Review: The ninth album from Barry Ashworth's Dub Pistols crew sees them teaming up with an amazing array of guests, ranging from Lindy Layton of Beats International fame, to rave heroes Ragga Twins and breakbeaters Freesylers, complete with UK reggae MC Top Cat in tow. The sound is the usual genre-bending combination of reggae and dub fused with punk, two tone ska, jungle, breaks and a whole lot more. No huge surprise the, but there's no denying it sounds as fresh as ever here, if not fresher.

Review: A quarter of a century young and still a masterful slice of 90s dub, Fear Of A Green Planet gets an expanded reissue treatment courtesy of Echo Beach. Dub Syndicate could be considered On-U Sound's centrifugal force, comprised of the players which powered so many of Adrian Sherwood's projects from Style Scott on drums to Errol Holt on bass, Skip McDonald on lead guitar and many more besides. On this particular album Bill Laswell also popped up to lend some low end, and overall the assembled crew laid down one of their strongest statements in a catalogue fit to burst with dubwise perfection. Loaded with unreleased extras, this is the definitive edition for those who want to lose themselves in a deep well of riddims.

Review: The more time that goes on, the more every Dub Syndicate album becomes more appreciated. At the end of the 90s, dub music was at an all-time low popularity wise - the genre was going through changes and vinyl sales were dwindling. In 1997, Style Scott even started his own label Lion And Roots away from On-U Sound which had been the home of Dub Syndicate since they started almost 20 years prior. Mellow & Colly shows the group moving away from the more sample heavy earlier works to a mature dub sound that incorporated more electronics thanks to the Echo Beach label partnership that Style's label worked out. Sadly, Style passed away ten years ago this year but his music is still being felt thanks to reissues like this.

Review: The latest missive on Mad Professor's long-running Ariwa Sounds imprint comes courtesy of Dubheart, a seven-piece roots reggae band who have already self-released a number of rock solid albums. It's something of a collaborative affair, with the South West-based outfit recording - and re-recording - a swathe of their own riddims and those from classic Ariwa cuts with the help of producer Mad Professor and his sons Joe and Kamal. The result is a fresh dub album with a classic Ariwa feel - think bold, sub-heavy basslines, echoing keyboard parts, delay-laden percussion hits and guitar parts that drift back and forth across the soundspace. If you're a fan of Mad Professor's work - and let's face it, who isn't - you'll love it.

Review: Crooked Man aka the legendary DJ Parrot is also Earth Angel and here he is back with a second project on Foundation Music following the release of two singles with the renowned new jazz singer Lady Blackbird. Here he goes back to his roots in Sheffield in the 1980s when Black music forms were fast emerging on the scene and having a huge influence on the fledgling electronic movement. The music in this record taps into that with sounds that mix up street soul, boogie, heavy bass and some great songwriting from Crooked Man with originals, versions and expansive dubs all featuring.

The New York natives have released several tribute albums to said figureheads, not least Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Review: Easy Star All Stars are known for their dub versions of the pinnacle of classic rock albums out there - think Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Their latest project, though, is Ziggy Stardub, which you could probably guess is a tribute to the late David Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Produced by Michael Goldwasser, the All Stars reinterpret some of Bowie's most renowned songs in a highly effected dub style, remaining respectful to the original while producing a slew of homages: the likes of 'Five Years', 'All The Young Dudes' and 'Starman', as well as non-hits such as 'Suffragette City', not to mention four new dub versions. The All Stars make evident their love and admiration for Bowie's music, to the extent that we think you couldn't have made this LP without a genuine Bowiemania held in your heart.

Review: Jackie Edwards is like catnip for reggae lovers and the good news is that two of his albums are being reissued. Original Mr Cool Ruler has never been reissued on vinyl before and is a classic from 1983 that was recorded by Scientist and produced by Bunny Lee - two serious heavyweights of the scene. Musicians featured on the album include some of Jamaica's best - Sly & Robbie, Jackie Mittoo, Winston Wright and Earl Chinna Smith. As well as his solo work, Edwards - who had chart-topping singles in Jamaica in the 60s - also worked with The Aggravators and recorded duets with Millie Small.

Review: During the pandemic lockdown, Fat Freddy's Drop looked themselves away in the iconic Michael Fowler Centre in the band's hometown of Wellington, New Zealand. There was no audience as a reflection of the weird times, but they still set to jamming out a wealth of conscious songs of freedom and hope for a generation. Their whole studio was relocated to the venue along with an MPC and allowed the band to turn out slow burn classics like 'Soldier', 'Hope' and 'This Room' as well as test drive 'Avengers', which was a brand new track in the making.

Review: Fat Freddy's Drop originally released Blackbird in 2013 on their own The Drop label, and now they're revisiting this surefire classic with a remix package which takes their mellow, soulful dub strain in some surprising directions. The Remix of 'Blackbird' which opens up the album features Kings picking up the mic, while the mighty Nightmares on Wax gets busy with a version of 'Russia'. Review: Froid Dub's new album Deep Blue Bass on French label Delodio is as deep as the Mariana Trench. The bubbling bass and gurgling synth lines bring a new aesthetic to digi-dub that places you at the centre of the cavernous and aqueous sound worlds. Mystic synth leads take the mind away up top as those bottom ends rumble on in an atmospheric fashion. Tunes are subtle marbled with acid lines and echoes, digi-dub bleeps and icy hi-hats that all help oil the rhythms and accent the basslines. A superb work.

Review: Even before the demise of the legendary Leeds bleep techno duo LFO - the band that effectively launched Warp Records after crashing the Top 10 with their eponymous debut single - one half of them, Gerrard Kevin Varley, had become G Man. From the mid-90s onwards he was hella busy, with 45 releases overall including three albums. As such, he has a vast back catalogue ripe and ready for pillage for retrospectives and that's what we get here with a second From The Vaults collection. What it serves up is seven cuts of techno that are all largely deep and dubby but range from zoned-out rollers to more textural and edgy deep space fare. The sound design throughout is what elevates this beautifully functional and atmospheric collection. Another must have bit of techno history from G.

Review: Gaia Tones makes mind-bending ambient-ish soundscapes laden with influences from dub, world music, Afro, jazz and more. They all tap into deeply ritualistic practices and a primeval desire in us all to dance and they sound at once futuristic but also ancient. They are coated in dust and dirt, mired in reverb and feel as if the tracks might fall apart at any moment - if they don't, they take you deep into an unknown but welcoming word of wonderful weirdness. And that is the dark and beautiful charm of this music. This is a tape packed with loads of unreleased bits. Essential stuff.

Review: The finely named Leeds based crew Gentleman's Dub Club come back once again with a sixth studio album. This one has some standout guest spots from Hollie Cook and Gardna and is again filled with the sort of festival pleasing tunes that have become their bread and butter. Much of Down To Earth was recorded during live studio sessions - during the various lockdowns that happened in the UK - and so the magic of their on stage performances is captured perfectly in the tunes. Review: Joe Gibbs is a legendary dub producer and African Dub Chapter 1 is one of his most all-time classic albums alongside fellow production heavyweight Errol Thompson. The pair is better known together as The Mighty Two and while this first chapter of their dub collection is vital, it is no better than the ensuing two which you should also hunt down and purchase. This fully licensed issue sounds superb when cranked up loud, as it should be, and has suitable fat low ends and plenty of irresistible Jah vibes that will sink you in deep to the sofa or get you nodding along in no time.
