  2. Marcel Vogel - "I Got Jesus" (6:34)
  3. Marcel Vogel - "I Got Jesus" (Karizma Stomp dub) (7:47)
Review: Lumberjacks In Hell just keep on trucking, this time calling upon the legendary skills of Karizma in setting their latest A side alight. "Work It Out" is a fiery slice of gospel choppery, whipping up a fevered line in vocal insistence that hardly needs a rhythm section to make you move, but still has the necessary goods underneath the hood. Marcel Vogel follows a similar tact on "I Got Jesus", spacing the jam out and working a bit more groove, but certainly tapping into the same spiritually enhanced vein. Karizma then returns to make an aptly named "Stomp Dub" of the track, rounding off an absolute beast of a party record.

  2. DSP (Dear Sweet Potato) (3:07)
Review: Given the clear West London broken beat and hazy jazz-funk influences that marked out his superb 2015 album From Joy, it's perhaps unsurprising that Kyle Hall's latest seven-inch missive explores similar sonic territory. While the standout is arguably the impeccable downtempo shuffler "DSP (Dear Sweet Potato)" - all gently tumbling synth lines, stoned drum machine hits (in a slipped jazz time signature, of course) and sun-kissed chord progressions - it's undoubtedly A-side "Teacher Plant" that will get all the props. Shot through with the fireside warmth and groovy vibes of deep house, but built around dexterous broken beats and Kaidi Tatham style keys-work, it's one of the producer's most well-rounded and effective releases of recent times.

Review: Since going solo last year, former Onra collaborator Byron Blaylock has yet to put a foot wrong. Each successive 12" has brought with it a swathe of killer new jams straddling the blurred lines between soul, jazz, hip-hop, deep house and jazz-funk. There's more of the same on Leaving This Planet, the Alabama-raised producer's first EP for the mighty Eglo. So while opener "Song for a Friend" is a superior, jazz-flecked deep house bumper smothered in killer electric piano solos, the track that follows, "Mind, Body & Soul" is a squelchy tech-jazz masterpiece. It's the same story on the flip, as floor-friendly jazz-breaks ("Blow Your Mind") make way for a heady trip into intergalactic jazz-funk territory ("SSDP"). As the worn-out old saying goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Review: The ever-prolific Steve O'Sullivan unveils yet another of his collaborations, this time pairing up with Frazer Campbell for three trips into the deepest furrows of the house and techno continuum. "Hypnotonic" needs little explanation beyond the title as it snakes its way through crisp, intricate beats and meditative pads, while "Soultonic" plies a similar trade with a more overtly melancholic mood lingering overhead. "Alleyway Funk" by way of contrast brings some housier elements to the foreground, most notably that warm and punchy bassline to get all manner of asses wiggling with approval.

Review: Leigh Darlow and Matthew Bandy have got plenty of experience in the world of deep house, both individually and as Saison. Building on a solid run of releases for Papa Records, the project makes its vinyl debut on Guesthouse with some undeniably catchy jams for the peak of the night. "Please Don't Go" is a cool slice of party fodder that hinges on a classic soul vocal hit, while "Do You" gets a little more choppy in the mix with yet more recognisable licks that should get the masses sweating and swaying without needing to resort to a hectic tempo. "The Moody Blues" lets the keys do the talking, while yet another of the hefty grooves Saison craft so well rolls out underneath.

Review: Fresh from his impeccable Fabric mix, in which he lays down nothing but his own creations, Dan Snaith finally unleashes some of the mix's many highs for our own mixing pleasure. "Face To Face" has been anticipated for a while thanks to its sultry stripped-back loose-stringed groove and late-entering vocal, "Tin" sees Dan incorporating the same rising, crisp euphoria you find in his Caribou work as synths flutter over a chugging late 90s style house beat while "Xing Tian" shuffles and twists with a little more fuzz and unpredictability. Classic Daphni.

Review: Brazilian label Gop Tun hits its fourth release with the sublime tones of TYV, building on the adventurous twist on disco and house music that has typified the label to date. Lead track "Miau!" is a show stopper that rides on a sumptuous arpeggio and lashings of Latin percussion, infected with a sunny disposition but also reaching into a more mysterious corner of the dancefloor. Lauer steps up to remix the original into a more overtly cheery version loaded with his trademark warm basslines and pads, but then TYV takes control once more for simmering B-side jam "Da Terra". Pitched at a more reflective time in the party, this brooding jam celebrates Brazilian music culture in a wonderfully modern context.

Review: The undisputed dons of minimal house team up here on Thomas Melchior's Aspect Music, for a very special release. Label boss Melchior's basic trance induction is complimented by Japanese maestro Fumiya Tanaka's reductionist mini funk on "Lost In Time". If that was not enough, they are joined by the man that started the whole style: Detroit innovator Daniel Bell. The Accelerate head honcho venturing into the studio for the first time in many years, which makes this that bit more extraordinary. On the flip, Melchior and Tanaka carry on the show (As Tofu Productions) with the darkly hypnotic loops of "The Warmth" which is perfect for Sunday morning weirdness at Club Der Visionaere.

Review: Since announcing their debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune earlier this year, Irish duo Bicep present the first single from the album in the form of title track "Aura". Said to have been created via a series of accidents while experimenting with a new studio setup, the track finally came together through trial and error and here is the wonderful result. A dark and sexy serving of dancefloor drama featuring 'hands in the air' style vintage synth melodies, life affirming strings and immaculate drum programming. It is sure to be one of 'those' tracks you're going to be hearing a lot of in the latter part of 2017 and beyond.

Review: Belgian producer Krewcial is one of those producers who flits in and out of activity, and has done so since the mid 90s. Lumberjacks In Hell have called upon this slippery character to lay down some righteous grooves for their latest missive, and the results are sublime. "2U" is funky house how it should be done, all stomping drums, dreamy pads and soulful licks for the party people in the place. "Heal" takes a more edited approach, holding back the bass for the ultimate dancefloor payoff. "Hit Me Off" ramps up the jazzy keys for a Detroit flavoured looped up throwdown, and then "The Session" fires off one last sumptuous rip through peak time perfection.

Review: Not long after laying down some serious jazzy tones from Hanna, Perpetual Rhythms stays true to its cause by delivering this debut release from the equally appropriately named Mystical Institute. There's very little in the way of information out there about this new operator, but based on the quality of the music contained within the Shared Growth EP we should be hearing plenty more from them in the future. "Sea Believer" is a lilting dubby house number which undulates into the skippy seduction of "Night Rhythms". On the B side "Minds Rising" takes a meditative approach into subtle, snaking patterns of percussion and melody, and "Shared Growth" brings a more urgent energy without losing that spooky atmosphere that lingers throughout this record.

The first side of this 12" finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. "Would" locks into a subtle swing and revels in lopsided synth stabs, while "Hedone" plunges into a stunning intricate techno landscape peppered with glitchy tones. Review: It's been a while since we heard any new material from Rick Poppa Howard, the father of prodigious house talent Tevo Howard. The soul and raw, off-kilter production style runs in the family, and "Keep Holdin On" demonstrates this perfectly with its immediate warmth and unfussy arrangement. "Gimme That Love" is the real gem on this record though, toying with a rubbery bassline and a touch more atmospheric detail that makes Howards voice shine. That said, if you do require an instrumental version for any reason, the alternative cut stands proud on its own. For our money though, we'd say Howard's vocals are what makes this record special.

Number 16 in the series offers a predictably classy affair in the form of 2 club trax that are bound to sync with pretty much anything you throw at them. "Space Cadet" is a direct, no bullshit house missile made for keeping the moods and tempos at a steady pace, while "Halfjack" is more on the playful side, shooting out tidy little melodic twists amid its rawer and more off-kilter percussion.

Review: Animals On Psychedelics snaps up a debut appearance from Miro Sundaymusiq for its second release, delving further into the label's mission statement of "the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music." Miro opens up proceedings with "This Is Not Butter Carolin", a twinkling roller with subtle disco undertones and a cheeky nod to electro rubbed into the rhythm. So far, so psychedelic. "Creamy Dreams" is no slouch in the cosmic department either, loaded with bubbling arpeggios aimed skywards and using a sprightly set of drums to help the mellifluous tones along.

"The Story Unfolds" leads the way with a set of slick and slender rhythms locked into a quintessential minimal house swing, with plenty of subtle micro sampling bubbling away between the beats. "VSHL" has a chunkier disposition, using bolder percussive strokes that punch in unison with the wobbly synth lines. "Perseid" is a trippy affair loaded with zippy effects and dubby effects, and then "H15" rounds the EP out with a resolutely deep 4/4 meditation.

For the second Canoe release Noface has been invited along to deliver the A-side track, and it's a killer slice of jazz-laced bumping house replete with sax and vibes. Review: It's not clear who is behind the Instinct label, but with this first release the mysterious producer displays an impressive grasp of dark garage and minimal house. The shuffling funk of "The Way" is an instant hit, marrying the razor sharp beats with melancholic synths and a killer bass wobble. "Pressure" deals in more abstract tones, but there's no let up in the nagging insistence of those crisp hi hats. "Cocktail" meanwhile takes a more uptempo approach with its bongo-embellished beat and subtle melodic fragments woven through the mix, and then "Instinct" knocks the ball out of the park with an utterly deadly 2-step workout for those who love Ghost Records and all that ace, moody pre-dubstep business.

Review: The latest volume in Rush Hour's Special Series focuses on the work of legendary - if under-appreciated - South African artist Senyaka Kekana, whose 1980s and early '90s output remains a firm favourite of open-minded crate-diggers. The EP brings together two tracks from impossible-to-find albums on 12" for the first time. On the A-side you'll find "Bayanyoyoba", a warm and rolling, chant-laden, mid-tempo deep house cut which originally featured on the artist's cassette-only 1993 set Ma-Gents. Arguably even better - and that's saying something - is flipside cut, "Don't Judge Me Bad", a 1987 soul cut that draws influence from boogie, AOR rock and jazz-funk. Both tracks are superb and well worth heavy rotation.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue continues its Dancefloor series apace with this choice reissue of an early deep house gem outside the usual thoroughfare of Chicago house history. Produced by Andrew Komis, "It's You" is a 1989 update of the ESP classic of the same name, and its various mixes have been cult favourites with all kinds of DJs for many years. The "New York - London Mix" is a stripped back slice of sensuality with a killer bassline and lean and mean drums behind the sultry vocal, whereas the "Free House Mix" takes a turn into bubbling electro and acid without losing that smouldering sassiness. The "NU Style Mix" is an added treat that places the emphasis on the drums, screaming out for some seriously creative mixing.

Review: Thanks to the recent success of founder member DJ Sports, Denmark's Regelbau collective is currently riding the crest of a wave. Here, fellow Regelbau stalwart DJ Central gets a chance to showcase his wares on the crew's in-house label. The first mix of "Drive" is a wonderfully woozy, spacey and laidback affair - despite the presence of skittish, house-tempo hardcore breakbeats - with Erica Casier's sweet vocals rising above Central's deep and hazy backing track. Casier's wonderful vocal is given even more prominence on the deliciously horizontal Ambient Mix. Flip the record over for the real standout highlight: a bubbly, punchy, breezy and bass-heavy Club Mix from DJ Sports that recasts the track as a slipped, two-step garage shuffler full of rich sub-bass and ear-pleasing organ stabs.

Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

Review: Neik's debut came only a few months back, when the minimal-minded producer stepped onto our charts with a quirky little 12" for the fledgling Fun Records. A quick follow-up to cement his name was essential, and that's exactly what he's gone and done with this new EP for the Vara label's fifth outing. "Hacia Ningun Lado" and "Dresdener Strasse" proudly dominate the A-side as if it were a shooting ground, pushing forwards with two solid, tech-minded grooves that spew cerebral harmonics from all corners. On the flip, TC80 has the entire span of the vinyl to offer his version of the latter, and the results are one mean minimal punch with a subtle taste of Chicago house funk. Solid.

Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

His ability to neatly sidestep Romanian tech-house cliches is much in evidence on A-side "Melorhythm", where poignant and melancholic flashes of melody weave in and out of a metallic, broken house groove. While the sound palette is reminiscent of his previous productions, it's the brilliantly off-kilter nature of the rhythm that's tickled our fancy. On the flip you'll find the meticulously programmed tech-house box jam that is "Synchronized" (which features some brilliantly perky Clavinet flashes) and the undulating deepness of "Fedrova".

  4. Octave & Dub Temptation - "Latenight Flip" (7:12)
Review: Minimal tech fiends, Bucharest Romania, are clearly proud of their country's passion and craft at making killer, off-the-wall dance beats with an edgy touch. This, once again, is a collaborative affair and it features some interesting new names form what feels like an ever-expanding unit of artists. Octave and Dub Tempation's "Audiotrip" perfectly encapsulates the sleek and beat-filled nature of these minimal beasts, while Bratias and Lulius' "Last Dance" strips it back to a moody nighttime flavor. All in all, we have good reason to say these are prime dancefloor bullets for the more tooled-up DJ.

Review: By the time he released debut album Bump Talkin' in 1995, Paul Johnson was already an established figure on the Chicago house scene. He'd already released all manner of bumpin', forthright fare on such legendary labels as Cajual, Dance Mania and Djax-Up Beats, leading UK label Peacefrog to offer him an album deal. While many of his early singles were undeniably slamming, Bump Talkin' was an altogether more musically rich affair, with Johnson offering up a selection of warm, rich, jazz-flecked deep house cuts that have stood the test of time superbly. This vinyl reissue - the first since the original album release - emphatically proves the timeless nature of the music. Relatively few copies are available so don't hang around if you want to snag one.

Review: Having previously plied his trade on Ibadan's tech-house flavoured Apotek offshoot (often in the company of Jerome Sydenham), Janne Tavi has finally been given his chance on the parent label. It comes courtesy of Robert Owens collaboration "The Other Man", a sumptuous chunk of classic house dripping in life-affirming piano solos, sweeping strings, driving drumbeats and sumptuous, soulful vocals. The headline remixes come courtesy of Kerri Chandler, who serves up vocal and instrumental versions seemingly inspired by Owens' work with Larry Heard as Fingers Inc (think analogue bass, rolling drum machine rhythms and sensual electronics). Tavi's own Vocal Dub - booming, bumping and stripped back - completes an essential package.

Review: For the label's first compilation, Cabaret Records has decided to introduce us to their Alien Family. By the sounds of the collection, they're a motley crew of studio mutants united by a love of creaking hardware, sci-fi synths and intergalactic dancefloor workouts. Happily, highlights are plentiful, from the acid-fired, bleep-heavy throb of S-Audio's "Remote Circuit" and weighty electro crackle of Binh's "Wova", to the dreamy underwater deepness of EK Box's "Watair" and the classic deep house/Detroit techno fusion of So Inagawa's futurist masterpiece "Solitary Affair". Evan Baggs's contribution, the TB-303 madness that is "AZS", is also superb.

Review: Disco Hamam's Hamam House launched in 2014 and they've left us hanging at a lonely taverna table ever since... Knowing the party would warm up once again. Three years later, it truly has an a largely Turkish collective lay down a supreme collection of eastern funk trips. Fattish's "Gel Seher" adds a little swaggering house beat beneath the soaring vocals and strings, Kozmonotosman gets mischievous with a loose-string twang jam while Kurt Adam enshroud us with a strangely percussed subverted lounge ballad. Tokyo Matt takes a final roll of the dice with a tropical finale laced with fretless bass finesse.

Review: The UK's favourite disco, boogie and house explorers Midnight Riot serve up another compilation entitled 'Le Spank' featuring a host of legendary producers from the scene, alongside some of the hottest rising stars from the underground. There really are some great jams on here: NYC act Odyssey receive brilliant extended edit by Glaswegian legend Al Kent on "Inside Out", a neon lit boogie down version of Tonbe's "Saturday" by London duo Yam Who? plus a deep down and dirty remake of the legendary Detroit anthem "Shari Vari" by Uomnamas: remixed by Hifi Sean and being the standout track on the B side.

Review: You'll struggle to find a more gorgeously summery cut than "Space Above Us", the opening cut from Marc Mac's latest EP under the Nu Era alias. The track's genius lies in its surging positivity, as bright synthesizer lines and rich, Motor City influenced chord progressions dance across a jazz-fuelled house groove. There's much smiling cheeriness to behold elsewhere across the EP, too, from the classic Detroit techno-goes-deep house bliss of "Lines Between Us", to the space funk-inspired broken house brightness of "Octahedron" and loose, string-drenched breakbeat workout "Heartstrings". In other words, it's another fine collection of musically rich dancefloor cuts from the reliable 4 Hero man.

Review: Take care out there, Roy Of The Ravers is back with another round of boisterous hardware hack-outs on Acid Waxa. You can tell he means business on opening track "Supremacy Royale", a fast and mean-tempered slice of bleepy techno with brains to match its brawn. "Ambergris 9" is a more playful jam with wonderfully dated melodic lines lifted from the pantheon of BBC library music, and then "Time 2 Jack" spins off into strange, abrasive realms of experimental acid. The epic "En Trance 10" wheels its way through more than 15 minutes on the B-side, employing trancey bassline strategies to keep your brain locked on course for the full trip.

  3. Out Of Time (instrumental) (9:44)
Review: Well, we're used to hearing Sasha on some progressive tip or, at least, bouncing around in the same space as labels like John Digweed's Bedrock, but here we have proof that the veteran producer is still out to diversify his sound and reach new audiences. The long-time DJ and producer steps up on Cologne's mythical Kompakt stable with "Out Of Time", a magnificently suave and laid-back house bombshell guided by the man's unmistakable prog-flex; this is the sort of gear you want to hear as you step into the dance and sip that first cocktail... a certified mood changer. On the flip we're graced with a few tenacious remixes; Patrice Baumel delivers an eight minute rework of the original, this time filtered through a much housier sort of guise that reminds us of the twilight hours on the Balearic islands' sandy beaches. Check the instrumental too - it'll be a useful DJ tool for sure.

Heading due south from NYC to New Jersey, we're presented with an absolute pearl from Kerri Chandler's extensive collection: "My Old Friend". Timeless chords set the scene with soulful stateliness while Kerri's classic strut maintains all the energy after 18 years. "We Can" and its reprise continue Chandler's soulful thrust with more focus on those classic Jersey organs. Flash Forward aren't messing around with these represses.

Review: Burnski's and Jon Woodall's Constant Sound sublabel Constant Black continues its march into the underbelly of heads down club tracks with this installment from the hitherto unfamiliar Constant. Whether it's Burnski under a different guise remains to be seen, but the quality of the tracks is the prime concern here. The A1 track is the perfect blend of tech house, with a hooky rhythm section and all manner of shimmering sonic delights spread out on top. The A2 taps a more reduced house vein, keeping the beats slender and the melodic elements subtle and dubby. The B side cut seems to merge the two to create a bubbling slice of swinging funk for the subliminal generation.

Review: Route 8 and S Olbricht are both highly regarded artists in their own right, but less light has been shed on their collaborative endeavours as Ste Pwri Tmod. Largely lurking around the Go! Finger label, this second instalment of Selected Works is taken from the album of the same name, giving a proper vinyl outing to some of the stunning tracks previously confined to cassette. "When I Pictured Myself" is a wonderfully laid back jam peppered with personality at every juncture, while "Horriflowers" takes a more uneasy trip into machine techno led by a growling synth. Things cool off considerably on the dubby "Nirrimi" and then "Strobes" rounds the record off with a brooding, wavey cut for dark, romantic dancers to lose themselves in.

Review: This man's output is anything but boring this year. Previously spotted on E-Beamz and Shall Not Fade he now joins the party at Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms. Once again it's straight to the floor jacking business with no care for unnecessary polish. "Different Dates" is pounding and acidic, "Lonely Valentine" chugs with a dreamier, swooning feel while "I Know You Want To" flexes some superb vocal sample artistry. Remix-wise Baltra adds a little acid silkier synths to the mix with sexy results. Say yeah.

Review: Dortmund producer Mr Fries was signed to Wolf Music after handing over a CD of demos at a gig. He subsequently made his first appearance on the established deep house label in February 2016. This belated follow-up is packed full of hazy, club-ready treats, from the sample-heavy deep house jazziness of "Justafan" and Moonrise Hill Material style dancefloor warmth of "Anotherbeer", to the jazz-funk influenced slickness of "Indarkdayz (feat Pete De Haan)", where snaking saxophone solos wrap themselves around a wonderfully tactile groove. Throw in a couple of head-nodding interludes (one of which is also turned into a chunk of glitchy deep house by Lab AKA Labat), and you have another essential EP from the talented German youngster.

  4. W4
Review: Thule are on an unstoppable roll at the moment, both mining the archive and doing a great service to the next generation of techno producers in Iceland. The deep, dubby headspace most readily associated with the label continues in abundance with the emergence of Waage, who under the tutelage of Thule old guard Exos has taken to production like a natural. There's a supremely reduced air about "W1", but the rubbery bassline simply can't be argued with. The dub techno tropes are out in full force on "W2" though, with some sumptuous chords that come on like cracking ice. "W3" then pushes even further out into that heady space where minor key chords can never have enough reverb before the sinister, simmering creep of "W4".
