July V/Shoulders Back (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: TIO S1. Rel: 13 Feb 17
  1. July V (6:26)
  2. Shoulders Back (6:52)
Review: Starting a solo venture alongside his work running the UntilMyHeartStops label, Leif kicks off the new 10" Tio Series with two stunning tracks that once again demonstrate his unstoppable progression in the field of broken beats. "July V" is a true head-spinner, using dazzling arpeggios and fractious drums to create a wondrous crystalline slice of leftfield rhythm science. "Shoulders Back" on the flip is a completely different concern, but no less astounding in its use of cyclical, percussive melodies to create a hypnotic, and truly distinctive workout. At a time when more and more producers are moving away from traditional 4/4 rhythms, Leif's particular style is as natural and inspiring as it gets.

  3. Kaffe Creme - "Baciami Subito" (6:55)
  4. Marc Bianco - "Jaco P" (5:46)
Review: Folamour's brand new label is For Heaven Use Only... But don't worry - we won't tell him if you play them at any dancefloor in the real world. The Moonrise Hill hero takes the lead with a lush brushed drum tropical boogie cut that's all light in the synths and woozy in the horns while Lo Life sedates us to the very soul with the lush and loopy "Gucci Tennis 84". Wrapping up the second side we have a Carter-level boompty tub-thumper "Baciami Subito" from Kaffe Creme and an energised jazz techno jam from Marc Bianco that features the slipperiest fretless bass runs this side of Azymuth HQ.

  1. Fantasy (5:19)
  2. Late Night People (5:28)
  3. MRDJ (5:35)
Review: Sounds Of The City continues to fly the flag for soul enhanced house music from unsung heroes as Javonntte joins the fray with some absolutely un-missable grooves. "Fantasy" seems to capture some of the heated romance of the Cassio Ware classic but reworks it into a fresh, bumping concoction of the highest order. "Late Night People" meanwhile heads into slinkier territory with its killer chord flourishes and tightly wound beat, and then "MRDJ" turns the heat back up with a powerful lead hook purpose-built to get hands held aloft. This is the best kind of upfront house music, oozing soul and sophistication while keeping things utterly funky at all times.

Cat: DINER 002RE. Rel: 20 Feb 17
  1. Stay (8:09)
  2. Venus Requiem (5:57)
Review: **REPRESS ALERT** Chicago's The Nite Owl Diner originally released "Stay" by local heroine The Black Madonna back in 2014 to much fanfare. A wonderful edit geared for some life affirming moments on late night dancefloors that was no doubt honed by the artist's (known to her Dad as Marea Stamper) skills behind the decks for several years at Windy City institution Smart Bar. On the flip there's the even funkier and discofied "Venus Requiem" full of neon-lit synths and cracking Linn drums; there's an odd familiarity throughout as it builds and builds.. and drops right at that moment to set the dancefloor alight again. It's just one of 'those' kind of tracks and here's your chance to snap up another copy of this remastered gem before it flies off the shelf again.

  4. Intr0beatz - "That DUB" (feat Lay-Far - Tape mix) (5:45)
  5. Kid Sublime - "Wings Of Love" (feat Han Litz) (6:21)
Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Review: It's never easy keeping up with all the absolute gold that comes flying out of Seven Davis Jr's studio, but it makes it all the more fun playing catch up. Having kicked off his Secret Angels label last year with an EP and an album, he's already back with yet another long player spread across two discs and dripping with that irresistible, neo-soul enriched boogie. This is house music how it should be done, channelling the influence of P-funk, Prince and D'Angelo to make some of the sweetest party-starting material you're likely to hear all year. Review: Man of many labels Marcel Vogel turns out some of his most impressive material on Intimate Friends, bringing other talents into the fold to share in his vision of soul, funk, disco and house how it should be done. Having released the Human Beings album last year, Vogel invites a stellar cast to come and remix several tracks with predictably fantastic results. NY*AK enlists the honey-coated Rhodes skills of Mark Hand on their version of "Human Being", and it's an absolute joy to listen to. Meanwhile SoulPhiction gets into an equally heart-warming groove when he tackles "Always Isn't Only". Soul Clap meanwhile bring a little more party functionality to "Moonchild" before Simba offers up a very different, low-slung and laid back version.

Review: Unstoppable Aussie house maverick Mall Grab takes a deep splash with three more premium cuts. "Pool Party Music" is a loopy, jacking slab of raw fun. If it soundtracks any particular time of a pool party it's when everyone starts pushing each other it. Joyously buzzy. "BFODAAS" takes us back to the earlier chapter of the party where the vibe is warming up, drinks are sliding down and there's not a cloud in the sky. Finally the warm, rolling bleepy "Catching Feelings" catches the moment where you're wrapped in a fluffy towel and cuddled up with pool friends old and new. Bliss.

Review: Roving Romanians Khidja take us on a trip of a lifetime with "Impossible Holiday"... We take off with the stately, cavernous and slightly fuzzy "Die Wilde Spirale" and land in our improbable destination to the spiked out synth washes and dubby bass palpitations of "Pinnacles". We enjoy all sorts of unperceivable activities to the bouncy, analogue bed and fluttering, head-soothing arpeggios of "Haetrin" then fly home to our comparably dismal existences on the droning, groaning and ever-morphing "Kraftfield". Happy travels.

Review: Longstanding, long-game playing collective Lowmoneymusiclove invite Amsterdam freshman Planet JM into the fold with three delicious foundation homages. "Orionizer" is a sprightly light-keyed jacker with a mild sense of Guy Called Gerald to its aesthetic while "Redwood Root" flies due west for a restrained but knowing 7am Chi-town hoe-dow. Looking for a pinch more tech? Flip for the brilliant bleep-funk of "Atom 442" where strong parallels can be made to the shuffled soul of guys like Brett Johnson and Tyrant all those years ago.

Review: It's barely been a month since the last instalment in Yoyaku's YYY series landed in stores, but already the Parisian record store, DJ agency and studio has readied a new volume. As usual, there's scant info about artist or release - just the way I like it - so you'll have to draw your own conclusions. YYY323 doesn't try too hard for attention, presenting two groove-based DJ tools that should appeal to those who like their techno bass-heavy, percussive and hypnotic. A-side "Tool A" peppers an undulating rhythm track with fluttering electronics and bold, mind-altering bass, before things get rougher on the flip via the thrusting drum machine hits, pulsating sub-bass and subtle acid style electronics of "Tool B".

Review: Step up House Running, a label making its first steps with this release, welcoming some new talent into the fold and making a strong first impression in the process. Tell keeps things deep with the undulating warmth of "Floating Lands", while Meemo has a fractured soul mood hovering over "Therez". Baltra's "Paris La Nuit" is a more feisty affair with its gnarly, acid lead line but it's balanced out by a fun and funky disco flair, and then Kiani's Virunga rounds the record off with a lovely arpeggio-powered remix of Deced's "Sound Curiosity".

Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Review: As Yse Saint Laur'ant, Ant Plate (one half of ever productive duo Rhythm Plate) takes some time out from crafting refined deep house music to indulge his more wayward tendencies. Amongst the music coming to light in this intriguing diversion from a prolific artist is the fantastic "Just Because...", which comes on like early Wagon Christ material with a modern production sheen. "Space Is Defunct" meanwhile slaps down some chugging 80s flavoured grooves, "2106" reaches for the boogie and "Don't Make Me Think" channels a laid back Balearic mindset. It's a mixed bag of a record, make no mistake. That's also what makes it marvelous.

Review: Pictu doesn't put out Unanim releases anywhere near as much as we'd like. But when he does, we all need to pay attention. After almost two years since Herodot's release Dutch deepsmith Ludwig jumps on board with two dense but sparse grooves that instantly suck you in. His sound fits the label instantly: "Mania GR" pops and jerks with a classic jacking, bubbling funk while "Wishkey In An Icejar" is drenched in total sub pressure as the drums are smothered with layers of low end frequencies and a tripped out spoken narrative. Let's hope both parties don't it leave us hanging too long.

Review: Following a recent dalliance with Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape Reserve, COEO returns to the loving arms of Toy Tonics with another solid four-track excursion. Happily, they hit the ground running with the rushing positivity of "Mydonna", a bumpin' chunk of peak-time house goodness built around some superb disco samples and a bustling groove. The accompanying, "alternate cut" smartly emphasizes some of the original instrumentation, whilst adding some subtle swing to the disco-house drums. On the flip, you'll find the deep, smooth and sensual "Torrow", and the breezy, atmospheric, piano-laden shuffle of "Coast To Coast".

Review: It's been a while since the Albion stable graced our platters, but they're back in style with more of that on-point house music voodoo for the heat of the night. This single is a vessel for the various sides of Tommi Vicari Jr, who rolls out his Czevski alias to deliver a bruising remix of "57 Hertz" by 76-79. It's a reverb-soaked, dubbed out affair with a rock solid rhythm section and plenty of trippy FX tweaking on top. On the flip it's a different story with a similar feeling as we get the straight up Tommi Vicari Jr material in the shape of two killer tracks crafted for transcendental moments of dancefloor hypnosis.

Review: Cuisine Dub first charmed out ears with a release on the ever-excellent Udacha label, but now the Croatian producer has been picked up by Sound Reflection for an EP of sumptuous experimental delights somewhere on the fringes of world music influenced deep house. "Benvenuti" is a playful beatless opener before the twinkling delights of "Teraca" take hold with a steady rhythm section powering the delicate melodies. "Laguna" lets some lingering piano notes drift into the patter of bongos and congas, and then "Lumbrak" strips everything back without losing that hand-played organic feeling. "Galeb" finishes the record off with yet more blissful keys and loping rhythms that radiate that good time Adriatic feeling.

Review: The Rhythm Plate posse are certainly no strangers to Hudd Traxx, and so it makes perfect sense to see their Goshawk project landing on the long-serving Northern deep house label. The vibes are impeccable on this 12" from start to finish, not least with the soulful sway of "My Heart" bolstered by Astral T's vocals. "High In The Evergreens" meanwhile takes a woozy approach to straight up house music with its dreamy synth tones, and "Yes In This Way" turns up the pressure with a killer bassline and feverish gospel preacher vocal hooks. "My Business Ain't Your Business" takes a more laid back, choppy approach to the groove without losing any of that all important soul.

Review: Under the now familiar Spacetravel alias, Luca Cara has released some fine music over the last couple of years, most notably a fine debut album for Perlon. Here he pops up on Japan's Cabaret imprint with a four-track EP that largely looks to Detroit for inspiration. The sci-fi inspired futurism of the Motor City can be clearly heard in the darting synth lines, fizzing cymbal programming and undulating bass of opener "Axion", before "Change Planet Stacion" adds a little acid-fuelled Chicago jack to the late '80s Transmat template. "Spirit" is darker and creepier in tone, while "Ankor What" successfully fixes vintage techno percussion and synths to a rich, deep house style bassline and chords.

Review: Lecce's finest Massimiliano Pagliara now calls Berlin home, where he's a resident at local institution Panorama Bar and at Offenbach's Robert Johnson as well. Quite fitting then that in-house label Ostgut Ton takes the honour of releasing his new EP Time & Again, where his irresistible nu-disco jams take on an even stronger form yet. "If I Try To Forget I Will Miss You Even More" channels the energy of a typical Sunday night up at the infamous Berghain loft, as does the title track with its razor sharp, neon lit analogue synths soaring gloriously above the mix in classic Italo disco fashion. On the flip is the emotive, soulful and Detroit influenced "To A Faraway Place" with its euphoric elements reminiscent of Virginia's contribution for the label last year. Finally, "A Passing Day" is the moodiest offering here; the slow burning number features a gritty EBM style arpeggio and industrial percussion strikes, creating quite the suspense.

Review: Dutch label SlapFunk finally return to their ever-essential Raw Joints series for the first time in over a year, and this time the project has expanded to a monster-sized triple pack of intriguing club variations. Amongst the different delights to be found tucked away on Raw Joints #5 are the meditative garage tones of Lopaski, the urgent minimal house of Pascal Benjamin, the chopped up breakbeat funk of Pete Bandit & Wouter S and the trippy techno of Nick Beringer. With 14 tracks that all stand proud on their own, this is an essential purchase for anyone wanting some head-tweaking, off-kilter house and techno jams.

Review: Following the excellent instalment from DJ Skull, Mentha continues to gather pace as a house and techno label of note with this sublime offering from Hakim Murphy. While the Chicago native may be known for some bruising hardware house and techno a lot of the time, he's showing his more sensitive side on this release with delicate tracks that head into deep techno waters. The title of the EP says it all, as nimble, expressive beats merge with soothing, aqueous pad tones for a most satisfying of listening experiences. Fans of early deep techno a la B12 and Stasis will find much to enjoy here.

Review: Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson continues to celebrate notching up two decades in deep house, this time via an expanded reissue of his largely overlooked 1999 debut album, That Something. The album originally appeared on DIY Discs offshoot DIYersions, and saw Iveson combining his love of tactile, atmospheric deep house with jazzy keys, and the kind of sublime synthesizer sounds he later explored more extensively on 2001 full-length Labfunk. This reissue contains two discs of obscure and previously unheard bonus material. CD2 contains unreleased archive material recorded between 1995 and '98 - including some especially good downtempo gear - while CD3 features alternative versions, bonus cuts from 12" singles, and a smattering of tasty remixes. That it all still sounds fantastic is testament to Iveson's impeccable production skills.

  4. Ah Que Legal (Jeen Bassa remix) (3:42)
Review: Joe Davis' Far Out Recordings is indeed an endless source of good music and outernational slickness. The British digging veteran has given us an insurmountable amount of pearls over the years but, specifically, he's opened a whole Pandora's Box of Brazilian music; word on the street is that he was the man who sold Gilles Peterson his first, now rare-as-hens-teeth, Brazilian 12s and LPs back in the 90s. His latest 12" features Azymuth drummer Ivan Conti, remixed and reinterpreted in the finest of UK flavours and, more specifically, form a selection of artists whom we rarely see these days. Broken beat pioneer IG Culture rewires "Mamao's Brake" in the most poignant of fashions, tearing up that percussion and letting it run wild amid scores of trippy synths, while 22a's Tenderlonious gives the tune a funky albeit minimalistic sort of flavor. "Ah Que Legal", on the flip, is first retouched by Reginald Omas Mamode IV, who turns in a beautifully stripped-back, lo-fi waver, and then by Jeen Bassa who goes for the hazy, boogie sort of flex. This is very warmly recommended. 5 stars.

  4. Satore - "Keep On" (5:31)
Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Review: After recent outings on Local Talk and Z Records, Ben 'Crackazat' Worrall begins 2017 with an outing on new imprint Eureka. A-side "Coffee Time" is typical of his jazzy, undulating, mixed-up house sound, with darting, layered vocal samples and snaking sax lines riding a killer jazz-funk bassline and dexterous rhythm track. B-side "Seven Steps" takes a more traditional approach to jazz-house, with Worrall working a killer groove created by fusing cut-up jazz loops and bouncy new drums. It's like a more forthright 21st century version of Boulevard-era St Germain, but with a little more UK garage influence in the bottom end.

Review: Over the last 18 months, Kiwi siblings Chaos In The CBD have become one of the most sought-after talents in deep house - thanks, in no small part, to fine release for such hyped labels as Church and Rhythm Section International. Here they present their second 12" on Japan's mighty Mule Musiq. It's a typically confident and ear-pleasing affair, with opener "Garden of Terrors" showing their skill in mixing enveloping chords and sticky aural textures with dense, African-influenced tribal drums. This growing passion for loose, layered organic percussion is also evident on the humid "Asmat", while closer "Subterranean Storm" sees them back in dreamy, jazz-flecked deep house mode. Like their other tracks in this style, it's something of a slow-burning dancefloor delight.

Review: It's been a quiet year for Kai Alce, but finally the Atlanta house hero returns with a new pair of tracks that will surely satisfy any fans of his instinctive, expressive take on club-ready deep house. This latest drop comes on Sounds Of The City, which has also supported the likes of Walt J and Brian Harden. "Just Wanna" is a sure and steady workout peppered with woozy chords and a nagging vocal lick, but "Movin Thru" is surely the record's stand-out moment. With just the right balance between the edgy chords and the rounded bassline, it's a simple cocktail that plays to Alce's strengths perfectly.

  4. Back Of The Yards (6:54)
Review: A quick glance at the list of DJs who have charted this release should tell you that it's a pretty significant release. It's David Rendle's first release in four years under the System Status alias, and contains four cuts rich in tapped-out, MPC style beats, jammed-out keys, and the kind of meandering, high-register synthesizer solos that were once a feature of vintage boogie productions. Rendle successfully doffs a cap to rich and jazzy deep house, whilst retaining a modern boogie feel throughout. It's probably the fluidity and expansive musicality that's caught the attention of so many DJs, though the analogue-rich beauty of tracks like "Back of the Yards" and "Janice" may also have something to do with it.

Review: Otherworldly sounds: longstanding Moscow machine musician Anton Zap returns with three deep-furrowed cuts that stand so alone they don't need titles... "Track 1" is a hypnotic drum track with a ricochet funk pinging back and forth across the spectrum, "Track 2" is a much denser piece of work with tripped-out textures and FX delicately layered to reveal a morphing, shifting, slightly unnerving technoid picture while "Track 3" closes with a calming acid tonic washed back with deep faltering pads a warm beat that shuffles from here to ULAS J0015+01. Far out.

Review: Always a prolific force operating on his own terms, Stephen Laubner makes his first appearance of 2017 with a release on the ever-growing Untold Stories label. Renbual Nahpets finds Laubner in a dubby frame of mind, especially on lead track "Sunny Park Chill" which sports some of his trademark grainy techno chords lingering in space surrounded by field recordings and subtle ripples of rhythm. "The Mountain Dub" meanwhile whips up a taut, rugged house groove with shimmering delays on the synth tones that only STL could be responsible for. Cleymoore uses the B side to lay out a remix of the latter track, turning it into a long and winding minimal track thick with detail.

Review: Longstanding Detroit deep house veteran Big Daddy Rick returns with three timeless reminders of his relevancy and resonance. "Escapism" is one of those classic ebb and flow tracks that laps gently but powerfully with mournful chords and slight air of cinematica while "Stand Alone" carries all the hallmarks of Rick's hometown with its rippled detuned chords and robust stately drum arrangement. "Understand" plays the consummate finale with its shuffled broken beats and dreamy 50s movie flourishes. Understated.

Review: Aside from a slurry of EPs for important house and techno labels like Rekids Area Remote, Canada's Nathan Barato has become a fundamental member of Jamie Jone's Hot Creations crew, and that in itself is a sign of respect. The present Freak Beater is the man's fourth EP for the label, and "Stomp Change" kicks things into motion with an instantly penetrative, deeply engrossing groove that sits somewhere between tech-house and high-speed electro-juke; the tune is one to bang out at peak time, that's for sure. "Freaks Of The Industry" is no less abrasive and floor-proof, except that the groove is a lot more fluid, leaving more space for the percussion to mould around the track's freaky bass ensemble. Another pair of HC party starters...
