel, while Jaffa Surfa opts for a more metallic tech-house vibe. Also worth checking is the PolAmbient interpretation, which launches the track into deep space via heavy sub-bass and intergalactic effects.

  3. Freundchen (Phil Gerus remix) (5:58)
Review: In late 2016, Hamburg nu-disco hero Tensnake served up yet another irresistible lo-slung anthem in the form of "Freundchen" and here come some more killer renditions by a who's who of the scene at present. Bergerac's Red Rack 'Em is first up with a loopy tool version which distills the track into its true essence: a respectful edit, if you will. Tuff City Kid Phillip Lauer is up next and works his signature magic as always on this classic house styled version, which will take you back to the UK's second Summer of Love. Finally, on the flip we have got Moscow's Phil Gerus with a neon-lit boogie down version: which we actually thought was the EP's finest moment.

Review: Romania's Ada Kaleh is undoubtedly one of the brightest (darkest!) talents currently operating out of Romania's rich musical landscape: quite a compliment when you consider the current wealth of talent in the nation's minimal techno scene at present. With another upcoming release on legendary techno powerhouse R&S this Summer, could this mean a wider recognition of such a niche sound in the greater electronic music community? Real name Iulian Cuculea, he helms the impressive eponymous imprint which, although mainly devoted to his own works, has also released tracks by emerging Italian talent Christopher Ledger and of course local legend Sepp of UVAR Records. These remixes taken from his 2015/2016 split opus Dene Descris are tremendous and stand up in their own right. Current scene favourite and Atipic boss Priku delivers a hypnotic mini-funk groover on his rendition of "Sonata Disonanta". As does young upstart Mihai Mihalcea aka Teluric on the subtle, ethereal and rolling trance induction of "Dialog Interior". Of course it couldn't be a Romanian minimal affair without a Nu Zau remix right? His version of "Detasare" being a great example of his evolved production style which forgoes the the woody and organic sounds of his recent past and instead focusing on a new found love of microhouse aesthetics.

  6. Compassion Crew - "II Y A" (5:06)
Review: Peculiarly, Fasaan offshoot Chalice has lain dormant since the label's first release appeared in stores back in 2014. Happily its Swedish parent label has decided to pull out all the stops for this comeback 12", gathering together six tracks from artists based across Europe and beyond. At six tracks deep there's not enough space to go into detail about every track, but suffice to say they're all loose, warm, quirky and generally lo-fi in feel. Highlights include the dreamy analogue synth-funk of Ruf Dug's "Cassette Boogie", the poignant, emotion-rich synth-wave warmth of Fahcrur Riaz Hazbullah's "Muriam", the clicking beats and intergalactic synth flourishes of "Heina" by Ruutu Pois and the frankly foreboding loose-house creepiness of "II Y A" by Dublin's Compassion Crew.

Review: Norway meets Finland in this barbed disco soundclash as Skatebard and Stiletti-Ana go toe-to-toe on this alluring, dubbed-groove triptych. "Standard Moderne" flickers with a playful harmonic bassline while stern synth stabs wash over the top with heavy reverb. "Anaska" takes us deeper again with a soft-brushed shuffle, woozy pads and another restrained-but-uplifting bassline. Finally "Universet" has much more of Stiletti-Ana's spiked-out gothic charm as the iced-out synths take much more of a prominent lead. This is the two sound of countries working together.
