Dissymmetrical Vinyl 01 (140 gram vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: DSSMV 01. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Asymmetric - "Stormy" (7:12)
  2. Asymmetric - "Quarantine" (7:15)
  3. Asymmetric + Limit - "Transzendental" (7:49)
  4. Asymmetric + Limit - "Jazz Is..." (6:35)
Review: Limit and Asymmetric are in fact both the work of St. Petersburg-based producer Evgeniy Sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary D&B productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. "Stormy" is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and "Quarantine" is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. The B-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of "Transzendental" and the soulful yet ruff mood of "Jazz Is..." making a smart counterpoint to the heavier A side.

Review: A brand new label from Deep Space operator Aural Imbalance (aka long-time contributor Simon Huxtable) Dedicated to the future-fringes that are often overlooked in the pursuit of something more instantly heavy-hurting, this launch release is the consummate mission statement: "Nine Tease" is straight of out of the Omni Trio book with its lavish hooky melody skipping over the space-aged beats, "Spiral Divide" continues the cosmic theme with a little more jazzy, loose-limbed drum magic while "Alpha Protocol" is an abyssal stepper soaked in dense atmospheres and twinkling hooks. More of this.

  4. Untitled Roller (7:08)
Review: Last summer, Champa B impressed with an EP of unadulterated jungle revivalism on Criterion. That 12" was marked out by the Newcastle producer's ability to chop, slice and dice breaks like the style's original early '90s masters. That micro-editing ability comes to the fore once more on this four-track junglist rinse-out. Choose between the dark, paranoid and sub-heavy explosion that is "Handle of Reality", the icy electronics and frenzied Amen break cut-ups of "Haunted Spaces", the hard-stepping surge of concrete-clad ripsnorter "Footsteps" and the woozy dreaminess of standout cut "Untitled Roller", whose drifting vocal samples are little less than intoxicating.

  1. Hermetica (6:19)
  2. The Connection (7:08)
Review: The man behind one of last year's most mesmerising tunes "Levanter" returns with two more absolutely mesmerising sonic spells. There's a strong organic feel to the instrumentation and gradual build of "Hermetica" as we're fried and plied around oceanic spaces in a similar way to The Hidden Orchestra. "The Connection" builds on the story with an even deeper tone as an oboe weaves wonders around the loose jazzy drums. As with his previous releases on Narratives, this really is one of a kind.

  1. King Of The Bongo
  2. Stickybuds Guaranteed
Review: Breakbeat warriors Deekline and Ed Solo team up again, and this time they've gone for it. Not content with producing some of the nastiest, wobbliest breakbeat around, they've decided to turn their hand to drum & bass and another release on Jungle Cakes. Lead cut "King Of The Bongo" is a cheeky exercise in bootleg jump-up buffoonery - the sort of tune that boasts a grin a mile wide and a happy dancefloor to match. Flip "Stickybuds Guaranteed" opts for a slightly more old skool jungle approach, mashing up skankin' MC and familiar pop vocals. It goes without saying that both tunes feature stupidly heavy basslines.

Cat: DDD 03T. Rel: 15 May 17
  1. End Of Line (6:09)
  2. Acid Roller (5:41)
Review: Dom's upped the ante once again with his Dubs From The Dungeons series... Not content with dusting off his own percy classics, he's brought in some of the most influential peers in drum & bass history. Peers like the one and only Dillinja who's taken us right back to the Blue Note 1997 with two still-futureproofed sci-fi hurters. "End Of The Line" is understated and heads-down machine funk with all the graininess you expect from the era. "Acid Roller" is a more dominant steppy jam with insane amen flurries firing up the fills and a bassline that's perplexingly distorted yet crisp. Listen closely and you can hear the foundations of another well known Dillinja tune. Go for gold.

Review: Having played a role in Existence Is Resistance's inaugural "Lost DATs" volume, original junglist don D Lux returns to take care of the third volume single handedly. Previously the sole preserve of acetate, both cuts slap and batter with foundation charm: "Interferance" is so well sculpted the drums literally sing while "False Alarm" is a soundboy slewing danger roller with twisted reverse effects on the bass and savage drum energy. Deluxe indeed.

Review: Danish producer Milan Zaks has largely impressed since releasing his first cassette of dusty, rave-influenced downtempo grooves last year. Modern Species, his first outing for Firecracker Recordings, is easily his most expansive and impressive release to date. Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

  1. Invasion (6:19)
  2. Revenge (5:29)
Review: Dom's Dubs From The Dungeons series continues with more long-lost treasures from one of the most genre-compounding eras in drum & bass. According to legend "Invasion" takes root in a remix of Ed Rush before becoming the sci-fi odyssey it is now. Rolling on some deliciously loose and jazzy breaks, there's a latent funk beneath the foreboding veneer. "Revenge" takes a much more direct approach with its teeth-baring bass grunts and glacial pads. Like everything in this series (and pretty much everything Dom has ever released full stop) these don't stand the test of time - they reverse it.

Review: Holotype heavyweights DC & CB are up to their old tricks again. Tried and tested from its download run since last December, these outrageously weighty jams enjoy the vinyl outing they deserve. "Death Becomes You" hits like an old Digital record. Clattering cymbals and a sub bass bassline that will knock your socks clean off your feet without taking off your trainers. "The Bunker" is straight out of Blue Note circa 95. Mentasm, 45 King snare shots and enough gully to coat their entire Welsh homeland with raw jungle slime. Something needs to be done about this.

Review: It's four years since Dub Phizix brought his brand of mutant, bass-heavy dancefloor experimentalism to Exit Recordings. Happily, Rebel Spirit sees the label-hopping producer at the top of his game, delivering four distinctive tracks that look far and wide for inspiration. He begins with "Hack", where post-punk era guitar motifs, industrial textures and buzzing electronics wrap themselves around surging sub-bass and snappy, post-dubstep beats, before unleashing to drunken UK funky melody lines, dystopian beats and off kilter rhythms of "Rebel Spirit". Flip for the pitched-down UK funky-meets-Afro-bass heaviness of "(Right I'm Gonna Get Shredded This Weekend So Let Me Eat Some) Spinach" and spacey D&B stepper "Subway Swingers".

Review: Following the Globex Corp series launch last year, foundation revivalists 7th Storey continue to encourage the rawest, most authentic roots rave from its family members. Here we're treated to four more untitled damagers that cross the early 90s board with late 2010s production skills... Dwarde takes the lead with some bonafide 93 jungle badness while Reaper hogs the rest of the EP with one brutal hardcore original, a sprightly early 2 Bad Mice style cut with Worldwide Epidemic and a serious b-boy jungle shock out with Dev/Null. This isn't likely to hang around.

Review: Already a success on digital for the Canadian crew, Sweet Sensi now press their third release to the wax where it belongs. Russian Feyder takes the A with a skank-packed take on Toots that's around 54-56 tonnes heavy. Label co-boss DJ Clear takes care of the B with an even wilder piece of work as "Badboy / Smokin Sensi" whistles and slurs with some of the nuttiest drum edits this side of 1994. Two absolute wig-tuggers; grab this while you can.

Review: Flying Dutchman Coco Bryce raises the jungle flag on the 7th Storey once again and he's rolling deep in decorated company as the longstanding break butcher Triple F appears alongside him. FFF takes the lead with "The Return", a ricochet roller where the swampy sub does all the negotiating. "Krisp Biscuit" backs up the don's 7th Storey debut with similarly stirring results as a cosmic cascade is underlined by classic dub elements. Elsewhere we find both men going toe-to-toe on a crunchy industrial drum hardcore reverse funk jam "Double Dragon" while Coco closes the show with the emotional rush-hurricane "The Mother Goddess". Review: New Berlin beat explorers Through These Eyes continue to forage into new spaces with exciting new talents. This time we're treated to tones from NYC/Vancouver deepsmiths Folding City who proceed to take us into their darkest depths and most uplifting heights. "On Point" is an acidic slow jam that stomps with grunt and weight you'd expect to hear in a dBridge set. "Museling" continues the halftime-ish beat fusion but with hazy R&B vocal textures and lilting guitars that give just enough sparkle and sense of restrained hope. Understated, heavy and different; There's a lot going on right here.

Review: As the heat from his Negative Space album continues to scorch the leftfield drum & bass hinterland, Seattle's Homemade Weapons makes his debut on Dispatch. He's rolling deep as MC Fokuz takes on the studio in the same way his controls a crowd, applying UK consciousness, paranoia and barbed charm across each of the four cuts. Flexing from the minimal Lynx & Sense-style ice of "Chrysalis" to the savage tech stepper with DBR "Paper Thin" by way of the necksnap jungle fire of "Lost Souls" with Cern none of the parties involved here hold back. This is special.

Review: When Hertfordshire-based drum & bass producer Law launched Repertoire back in 2009, it was with his debut single, the double A-side "Sophine/Emptiness is Form". Eight years on, he's decided the time is right to revisit the tracks. On the A-side he joins forces with friend and regular studio buddy Wheeler to breathe new life into "Sophine". Utilizing a classic jungle-era breakbeat, dreamy chords, blissful vocal samples and punishing sub bass, the duo creates a club-ready roller tailor made for sunsets and sunrises. Proximity Recordings regular Outer Heaven takes control on the flip, delivering a more ruffneck jungle interpretation of "Emptiness is Form" full of vintage MIDI edits, dark vocal samples and spooky textures.

Review: Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge are in the thick of another superb year; fresh off the back of two killer twelves from Moresounds and TMSV and the announcement of Danny Scrilla's album comes an outer planetary EP from label newcomer Margari's Kid. Hailing from Spain physically but clearly in the same spiritual place as the rest of the label's family, each cut tickles a deep beat tendril: The dubby textured techno of "Losy Brightness", the whirling, wheeling eeriness and twisted ghetto loop of "PWD" and the sheer churchy uplift of both opener "Halt" and closer "Init 1" set up Margari's Kid's stall with serious intention. We can't wait to hear more from this exciting bass newcomer.

Review: Alpha Steppa has had a hand in half of Trigram's releases to date, so it's probably fitting that he's featured on the label's latest 10" adventure. His contribution, "Ro Health", is an undeniably unique proposition: a skewed fusion of off-kilter dubstep rhythms, exotic Asian instrumentation, trippy electronics and the kind of monstrous sub-bass movements that sound ridiculously filthy on sizeable soundsystems. Musai Soundworks A-side excursion "Hoinar" is arguably even better. Beginning with some half-step beats and sharp South Korean violin lines, it quickly morphs into a heavy tropical drum and bass roller.

Likewise, "Duvel" guarantees wasp-chewing bass faces of the ugliest order with its pranged out mentasms, "Beautiful Suicide" hammers with such weight and pressure it could crush tungsten and "Bulldog" wraps up the session with a heads-down fuzzy groove that's restrained-yet-raw in classic Dispatch style.

Review: With an immaculate string of cosmic constructions on the likes of Rupture and 117 in the last year, it was only a matter of time before rising London beatsculpter Outer Heaven landed on the consistently-hurting UVB imprint. Both parties credentials speak volumes, as do the beats: the continuous cycles and twists of the title track, the cavernous room for thought on "Azimuth", the sludgier roller damage of "Moonfunk" and the classic foundation breaks on "Outback". Even the title is spot on... If "Pathos" doesn't appeal to your emotions you're one stone cold cookie.

The beats come through clear and punchy while the instrumentation takes its lead from LTJ Bukem's smoother moments to results in a very palatable kind of liquid drum & bass. This is as feel good as the genre can get, and with its wide scope for natural and synthetic sound sources it never tires on the ears. Whether it's the soaring vocal of Elena Aki on "Space Song" or the expressive guitar trills on "Taxi Driver", there's always something catchy to draw your ear in to Pageant's smooth as silk soundworld.

Review: If you have a passion for "ruffneck jungle music", you should already be aware of the Supercharged label. Since launching in 2015, the imprint has delivered a trio of heavyweight EPs boasting cuts from a variety of revivalist jungle producers. Volume four continues on this tip, beginning with the skittish breakbeats, Atari ST style micro-edits and creepy, Origin Unknown style melodies of Pastaman's "Dictatorship". Omen Breaks does his best impression of Luke Vibert in Amen Andrews mode on "Murderous Masters", before Simply Dread delivers a sumptuous slice of dreamy, head-in-the-clouds jungle ("Tiger"). Finally, Vocoda doffs a cap to Suburban Base-era DJ Hype via the springy pianos, swirling pads and bombastic beats of "Tiger".

Pagans (heavyweight vinyl 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: OSMUK 046EP. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. Pagans (7:18)
  2. Astrous (9:12)
  3. Inner Circle (6:54)
  4. Mist (6:44)
Review: Following releases on UVB-76 and A14, Pessimist makes his Osiris debut with a four-track adventure of broadsword designs. "Pagans" sets the tone naturally with a lean, linear step that can be traced throughout his work for the last seven years before "Astrous" and "Inner Circle" take us down much darker techno corridors in a similar way that Damon Kirkham might under his Jon Convex guise. "Mist" shrouds the finale in deep pads and a palpitating heartbeat drum and graveyard chords. Godlessly deep.

  6. Glauquemort (3:23)
Review: D.KO's very own Rag Dabons (aka label founder Gabriel and friend Sandro) get busy on the broken drums for this epic six-track EP that kicks it hardcore (the break-rifled jungle steppers "En Panna Dauber" and "Aloe Vera") kicks it old school (the icy charms of electro poppers "B1 Bobun" and "Electropop") and kicks it freestyle (the sludgy "Glauquemort" and echo chamber obliterating "Amarou & Behzad") Nothing will ever be the same again...

  1. A Minute After Always (feat Harland & Steo) (5:15)
  2. Lovin' U (5:01)
  3. Serenade (feat GLXY) (4:52)
Review: Two rising soulful D&B stars on one of the most reliable and on-point deep labels in the game with cameos from golden-toned Steo and hotly tipped newcomers GLXY... This EP ticks so many boxes you might run out of ink. "A Minute After Always" is a subtle-star gazing space soul number that's brought together immaculately by Steo's distinctive dulcets. "Lovin U" maintains the vocal velvet alongside blissful keys but a stern and weighted groove while "Serenade" (with GLXY) translates to soul grenade with its surging vocals and cosmic undertones. Stunning.
