Review: KMD's controversial Black Bastard album from 1994 draws on the stresses of going up as a person of colour in the United States of America. It is a sophomore record full of creativity and youthful energy from the group that included the legendary MF DOOM before he became MF DOOM. Musically the album veers from the raw to the bouncy while lyrically Black consciousness is explored as viewed through young-but-experienced eyes. The album was delayed in getting a release as group member Subroc sadly passed suddenly in 1993.

A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.

He dropped a trio of top albums that helped establish him as a golden era great, a pioneer of Mafioso rap and a legendary MC who was also part of Juice Crew with DJ Marley Marl, Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace and Roxanne Shante. He has been inducted into the National Hip Hop Museum in the US for his contribution to the genre and Last Of A Dying Breed is his first new solo album for some five years. He shows he still has what it takes to get the brain working as well as the body moving on this record, which is produced by Domingo and features guests like Royal Flush and Big Daddy Kane.

Review: Kool Keith has described his long-awaited sequel to solo career height Black Elvis as 'equal parts street and space', and that bears out in the music. It features the likes of Marc Live, Raaddrr Van, Dynamite, L'Orange, J. Stylez, Agallah and Ice-T and is Keith's attempt to re-elevate the rap art form he feels has too often been dumbed down. The beats are dark, the lyrical themes are just as shady but always real. Those features do a fine job of elevating the tunes rather than being for the sake of it, ensuring this will be as well received as the first installment.
