Gespielt von: Adesse Versions
Review: Adesse Versions returns to Numbers, following the runaway success of last year's Pride 12". "That's What Friends Are For" is a sturdy late-night builder, with the German producer gradually ratcheting up the tension via sleazy, spoken word vocals, carefully placed effects, and a muscular, Sound Factory style groove. The latter gets more space to breathe on the accompanying dub. Flip for the deeper, breezier "In The Sticks", which adds African percussion to a Ron Trent and Chez Damier-style house groove. The Afro influences and shimmering chords take pride of place on the alternative "No Kicks" mix.

  3. Kinda Late (5:37)
Review: Last year, Bastien Carrara joined forces with Rawthenticity boss Fulbert on Mont Cenis Tapes 01, a cassette of collaborative explorations in the experimental end of dusty deep house. This outing for Funkineven's Apron imprint marks his solo debut, and it's something of an action-packed hit. A-side "Summer Breeze" is something of a slammer, with dreamy pads and swirling synthesizer chords riding a thumping, distorted drum machine groove. "Diskother" sees him change tack to deliver a loved-up, pitched-down instrumental '80s soul edit, before he brings out the drum machines once more on the tactile, late night oddness of leftfield deep house gem "Kinda Late".

  3. Nachtbreaker - "Totally Not Mistique" (7:07)
  4. Gnork - "Chord Tool" (5:26)
Review: Quartet Series is a fresh imprint based between Milan and Amsterdam and run by Nachtbraker and KiSk. Inaugurating their new label is Crackazat (from Uppsala, Sweden) with his 80's pop- house excursion "Lindop Circles" (which is so lovably cheesy) and Saine with the deep and sexy slo-mo disco of "Prime Chops". On the flip there's also Nachtbreaker himself with "Totally Not Mystique" (which sounds like an outtake from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack) and Gnork with "Chord Tool" which sounds like early Underground Resistance or 808 State.

  3. Kabusawki (9:11)
Gespielt von: Lamache
Review: Thilo Dietrich hails from Kaub in Germany's West-Rhine region and appears for the third instalment on Pager entitled The Saga Of Bennos T.S. For the Offenbach/Frankfurt based record label run by Markus Sommer & Phil Evans. On the first side "Caria Marey" is bleepy tech house that rolls deep while "The Great Sventon (Bob Harley Road mix)" is glitchy minimal funk that's perfect for paranoid afterhours gatherings and reminiscent of early Minibar releases. Finally on the flip we've got "Kabusawki" which is definitely the most advanced and well executed production. The trippy and bumpin' groove on this is absolutely wicked and is a must for fans of quirky grooves like that of Perlon or Boogizm.

Review: Here's a pleasant surprise! Jimmy Billingham bringing his distinct brand of drawn out, emotive acid as HOLOVR to the good ship Firecracker. HOLOVR has largely been restricted to the digital or cassette format, yet last year's Line Of Flight LP for Billingham's own Indole label proved what we always thought; it's music you want to hear booming out of a pair of turntables in a club! The Trace Realm EP, another thing of visual beauty thanks to House of Traps, continues in this vein with opening track "Transient Field" a real highlight along with the spoken word-blessed lysergic drift of closing track "Corporeal Crust (Cthelll Core)".

Review: There's a lot of hype around this mysterious release played out by the likes of Four Tet and those that matter in the UK. "Feelings" by Mainline is not just a jacking anthem but an all-round Zeitgeist for Windy City retroverts. From the warm and soulful character of the machines through to its dusty and saturated recording in the vein of classics like "House Nation" or "You Used To Hold Me" et al. This is so sublime! The dub on the flip strips things back and extends the groove perfectly creating a brilliantly effective tool.

Review: Harry Agius aka Midland is back: does he ever find time to sleep? Following up the Akase side project he's involved in with Robbie Redway and some killer releases on Aus Music, Feel My Bicep and of course his own Graded imprint which this appears on; making it the label's third release already. "Blush" is a slow burning and emotive piece with an epic vintage synth arpeggio and soulful strings backed by the most restrained beat. "Outpost" gets a bit more fierce with a tougher beat and a free running arpeggio that reeks havoc much like Carl Craig's classic remix of "Falling Up". Finally "Holdup" hammers the message home gloriously with its off kilter yet hypnotic beat and sombre yet emotive atmosphere.

RAD AN1 (hand-stamped 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: RAD AN1. Rel: 09 May 16
  1. Ill Still
  2. Faceless
  3. I Don't See Them
Review: **Repress** Young Anthony Naples is given the prestigious honour of the first 12" from a new label set up by the champs at Rubadub. The Glaswegian record shop and distribution network claim it's going to be an irregular affair, but if all the releases are going to be this good there'll be some clamour for a more consistent release schedule that's for sure. Arriving shortly after that killer release for The Trilogy Tapes, the RAD AN1 12" demonstrates once again how easy Naples seems to find crafting diverse approaches to the house music template. "Ill Still" will suck many people in, a gloriously upbeat combination of shimmering, warbled chords cemented by a walloping kickdrum, whilst "Faceless" is all about the sick little edits Naples employs to break up the blissful pianos and relentless drums. The flip is given to "I Don't See Them" a churning, dubby 8 minute excursion through dark, Detroit leaning house that lends some notable menace to balance out the blissful nature of what precedes it.

Review: New kids on the block Regelbau are said to be 11 guys from Aarhus, Denmark. Playing records and hosting parties. We're not sure which of them exactly is responsible for this great release and we don't really care; just keep it coming! "Track 1" has a swing fuelled, almost hip-house beat with some sampled harpsichords over the top.. which is curious to say the least. The breakbeats continue on "Track 2" where the drummer gets wicked beneath some female vocal rhyming and dreamy pads. Finally on the flip is "Track 3" which is the best offering, referencing the very best of the Windy City circa '91 with its emotive and bittersweet bump and shuffle.

  3. Mortal Trance (Ricardo Miranda Mortal Trance rerub) (6:28)
Review: "Mortal Trance" by Windy City legend Boo Williams was originally released on the Residual EP back in 2010 but gets some killer remixes now. They'd best be decent, because the original is a right classic! But rest assured, they do not disappoint. Local legend Jordan Fields' "Spacedub redit" doesn't deviate from the original too much thankfully. The man himself turns in the "Chicago Running Remix". We originally thought if it ain't broke, don't fix it but this version is pretty sweet, injecting a bit more energy and swing into it quite nicely. Finally the "Ricardo Miranda Mortal Trance rerub" sees another stalwart of the scene show off his vision of the track which applies more layers and complexity to it on this decent rendition.

Cat: CLOSER 006. Rel: 09 May 16
  1. Spring Theory (Moomin rework) (6:44)
  2. Spring Theory (Tristen rework) (8:10)
Review: Acasual's "Spring Theory" has already been retouched twice before, once by deep house wizard Move D, and then again by the ever-impressive, always on-point Luv Jam. This time, however, we enter a more tech-themed realm starting with Moomin's own rework, a slick and lean percussion machine that keeps on pushing forwards with its dusty beats and dark room melodies. Tristen takes care of the second remix over on the flip, and the man trips the entire groove down to leave a wide-eyed, cinematic plateau of loose percussion twists, FX-heavy sonics and an altogether dreamy kinda vibe.

  4. Mome - "Assatta"
Review: It's always unwise to judge a label that's still taking its' first steps, but Banoffee Pies has barely put a foot wrong since launching a couple of years back. Here, the Bristol-based imprint continues with its' successful split release formula, gathering together a quartet of tracks from up-and-coming producers. Beaner kicks things off with the bumpin', low-slung deep house grooves and delay-laden guitar samples of "It Takes Two", before Philou Louzolo raises the temperature with the looped horn samples and thumping beats of "Alter Ego". Flip for the dreamy Balearic house goodness of Ron Wilson's "Albino Turtle", and the bongo-laden, after-party deep house shuffle of Mome's "Assatta".

  3. Benefit (feat Omar) (4:57)
  4. Fighting Spirit (7:24)
Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

Beasts From Below (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMM 043. Rel: 09 May 16
  1. Underworld
  2. Immortal Melody
  3. Hydras Dance
Review: HYDRAFUNK is an exciting Detroit Techno inspired collaboration between Immigrant Records owner and label manager Robin Porter and US analogue synth guru Mike Carr. The duo first collaborated back in 2002 releasing the 'Mental Stealth EP' on Immigrant, featuring the bassline and synth heavy 'Fathernature', a track that found it's way on 'Evil' Eddie Richard's Fabric 16 mix CD and is currently being remixed for the upcoming 'Immigrant Icons' vinyl remix series by the scene's golden child - 'Subb-an.' Their debut three track EP, 'Beasts From Below', fuses the analogue aptitude of Mike Carr and Robin Porter's attention to sound frequency, arrangement detail and understanding of the dance floor, delivering an intoxicating peak time package of delight. The A1 track entitled 'Underworld' is a deep journey of melodic synth work and chugging groove that travels into dark territories, complimented by uplifting percussion that builds into a peak time beast from the deep. On the flip side, the B1 track entitled 'Immortal Melody' delves even further into moody territory delivering a tantalising array of dreamy synths and jackin' old school percussion, that submerges into an abyss of texture before rising up into a dance floor banger. The inside B2 cut entitled 'Hydra's Dance' is definitely not a token bonus track and is the most dance floor friendly cut; featuring Robin's knack for creating powerful basslines, unique vocals and Mike's ability to create depth and texture with his analogue synth programming. With another HYDRAFUNK EP almost at the pressing plant and an 'Immigrant Icon's remix EP underway, the duo will be leading the charge to push Immigrant back into the Techno and House limelight in 2016 and beyond with their underworld funk.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: As an artist Earl is first and foremost a digger and a selector, crafting sets that meander through the realms of Soul, Boogie, House and far-flung rarities but his ear and aptitude for knowing what the dance floor wants is seamlessly translated to his dynamic output as a producer. This time around the ever-impressive Earl Jeffers launches his own imprint, Melange, with a groove-laden three-track EP 'The Goose'. Earl delivers a lucid dreamlike cut for the new original in the package, 'Bridge Street Groove', which sit's harmoniously alongside the critically acclaimed re-presses of 'The Goose' and 'Let It Out' to form another blistering collection from the Welsh native.

S.A.M., the Danish Oscillat/Delaphine favourite appears on the remix fresh from delivering a slew of killer originals and remixes as well as his most recent Mandar collaboration with Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie. On this Reshape, he is at his most sublime best delivering an emotive retake on the original that stretches heady organs and melodies alongside a beat that refuses to let up.
