Review: Adesse Versions is undoubtedly a canny fella. Few others would have thought have re-casting Yardborough & Peoples' "Don't Stop The Music" is a sweaty acid jam, but that's exactly what he's done here. It sounds like he's replayed the bassline on a TB-303, accompanying it with clattering drum machine percussion, wonky acid lines and a plethora of delay-laden vocal samples. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Elsewhere, he cuts up a well-known, disco-era soul groover and turns it into a chunky house loop-jam ("Slide"), before beefing up the beats and reaching for the TB-303 once more on disco-acid stomper "Kameleon". File under: guaranteed party-starters.

  4. Cheremushki Groove (The Cyclist remix) (6:53)
Review: Having lurked in the tape scene for many moons, AL-90 brings his dishevelled house sound to the dancefloor with this single for Tape Throb. Despite the name of the label, this is in fact destined for vinyl, and leads with the fuzzy yet funky "Cheremushki Groove", assisted in the process by Monokle. There's a whiff of Gerry Read's dusty production values present on "Fluid", but AL-90 seems locked into a more discernible beat. That changes on "Cataract" with its degraded hardcore breaks drowning under a sea of unforgiving processing, while Tape Throb label boss The Cyclist is an appropriate choice of remixer to finish the record with a crunchy yet focused version of "Cheremushki Groove".

Review: Since emerging in 2014, Alex Albrecht and Sean La'Brooy have delivered a consistent sheen of powerful but subtle deep house on Melbourne label Analogue Attic. Here they cast their net a little wider with a debut on fellow Aussie Eluize's Berlin label Night Tide. Basing each track off field recordings taken around Berlin, the EP sees them develop their soft-focus touch conceptually while still maintaining that great shroud-like signature that wraps you up tightly throughout; from the rippling chords of "Templehof" to the sunrise cascades of "Hinterhof" via the lingering cosmic notes of "U-Bahn/S-Bahn", this is bliss...

Review: Italian duo Hugo Sanchez and Edoardo Cianfanelli have been coming together to throw down all manner of discoid greatness for the likes of Slow Motion Records, and now they're on Malka Tuti with what has the potential to be a massive hit for them. Igino's vocal on the A-side track is undeniably catchy, and it sounds great both in the context of the original and simmering over Severino and Ray Mang's slow-burning gem of a remix. "Bella L'Estate" meanwhile sees the duo head into spooky, cinematic territory to great effect, marking out the kind of off-kilter disco jam to turn heads.

Review: Last autumn, Andrea La Pietra impressed with a debut double-pack on Melliflow that variously doffed a cap to Detroit futurism, jack-tracks, off-kilter electro and deep techno. Unsurprisingly, this follow-up EP boasts a similar amount of dancefloor eclecticism. After beginning with the bleeps, wobble bass and funk-fuelled tech-house beats of "Theoretically", he variously doffs a cap to classic Swag material (the undulating machine funk of "Dream Catcher", deep and woozy house ("Random Continuity"), and UK garage-influenced electro (the sub-heavy, funk-fuelled surge of "Into A Liquid Broken Place"). Happily, it all sounds club ready, with the latter track sounding like a late night anthem in the making.

Review: That's right, folks, this ain't no reissue! When the names Chiwax and Robert Armani come together, heads instantly turn and think about what year the tunes might be from, but these four house killers are from late 2016, and it's clear that Armani has absolutely no intentions of slowing down any time soon. "BacardI" has the essence of golden era Armani, but there's something more subtle at play, an polished aesthetic that dives deeper into modern techno while retaining all of his original style and flair; the lead tune "Fourty Nine" reinvents the classic Chi-town sound and bursts through the place with a minimal sort of guise. Over on the B-side, "Give You All My Love" slams some hard-ass drums over a skeletal melodic rift and the man's classic use of repetitive vocal samples, which leaves "Track 2" to deliver that inimitable Armani acid...raw and uncompromising as when we first heard it. BIG!

Review: Steven de Peven is Amsterdamer Awanto 3, a staple of local imprints Rush Hour and Dekmantel since 2010 (not to mention moonlighting as Red Nose District) who presents his new LP Gargamel, This is his second full length since 2014's Opel Mantra. Starting off this great EP is the single "Azrael" which features usual studio partner Darling on this deep nu-disco cut, as does the booming and lo-slung bass exercise "Hooli Goose". Our personal highlights were the spooky, rusty and dusted down jack of "This Is When We Met" (which will really remind you of that notorious villain from the Smurfs that the album is named after) or the deep and minimal electro groove of "Thick" which features another local legend in the form of Klakson's inimitable Dexter. Awanto 3 likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly and his synths sweaty as a Detroit summer breeze. The MPC wizard returns!

  3. Ray Kandinski - "Ways Of The Underground" (5:22)
  4. Sonderr - "Method" (5:56)
Review: The Lit Level series continues with another strong, multi-artist collection of deep house cuts. Baltra steps up first, combining Motor City style cymbals patterns, lilting chord progressions and punchy drum machine hits on the fuzzy "Never Let Go (Of Me)", before YancityGurl dives deep into the ocean depths via the rock solid kick drums and woozy pads of "We Leave". Flip for a chunk of tech-tinged, ghetto-inspired wooziness from experienced producer Ray Kandinski and the distorted, analogue-rich positivity of Sonderr's "Method". With its ghostly chords, quirky vocal samples, subtle acid lines and spacey chords, the track offers just the right balance between dancefloor weight and head-in-the-clouds beauty.

Review: Second time around for Blaze's 1993 outing under the Black Rascals alias, which famously featured Cassio Ware on vocals. "So In Love" has stood the test of time impressively, thanks in no small part to the way in which the "Shelter Mix" strikes a perfect balance between the swing of New Jersey garage, the melodiousness of early '90s deep house and the effortlessly soulfulness of Ware's vocals. The package contains two dubs: the near ambient bless of the cymbals-and-synths workout that is the "Piano Man Dub", and the fluid vibraphone style solos that stretch out across the groovy "Shelter Dub". Ware's "Radio Remix", which boasts AOR style guitar solos and a loose, hip-hop influenced beat pattern, completes a tidy package.

Review: Via releases on Smalleville and Mule Musiq (amongst others), Parisian producer Jacques Bon has established himself as one of France's foremost purveyors of loved-up, soft-focus deep house melodiousness. On this Beats In Space debut, he continues on a similar theme, wrapping fluttering, Balearic electronics and eyes-closed chords around a tactile, acid-flecked deep house groove on superb opener "Island". While "We Are" is similarly drowsy and yearning in feel, "Aura" sees him bring squelchy acid bass to the fore in a successful bid to mix things up a bit. This is explored further on closer "Dawning Light", a stripped-back house jam built around a killer groove and nagging acid lines.

  1. The First Time (7:22)
  2. Personal Question (6:17)
Review: Since making his debut in 2014, Bontan has made a serious impression. This first outing on Hot Creations follows much-played material on Madtech, Circus, Toolroom, Cajual and Suara. "The First Time" is retro-futurist in feel, featuring as it does a combination of undulating, acid-style motifs, jacking Chicago-style drum fills, bouncy tech-house beats and a drowsy, seemingly sampled spoken word vocal. Flipside "Personal Question" takes a similar sonic approach, utilizing a bolder, Adonis style bassline, nagging bleep noises, and delay-laden vocal snippets to conjure a sweaty, late night mood. Both tracks are solid rather than sensational, but undoubtedly have the right blend of ingredients to cause major dancefloor devastation.

Review: Throughout their career as purveyors of tech-house and club-ready electronica, Booka Shade has always boasted a softer, more contemplative side. Most of their albums boast a sprinkling of downtenpo tunes, and they also released a digital-only ambient album, Cinematic Shades (The Slow Songs), in 2008. Galvany Street, their latest full-length, continues this trend, subtly moving away from the dancefloor towards home listening pastures. Of course, there are nods to house and (more surprisingly) dub disco, but the meat of the album is a range of evocative synth-pop, downtempo and electro-soul songs featuring a variety of guest vocalists. While this may still surprise a few, it's arguably one of the duo's strongest albums to date. This "deluxe" edition boasts an additional CD packed with alternative versions of selected tracks.

Now label boss Al Bradley is stretching his wings with "Night Owl", a refined production that demonstrates his experience in the field of tech house. Goshawk comes on board for a remix that takes the deep sweeping original and makes it into an effervescent summer time groover, while label regular Michael Scott nudges "Night Owl" into stripped down late night territory. The third remix from Fourfourfour heads into oddball territory for those who like their house music off kilter and playful.

Review: This fine EP gathers together four previously unreleased exclusives from the latest edition of Cocoon's Dots & Pearls series, which was mixed by Markus Fix. His contribution to the EP, "Baroon" - a kind of contemporary re-imagining of the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" with extra TB303 acid lines - is undoubtedly one of the highlights, alongside the ethereal melodies and early morning fuzz of Argy's intoxicating "How Late It Was, How Late". Elsewhere, Christian Burkhardt peppers a rolling house groove with boisterous but blissful stabs on "Karambolage", and Jimi Jules serves up a loose and languid take on the foreboding, stretched-out Innervisions tech-house sound ("Euphrasia").

"Circuits" opens this new EP - for his own Constant Sound label - with a fiery, electrifying procession of telly drums and fidgety percussion folds, and this is stripped back even further on the magnetic banger entitled "X". Over on the B-side, "Flight 723" aptly takes us on a deeper journey, filled with mysterious synths tricks and imperceptible pad sounds, while "Lost In Translation" clicks away to a more familiar minimal tone, rounded off and sleeked into motion by deep, wondrous gleams of dubbiness.

Review: Fred Peterkin has decided that his latest full-length excursion should be credited to Captain P, an occasional alter ego first introduced on 2010 debut album The Incredible Adventures of Captain P. Musically, Escapism includes nods to many of his previously explored influences - slick Detroit hip-hop, Motor City techno, luscioius Chicago deep house, and so on - as well as audio musings on the effects of the Internet-driven news agenda (the superb, collage style cut-up "Social Media") and the nature of art itself ("21 Century Artist", a superb chunk of rubbery, soulful techno). For all the variety, it's the dancefloor-ready cuts that really sparkle, with the dreamy "Escapism", soul-flecked "All I Want To Say" and "These Times"- a brilliant hook-up with Lady Blaktronika - standing out.

  3. So Hot (Monchan 64 St Marks edit) (7:39)
Review: Boston meets Brooklyn as two long-standing contributors to their city's deep disco scenes unite to form Cedar Sound Workshop. Combining their love for the restrained groove Bradford James and Dailysessions-founder DJ Monchan crack open the filtered abyss on "Everybody Rocking On Your Dime" while "Deeper Than 17" fluctuates with a lighter, airier array of atmospheres and heartbeat-style synth bass. For added pops and crackles, Monchan also throws down a heavier guitar-crunching, bass-slapping disco version of "So Hot". Keep working it.

  2. Vis A Vis
Review: Baby Ford's minimal minded label is back in action with some psyched-out goodness from Alex Celler. The long-serving Greek producer has many strings to his bow, but this release finds him tapping into his foundational sound as a steady ticking groove carries a richly produced bed of chimes and tones for the deepest moments in the dance. Where "Feudade" is a lilting, soothing trip, "Vis A Vis" heads into a more mysterious headspace peppered with nagging rhythmic trysts, crafty licks and fulsome bass to get the synapses popping. It's exactly how stripped down house music should be done, inventive to the last and yet utterly danceable.

  3. Carlton - "Can't Be Without" (Damier & Trent Prescription mix) (15:41)
Review: BOOM! New King Street house sampler to satisfy all of your dancefloor needs and, looks who it is, our main man Kerri "Kaoz" Chandler at the middle of it all, doing what he does best. Originally released in 1999, Chandler's "Heal My Heart" is a soulful, magnetic house charmer full of loving vibes and euphoria, driven by Treasa Diva Fenni's wonderful vocals - the sort of house tune that even metal fans would dig. Blaze's 2002 "Shine" features with that unmistakable Shelter mix, high and mighty thanks to deep horns and meandering piano keys, leaving Carlton's 1996 bomb "Can't Be Without" to the insanely capable hands of Chez Damier and Ron Trent; their Prescription mix will please even the most proud of diggers who own the original pressing. Recommended and timeless slices of house magic.

Zulu EP (12")
Cat: TOOL 54101V. Rel: 03 Apr 17
  1. Zulu (7:50)
  2. Charger (7:51)
Review: Toolroom welcomes exciting new prospect Max Chapman to their flagship label. He burst onto the scene three years ago with great releases on Elrow, Snatch, Viva and Lost. He teams up with up and coming maestro George Smeddles here for two quality jams on this great EP. "Zulu" on the A side is the kind of rolling and funky tech house that just reeks of White Isle hedonism and will appeal to fans of Lost, Material Series or Knee Deep in Sound. On the flip "Charger" will absolutely blow the doors off any venue with its pounding groove and wall of bass which you could imagine Marco Carola or Paco Osuna playing at peak time in the main room.
