  1. Coffee Time (6:50)
  2. Seven Steps (6:19)
Review: After recent outings on Local Talk and Z Records, Ben 'Crackazat' Worrall begins 2017 with an outing on new imprint Eureka. A-side "Coffee Time" is typical of his jazzy, undulating, mixed-up house sound, with darting, layered vocal samples and snaking sax lines riding a killer jazz-funk bassline and dexterous rhythm track. B-side "Seven Steps" takes a more traditional approach to jazz-house, with Worrall working a killer groove created by fusing cut-up jazz loops and bouncy new drums. It's like a more forthright 21st century version of Boulevard-era St Germain, but with a little more UK garage influence in the bottom end.

Review: Following the release of his acclaimed debut album, In Waves, on ESP Institute, Lord of the Isles man Neil McDonald returns home to Firecracker Recordings. With six tracks to choose from, Parabolas of Neon is almost a mini-album. It boasts a quartet of sublime, mind-soothing ambient cuts, topped and tailed by two more rhythmic moments. Opener "Sunrise 89", a shameless dose of nostalgia built around heavy, bleep techno style sub bass and electronic motifs, offers a perfect balance between dancefloor heaviness and dreamy, saucer-eyed intent. Then there's the small matter of the title track, which is the kind of ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy chugger that you just want to hug at six in the morning.

  1. Swing Riddim (7:32)
  2. Lexa Groove (7:46)
Review: Tech-house's own cockney rebel, East End Dubs, has been busy of late. The master of DJ tools and rhythm-focused box jams kept up a steady stream of releases in 2016, delivering a trio of coloured vinyl treats. His first missive of 2017 comes on psychedelically inclined "splatter" pattern vinyl, but doesn't stray far from his usual musical blueprint. On the A-side you'll find "Swing Riddim", where liquid chords and spacey electronics cluster around an immaculately programmed, bass-heavy tech-house groove. B-side "Lexa Groove" is a slightly deeper and more becalmed affair, even if it does boast a more sizeable bassline and chunkier drums.

  14. Ion Ludwig - "Clock Caught" (11:26)
Review: Since launching back in 2009, Nervmusic has established itself as one of the leading outlets for atmospheric minimal funk, shuffling techno, and stripped-back deep house. The high esteem in which the Russian label is held is confirmed by the list of artists contributing to Quattroporte, a quadruple-vinyl collection of previously unheard material. Rhadoo, Melchior Productions LTD, Ion Ludwig and Metaboman all feature, delivering club-ready cuts that wring maximum emotion from the dustiest and most hypnotic of tracks. Highlights are plentiful, and include the off-kilter, Prince-inspired minimal funk of Half Hawaii's bass-heavy opener, "Skinny Papa", the percussive clicks and drifting chords of Cabanne's "Brom", and the free-jazz-goes-tech-house bump of "Abhorrent" by G76.

Review: London duo Payfone return to Golf Channel with two more stately ageless gems. "Justified" takes a similar tone to their previous floor-burner "Quarantine", all star-lit and subtly cosmic, but with added soul snippets and textures wrapping around the groove like tailored faux fur. "We Are Chains" builds even more fervour with serious spiritual muscle as a Romanthony-level vocal preaches gutsily over another brilliantly slow, steady and broadsword dub disco groove. Definitely something to phone home about.

  3. Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!) (5:42)
  4. Party Marty (5:47)
Review: The Detroit badman always delivers the goods, but he'd recently focussed on his more house-centric style thanks to a series of sleek, soulful releases. This time, he's come out all guns blazing with this new four-part killer, led by the absolutely nutty groove that is "Sink Holes" - a proper slice of Omar S acid, delivered in fine style and with his inimitable rawness. "HELL ON EARTH" is a moodier, funkier house tip with a jazzy side, while the flipside's "Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!)" is a fast, upbeat house bomb with a crazy little disco sample that floats amid the grainy bass drums. "Party Marty" is a no nonsense kind of lick, pouncing away with a steady, yet unmistakably Omar S-style percussion, and a heavy bass blow. This is one hell of a way to make an appearance this early in the year - highly recommended!!

  4. Dancing In The Future (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: Cris Kuhlen is more commonly known as a graphic designer, whose art in the last ten years has graced the covers of albums by Sabrine Star, Anouk and even Aretha Franklin. Here he appears as a producer himself under the name Dazion and delivers some some Afro influenced grooves reminiscnet of Fela Kuti on A side cut "Be A Man" while the afro vocals continue on B side offering "Dancing In The future" but musically it is '80s style Balearica reminiscent of Lauer or Fabrizio Mammarella. "Rigola" is a lo-slung synhthpop ditty that sounds like one of Chris Carter's more upbeat solo offerings heard on albums like Mondo Beat back in the day. Following up promising works in the studio as Tears & Marble previously, Kuhlen is one to watch.

  1. Justin Zerbst - "Clearance" (7:12)
  2. Ewan Jansen - "Red Silicone" (9:19)
Review: Perth, Western Australia is hardly known as a city synonymous with deep house yet in the late nineties locals Justin Zerbst and Ewan Jansen had a wonderful sound happening. It was no doubt influenced by local don Ben Stinga's weekly Undergound Solution radio show. It presented the underground deep house sounds of the time of Chicago as well the emerging sounds minimal from Cologne and Frankfurt. The results of their musical work was released on their indie imprint Red Ember, which in the last couple of years has finally received the recognition it deserves: just a decade and a half later, on these reissues. On the A side, Zerbst presents the quirky minimal funk of "Clearance". If you heard this one out today, you'd possibly mistake it for Seuil or Francesco del Garda and coincidentally: more of Zerbst's reissues have previously come courtesy of the former's Eklo imprint. On the flip, Jansen delivers a more powerful affair with the emotive, funky hi-tech soul of "Red Silicone" where this Detroit influenced groover features hynotising chords and tough rhythms.

Review: Jonny Rock has been doing it for years, from landing on Music For Freaks and Playhouse in the 00s through to charming the likes of Futureboogie and Oye Edits just last year. His muscular synth sound is a perfect fit on Bahnsteig 23, dealing in an impeccable encapsulation of 80s production principles to make killer dancefloor tracks that transcend the ages. "Unidentified Robot" is a particularly fun and freaky jam, while the "Megaeditofanedit" turns up the schlock factor to a devastating degree. This is party music as slick as it is silly, making for an irresistible combination to get the party started.

  1. In Yer Face (Bicep remix) (7:48)
  2. In Yer Face (Bicep Acid dub) (6:31)
Review: For those of a certain age, the opening seconds of 808 State's 1991 rave anthem "In Yer Face" - a combination of memorable melody lines and loved-up chords - are still capable of setting the pulse racing. Bicep have taken on the task of updating Graham Massey and company's anthem for a new generation, serving up two fresh interpretations. Wisely, they emphasize the spine-tingling goodness of the Manchester outfit's chord progressions on their A-side remix, getting rougher, tougher and weightier as the track progresses. Their flipside acid dub - where electro-inspired breakbeats, heavy bass and floatation tank melodies are expertly combined with ragged TB-303 lines - recalls the similarly-minded thrills of DJ Parrot and Mark Brydon's 'Sunshine Dub' of DJ Mink's early Warp slammer "Hey! Hey! Can U Relate?".

Review: Moby's back catalogue has been reworked rather a lot lately, with Drumcode following the lead of 2DIY4 in releasing a string of contemporary remixes of the Vegan beat-smith's classic productions. This 12" - the second of four the Swedish imprint is releasing - begins with a storming version of "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" by Enrico Sanguilano. It makes good use of the original's famous vocal sample, working it into a banging techno track that looks to the riff-heavy world of trance for inspiration. On the flip, the Manic Brothers offer their interpretation of "Go", combining the original's evocative chords and vocal samples with heavy new techno beats.

Something Else (1-sided hand-stamped 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 02. Rel: 26 Dec 16
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

  4. Arnaldo - "Screaming With A Blocked Nose" (7:04)
Review: In the sales notes sent to record stores, Smalleville has described this multi-artist affair as "a club night from start to finish". Certainly, the four tracks are pleasingly varied, moving from the 109 BPM bliss of Makybee Diva's untitled dream-house shuffler, to the energetic acid house/deep house fusion of "Monkeys On My Roof" by L'Amour Fou, a collaborative project whose members include the legendary David 'Move D' Moufang. Elsewhere, Arnaldo delivers a near perfect chunk of Detroit techno inspired deep house hypnotism ("Screaming With A Blocked Nose"), and Chicagoan producer Snad combines sweaty, bumpin' grooves and becalmed synthesizer motifs on the excellent "Excerptz".

Review: Fresh from an acclaimed outing on FACES, Giovanni Damico pops up on Marcel Vogel's inspired Lumberjacks In Hell label. The Italian producer is naturally in fine form here, with A-side "Tanzania" - a breezy, house-friendly rework of what sounds like a Tanzanian boogie cut - being one of the most addictive and life-affirming edits we've heard this month. You'll find more wiggling synthesizer lines on the deliciously dreamy and evocative deep house shuffler "I Need Me", while "Are You Somebody" is a successful exercise in subtly beefing up a low-slung disco-funk number. As if that wasn't enough to set the juices flowing, he completes a brilliant E.P with the jazz-fuelled deep house smokiness of "Humans After All".

This is razor sharp club music surely crafted by someone with experience, as the muscular thrust of "Track 1" suggests. There's a rugged charm in amongst the minimal disposition of the beats, which stands in contrast with the aqueous delights of "Track 2" or the housey funk of "Track 3". It's high grade dance music for DJs and party people, plain and simple.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's first missive of 2017 is a typically epic one. It sees him join forces with Pressure Trax founder Einzelkind for a double-pack's worth of trippy variations on a theme. All four tracks offer an excellent fusion of both producer's styles, with the Chilean's darting bass and intricate percussion programming providing a perfect foil for the German's odd samples, brain-melting electronics and forthright hypnotism. Each successive track is subtly different from the last, with the pair switching lead lines, sampled textures, and beat patterns. Throughout, you'll want to both dance and immerse yourself in their spaced-out sound. In other words, it's an excellent EP.

Review: Frankfurt innovator Rajko Muller returns as Isolee, working his magic this time for The Drifter's rather impressive Maeve imprint which in recent times has brought us fantastic work by Ed Davenport, Baikal and Ripperton. "Pisco" is a slow burning groove with phased marimbas that cause a hypnotic dream state, while "L5 Syndrome" dives deeper: this smooth and introverted trip is definitely suited to the early night as it is to the afterhours and reminds us of his earlier seminal works in the nineties, on labels like Playhouse. Finally, the title track is where Muller saves the best for last; this dubby, lo-slung groove is drenched in delayed and reverberated aesthetics.

This latest drop comes on Sounds Of The City, which has also supported the likes of Walt J and Brian Harden. "Just Wanna" is a sure and steady workout peppered with woozy chords and a nagging vocal lick, but "Movin Thru" is surely the record's stand-out moment. With just the right balance between the edgy chords and the rounded bassline, it's a simple cocktail that plays to Alce's strengths perfectly.

Review: Our first encounter with Oskar Offermann's music was via his excellent material for Japan's Mule Musiq, a cornerstone of the deep house sound, and what has now become a true staple of our dance diet. However, the dude has put out a whole load of excellent material through his own White imprint, a heft succession of releases which have earned him the deserved attention of many a DJ. This week, though, he's jumped ship and landed on Offenbach's Hardworksoftdrink label, a label hailing from the same town as the legendary Robert Johnson club. In fact, this EP is sublimely diverse in every respect, meandering between subtle swings of electro, and other, dreamier shades of house. If that wasn't enough, it's also all recorded with a blissfully pleasant analogue touch. Wunderbar.

To be honest, anything made in the 90s that was released on NY's mythical Nervous imprint doesn't really need an introduction but then again, it would be rude not to give one! There are three versions of "Love", each one deeper and sexier than the last. This is some real blueprint house business, bringing forth that unmistakable 'crunch' sound that's so heavily imitated today. Don't forget, there's also "Mellow (ambient mix)", a gorgeous house jacker with one monster bassline for the peak time hours!

Review: Montpellier's Yamen & Eda have been active participants in the French minimal house and tech-house scene since the dawn of the decade, though their releases haven been relatively limited. This solid 12" marks their first appearance on Clayton Guifford's Laate label. Clearly designed to satisfy late night dancefloors, it rarely deviates from their tried-and-tested formula (think intricately programmed electronic percussion, moody basslines, and just a hint of the hazy warmth of U.S deep house). Our picks of the bunch are the subtly acid-flecked "Luscious" (which is also given a hypnotic makeover by Phil Evans) and the more forthright dancefloor bounce of "Peabody", though all four tracks are of a reasonably high standard.

It's a sad by product of sample culture that Roland Clarke's 2000 house burner "I Get Deep" is not as well known as the tracks that have subsequently jacked his vocal, both credited and uncredited. For anyone wishing to strengthen their collection with US vocal house, this repress of the original Shelter release is a must have. All four versions of the track are prime examples of US deep house at its bumping best, though the combination of Clarke's booming vocals and jazz licked production from Shelter duo Freddy Sanon and Paul Simpson is very hard to top!

  2. Horror Show (live Weather 15 edit) (5:58)
  3. Acid 101 (6:12)
Review: It would be fair to say that the French minimal house scene is rather vibrant right now. That must be heartening for Parisian producer Seuil, because he's been delivering material in this style - with a few more techno leaning productions thrown in, for just over a decade. He begins with a "live Weather 15 edit" of "D-Force", where spacey chords and intergalactic electronics wrap themselves around a snappy, electro-influenced house groove. The clattering drum machine percussion once again comes to the fore on the warehouse-friendly strut of "Horror Show (live Weather 15 edit)", before he goes down a more psychedelic route on the ghetto-house/tech-house/acid house hybrid "Acid 101".

  1. Track 1 (8:39)
  2. Track 2 (8:11)
Review: Back in November 2016, previously unheard producer Session debuted with a two-track salvo of untitled tech-house bumpers. The mysterious act has plumped top retain a similar blueprint for this speedy follow-up. A-side "Track 1" focuses the action around a swinging, robotic tech-house groove, with rubbery electronics, dreamy pads and occasional spoken vocal samples helping things roll along. Flipside cut "Track 2" is a little darker and wonkier in ethos, but maintains the producer's obsession with rough-but-groovy rhythms, quirky electronics and thrusting, mind-bothering bass vibrations. Both tracks feel heavily influenced by classic tech-house material from the likes of Rob Mello and Swag, albeit brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: Francis Inferno Orchestra, known to his close friends and Griffin James, is one of Melbourne's finest house producers, and this guy is repping Oz hard, alongside the lies of Dro Carey and the Butter Sessions crew. He returns to Superconscious with "Kalamari Desert" and "Harmony" on side A of the plate; the former is a dreamy, broken remnant of a house tune, while the latter chugs forwards with wholesome drum programming and angelic melodies. On the B-side, "Kamakama" produces the first hint of something more moody, a little darker and more evil thanks to those gargling stutter basslines; Butter Sessions resident Sleep D provides the remix action, and comes through with flying colours after an injection of something a little funkier into the mix,

Review: Following one of his most active years to date - with releases on the likes of Slow Motion, Wake Up! and Barba, Dublin deepsmith Lerosa kickstarts 2017 with another on-point adventure on Idle Hands. As with a lot of Leopoldo's output, the vibe net is cast commendably wide as we kick off with the uptempo slightly Radioactivemanesque "Maryelen" and close down with a stripped back Basic Channel-style linear techno strutter "Subcouture". In between we have the wonderfully dubby disco charmer "Line Bass" and the more mystical, off-beat trip-out "Scruffy". Aces.

This is his latest EP, Alderaan, named after an extinct planet in Star Wars. ALMA01 includes the much sought-after Acid Saturday, the track that has had threads dedicated to it all over the web after RPR Soundsystem played it at Weather festival in 2015. The EP debuts the Almanah label, a new Romanian label under the curatorship of the Origami Sound / Interval crew.

Review: Sikret man John Dimas may not exactly be prolific, but he's certainly kept up a solid schedule of releases in recent times. Multiverse is his third 12" of the year, and his first for Olaf Zern and Dorian Paic's Raum Musik label. He starts as he means to go on with "Verse", a metronomic dancefloor shuffler that expertly combines a bold bassline and swinging drums with a hypnotic synthesizer motif. "Verse 1" introduces a punchy, break style beat pattern and creepy, otherworldly breakdowns, leading to a clandestine, early morning feel. Finally, he channels the spirit of UK tech house pioneers Swag on the skipping, acid-informed peak-time hustle of "Verse II".

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Review: Lazy Harts Club man Evan Baggs is not one for keeping up a regular release schedule; in fact, his last single of note appeared way back in 2015. This first appearance on Time Passages has arguably been worth the wait, though. The Neu Rochelle EP offers a quartet of contrasting cuts. For example, compare the rough-and-ready, bass-heavy Drexciyan space electro of "UTL", the rolling, acid-flecked old school tech-house of "Neu Rochelle", and the melodious machine jam that is closer "Still Breezin". Best of all, though, is "All Question All Answers", which comes on like an unlikely collaboration between 'Pure Trance' era KLF, bleep types Sweet Exorcist, and late '90s tech-house jams.

Review: Two years after first hooking up in the studio, Adam Port once again joins forces with veteran British duo Stereo MCs. In its original form, "Changes" sees mic man Rob B wearily half singing, half rapping over Port's melodious, tech-tinged deep house backing track. Although the music is quietly positive and attractive, the track feels strangely subdued. It's accompanied by a couple of fine, more obviously club-focused remixes. Port's own hypnotic, bubbly tech-house re-make expertly mines the Innervisions back catalogue for inspiration, while Freerange boss man Jimpster laces Rob B's entire vocal (spoken word section included) over snappy beats, rich bass, and immaculate deep house chords.

Review: For his latest trip into wonky, late night techno territory, long-serving producer Frank 'Reboot' Heinrich has enlisted the noted remixing skills of minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos. While the Frankfurt producer's original version is undeniably skewed in its approach - think quirky vocals over shuffling tech-house rhythms and trippy electronic noises - it's positively sane in comparison to Villalobos' two versions. The first, a mere 12 minutes in duration, boasts a thrilling combination of twisted acid lines, oddball vocals and effects-laden, jazz-inspired techno drums. The second, which stretches out across the entire B-side, is utterly bonkers: a psychedelic electronic jazz opus that bobs and weaves for 25 mesmerizing minutes.

Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

Review: The mid-to-late '90s work of US deep house duo Teflon Dons had largely gone overlooked, until Jeremy Underground decided to re-issue some of their vintage material on My Love Is Underground in 2012. Here, Must Have Records gets in on the act, delivering a double 12" featuring four previously released classics - including a very early appearance from soul man Gregory Porter on the brilliant "Tomorrow People" - and a quartet of previously unheard gems from the archives. Highlights from the latter category include two chunks of heavy electro/deep house fusion ("Zu Mountain (Dub)" and "Inbetweener's Dilemma"), and the swirling, bass-heavy bump of "Freak Me (Dub)".
