Atlantic (12")
Cat: ELM 001V. Rel: 20 Jun 16
  1. A Sides - "Atlantic" (5:26)
  2. Will Miles - "Bass God" (5:17)
Review: American drum & bass is thriving right now and Elm Imprint is right in the eye of the storm with its monthly dispatches. This is the first time they've split artist duties across a 12" and it works a treat... Side A is all about A Sides with brash cymbal-splashing jungle roller while side B is all about the unstoppable Will Miles who pays homage to the 97-era techstep with brittle two-steps, gnarly bass plunges and a classic spoken sample. On-point.

  1. Stand Firm (feat Visionbi) (5:10)
  2. Shrine (5:28)
  3. Ghost Racoon (5:16)
Review: Barely half a year has passed since their long-awaited second album Timeline and Glen and Zula return with four more alluring constructs: "Stand Firm" flexes into the darker side with deft navigation from Visionobi while "Ghost Racoon" goes all-out darkside with its pneumatic hammers and tongs. For deeper experiences head for the sub-rattled "Reunion" and the sublime "Shrine". With its swooning chords and rich orchestration it's near-classical in its dynamism and weight. It's not the title track for nothing... Shrine on you crazy junglists.

  3. The Space Between (Method One remix) (5:50)
Review: California roller merchants BoS delivered one of 2015's finest D&B albums in the form of The Space Between. Now, as the LP dust begins to settle on the ever-developing D&B landscape, they've recruited some equally talented acts for a series of remixes.... Bcee & Villem twist up the bass and polish the strings on "Satisfy", Quadrant, meanwhile, adds a whole new level of dark drama to the deep dream dynamics of "Kanto" while Method One breaks down the album title track and rebuilds it somewhere off the second sun of Kepler-1647. Dive deep.

Review: A juicy liquid soul cherry atop an already delicious D&B cake, Bcee rounds up some of the most respected troops for the all-essential remix package. With Tokyo Prose, Klute, Pola & Bryson and GLXY on board, the emphasis really is on the word 'essential'. Highlights include P&B's synth shake-up on "Sun Goes Down" and the rampant drum splashes and added dark nuances on the album's title track. Comely.

  2. Astral Travel
Review: He's back! It's been a while since Bungle last graced our turntables; his 2011 album Memories to be precise. But he's returned. And he's done so with a double-sided disc of pure D&Beauty. "Aura" is an emotion soaked stepper laced with all the grace of an early 90s ambient record but beefed up with Autonomic standards. Already being pimped as an 'impossible to top' tune of the year by some of the biggest names in the game, it's unarguably essential. "Astral Travel" is equally stunning. Rolling with a heavier rhythm but dosed with the same amount of star gazing whimsy, it's another faultless moment from the Brazilian DJ. Welcome back Bungle.

  3. Optiv & Cza - "Sub Surface" (5:19)
  4. Disprove, Signal & Audeka - "Ritual" (5:16)
Review: Methlab: the agency behind some of the biggest names in tech D&B and innovative events around Europe continue their pact with Vegas & Maldini's Bad Taste imprint with the second instalment of in-house creations. As you'd expect, it's an all-out assault as Current Value leads the charge with a sizzling neuro racer "Pelham 212", the ever-innovative Billain tumbles behind with "Metal Jaws", a loose and frantic cut with drums that really shouldn't make sense, but definitely do. Elsewhere Optiv & Cza get gritty and abrasive on "Sub Surface" while Disprove, Signal and Audeka shove their middle fingers up at the space/time continuum with "Ritual". Brutal.

Review: Horizons take us on a trip to Italy by way of Amsterdam.... "Enchanter" sees serial tag-teamer and one-time gabber DJ Nymfo join Dabs for a spiked out funk jam where a ricochet hook plays ping-pong deftly from side to side over a skittery groove that wouldn't go amiss in a Kasra set. "Thematic", meanwhile, is a much blunter slab of sonic granite with its bruised bassline spanning the entire spectrum and its drums rolling defiantly underneath. Powerful.

Review: From the makers of "Gambino" comes "Bambino". A true roller coaster of a track with all its twists and turns, it's every bit as electrifying and densely textured as you'd expect from one of Ram's most heavyweight duos. For something a little on the leftside flip for the tripped out triplet rhythm with its downpitched vocals and strange synth flurries. The two sides of DC Breaks showcased in true style; it's yet another straight-to-dancefloor classic.

Review: Switching a lighter raising ballad with the energy and gusto of a sugar-high kid at Christmas, Delta Heavy's "White Flag VIP" has been anticipated since Andy C started teasing it around his Alexandra Palace show. Already loaded with feels, the new double time drums add even more emotion and euphoria. Flip for an out-and-out electrical fire as they team up with Metrik for a balls-out, peak time slap session. Excruciatingly good.

Review: A piquant side-dish to the epic feast that is his debut album Dispositions, Emperor delivers two delicious VIPs that aren't on every format of the LP. "Control VIP" subverts the bassline while our emphasis is still fully squared on the mechanical snare slaps. "Mindgames VIP", meanwhile, is just mental incarnate. An absolute molten lava belter of a track, the levels of distortion on this are just unreal. Obscene.

Review: Fokuz's Hateful Eighty album hits its third outing and it's a bit of an all-star cast... First up we find DBridge making his Fokuz debut with a sterling halftime, thunderous twist on Facing Jinx's already soul-touched "Meet You There". Review: The man like Freddie Dixon gets his soulful floaty flex on once again with four delicious slabs of rolling liquid moments. "Heart Of Gold" shimmers and sparkles with the help of Roisin Brophy who laces the sonic swoons with her soft-focus touch. "More Than Ever" is a deeper jaunt with cheeky flautist flurries and mild guitar twangs buried deep in the textures. "Still The Same" takes us back to the mid 2000s with lush filtered twists and a more stripped back kick/sub arrangement while "Snowdrops" packs a cool jazzy punch for the finale. Irresistible.

Review: Last spotted on Metalheadz, Friske leaps over the pond to America's Warm Communications imprint with two more iced out steppers. "Sustain" pivots around an industrial strength two-step drum arrangement as manipulated textures and ghostly FX whirl and echo in the ether, gradually creating a melody out of nowhere. "Cold Signal" takes us to even darker corners of the Londoner's psyche as paranoid tones whisper and gossip about over tungsten tipped kicks and snares. Grizzly business.

Review: Russian trio rooted in the foundations of Total Advance Music, here we find Gydra making their debut on Bad Taste with two outstanding slices of deep dark neurofunk. "Dystopia" rolls with drums made of pure thunder. Rolling like a super-sized cattle stampede, the drama never lets up as we're teased and teased with the prospect of drop that never comes. Meanwhile, "Insurrection" does provide a drop; gritty, mechanical and industrial strength. If you've ever wondered what a steel foundry melting down to the ground sounds like, this is pretty darned close...

Each cut a 24 carat diamond, shining in its own special way: "Mixed Bag" is a DRS-polished soulful addition to the ever-growing halftime annals, both "Step Forward" and "Stingray" are brittle two-step heads-down headbutts while "Jupiter" is an amen-rattled jungle shake-up. Timeless, deep and spacious; Marcus never fails.

Three years on and it's proved a worthy creative outlet for the Convex Industries man, and the Covering Ground EP finds him back on Exit, the label that debuted the Kid Drama sound. Ranging from the deep dark pneumatic rolls of "Red Magic" to the somnambulant soft-focus steps and alluring chord chang of "Luv" by way of the autonomic skips of "Wasted Time" Kid wears his heart(drive) on his sleeve throughout. Genuinely sublime.

It's a perfect fit; Lib's drum wizardry licking up all manner of shots with sudden stop/starts, electric edits and vibes so authentically jungle you can smell the crystals. "Test Your Might" pitches the snares to such degrees you'll swear you're having a conversation with them, "Yeah-Uh!" takes on more of a classic rave vibe with some cool halftime space and elephantine subs, "Step Off" is pure, unadulterated drum magic while "Falling" does that floaty cascading trippy thing that jungle has needed to create its still matchless equilibrium.

Silence Groove's "Kinky Questions" retains the early 2000s soul sparkle but with more of a sultry edge thanks to the deft use of a classic E-Smooth acapella sample. Don't play it while your nan is round.

Review: Utopia bossman Mako lives up to his label's name again with three heavenly slabs of contemporary drum & bass on Warm Comms. "For Love Or Money" is lush gradual builder than assumes a deep status until suddenly throwing us to the drum wolves mid-point. "The Shot Off" takes us down a much darker path from the off; crunched out basses that seem to live in a space of their own and drums so crisp you could cut bricks, it's pure alien funk of the most futuristic order. Finally we land softly back to earth with the deep dubby rolls of "How Do You Feel?" There's no questioning how you'll feel after this.

Review: Moopie's A Colourful Storm label launched earlier this year as an extension of the popular online platform that has hosted a rich and diverse stream of mixes from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, DJ Nobu, Frak and Rabih Beaini to name a few. Pro-tip: do check that latter live mix from the Morphine boss! It was the archival sounds of Denial and their lost Oz classic cover of "California Dreaming" that heralded the arrival of A Colourful Storm, but this second release on the label switches the focus to more contemporary fare. Power Relations is a two track 12" of bad-mannered, f*cked up club trax from Melbourne's Nerve. The stomping, nocturnal techno of the title track is backed with a Photek-meets-Sunn O))) terror stepper entitled "Heads & Ordinary Concrete". For fans of Regis, Emptyset and Blackest Ever Black.

Review: Whichever substyle he explores - from gritty, unabashed tech to melodic bliss - Nymfo has made versatility his signature. One of the few D&B artists who can appear on Renegade, Dispatch and Spearhead consecutively, his screen is one of the widest in the game. Case in point: this EP. From dreamy cloud-chowing ("Everyday Emotions", "Melting Pot") to Shogun-style MC-laced techy rollers ("Cheetah") by way of synth-led space-steppers ("Big Air"), Nymfo's repped a broad and highly accomplished spectrum once again. Here's a taste of the LP with DLR's sinewy tech take on Quiff's 93 agenda-maker "Champion Sound", a sultry slice of piano gold from Calibre and dubbed out stepped jam from the guys themselves as they pay homage to the likes of Digital and Spirit with "Respect Due". Review: It's been four years since Random Movement last appeared on Prestige, but it's like time has stood still: he's just as soulful and matchless as ever, and the label is just as reliable and respected as ever. "Nobody's Business" rolls with a dusty old sample and big jazzy washes while on the B "Remember Your Purpose" comprises an explosive combination of ingredients: a juicy droning sub is coated by trippy washes, hectic rim shots and a JB style preach vocal. The result is a psychedelic funk-out of the highest proportions.

Following some recent devilish drumfunk pieces, he's dipped back into golden liquid with the help of smoky horns, lilting Calibre-style pianos and the delicious dulcets of Jenna G. 2. All You Wanted (6:33)
Review: Most commonly known as Quivver, some of John Graham's earliest endeavours in the studio were that of a jungle nature. Largely regarded as ahead of his time - bucking the Bukem-esque 'intelligent' sound by a good few years - you can hear all soul-tingling progressive signatures that we've since heard as a member of Tilt, Quivver and Space Manoeuvres but over brackish, busted breaks. The eighth instalment of Skanna revisitations and remix here we find "The Greatest Thing" enjoying a subtle rework by Criminal Minds and the cosmic roller "All You Wanted" in all its untouched 94 glory. Both guarantee light and weight to any contemporary jungle/drum & bass set.

  1. The Crane (alternate version) (8:14)
Gespielt von: Soul Intent
Review: Boddika's NonPlus label commenced a programme of Source Direct reissues last year, pairing up tracks from the seminal UK jungle act with fresh remixes from some well-chosen contemporary artists. Blawan and Demdike Stare lent their distinct sonic sensibilities to the first two Source Direct 12" reissues last year, whilst Berlin techno type Inland was handed the hard task of reworking "The Crane" for the latest. To accompany that 12", NonPlus have secured an alternate version of "The Crane" which was allegedly uncovered on an old DAT Tape by Boddika and SD's Jim Baker. It's given pride of place on this one-sided 12" with the extended and stripped down take a must for any Jungle collectors out there.

The Crane (12")
Cat: NONPLUS 034. Rel: 13 Jun 16
  1. The Crane (6:48)
  2. The Crane (Inland & Function remix) (9:27)
Gespielt von: Soul Intent
Review: Nonplus began trawling through the Source Direct back-catalogue in early 2015, serving up essential reissues of acclaimed '90s jungle classics "Black Rose" and "Approach & Identify". Here, they revisit 1996 smasher "The Crane", where punchy jungle drums and Reese-influenced sub-bass come accompanied by woozy chords and creepy electronics. As with Nonplus's previous Source Direct reissues, the B-side boasts a contemporary remix. This time round, it's Brooklyn techno mavericks Inland & Function (Infrastructure New York, Ostgut Ton etc.) - whose careers began around the same time as Source Direct - delivering a radical but appropriately clandestine interpretation.
