Review: Earlier this year, Palmbomen II joined forces with the previously unheralded Betonkust to deliver a cracking cassette of lo-fi IDM and leftfield house experiments on 1080p. Here the duo pairs up again to deliver their debut collaborative 12" on Pinkman. It explores similar sonic territory, with the six tracks variously touching on dark, soundtrack-style analogue ambience ("Donkerblauwe Auto's"), off-kilter acid ("N401"), vintage EBM (the thoroughly druggy motifs, creepy melodies and ricocheting percussion hits of "Suite 100"), blissful early 90s IDM ("Zwaluw"), and eccentric, electro-influenced house ("Boven De Wet"). Throughout, the Dutch twosome strikes a fine balance between dancefloor chops, and inspiring home listener fodder.

Review: The Bicep boys have really been pushing their Feel My Bicep label this year, putting out strong material at a furious rate. Their latest 12" comes from Eden Burns and Tomas Krammer's Sandboards project. While the duo recently contributed a track to an EP on Krystal Clear's Cold Tonic imprint, the Visa EP is their debut 12" proper. "Visa" is something of a gem, and peppers a snappy rhythm track with sun-bright melodies and synth lines reminiscent of Red Rackem's ubiquitous "Wonky Bassline Disco Banger". James Clarke dons the Shinra alias to deliver a superb remix that looks to electrofunk and classic IDM for inspiration, while flipside "Pink Slippz" sits somewhere between early trance, 1994 style intelligent techno, and mind-altering Italo-disco.

  6. Losing Control (5:20)
Review: Since 2011, Julien Mercier and Christophe Le Gall's Glass Figure project has been responsible for a number of impressive, but largely overlooked, digital-only singles. Nowhere marks their vinyl debut, and sees the duo serve up six suitably inspired, analogue electronic explorations. It's easy to spot their influences - "Arpegiozo" sounds like a lost John Carpenter composition, "Nowhere" is a near perfect electro/Italo-disco hybrid, and there's something undoubtedly Drexciyan about "Losing Control" - but their composition and production skills are such that they easily steer clear of hollow pastiche. The EP's more ambient-minded moments - and in particular short opener "Love Me" - are also sublime.

Novo Disko (hand-numbered heavyweight vinyl LP limited to 300 copies)
Cat: OR 16. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. Novo Disko (2006 original version) (5:16)
  2. Novo Disko (Alek Drive remix) (4:59)
Review: It's only natural that both The Hacker and HIV+ receive some attention on the excellent Oraculo Records, home to the very best in darkwave and all things post-everything. This particular tune, the fiery and tenebrous "Novo Disko", is actually from 2006, but it's one of those timeless tracks that cuts right to the core of industrial music; the glitchy, metallic beats, the distorted voices, and its general level of aggression are a perfect encapsulation of the genre. The remix from Alek Drive only does it more justice, thanks to its heavier techno pounce and magnificent extra injection of bass. This one's recommended!
