  3. Track 3 (5:10)
  4. Track 4 (4:27)
Review: Having taken the summer off - presumably to recharge their batteries - the robots behind Germany's Varvet label are back. For the label's third release they've enlisted debutants Disabled, a production duo comprising Stockholm's Cynthia Stern and veteran techno producer Tobias Schmidt (Tresor, Vivod, Don't etc.). There's a real "full throttle" feature to the untitled opener, whose fizzing electro synths seemingly buzz around a slamming techno groove. "Track 2" sees them reaching for surging analogue sub-bass, ghostly electronic melodies and jacking 4/4 beats, while "Track 3" is a panicked romp through angular electro pastures. Wisely, they allow listeners a bit of a breather in the shape of closer "Track 4", a far more becalmed chunk of ghostly, horror-influenced deep electro.

Slightly Ajar EP (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: EDREAMS 015. Rel: 25 Sep 17
  1. Stingray (5:25)
  2. Burning Crystal (6:39)
  3. An Infinite Number Of Possibilities (5:40)
  4. 720 Degrees (5:55)
Review: Since 2011, or what we could describe as the rebirth of vintage electronic music and the muddled, increasingly convoluted evolution of 'bass' music, Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun has been providing our charts, and the wider scene, with consistently high levels future-proof techno. Slightly Ajar is his third release of 2017 already, and it comes through on his own Elastic Dreams imprint with a squadron of deep and effortlessly mesmerizing electronic shapes. "Stingray" opens with an ocean of euphoric pads and industrial rhythms coming together as one, and is followed elegantly by the much deeper, more reflective broken patterns of "Burning Crystal". On the B-side, "An Infinite Number Of Possibilities" kicks the gears into motion with a much bouncier, club-centric techno groove filled with surreal melodies, and "720 Degrees" buries a load of bleeps into a hypnotic bundle of sci-fi sonics for total dancefloor domination. Effective and ultra-sleek - the lot of them!

  1. Harvest (6:18)
  2. Prehistory (6:16)
  3. Death & Rebirth (4:34)
Review: Alessandro Adriani, the Italian-born, Berlin-based owner of the excellent Mannequin Records is up on Regis, Silent Servant and James Ruskin's Jealous God label, what can pretty much be boiled down to the continuation of the Sandwell District alliance. The focus is on hard-hitting slabs of jack-hammer techno with the crew's familiar hint of brutal industrialism at the core, which is perfect for the likes of Adriani's uncompromising 4/4 aesthetic. "Harvest" dominates the entirety of the A-side with its wild, bleeping wormhole of noise and organic drum patterns - the snares sounding suspiciously like metal axes hitting the chopping board; one the flip, "Prehistory" is relatively tamer on the surface, while still hitting hard down in the depths of the bass, and "Death & Rebirth" provides what comes most naturally to both artist and label... the sweet sense of tenebrous doom on the horizon.

  5. Black Magic (demo version) (7:07)
Review: Former Output man Marc Nguyen Tan has been pretty active since returning to production after a 10-year absence back in 2015. Here, his revival continues via a collaborative EP alongside similarly experienced Dane Kasper Bjorke. The headline attraction is undoubtedly "Black Magic", a sleazy and occasionally intense workout that wraps ragged acid lines, mind-altering electronics and hushed, new wave style vocals around a blistering post-punk drum pattern. The post-punk influences come to the fore on the decidedly fuzzy "101" and "Real Slow", which is thrillingly unusual and full of all manner of bizarre electronic flourishes and wayward saxophone solos. A couple of raw, stripped-back demo versions complete an impressive EP.

Review: Hailing from the fertile community they have built up around them in Bucharest, Delusion Men and their label Future Nuggets represent a very different twist on the contemporary Romanian electronic music scene. This album is a prime case in point, dealing in off-kilter wavey synths, intriguing rhythmic approaches and spooked out atmospheres that speak as much to the folkloric mystery of the East as any electronic traditions from other parts of the world. If you're drawn to music that sends you to exotic new places on the fringes of your imagination, then Stuck On The Border is the album for you.

Final Frontier Of Electro

  3. Final Frontier Of Electro (4:31)
  4. Armada Bass (4:57)
  5. Injection Star (5:13)
  6. Really Inception (3:26)
Review: Rawax's latest electro outing comes from one of the Godfathers of the Detroit electro scene, former Aux88 associate DJ Di'jital. Given his pedigree, it's no surprise to find that Final Frontier of Electro is pretty darn good. Across the six tracks he touches on numerous electro variants - ghetto-tech, Miami bass, the Kraftwerk-inspired early New York style and Drexciyan intensity - combining them into thrilling new hybrid shapes. It's rare to find an EP with this many high-grade club tracks, making picking highlights tricky. That said, we're particularly enjoying the thrusting, all out assault of "Injection Star" and the intergalactic, techno-influenced hustle of the forthright title track.
