Cheremushki Groove (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TTR 002 . Rel: 03 Apr 17
  1. Cheremushki Groove (feat Monokle) (6:52)
  2. Fluid (4:29)
  3. Cataract (6:16)
  4. Cheremushki Groove (The Cyclist remix) (6:53)
Review: Having lurked in the tape scene for many moons, AL-90 brings his dishevelled house sound to the dancefloor with this single for Tape Throb. Despite the name of the label, this is in fact destined for vinyl, and leads with the fuzzy yet funky "Cheremushki Groove", assisted in the process by Monokle. There's a whiff of Gerry Read's dusty production values present on "Fluid", but AL-90 seems locked into a more discernible beat. That changes on "Cataract" with its degraded hardcore breaks drowning under a sea of unforgiving processing, while Tape Throb label boss The Cyclist is an appropriate choice of remixer to finish the record with a crunchy yet focused version of "Cheremushki Groove".

Solace (white vinyl 12")
Cat: AM 010. Rel: 17 Apr 17
  1. Solace (7:09)
  2. Earthloop (version) (6:55)
Review: Best known as Paradox, this is Dev's first Alaska solo EP in several years and it's as cold-yet-alluring as you'd hope. Contrary to the sample on "Solace", Dev Pandya hasn't picked up any bad habits during his near-30 year tenure. As the poignant strings sweep over broad brushed breaks it's clear that he keeps getting better. Flip for the ultimate slo-mo excursion "Earthloop" takes us back to an original beatless trip from his last Alaska LP (The Mesozoic Era) adding quarter speed to give the yearning cosmic synths a sense of momentum. Chilly.

Bumbaclart (reissue) (burgundy vinyl 12")
Cat: HZN 064. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Bumbaclart (5:58)
  2. Dilate (5:27)
Review: James Evans and Andy Tweedale have not donned the Amoss moniker for a while, with their last EP dropping two years ago. Horizon Music has decided to offer a reminder of their skills by reissuing 2013 single Bumberclaart on burgundy coloured vinyl. The two-tracker remains arguably the duo's best moment. The title track is particularly potent, featuring as it does a punchy combination of druggy, pitched-down rave noises, ricocheting, dub-influenced electronics, rumbling sub-bass, and D&B drum beats that hit home harder than a punch to the guts from Anthony Joshua. Flipside "Dilate" is dark, trippy and tech-tinged; while rock solid and floor-friendly, it lacks the sheer weight of the impeccable A-side.

  1. From Dusk Till Dawn (feat Daddy Freddy) (6:13)
  2. From Dusk Till Dawn (feat Daddy Freddy - TMSV remix) (5:20)
Review: Three years on from his last appearance on wax, Guido van der Brink dusts down the Atiq aliases and returns with something suitably heavy: a club-ready D&B smasher featuring the syllable-a-nanosecond rap of soundsystem culture legend Daddy Freddy. Van der Brink's original version, a weighty fusion of bustling breakbeats, ten-ton sub-bass, moody electronics and echo-laden reggae style stabs, can be found on the A-side, with TMSV handling remix duties on the flip. It's a sizeable rework built around a seriously sustained sub-bass assault and beats that sit somewhere in between Exit style experimental D&B and weighty dubstep.

Review: The lion has awoken... 25 years after its original rave-blazing release "Exodus" gets a timely rewind. Following the first part which featured professor choppage himself Luke Vibert, Sneakers Social Club invite more dons to the fold: Special Request blows the speakers off with a rewind-loaded switch session that follows a path of its own while Bristol heads Die and Addison Groove get busy on the rave breaks. Both crucial updates on a seminal classic.

Cat: WOLFLP 003RMX. Rel: 13 Mar 17
  1. Carlotta (Al Zanders remix) (8:01)
  2. Oddity (Moomin remix) (6:20)
Review: The latest release from the reliable Wolf Music camp is a limited edition, hand-stamped affair, and features two previously unheard remixes of tracks from Casino Times' Familiar Circles full-length. On the A-side, Al Zanders does a stellar job reworking "Carlotta", in the process laying down a hypnotic, percussion rich deep house shuffler full of bright cowbell hits, sunset-friendly jazz guitar licks and bubbly electronic melodies. On the flip you'll find a more than pleasant surprise: a deep, dreamy and utterly beguiling drum & bass remix of "Oddity" from Smallville regular Moomin. Its expert combination of evocative musical elements and crispy, snare-driven D&B rhythms is reminiscent of the golden age of Bukem-style liquid D&B.

Review: Is it you? Is it your neighbour? Is it your mum? Still no one knows who Dawn Wall is (or are) but we know we're cruising point blank towards an album. Here are four more reasons to look forward to it; "Twin Falls" rolls with the anonymous artists' signature piano lulls and a hazy vocal sample. Simple, soulful, bliss. "Mantis" hits a little harder with warm insistent key strikes, a groaning bassline and some interesting textures fluttering overhead while "Holding On" flexes a Gill Scott vocal and Think Break with guitar glistening perfection. Finally "Mariner" takes us out to choppier oceans where the seas and keys are notes of deep blue. The mystique continues...

Review: Catch these limited gold vinyls and take a big bite of history while you're at it as Dom rolls out a series of some of his most sought after dub plates from golden era. We rewind to 97 for these, both made with Headz in mind and hammered by the biggest names at Blue Note, they speak for themselves; "Aliens" is a brutally dense weave of alien textures and tones while "Zodiac" licks with a little more toxic funk in the bass and sharpness on the chiselled two-step. You can literally feel the heritage heaviness as it pours from your speakers.

Review: FTP001 marks the debut of a freshly minted label, FrieTanzPlatten. There's little other info to impart, so we'll head straight onto the music, which is gleefully eccentric and wonderfully hard to pin down. There are references to classic jungle and hardcore material all over the place - see the Vincent Price-sampling, dubwise movements of Edward Mudwasser's brilliant "Shivers (DJ Normal 4 & 4 Boom Hombre Lobo Mix)", or the rush-inducing rave revivalism of Son Of A Loop's "TnJ Loop" - but also a range of tracks that stick two fingers up at convention. Check, for example, the deep space explorations of Mood Ring's "Where R U Now", which surprisingly features a very weary male vocal, and the wayward acid madness of DJ Groov's "Energy Ensemble".

Review: Thanks to delivering some tip-top material over the last 12 months, Emperor is widely considered to be one of drum & bass's most exciting young talents. His style isn't exactly left-of-centre, but he's not afraid to tamper with the drum & bass blueprint in search of next-level dancefloor thrills. Take opener "Defect", for example, whose fusion of choppy, breakcore-influenced drum programming, mutilated Dalek voices and mechanical bass is undeniable off-piste. Elsewhere on this impressive double-pack, you'll find the full-frontal assault on the senses that is "Shadow", the precise-but-punchy rhythms and mind-melting industrial bass of "Calypso", and the weighty horror-jungle of "Tireless".

Review: After years of killer cuts on Fokuz and Celsius, longstanding Austrian soul seekers Roy Green & Protone make their Spearhead debut with four on-point rollers and a selection of well-welcomed collaborations... "The Healer" leads with a breezy, roomy chiming aesthetic that fools you into the idea you're dreaming before "Why Don't You" kicks you hard in the wake stakes with its rolling fretless bass and lingering pianos. "Carpaccio Funk" continues the real bass feel, this time with a loose-stringed double bass chatting away under low key trumpets and a classic break that has SG's stamp all over it. Finally "Arrivee" shuffles in a sweet closure. Spacious and restrained it's the type of track that fits in everywhere and never leaves your playlist.

Review: The latest slab of heaviness of Addictive Behaviour is a three-way hoedown. First to the plate is one of the most talented women in drum & bass, Kyrist. Her cut, "The Drifted", offers a punchy, on-point fusion of cinematic production, dark vocal samples and immaculately programmed beats. Addictive Behaviour regulars Data 3 join forces with newcomers Revaux on "Basilisk", a rip-roaring concoction full of eerie aural textures, bowel-bothering bass and rolling drums. Finally, MC Tension hops on the mic to give extra hype to Mystic State's closer "Burned Vision", which offers a typically tough fusion of guttural sub-bass and alternating kicks and snares.

Review: Emerging on Loxy's Cylon in 2015 with "85-15", Sardinian artist Otto Smith returns with another remarkable four-track exploration. "Nether Legions" will kick you in the nether regions with its throbbing subs, kicks and cold pads, "Menisco" is a game of tension and pay off as the layers reveal some thrilling energy in the toxic kicks, "Slow To Speak" builds and builds over eight minutes with twisted industrial strength dub techniques and technoid echoes while "Smoke & Shadows" closes the show with a stepper that manages to be both manic (with its percussive loop) and subtly restrained (with its chasmic dubspace). Expect plenty of life from this one...

  2. Our Home & Heart Is In Berlin, As We Believe In The Potentials Of The Local Creative Scene
Review: A Colourful Storm turns its third release over to a pressing social issue in the heart of Berlin, concerning artists evicted from a studio space versus the property moguls trying to appear hip in dealing with the situation. Amidst the tensions surrounding the PostOst co-op and their ongoing struggles, lesser known producer Mark recorded and produced this record of fraught low frequencies and nervous percussive rattles. As well as the message behind the music, the sound itself is powerful, using immersive sound design to draw out a space for the listener in a manner that might sound at home on a label such as Blackest Ever Black.

Review: He might not actually be from Mars - he's really from Texas - but old double-M here definitely makes space-aged sounds. Tapping into the original roots, it's all about the roominess, the refusal to sit still and uncompromising aesthetics. "Exile Dub" groaning bass that swoons in the background as rusty amens switch and flicker and a disarming vocal texture melts over the top. You could imagine this at Blue Note in the late 90s. "The Mind" takes a more restrained route with brushed far-away drums stepping back for the light-touch jazzy chords.

Review: Metalheadz regular Mikal is the latest producer to join the Dust Audio revolution. His Spirited EP is predictably impressive, with the producer doing his best to create a dark and atmospheric mood via distorted electronics, mutant basslines, and the kind of crunchy, hybrid jungle/D&B drums that are all the rage right now. Title track "Spirited" is like a metallic punch to the guts, with a spooky extended build-up giving way to a mind-altering sub bass assault and fizzing breakbeats. "Low Notes" is a slightly calmer, deeper and darker take on the same blueprint, while "Linear" drifts through space before dropping into another killer fusion of hot-stepping D&B drums and psychedelic sub-bass.

"Ting N Tings" is every rave tape pack and Vibealite flyer in the world condensed down into a short, sharp, energetic and multi-layered shock. "Mutation Experts" flexes back on a system-primed halfstep that cleverly mutates into a skippy breaks energy midway, "Ruff Times" murks up the feels with a stripped back percussive rolling aesthetic that's laced with seriously far-out instrumentation while we sign off with the sedate shimmers and tones of the guitar-strumming, bongo-stroking Balearic nodder "Positive Yourself".

Review: Following their divisive rock-spiked slammer on Hospital earlier this year, Need For Mirrors and Reprazents' Onallee collide once again for something a lot more consistent with their previous output; the ice cold introspective space soul of "Dead Poets". Restrained and loaded with a mean drone, it's an instant keeper. As are "Virage" and "Tempora". The former is a slinky stepper laced in churchy echoed-out strings, the latter tricked out in stark safari sound design and big clouds of sci-fi funk. Superb.

Review: Make hay while the sun shines... Binga and Unit's Bunit collaborations are rare - both in volume of pressings and in the fact they're only doing one collabo a year. Lucky for us there are four tracks to chow down on and they're all as remarkable, rich and alluring as you'd want them to be. "Optimus Prime" is almost Italo in its synth silkiness and rare groove, "2000 Dogs" is the dancehall your great grandkids will be dancing to while "Up & Under" is an all-out bubbly jungle brock out and "Baby Steps" winds down on a cinematic, emotional sci-fi finale. Beautiful stuff... Bun it at your peril.

  1. Raindance (4:45)
  2. Terraform (4:39)
  3. Murmur (feat Intech) (4:31)
  4. Septic (4:38)
Review: Previously known as half of Perverse, Alex Dickson makes his full debut as solo artist Pugilist on the deep bass mothership Artikal. It's fire from the off as "Raindance" brings more than just a shower as a waspish bass conjures thunder before the cloudy keys come in. Dig deeper for the sludgy warped spacefunk of "Terraform", the dubby echoes and cavernous space of "Mumur" and the Skeptical-style two-step tease of "Septic". Serious moves.

  2. Another (5:05)
  3. A'Roving (7:16)
Review: 1432 R is an independent record label based in Washington DC, founded by Joyce Lim, Sami Yenigun, and Dawit Eklund. Mikael Seifu, E.R.(Endeguena Mulu) and Ocobaya have all appeared previously for the imprint. Described best by the label themselves as 'outside the box, nonstop evolving, slammin' drum n' bass', RBCHMBRS throw down a bunch of deep and soulful rollers; the kind of breakbeat science that's reminiscent of early noughties UK greats such as LTJ Buken, Marcus Intalex & S.T. Files or Calibre. The title track takes breakneck beats a rinsed through tape delays and beat repeats while a saturated and lo-fi house aesthetic is applied throughout. This style endures throughout the rest of the EP with B side cut "A'Roving" getting you lost in its hypnotic loops only to be snapped back into reality by its violent use of said delay.
