Earls Booom!!! Edits (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BOOM 1 . Rel: 12 Dec 16
  1. Thank You (6:37)
  2. Badadu (6:11)
  3. D-D-D (6:33)
  4. The Paper (feat K-Tel) (5:16)
Review: Understood to be the work of Earl Jeffers, this fresh slice of white label edit goodness comes with four chopped up jams honed for ultimate dancefloor impact. First up is "Thank You", which takes a tough house backdrop and throws some fiery soul down on top of it in a manner you could imagine Moodymann dropping with satisfaction. "Badadu" meanwhile heads into a more delirious headspace, the sampling meeting with fierce showers of synth FX and a generally raucous arrangement. There are no prizes for guessing what "D-D-D" samples, but it does so with all the fireworks you would want from a house re-rub of such a classic. "The Paper" makes for a fine finishing move with its choppy vocal slices and swooning strings.

  3. Osmosis
  4. Racily
Review: Steadily building up his profile within the realm of heads down techy house music, Lee Burton lands on Elephant Moon with an EP that fizzes with production flair while retaining a serious floor-minded focus. "15:30 (The Jam)" bounces along with the kind of slinky, shuffling energy you'd expect from an early Cynosure Record, while "12 Angry Apes" keeps the swing up while heading towards a more upbeat headspace. "Osmosis" is one of the standout jams on the record, managing perfect threads of piano and chord in the mix to make for a sharply honed club track. "Racily" then rounds the EP off with a diversion into lush electro, maintaining the soothing tones from the rest of the

  1. Claudia’s Trip (6:51)
  2. Claudia’s Trip (radio Slave J.A.W.K.F.C remix) (6:22)
Review: From his turns on Mahogani Music and Delusions Of Grandeur to his own Shake label, Dan Shake is proving to be a formidable force in British dance music right now. With a sample heavy approach and a fearless instinct for confrontational fun in his productions, he returns to his imprint with a sure shot slice of acidic excitement. "Claudia's Trip" is a rowdy jam that flings recognisable licks from perennial hits around the mix until a monster 303 line takes the lead. In hammering home the point about the size of the track, he's opted to just sign a sole remix on the flip, and tapped up Radio Slave to deliver the goods. Matt Edwards opts for a minimalist approach to contrast with the original, making a jerky club wrecker in the process.

  2. Life Goes On (6:18)
  3. Tree's Dance (7:08)
Review: Giammarco Orsini kicked off Heko Records last year with the first volume of Experiential Learning, and now he's back for round two following a brief spot on Elephant Moon earlier in the year. "Solar System Is Vital To The Planet" dominates the A side in a swinging, punchy style of techno that calls to mind the likes of Stephen Brown. "Life Goes On" on the flip however comes on with a housier demeanour, keeping the Detroit synth tones plush and the mood mellow. "Trees Dance" breaks away into a stripped back electro style that sits as a neat foil to the grooving 4/4 elsewhere on the EP.

Review: Mulen Records founder IO is one of the hardest-working men in electronic music. Since making his debut on Diynamic in 2009, he's put out a string of impressive singles covering everything from hazy deep house to hypnotic minimal techno. The expansive Letters and Numbers is his second release for Apollonia, and sees the Ukrainian showcase six cuts over two weighty slabs of wax. Most of the tracks explore subtle variations on a deep house theme, albeit with extensive use of tech-house style electronics. There's plenty to excite throughout, from the funk-fuelled tech-house swing of opener "Rdm37", and gently off-kilter bounce of "MPC13", to the pleasingly melodious, ear-catching closer "Zxy22".

Review: Sergio Moreira probably doesn't get enough sleep. Certainly, the sheer volume of tracks he releases suggests that he barely rests. Happily, the Spanish producer has the knack of consistently delivering strong EPs, as his latest outing for Slow Life deftly proves. He begins with the rising, stretched-out strings and bustling house rhythms of "The Truth", before fusing warm Rhodes chords, tech-jazz electronics and swinging broken beats on the impeccable "My Reality". Flip for "That Was Just A Dream", where toasty organ chords are underpinned by a bubbly tech-jazz groove, and the accompanying Indi Zone remix, which blasts the track into deep ambient space via glistening IDM.

  2. Mystical Sayings (10:24)
Review: Romanian producer Lizz is the latest guest star to light up the consistently on-point Easternderz label. A-side "Ions Move" is particularly potent, with cyclical melody loops and spacey electronics crowding around a stabbing acid bassline, crispy cymbals and chunky drums. Tension is cannily built thanks to the use of an extended breakdown midway through. While that has a slightly creepy, foreboding feel, flipside "Mystical Sayings" is a beacon of fluttering positivity. Its crystalline melodies are in perfect harmony with the producers dreamy chord progressions, bubby synth bassline, and crisp, rolling beats. It could well be the better of the two tracks, and they're both rather good.

  3. Boodoo (7:22)
  4. Talkin' Talkin' (3:22)
  5. Harry (2:15)
Review: The Vinyl Only label comes from Ant Plate (of Rhythm Plate notoriety), and following some turns from Ant himself as Yse Saint Laur'ant the label branches out to welcome brand new entity (or quite possibly alias) Bubbadog to the playing field. The quality of the music eschews any notions of who did what, as the tumbling Latin tones of "Alma" meet with the laid-back, handclap-heavy bliss of "Threshold". "Boodoo" on the flip deals in a more peppy kind of offbeat house, and then "Talkin' Talkin'" and "Harry" drop down into a classic bit of funk breaks business.

Review: The latest Ten Thousand Yen release is a vinyl only affair from label founder Doc Daneeka that has summer on its mind and certainly sounds like it was a hoot to produce. Samples abound across the two tracks, with "Never Wanna Lose You" standing out for the manner in which Daneeka gleefully toys around with classic breakbeats and freestyle vocal hooks, squeezing in plenty of loops and filters along the way. One for the drunken, messy moments deep into a night in a basement. On the flip "Got Me" is as good a slice of disco-infused house music as you'd expect from a Soundstream record. Great fun.

  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: Unknown To The Unknown spreads its wings with a new sublabel dedicated specifically to jacking house jams for proper white-knuckle party times. Steven BC turns the acid intensity up to 11 with the devastatingly on-point "Flanger Zone", while Mall Grab reaches for a classic bit of disco funk to sample and filter mercilessly. Lawrence Lee meanwhile opts for a playful, budget take on Eastern electro on "Pyongyang Rhythm" before Jeremy Castillo and Vin Sol return to primal Trax Records territory for "Beat Dat". It's a release that marks House Crimes out as a natural descendant from UTTU's irreverent approach to dance music, without compromising on the quality.

Review: Och has been a regular fixture on Baby Ford's Trelik label in recent years, and he returns with the late night delights of the Love Unconditional EP sounding stronger than ever. "Sunday Love" is a warm and cosy bumper, keeping the keys bright and breezy while the beat skips away dutifully before the more heads down thrust of "More Journeys Into Swing". The real star of the show though is "Love Unconditional", a particularly gripping track that unfurls seductive synth licks and vocal licks across the whole B side on a one-way trip to nocturnal body jam perfection.

Review: It's amazing to think that Jay Daniel is still only 25. Since making his debut five years ago, the producer has been responsible for some of the finest house music to emerge from Detroit in recent times. Interestingly, he's slightly modified his woozy and gently soul-flecked blueprint on this hotly anticipated debut album. For starters, many of the tracks - standouts "Paradise Valley" and "Knowledge of Selfie" included - feature live drums, played and recorded in his mother's basement. This rhythmic adjustment gives Broken Knowz a far looser and warmer feel than his previous work, in the process elevating his deliciously rich and musical deep house to a whole new level. In other words, it's an impressively assured and entertaining debut album.

Review: Tomoki Tamura's Holic Trax label has been nurturing Tuccillo among its many regular artists over the years, and now the Italian wonderkid returns with another distinctive run of jams from the wild side of deep house. There's a psychedelic quality to the rich textures that vibrate throughout "G-Capsule", while "Pierrot" keeps things lean and limber with some minimal percussion and a cheeky bassline that will work wonders in the mix. "Playhead" takes old skool New York house into a modernist mindset, and then "Los Amigos" finishes off in a more sensual celebration of unconventional house music.

Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

Review: Only those with long memories will remember David 'Move D' Moufang's short-lived Housegrooves alias. It was only used for a single 1993 release, Volume 1, a 12" that has long been in-demand amongst deep house diggers. Misfit Melodies have decided to give it the reissue treatment, partnering two of the EP's most lauded cuts with fresh remixes and edits. In the former category you'll find the low-slung analogue bass, rolling beats and spacey synth melodies of "I Gave My Love", and the more bumpin', New Jersey influenced Seebase collaboration "Deep", which here gets a slight edit from DJ Oyster. The most impressive rework comes from Shan and Gerd Janson, who turn "I Gave My Love" into a saucer-eyed chunk of piano-heavy, rave-era breakbeat-house bliss.

Not content with pulling up trees under his given name, he's decided to debut a new alias via a killer new EP for Rhythm Section International. All four tracks are deliciously hazy, effortlessly soulful and hugely groovy, as Rakei deftly showcases his many talents. He begins with the Prince-tinged purple funk of "Change", before fusing clipped funk guitars, broken house beats and confident vocals on the superb "Like You Wanna". "Tolle" sees him slip further towards toasty, low-slung deep house territory, before he breaks up the beats and fires up the Rhodes on deliciously jazzy closer "Ligo".

In an attempt to make up for lost time, boss Jeremy Underground has gathered together seven fresh tracks, and stretched them across two weighty slabs of wax. As usual, the featured deep house cuts tend towards the classic and U.S-inspired, variously doffing a cap to New Jersey, New York and Chicago, via ear-pleasing organ riffs (see DJ Steaw's excellent "East Orange"), soulful vocal snippets (Teflon Dons), clear boompty influences (Tristan Da Cunha's Salt 'n' Pepa-sampling "Hit Up On This"), and breezy disco (Ebony Cuts). Franck Roger's contribution, "For Me", is also one of his sleaziest, basement-friendly tracks to date.

This 1989 classic by DFX aka Italian legends Felix Imevbore and Claudio Donato features the vocals by Dr. FeelX. On the A-side, the Masters at Work man joins forces with Hajime Yoshizawa to deliver a largely instrumental, Afrobeat inspired take full of layered hand-held percussion, undulating grooves, and the latter producer's killer organ solos. On the flip, Blaze's Josh Milan provides a honeyed, effortlessly soulful interpretation that places Anane Vega's delicious vocals at the heart of proceedings. Review: From Hudd Trax and Dessous through to One and Karat, Parisian producer Andrade has graced many a fine label in his time. He lands on Politics Of Dancing in fine fettle, jumping to the task with A-side cut "The Bridge" like he's got something to prove. The beat is irrefutable, while the soulful chords and samples rubbed into the joints make it all the sweeter. "Control" on the B-side is an airy affair that floats on plush layers of melody without losing its low-end impact. By way of variation, the remixes from Dan Ghenacia and Art Alfie simmer Andrade's originals down into measured, tool-like constructions.

This time Elmo Crumb is is moniker, and the sounds are as a sparse and explorative as ever; the arrangement of the nine-minute bomb "I'm Still Dizzy" is deep and intricate, filled with spectral sounds that are constructed with a clean analogue sound that sounds almost organic in texture. "I Am A Canary Bird" is similarly loose, except that the beat is more driving here, wrapped in a noticeably more techno-like coating that is bound to make the perfect companion to all sorts of rave frivolities. Review: In the space of a year Bahnsteig 23 has positioned itself as a label of note with a strong run of 12"s that draw on a rich spread of influences from cosmic disco to world music to provide a little more spice in your dancefloor selections. Portland's Elliot Thomas takes his Etbonz alias out for its first proper outing here after a split 7" with Dro Carey some years back. This single-sided jam serves to raise the intrigue around the project further still with its dense, organically enhanced production and dreamy atmosphere, keeping the tempo slow and simmering for the early part of the party.

Review: After five years spent building his reputation via superb, in-demand 12" singles, Stefan "ST" Wust has finally got round to delivering his debut album. Made up entirely of untitled tracks, the set shimmies between sounds and styles at will, showcasing his deep-held love for numerous styles of electronic music. It variously touches on watery ambience, classic IDM, blustery percussion workouts, dubbed-out mood-scapes, Detroit-influenced club cuts, freaky Afro-acid, low-slung deep house, intelligent techno, jungle-influenced smashers, and sparkling, beat-less futurism. In other words, it's exactly the kind of eclectic - but on-point - album we'd expect, only five or six times better than we'd hoped for. Yes, it really is that good.

Review: Having delivered a stand out pair of EPs to Untilmyheartstops last year and moonlighted on Greta Cottage Workshop, Freerotation alumni Duckett lands on the ever adventurous Galdoors with a spellbinding collection of compositions that seek to send delicate synthesiser sequences into romantic, cosmic pastures. "No Relation To Me" shimmers with intricate layers of melody while "My Other Life On Earth Begins This Morning" works around off-kilter rhythmic configurations to create a hypnotic workout. The subtlety carries through to the B-side, where "Everything Works Backwards" pulls at the heartstrings before "But My Mind" settles into a woozy, uneasy funk.

Review: The Iceland-born, Norway-based producer, B. G. Baarregaard, channels the great tradition of Scandinavian electronic disco on this delectable four-tracker, maintaining a crisp and funky edge to his productions while making sure every inch of the wax is dripping with old-skool warmth. "Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Review: Burnski and Jon Woodall's Constant Sound label continues to reach skywards following the formers essential DNA album, welcoming the ever-reliable Laura Jones and Stephen Brown into the mix with a collaborative effort that matches club precision with machine soul in equal measure. "Crystalline" works around Detroit motifs to great effect, while "Concave" ramps up the swing factor for a spacey number that gets fancy with the FX. "PV" too does a fine job of making the synths ping around the mix with a jammed-out feel, while Endian delivers a remix of "Nothing Lost" that leans on Berlin techno dynamics while injecting some colour into the situation.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: Commonly found steering his own Nabuco label, Noha slides over to Constant Black (Sub label of Constant Sound) to round out a very productive 2016 with another round of on-point deep house cuts sprinkled with immersive techy leanings. "Hamal" may have a stout rhythm section at its core, but the layers of synths and processing on top all speak to a tripped out dubby mindstate, while "Palette" only reaches further out into wistful 4/4 territory. There's still a crucial clubby mentality powering this EP though, and the reduced hypnotism of "Annabanana" taps into this perfectly before the live drum workout "Discovery". Vinyl only release

  1. Breakplus - "Le Train Enflamme" (7:56)
  2. Mr Beatnick - "Achilles Heel" (5:30)
Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.

Review: Due for release in January, Dance 2017 will be Secretsundaze Music's first ever compilation. This first sampler 12" gives a taste of what's to come, showcasing three killer cuts destined for the CD and download versions. Fred P kicks things off, successfully combining a chunky, dexterous drum track with canny manipulation of one of deep house music's most iconic string samples (yep, the very same one Pepe Bradock used on "Deep Burnt" all those years ago). Flip for a dose of bumpin', drum-led deep house magic from the always on-point Nubian Mindz ("Testing Theories"), and a deliciously deep, acid-flecked collaboration between Secretsundaze co-founder James Priestley, and regular studio pal Marco Antonio Spaventi.

Review: It's early days for DJ Loser, having just been snapped up for a split cassette release with Raw Ambassador in the recent past. Luckily, getting a spot on London's well-established Bliq label is a fine place to start, and the debutant producer turns out some confidently grubby house wares for their first spot on vinyl. "Your Eyes Were Telling Me That You Really Cared" is a woozy, infectious club track full of scuffed drum machines and low-rent synth flares, while "Untitled" has a much more abrasive palette on offer. "I've Got Dis (But I Can't Do It)" hits a similar vein of atmospheric jackery before Bliq regular Seixlack turns out a more densely packed remix.

Review: Algorythmic is a vinyl only imprint owned by Romanian duo Dubsons; regulars on Moscow's Body Parts Records who are back with a superb cast of various artists for their operation's second release. On the A side, we've got local up and comer Rojid with the reduced tribalism of "Kaze" that's reminiscent of Zefzeed or Lizz, then there's Idana with the deeply hypnotic trip that is "Kage". On the flip, we have more reduced trance induction in the form of Dubson's themselves; who offer up the smooth nu-acid journey of "Vento" (which is just perfect for an afterhours session at Bucharest's infamous Club Guesthouse) and likewise with RQZ's "M Games" where the Cluj-Napoca native throws down a bleepy, blurpy and downright trippy roller that no doubt takes its cues from Villalobos.

Review: Jesse Futerman's first appearance for Church feels like it was always meant to happen and, in fact, it's as if this artist has always been part of the London label. That's because his rugged house flex is exactly the sort of material that these guys have been pushing over the last few years, and "My Favourite Chant" provides the perfect analog house trip. "See Me Ride", however, is a slower, more placid sort of groove that allows more space for the myriad of gentle melodies emanating from every corner, but the flip-side's "Gem" heads back to the dance floor with utter ease, and makes for the perfect opening set track; Hidden Spheres provides the remix, a subtle modification of the original which focusses heavily on the tribal drums. A wonderful new Church bomb...

Review: London's irrepressible Lobster Theremin label launches its new offshoot, Distant Hawaii, with Moods & Grooves signee Hidden Spheres. The mood is summery and the vibes are housey; "Waiting" kicks things into motion with a pseudo tribal beat and some lovely deep house action, while "Upsn Downs" goes a little off-kilter thanks to its rattling percussion samples and sporadic beat. On the flip, "Be A Man" enters the Detroit house territories thanks to its gorgeous pads and lo-fi vocal samples, and "Bill Loves You" chuck groovy jazz instrumentation over a slick groove. Noice!

Review: More commonly found lurking around on Ornate and People Are Looking At You, Jonno & Tommo make the leap to Baby Ford's legendary Trelik label with a diverse range of club tracks that highlight their flexibility in the dance. "Love Songs" may be packing a punchy rhythm section, but the dusty vocal sample injects a haunting soul into the framework of the track. "Bloc via Bow" meanwhile keeps things sprightly and notably tech-minded with its catchy lead chord stabs, before "Running Hammock" heads down into a mysterious, jazz-tinted abstraction of deep house, neatly rounding out a strong EP.

Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

  1. Keep It Lit (8:17)

Review: Baba Stiltz isn't exactly the first name you'd associate to Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes, but the reality is that the producer's shady strain of deep house works perfectly well with the incorrigibly leftfield label. Moreover, Bankhead has never been one to shy away from anything that he likes, so it would be unfair to limit this incredible imprint to techno or noise. "Keep It Lit" kicks off with a warm, gloriously funky little house groove that reminds us of DJ Nature or even Kyle Hall's early productions whereas, on the flip, "BB 1-2" edges closer to typical TTT territories thanks to its deranged vocal samples and broken arrangement. "We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play" is similarly twisted, and verging towards just the right kind of dark and eerie. This is a fine, three-piece house EP with a hint of TTT's inimitable oddity. 5 stars.
