Nautil 2/3 (12" + free download)
Cat: HIDDENHAWAIINAUTIL 2/3. Rel: 28 Jul 14
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
Review: Alien atmospheres, bassy sonar blips, crackling ambience, fizzing white noise and a barely-there groove makes the A-side of this second Nautil 12" a delight for ambient, industrial, drum and bass, techno and by and large experimental lovers alike. 943 has all the hallmarks of a Felix K production only without the rolling D&B beats, but who needs them when you have spatial textures like this! Toolshop drums with the rhythm of a hammer hitting a nail out of time provides the B-side with a awkward groove while dubby stabs form and disappear in the background behind the sound of hissing pistons from a make-believe steam works.

  2. 170 Untitled (6:29)
  3. Ghetto Chemistry (feat Lystone) (4:50)
  4. Just A Moment (5:49)
Review: Following his debut on CIA in autumn 2015, US artist Adred continues to show the breadth of sonic span and abilities on the equally respected Soul:R on their so-far-spotless "Fourfit" series. Each cut showing balancing restraint and weight with a strong emphasis on jazzy textures and tones, we're sideswiped by Manos's vocals and the strong "Oblique" feels of "Around The Sun", we're soothed with equal measures of nostalgia and synthetic soul on the Goodlookingesque "170 Untitled" before getting deep, dark and minimal on "Ghetto Chemistry" where Lystone adds a unique US hip-hop feel. Finally we walk the plank into Adred's deepest, oceanic cut to date where the waves are high, voluptuous and all consuming. Stunning.

Cat: EATBRAIN 021. Rel: 02 May 16
  1. The Order (5:23)
  2. Dangerous Materials (5:20)
Review: Eatbrain chowed down into 2016 with Agressor Bunx's properly epic five track EP. It's taken a while, but finally the vinyl version arrives with two of the strongest cuts of the EP. "The Order" comes with a harrowing reese chase that's not dissimilar to "The Nine" with all its droning, groaning charm. "Dangerous Materials" takes the more straight-up neuro route with its staccato stabs and sweaty drums that sound so loose and funky they could easily be on an Upbeats record. Comparisons don't come higher.

Cat: BNKR 001. Rel: 08 Feb 16
  1. Obscurity (5:35)
  2. Godspeed (5:25)
Review: The increasingly unavoidable Methlab collective establish another brand new label: BNKR is inspired by the a/v conceptual events Methlab have held around the world where the emphasis is squared on the immersive aspect of tech D&B. Launching with Mindtech affiliate Allied, you could get much more immersive if you tried: "Obscurity" is an ice-cold sheet metal stepper where hurricane bass offers warning shots but remains restrained throughout. On the B "Godspeed" changes the drum technique a much sharper punctuation while mean subs wheeze beneath the rhythm and a well-oiled alien bassline. A very impressive launch release.

  1. I'll Cut You Down (feat Rani)
  2. Mr Clark (wtih Nomine)
  3. Your Native God (feat Rani)
  4. Daaku
Review: Described in typically effusive terms as "lethal" by Mary Ann Hobbes, bass don AMIT returns with a second transmission on his AMAR imprint. Those of you who indulged in last summer's inaugural release on the label will need little extra incentive to indulge here, but curious parties new to the label read on. AMIT's knack for productions that are both delicate and dark is in full effect on lead track, where vocals from Rani offer a sense of fragility that's gradually consumed by the sheer bass weight of the production. "Mr Clark" meanwhile is a deliciously evil concoction of brutal percussion, rebellious bass and haunting echoed vocals from Nomine. Rani appears once more on the dubwise "Your Native God" whilst "Daaku" finds AMIT discarding with collaborations for a dark tribal skanker!

  1. New Era (4:33)
  2. New Era (VIP mix) (4:34)
Review: The start of what many fans are hoping will eventually be an album later this year, Andy C let rip into 2016 with a brand new jump-up party track that smacks of "Twist 'Em Out" era jump up mischief (before things got a little too silly on that side of the genre). Now finally enjoying a vinyl outing, its ballsy sub matches the spiky riff with a dynamic that was seemingly written with wax in mind. The VIP is an interesting approach too; rather than being wilder than the original, it's actually deeper and more heads-down. Classic Andy C subversion... Let's hope it does build to an album.

  3. Ghost Racoon (5:16)
Review: Barely half a year has passed since their long-awaited second album Timeline and Glen and Zula return with four more alluring constructs: "Stand Firm" flexes into the darker side with deft navigation from Visionobi while "Ghost Racoon" goes all-out darkside with its pneumatic hammers and tongs. For deeper experiences head for the sub-rattled "Reunion" and the sublime "Shrine". With its swooning chords and rich orchestration it's near-classical in its dynamism and weight. It's not the title track for nothing... Shrine on you crazy junglists.

Review: Peeping over the precipice of their second album, AI tease us with two unruly mood-setters. "Pass The Buck" features D&B's most consistent MC voice DRS who delivers in style over a stark understated bass tear that rips only when needed. Flip for an exclusive sampler-only collab with the ever-impressive SCAR: here the bass is anything but understated as it churns and groans and grizzles with twisted creativity. Two sure signs the album is going to be important when it drops later this month.

  3. Justify (feat Terri Walker) (4:12)
Gespielt von: FD
Review: Five years have passed since Artificial Intelligence last gave the world an album. The world of drum & bass has changed vastly since then, but they continue to plough their timeless path uncompromisingly. Like the first sampler, this EP features some very well selected guests (Terri Walker who has worked extensively with Spectrasoul and Swindle and the anonymous Dawn Wall) but the real stars are Zulu and Glenn. "Is This Real" is a purring double bass glider a la Full Cycle, "Scrolls" is a majestic diva-peppered dreamer (think early High Contrast or Logistics) "Justify" is a big old soul shock-out that's up there with their modern-classic "You Can Dream". Album hype doesn't get more beautiful than this.

  3. Reveal (6:55)
  4. Vanium (6:31)
Review: Modern auteur James Clements is back with more fascinating explorations of the grey zone. Starting out with the psychotic acid experiment of "Ignite" it is then business as usual on the title track, with its dark atmospheres and industrial textures contrasted by a belting gabber style beat; it's pretty brilliant. On the flip "Reveal" is another furious 170 BPM experiment, innovative as much as it is utterly confronting, while final track "Vanium" switches to cruise control on this mysteriously bleepy sci-fi epic somewhere between Sahko and the Autonomic sound. Sounds good enough right?

Review: Following two killer releases from label boss Amit and Nomine's "Empty Rooms", Amar wraps up its busiest (and best) year to date with two contrasting slices of modern day jungle... And introduces brand new talent in the process: Canadian newcomer AU. "Fear Dem" is a moody halfstep slapper drenched in Collinjah's soundclash-primed dancehall vocal while "Oncle Arm" is a jugular-cutting slab of classic jungle complete with Headz-style textures, growling bass and eerie samples. A very strong debut.

  1. Now The Future (4:28)

Review: Now The Future sees the return of Ram's heavily tatted neuro-monster Audio, offering up his first 12" salvo of 2016 for the drum and bass juggernaut and boy does it pack a punch! The sinister tones of the title track take you into the mind of Audio's twisted vision of the future, percussive elements ticking away under petrifying atmospheres, building up into an unstoppable bassline offensive. Complementing this, is the spine chilling "Drop It Human", a track that thrusts into a sonic array of growling mids and low end sub grit, delivering a devastating blow. Audio's precise, sharp, stepped trademark drum sound forms the backbone, marching the track through to inhuman perfection.

Review: Ram's heavily tatted neuro-monster Audio lays down two more muscular tech-shredders for the more rapacious dancefloors. "Shatterdome" mischievously provokes the EDM psyche with a cheery synth line before hurling you into a sea of sandpaper sonic filth. "2 Stroke" reminds us of Audio's funkier side as a scattergun bassline flickers off-and-on the kicks with trippy effect. Rumour has it he's going to drop his fifth album pretty soon... His first since signing to Ram, we can't wait to hear it.

  3. Hornsey Dub (5:45)
Review: With previous on Program and Spearhead, Battery now take another bold leap and make their Metalheadz debut. Three tracks deep, each one showcasing their stark, spacious sound. "NoNo" is a 150mph drive down country lanes blindfolded. No escape, no surrender, no seatbelt. "Air" is slightly deeper with more of a human element thanks to subtle vocal touches from Rumour. Finally we hit "Hornsey Dub", a heads down roller laced with dense drum textures, tight edits and sneering toxic sub. Killer label debut and definite radar-lockers for 2016 hype.

Syncopy (12")
Cat: TEAL 003. Rel: 01 Aug 11
  1. Syncopy
  2. Syncopy (Blawan's Tragt Mechanik mix)
Review: Fledgling Danish label Teal continue their mission statement to release interesting music regardless of genre. Their third release sees them turn to fellow Copenhagen resident Tobias Pedersen, who operates under the mysterious Beastie Respond moniker. "Syncopy" will draw obvious comparisons with Non Plus figureheads Instra:mental for its clear deviations into the slower, deep, mind altering end of the drum and bass spectrum. Amidst the sparse, crackling array of percussive rhythms and devious industrial textures there's a dubby warmth to the swing that adds a unique touch, whilst the overall tone sits just the right side of melancholia. Further kudos is awarded to Teal for enlisting Blawan to remix the track, with the R&S/Hessle lynchpin naturally embellishing proceedings with his own devious array of layered drum sounds whilst dragging the source material down a decidedly darker sonic corridor. Big tip!

  1. Brain Crisis - "Hands Up"
  2. Teddy Killerz & Brain Crisis - "Local 2"
Review: Having made his Subtitles bow on last year's crucial Sine Language label compilation, rising Russian producer Brain Crisis gets another chance to show why TeeBee has tipped him to succeed this year with a full 12" release. Listening to the fractured robotic futurism of A Side track "Hands Up", it's easy to see why TeeBee claimed Pavel Khudyakov's work as Brain Crisis sounded 'like aliens mining a colony out of metal'. The epitome of a modern day rude bwoy skanker, "Hands Up" is minimal, razor sharp and will be deadly in the right hands. The B Side offers a chance to see how Khudyakov fares when collaborating, with "Local 2" a fine slab of post apocalyptic dark side pressure executed with the assistance of the Teddy Killers trio.

Review: Break's long-awaited third album is getting closer and closer by the sampler. We don't need to the hype it; the word couplet of Break and album is self-hyping enough to all who know their D&B. We don't even need to hype these tracks; "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush "Love So True" style reggae refrain before dropping into free-flowing rolling gold topped by Fats instantly distinctive harmonies. "Brand New" opens with heavenly chords before dropping into a deliciously rough and angular groove. Classic Break, both of these kill it on all corners. Bring on the album!

Review: What can we say about Break that hasn't already been said? This man is D&B mythology - every producer name checks, every DJ represents, every soldier on the dancefloor knows that Break equals neck-snapping quality of the highest order. Both tunes on this release are, it goes without saying, superb, but both come from different dark places. "Groove With it" is the stepper you want, "Soldier" is the heavy, bottomed-out, snare-flailing danger zone you need. Drum and bass for the connoisseur who still likes to get messed up when it suits. Beautiful.

Review: Five years have passed since Bristol-based beat-chiseller Break last dropped the A-bomb. The whole scene has changed hugely since then, but with his new LP Break is preparing to take us back to the days when only the groove (and some perfectly processed snares) mattered: The Kyo-fronted "Simpler Times" is a barbed soul roller with just the right amount of roughage while "Top Shooter" is a straight up slapper with deep rumbling subs and Break's gritty rhythm signature. Review: If you're not overjoyed by the release of new material from Break, you should have a quiet word with yourself. Yes, the man is a powerhouse and manages to share a seemingly endless supply of his own brand of break-laden tunes year after year; but that don't mean he burns out, it means he fires up. As the title suggests, Break Presents Symmetry Sessions 2 follows the inaugural edition from Symmetry that surfaced earlier this year and features surprising tunes like the foray into minimal desolation from Mako, and a fine collaboration between Break, NFM and HLZ in "Atlas Shrugged". The man himself lays down a killer lead track in the shape of the vicious jazz tech business of "Give It Up".

Review: It's been a long time coming, but Breakage's third album has finally landed! And, as with his previous album Foundation, it's a multi-genre affair that taps deep into all the murkiest corners of the UK dance music psyche. Deep dark rollers, both "Natty" and "I On U" remind us of Breakage's jungle roots. "Dedication", meanwhile, drops the tempo a smidgeon for a steppy serenade to the past that's wrapped up all nice and cosy with synths that are highly reminiscent of Newcleus's "Jam On It". The final stage of this album sampler takes us to a whole new world where Breakage's synths carry us round the stars like flying carpets and Liam Bailey's vocals strap us in tightly. And if you're feeling these, check the whole album.

Powerful chords, minimal dynamics and an emphatic vocal that seeps genuine sentiment, it's strong enough to get the biggest non-smokers in the dance raising lighters they didn't even know they had. For added guts flip for Breakage's very own VIP. Old school breakbeats a-go-go; this will slice a roof clean off any venue on the planet. Massive.

Where the original was all warm and deeply textured, Solo has flipped the dynamics for something a lot sharper and harder hitting. Saturated in sunshine stabs with really nice attention to paid on the backing vocal harmonies, it's yet another skank-scud. Killer!

Not Your Idol EP (double 12")
Cat: HWARE 035. Rel: 20 Jul 15
  1. BTK & Cold Fusion - "Not Your Idol" (5:31)
  2. Battery - "Essence" (6:07)
  3. Loxy & Resound - "The Hour" (6:06)
  4. NC-17 - "Jet Lagged" (5:21)
Review: Techstep pioneers Renegade are set to shut up shop next year, so make the most of these final releases... Four tracks heavy, this EP sums up every reason Renegade has developed such a strong reputation in the game: BTK & Cold Fusion show us how vocals can be done in a big way without sounding cheesy on "Not Your Idol" while Battery (Craggs and Parallel's new project) is a joy ride straight back to 1994 in a 2025-built car. Loxy & Resound switch up their dubbier motifs for something much harder and darker but still ultimately lean and sinewy and finally NC-17 closes the show with a firing slice of nasty. With a fine-tuned Reece that whistles like a wasp, this could have been dropped at any Renegade party over the last 15 years and would guarantee a rewind each and every time.
