The Time (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: COB 8. Rel: 24 Oct 16
  1. The Time
  2. Sea Shell
  3. The Time (Night Sea Jorney remix)
Review: As well as steering Stripped & Chewed, Garrett David has been holding down a residency at Chicago's Smart Bar for some time. On a roll following an appearance on Distant Hawaii, The Time finds the producer in fine fettle with a classic approach to deep house clearly born out of the city he calls home. "The Time" is a shimmying jam powered by crafty dub processing and a steady hand on the arrangement, while "Sea Shell" is a more passionate affair that swoons through key changes. The Night Sea Journey remix of "The Time" is a more brooding affair punctuated by synth accents for a deeper end result.

Review: Here's something to get excited about: a first missive from the My Love Is Underground camp for three long years. In an attempt to make up for lost time, boss Jeremy Underground has gathered together seven fresh tracks, and stretched them across two weighty slabs of wax. As usual, the featured deep house cuts tend towards the classic and U.S-inspired, variously doffing a cap to New Jersey, New York and Chicago, via ear-pleasing organ riffs (see DJ Steaw's excellent "East Orange"), soulful vocal snippets (Teflon Dons), clear boompty influences (Tristan Da Cunha's Salt 'n' Pepa-sampling "Hit Up On This"), and breezy disco (Ebony Cuts). Franck Roger's contribution, "For Me", is also one of his sleaziest, basement-friendly tracks to date.

  1. Melchior Productions LTD - "Hillbilly High" (5:29)
  2. Vincent Lemieux - "In Momo’s Jeep" (7:04)
  3. Barac - "Ordinary Conversations" (11:10)
Review: After getting off to a strong start, ReSolute's DisDat sublabel noticeably raises the bar with a heavy hitting cast for its second edition. Thomas Melchior takes a break from his usual haunts to drop a track brimming with micro house flair, as "Hillbilly High" throws down an infectious run of goofy samples over a solid beat. Vincent Lemieux meanwhile takes a smoother route with the warm chord-laden atmosphere of "In Momo's Jeep", working crafty percussion impeccably in the deep surroundings. Rising talent Barac meanwhile gets fresh with the cheeky synth lines on his own offering, making this an EP of fresh variations on the minimal house sound.

  1. Bright (6:13)

  3. Bright (Varhat remix) (9:58)
Review: Further proof of the current rude health of Paris's deep house scene arrives in the shape of another rock solid EP from prolific producer Mickael Jeanerret, AKA Janeret. The Bright E.P more than lives up to its' name, with the title track delivering a near perfect blend of bushy-eyed beats, ethereal pads, deep space riffs and fluttering, manipulated vocal samples. The EP's other original cut, "Rear", boasts similarly drifting chords, but also a tech-tinged beat pattern that's as bold and funky as they come. Rising star Varhat does a terrific job remixing "Bright", retaining Jeanerret's dub techno-inspired textures, whilst adding his own Syclops-inspired synth bassline.

  1. Reach For Love (5:14)
  2. You've Got Me (5:16)
Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

  4. Air (Ben Buitendijk remix) (6:16)
Review: Mickael Jeanneret is Janeret, a deep house producer from Paris who now finds himself with a release on promising new Russian label Berg Audio who have previously served up the likes of iO (Mulen) and Andre Kronert. For the Kord EP, the title track is a densely layered yet sublime and rolling journey through the dub techno sound and executed tastefully. Its remix by Berlin tech house hero Diego Krause respectfully retains the dubbiness yet injects it with more groove and swagger. On the flip, "Air" ventures down a much deeper route with emotive pads and hypnotic dub chords working to great effect. The Dilated Pupils affiliated Ben Buitendijk delivers a brilliant rework, covering the track in the right amount of dust and rust like he only can.

  4. Q Divison
Review: Patrick Lopaski's "Common Grounds" was one of the highlights of Politics Of Dancing's recent split E.P, so hopes are naturally high for this first appearance on Julien Sandre and Konstress's Blindbox imprint. There's a glitchy, Herbert-ish swing and bump to opener "Bon Voyage", with cut-up textures, solos and melody lines combining well with a garage-influenced groove. This latter element is emphasized further on the accompanying SIT remix, which includes a bolder, heavier bassline. Lopaski expertly blends two-step, tech-house and swirling deep house on flipside cut "KD-07", while closer "Q Division" sees him move further towards early noughties Chicago deep house territory.

  3. Tryna Get My Act Together (6:30)
Review: Slyngshot seems to specialize in creating tracks that neatly sidestep convention, blending dusty deep house sounds with hip-hop influenced breaks, and left-of-centre 4/4 rhythm tracks. He's at it again on the Love Unlimited E.P, which sees him return to his Yappin' imprint after an excursion on Place To Be earlier this year. He begins with the woozy, cyclical chords, fusty textures and crackly post hip-hop beats of "180554", before diving into Dolo Percussion style drum machine abuse on the deliciously energetic and rhythmic "Love Unlimited". Those after more straightforward house thrills should check flipside "Tryna Get My Act Together", where crusty cymbals and drowsy, looped melodies ride a bombastic groove.

  3. I Gave My Love (Shan & Gerd Janson mix) (6:13)
  4. Deep (feat Seebase - DJ Oyster edit) (5:51)
Review: Only those with long memories will remember David 'Move D' Moufang's short-lived Housegrooves alias. It was only used for a single 1993 release, Volume 1, a 12" that has long been in-demand amongst deep house diggers. Misfit Melodies have decided to give it the reissue treatment, partnering two of the EP's most lauded cuts with fresh remixes and edits. In the former category you'll find the low-slung analogue bass, rolling beats and spacey synth melodies of "I Gave My Love", and the more bumpin', New Jersey influenced Seebase collaboration "Deep", which here gets a slight edit from DJ Oyster. The most impressive rework comes from Shan and Gerd Janson, who turn "I Gave My Love" into a saucer-eyed chunk of piano-heavy, rave-era breakbeat-house bliss.

  4. Orange Sky (7:11)
Review: Pete Herbert and Phil Mison's Reverso 68 project is hard to beat when it comes to classically-informed disco, Balearic and house music, having shored up on Eskimo, and Is It Balearic? in the past. It's been some time since they dropped fresh productions of their own, so this new four-tracker comes as a welcome injection of seasoned, high-end grooves for the slow but heavy part of the night. "Piece Together" is a natural opening gambit, letting acid basslines rub up against delayed strafes of synth and subtle guitar chops in the most grooving of ways. It's set the perfect tone for the rest of the EP to follow, guaranteeing this 12" a place in scores of bags.

Review: Dutch producer Casper von Banniseht sidles over to Bristol stable Boogie Cafe to present a three-track 12" of impeccable dusty house grooves imbued with that Detroit-esque feeling that oozes out of a Moodymann or Theo Parrish record. "Bossa" revels in choppy broken beats and plenty of choice samples in a most loose and soulful of concoctions, while "Lazy" cools down to a simmer with subtle disco licks making the most immersive of deep house jams. "Lone" meanwhile plies a more chipper trade with its hooky chord stabs, but still the vibe remains smooth and laid back, just how the Boogie Cafe crew seem to like it.

Review: Nick Marshall and Victor Aguinaga's Perpetual Rhythms label operates out of Chicago with a focus on the sifter side of the city's house music legacy, or atleast that's how this latest split double-pack Metaphoric Expressions sets out initially thanks to Aguinaga's Chicagodeep guise. There are tougher moments to be enjoyed when Marshall takes over as Taelue, but still the emphasis is very much on soul-stirring machine beats and synth tones in a fine tradition of true deep house. In the same way that Fred P can weave magic out of minimal elements, the Perpetual Rhythms crew know exactly how to get under your skin through immersive vibes alone.

Review: Serial Sex Tagger Sotofett flips to his other mothership for a casual drive to deepest Turkey. All smoky woodwind and eastern chords, wafting heavily over a roomy percussive drum arrangement, there's a great sense of mystic charm to his foggy sojourn. New artist Vera Dvale makes their debut on the flip with a dense drone that pulsates and quivers with a life of its own, gradually getting lighter and lighter towards the end. As with all Sotofett-related releases, this is a real record to lose yourself in.

Review: Thanks to a string of curiously hard-to-pigeonhole, but deliciously inspired EPs, Lyon's Pilotwings find themselves amongst the most talked about acts on the French electronic underground. Les Portes of Brionnais, their hotly anticipated debut album, is unlikely to quell the hype. For starters, it's an inspired set full of entertaining, melodious and inventive tracks. It mostly draws on music from the 1980s for inspiration, from the Fairlight CMI-driven soundtrack synth-pop of Jan Hammer, and early Chicago house, to Italian dream-house, British new wave, and the dreamy, global ambience of Finis Africae. While there are a few wild dancefloor moments, for the most part it's a joyously downtemnpo and left-of-centre excursion that could feasibly be described as "Balearic".

Review: Armon 'Aybee' Bazile is undoubtedly one of electronic music's most consistent performers. He's barely put a foot wrong since making his debut in 2004, and continues to deliver high-grade material on a regular basis. Predictably, there's plenty to get excited about on this 12", too. "Man Over Machine" is a winding, constantly building gem, with rising and falling, spaced out melody loops riding an off-kilter techno rhythm. On the flip, you'll find the deep space chord progressions, delay-laden electronics and deep tech-house grooves of "Build Them (Solstice Mix)", the intricate pianos solos and Soichi Terada style deep house vibes of "Legacy", and the off-kilter deep house/IDM fusion of "Melted Chains".

Review: Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling have been pretty quiet since releasing the Two Man House Band E.P this time last year. Whether or not this surprise 12" is a precursor to a new LP or not, the two original tracks showcased here are vintage Session Victim. While many will love the jazzy, sun-kissed deep house positivity of "Up To Rise", it's nowhere near as potent a dancefloor force as "Matching Half", which benefits greatly from looped riffs that doff a sly wink to Fleetwood Mac, killer keys, and some rush-inducing chord progressions. Byron The Aquarius delivers a killer flipside rework of that track, too, which ups the jazziness whilst beefing up the bottom end.

Review: The latest installment of Alex Omar-Smith's Side-Trakx series - long an outlet for work that doesn't fit into his usual house/techno template - is a little different to its' predecessors. For starters, it features four versions of one track: Nite Jewel collaboration "Sky Train". The full-vocal original is something of a treat; a radio-friendly fusion of dreamy deep house sounds, picturesque vocals and a smooth but undulating, Herbie Hancock-influenced groove. The superb keys-work of local jazz pianist Ian Finkelstein comes to the fore on the hazier "Chattanooga TN" and "Finkell Avenue" versions (the latter an ambient treat), with the "Texas TN" mix moving further towards jazz-funk territory.

Review: The Blind Jacks Journey label could be thought of as the UK's answer to Mood Hut or Rhythms of the Pacific; an imprint keen to promote the virtues of hazy "dream house". The North Yorkshire outfit sticks to the script here, serving up a mini-album of deliciously lazy, wide-eyed treats from previously unheralded producer Aleksandir. On the A-side you'll find the picturesque goodness of "Turtle Dance", the blissful ambient house warmth of "Turtle Nipper", and the melancholic jazz-house dreaminess of "Turtle Bay". Flip for the more exotic "Istanbul", the tropical synths and steel drums of "By The Beach", and the creepy downtempo jazz of "Omar".

Review: World Building is the new label from Beautiful Swimmer Ari Goldman and it gets off to a veritable flyer with The Fatal Flaw In Disco from the master Mark Seven. Proprietor of Parkway and Parkwest Records, Seven is among the most highly respected of record dealers and DJs and a fine choice to kick off World Building. We've been massive fans of the Parkway tackle here at Juno HQ and hopefully this banging 12" will retrospectively see collectors and selectors dig back through the label. Some five tracks deep, The Fatal Flaw In Disco sees the Stockholm-based Seven continue to explore his love of classic US deep house with the sax-addled pump of "The Fatal Flaw In Disco (U-4-Ria)" a considered highlight. If you've seen the Swimmers at any festival jam this summer you should be familiar with the cuts on this 12" and expect to hear them in the dance a lot more as the year goes on. Big record.

While the Norwegian touches on numerous styles across Vibe Telemetry - new age, ambient house, Scandolearic, Italo-disco, vintage Italian deep house and even saucer-eyed techno - each have been filtered through his hazy, hard-to-define desire to create music with its' own distinctive sense of atmosphere. As a result, it's a hugely vibrant, colourful and inventive set, with Severud effortlessly creating a set of tracks that works as a coherent, easy to listen to whole, despite the presence of numerous future floor-fillers. As debut albums go, it's something of a cracker.

Since then, that particular 12" has become something of an in-demand item, with the lead cut naturally attracting the most attention. This issue of "Deeper" contains Herbert's original in all its glory - think loopy, low-slung, jazz-flecked hypo-house with woozy, early morning breakdowns - and a fresh remix from label-hopping producer Stuart Li under his familiar Basic Soul Unit alias. He subtly beefs up and speeds up the track, adding some Detroit-influenced keys and fizzing new percussion. The result is a tasty techno revision that pays due reverence to Herbert's thrilling original.

T Margos kicks things off with the Pete Namlook chords, rugged acid lines and fizzing, Detroit-inspired beats of "AA", before Doula travels further into deep space with the acid-flecked intelligent techno spaciousness of "It's All In Your Mind". Ray Kandinski expertly balances dreamy chords, hissing cymbals and broken techno rhythms on the quirky "Dirty Sneakers", before DJ Lucy makes merry with alien melodies, buzzing synthesizers and drowsy chords on the rhythmically loose and languid "Mike L".

  4. Tom Ellis - "200 Yards Below" (5:20)
Review: Synthetic Gold comes into being with a clear commitment to the finest stripped down grooves to be enjoyed in the current climate. Isherwood has already been turning heads for a little while, and brings a truly submerged, experimental mood to "Output 1-2", while Easy Changes ramp up the tempo and get quirky in the minor details of "Sviat Gepard". Nu Zau lays down a perfect crystalisation of the Romanian sound, while Tom Ellis delivers a crackling, electronic piece that edges away from his usual organic sound. It's a fitting final suggestion that this is a label intent on encouraging its artists to head off-piste when delivering a track for release.

Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12". In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

Review: Two of the finest words in the dictionary - unofficial and edit. Throw in the two nouns - Joe and Claussell - and you've got a stupendously hot prospect on your hands. Lavish grooves, rich instrumentation, precision curation and grooves so uplifting you need lead shoes to keep you attached to the earth. As with 2014's inaugural collection, once again we're treated to the full spiritual spectrum from his epic take on Barbara Mason & Bunny Sigler's already beautiful "Locked In This Position" to a cathedral level take on The Fifth Dimension's "Aquarius", this really is a special (not to mention highly limited) 12".

Review: Remarkably, it's been 23 years since Motor City legend Alton Miller released his first 12". Here, he dips into the archives of previously unreleased material to present a trio of cuts From The Vaults. He's at his positive best on "Waiting For You", a loose and organic sounding deep house gem smothered in slick, modern soul vocals, hazy chords and jazzy musical motifs. There's a slightly more bumpin' feel about the similarly soulful "Run & Hide", which benefits greatly from chunkier beats, bolder bass, and some fabulously spacey synth solos. Best of all, though, is instrumental flipside "In The Spirit", where dislocated vocal snippets and winding melody lines ride a dense, Afro-influenced drum track.

Review: Compared to his usual bouncy house tempos, Japan's increasingly re-emerging house delight Soichi Terada is back with some slower fare, but it's no less steeped in nostalgic 90s sass. "Tell Me What" is quintessential Terada, beaming out positivity from every channel with its catchy piano hooks, keyboard stabs and funky-ass breakbeats. It's a wonderful surprise that the track in reverse is included on the 12" as well. For an added treat, Mystic Jungle Tribe affiliate Whodamanny takes control on the B-side with two distinct versions ranging from the plastic 80s disco funk of the first remix through to a more curious, off-kilter "Post Modern Jazz Reinterpretation".

Review: There's been plenty of hype surrounding the YYY Series since it launched earlier this year. So far, information has been limited. We know that the mysterious label is associated with the Paris-based Yoyaku agency and record shop, but not the identities of the producers behind the releases. Still, as long as the quality remains high, few DJs will care. "398A" is a chunky, floor-filling affair, with woozy, Detroit style synth motifs joining forces with a bustling, pleasingly percussive groove. It's not quite deep house, tech-house or techno, but rather something in between. Arguably even better is flipside "398B", whose combination of fluttering synthesizer riffs and two-step influenced deep house beats is both beautiful and floor-friendly.

Review: Jamie Jones' esteemed tech house imprint returns to wax! This time it's courtesy of Solardo; the UK duo of Mark Richards (MRK1) and James Eliot who have appeared previously on Madtech, Viva, Kaluki and Lost. On the Tribesmen EP, the title track showcases the tribal leanings that the title may suggest. This dynamic track's stripped back and percussive driven tendencies start off nicely, until that rolling bass and exotic chant soon comes into the fold. On the flip, the charmingly titled "Psycho Girlfriend" is more representative of the London label's sound on this downright funky, totally bumpin and undeniably druggy stomper that just reeks of late night hedonism.

Review: Given that Scuba was officially the last DJ to play at Fabric before the club's controversial closure, it seems rather fitting that he's the first DJ to contribute to their lauded mix series since then. As if keen to celebrate the Farringdon venue's legendary status, he's pulled out all the stops, creating an inspired musical journey created using snippets of no less than 42 tracks. Scuffed, lo-fi techno grooves, warped bass music sounds, feverish African rhythms and throbbing electronics bob in and out of the mix, with Scuba effectively creating entirely new tracks by blending elements of tracks and remixes from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Pearson Sound, Patrick Cowley, Cinematic Orchestra, Ben Klock and Donato Dozzy. It's hugely impressive, all told, and amongst the Hotflush producer's best work.

Review: Last year, Sophie "Willow" Wilson scored a surprise dancefloor hit with "Feel Me", which was one of the standout cuts on a superb multi-artist EP from Workshop. Happily, the four tracks featured on this debut EP proper for Workshop are equally as alluring. The Manchester-based producer begins with a chunk of spacey, R&B and garage-influenced deep house ("Track 1"), before fusing distant, stop-start percussion hits and heavy bass with her own sweet vocals on "Track 2". Flip for the fluid, soft-touch harp melodies and subtle drum rhythms of "Track 3", and the wonderfully deep "Track 4", which shuffles along hypnotically on waves of low-slung New Jersey bass, dreamy chords, and heart-warming percussion.

Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

Up and coming house heads K15 and FYI Chris reportedly invited Lismore and Ben Houghton to take part in this collaborative release, resulting in four tracks that wouldn't sound out of place soundtracking a balmy afternoon dance on the Adriatic Sea. Oozing quality and soul throughout, there's a distinctly laid back flavour to the house on offer across this release, although FYI Chris add a touch more bite with their grubby lo-fi synth lines on "Sugar".

  5. Highly (3:45)
Review: Japanese newcomer Powder debuted in impressive fashion with the Spray 12" issued through Sling & Samo's Born Free label earlier this year consisting of diverse yet equally trippy dancefloor tools. We were not the only ones impressed, as Andrew Hogge has got his Lovefingers on some fresh Powder produce for the latest ESP Institute 12", the five track Highly. Again it's Powder's diversity and her knack for blending the functional with the trippy that really impresses here with opener "Lost Of Light" setting the tone. Glassy textures slip over the taut, minimal groove, with vocal effects drenched in all manner of delay - a most humid and intoxicating production. Tempos vary as the EP progresses, from the slow burning throb of "Manhole" to the cooing house delights of "Humid Wind", yet Powder's qualities remain undimmed throughout. The two briefer cuts that close out the record are quite delightful productions that seem perfectly tailored to opening and ending a mix.

  2. Monoaware - "Side Stepper" (7:22)
Review: Sushi tech Records has always been a favourite of ours but, looking back at the entirety of its catalogue and more recent releases, we have too admit that we slightly underestimated the label over the last ten years. not anymore; each and every release that Yossi Amoyal drops is better than the last, and their most recent compilation is still proudly turning at 33RPM on our HQ turntable. It's a new two-tracker this time, led by Ion Ludwig and Monoaware, both interesting deep house producers who know the meaning of subtlety. The former delivers a fine, dubbed-out house tune called "Be Fifty Times Two" - most certainly one for the dub techno enthusiasts or fans of the Workshop latel - while the latter's "Side Stepper" takes a more minimalist approach in the same vein as the Villalobos school of thought. All in all, a masterful and beautifully executed EP.

Review: Back in 2012, the collective talents of Dego, Kaidi Tatham, Mr Mensah and Matt Lord combined for a superb album on 2000Black. Last year saw the quartet reconvene in the studio for a 12" snappily titled Off The Christmas Card List (possibly named in homage to anyone calling their music broken beat) which was mooted as a precursor to a new LP! Another taster now arrives on 2000 Black in the shape of the Cascade 12", brandishing a triplet of toasty future boogie standards primed for dancefloor deployment. The warm Rhodes, shuffling percussion and occasional twisted FX of "The Inside Is The Outside" stand out, as does the sweet soul strut of "The Believer", though there is a reason the title track hogs the A-side. That reason? It's a delight!

Predictably, they've chosen four great cuts to release. First up you'll find the elastic synths, alien melodies and fizzing Motor City percussion of early tech-house style shuffler "Pieces Of Dream", before the P-funk-influenced UK-US garage fusion of "Leroy Garage" takes us in an altogether breezier direction. Review: Perth prodicer Ewan Jansen has become something of a hot property since returning to action last year after a 14-year hiatus. This outing on his similarly re-born Red Ember imprint follows hot on the heels of killer EPs on Going Good, Inner Balance and Adelaide Soundworks. It finds Jansen in predictably fine form, serving up deep house cuts that bristle with toasty warmth and gentle positivity. Highlights are plentiful, too, from the seductive shimmer of toasty opener "Aqua Libre" and bustling, bleep-heavy shuffler "Plankton", to the Ron Trent-goes-to-South London hum of "Freckles". Pitched-down closer "Castel", a study in futurist atmospherics and '90s style electronica, is pretty darn tasty, too.
