Review: Hello is the serious burns unit? Yes it's Juno Records here, we've been in direct contact with J Kenzo's latest Artikal 12" and have lost several layers of skin. Get an ambulance right away you say? Just after we've listened to this a few more times... "Battlefield" twitches a ruddy sub that bounces around beneath big system horns and a strident energetic drum groove. "Zbantu Shake" is a much more stripped back stepper that's all wooden kicks, trippy flute flurries and ladles of thick treacle subs. Soundboy killing material.

  1. I'm From The Balkans (2:05)

  3. Uck Foff (4:41)
Review: It's been a strong year for Balkan badman Egoless who pulled in a whole new field of ears with his insanely on-point ska cover of Benga & Coki's "Night". "I'm From The Bakans" is a great showcase of his leftfield weight. The title track is an ardent reminder that we still have heaps of room to experiment in drums and textures with rhythm combinations that sound like no other. "Psychonautilus" is powered by creepy dreams. All wonky, foggy and freaky - if Nicolas Jaar did dub, he wouldn't sound too far from this. "Uck Foff" keeps us in the dense mists as thick atmospheres are broken but a strangely shuffling beat and unpredictable mechanical bass tones. No one is doing it like Egoless.

Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since the gully Frenchman we know and love as Monsieur Von D shared an exceptional release with Egoless and already he's back. This time he's on Infernal Sounds, which is already proof of its quality - considering how selective and detail-oriented the label have been since launching two years ago. "Cross Of Hendaye" is a solid mechanical roller with heaps of human funk coded into the waspy bassline. "Remember" is a straight up homage to the early days with a sub that palpitates so heavily and tangibly your own heartbeat will sync within seconds. True to the craft.

Review: When it comes to dubstep, Distance (AKA DJ/producer Greg Sanders) has pretty much done it all. Since making his debut in 2003, he's released two fine albums on Planet Mu, mixed a volume of the Dubstep Allstars series, and laid down a string of killer 12" singles. With this history in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that Dynamis, his first full-length for Tectonic, sees him look further afield or inspiration. While heavyweight sub-bass and the rhythmic swagger of dubstep remain at the heart of his productions, the album also incorporates elements of dubstep, experimental electronica, IDM, electro, ambient, and even Nine Inch Nails style fuzz-rock intensity.

Review: Truth continue to develop their DDD imprint with deeper melodic and sonic investigations "Smoke" says it all. Total soul with singed edges, Animal's sultry vocals ooze with a subtle jazz flow; it's Truth's boldest (and sexiest) composition to date. "Tunnel Vision" takes us deeper into the dance with an infectious hooky percussive riff and thundering subs while "Devil's Game" is an eight-minute epic that comprises moments of delicate drama and absolute raw bass power. Without question, the best release on their label so far. Perhaps their best release full stop.

Review: New Zealand duo Truth have been irregular contributors to the Deep Medi cause since their debut on Mala's label back in 2009. In this time, Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake have spread the Truth gospel for dubstep heads with further releases on Firepower, Tempa, Boka and more. War Of The Minds sees Truth back on Deep Medi for the duo's first 12" of 2016 replete with some eye-catching cover art from m7grafiks. From the opening sub heave and lolloping rollage of "Jade Helm" you can tell Fernandez and Roake made these cuts with Deep Medi in mind, honing in successfully on a very specific mood. The brute force bass of "With Us" and the Werd2Jag guesting title cut are the pick here.

Review: From Cuba, Mala heads south for another mystic adventure in international cross-pollination on Mirrors, the Deep Medi man's latest LP-length bubbler for Brownswood. Fusing inspirations, energies, talents and techniques from Peru - and working with some of the country's most respected musicians - it's another immersive body of work that genuinely sounds like no other. From the pensive tribal march of "Cusco Street Scene" to the shimmering twangs and dusty, languid claps of "Zapateo" by way of demented insistency of "Looney" and the muddy cosmic textures of "The Calling", Mala has once again immersed himself so deeply into a culture and musical discourse that he not only speaks it fluently but has added to its rich vernacular. Vinyl was invented for albums like this.

Review: Now spread across a double-pack for full appreciation of the spread of ideas that come popping out of this collection, KMS's remix album was long overdue a vinyl release. Whether it be the intense heartbreak of dBridge's take on "Without You", or the beat science of T++ ripping down "Miles And Miles", there's something here for everyone who likes leftfield electronics. Cooly G especially shines with her re-voicing of "Spin Me Around", not least when the rockabilly dread of the guitar comes in towards the end. What shines through is the tension of the original album, looming oppressively over the new versions in magnificent fashion.

  1. Sweetz (7:08)
Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

Review: Swedish dub soldier LAS returns to Innamind with two skin-singeing smoke-stackers. All foggy and dense, both "Gunfam" and "This Morning" hit with real weight and mysticism. The former comes with more of dancefloor edge due to its slight skip in the kicks and a gangster hook. The latter, as the name suggests, is total sunrise material thanks to its evocative chords, trembling synths and sense of restraint. This one's a percy.

If you're looking for modern fusion with an electronic sensibility then look no further because these guys are the *%@*! A whopping twelve tracks long, the LP contains a lilttle bit of everything from gnarly break-ridden grooves like "Awakening", to choppy half-step tunes such as "City Lights", and all tied up in a warm r&b coating. Every track on here could be a hit, so which one's for you?

  1. Yrs Ago (6:50)
  2. Animus (4:59)
Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Review: Amit's AMAR imprint continues its consistent run of fresh 140 form with New Zealand dub-wiser Akcept. Easing us in with crisp keys, we're soon introduced to his spacious sense of groove and lean instrumentation as "Peace Pipe" lurks and lingers before a lavish horn sample hits midway. "The Streets" takes us further down Akcept's melodic rabbit hole as Clinton Sly spits and sermons over a more colourful version of the riddim. "Insight" takes the prize for heaviest dancefloor cut with a bouncing sub line that tramples with abandon beneath a flow of dubby FX and textures. Playful but ultimately deep and dark, these guys aren't mucking around.

Naturally he's smashed it: "Too Much Terror" is a molten machine of funk and sci-fi signature whole "Bwoy" lowers the tempo temperature with a dancehall-inspired drum arrangement and dubby vocal textures. Both direct for the dance.

Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: Confession time... Kaiju's slick, innovative consistency is translated into album form with a concept that actually works. Seven sins, seven tracks - each one resembling their title in one way or another. "Envy" sees Jack Gates pouring out his heart, "Greed" groans and croaks like the last man standing at a banquet battle while the gully-grunting "Pride" struts with its head held so high it's almost in the clouds. "Sloth", as you'd expect, is a much slower, spacier, deeper creeper with cavernous room around each percussive element while "Gluttony" shows off the duo's ability by squeezing in almost too many ideas and fresh textures. Finally, "Wrath" lashes out with hard-hitting snare vengeance and "Lust" brings the show to a sweet, soft-focus close with Riya and Total Science providing the perfect deep dream textures. Sinfully good.

Review: Compa hails from Manchester, but his productions and his sound are quite deeply imbedded into London's rich dubstep dynasty. The young bass wizard is back on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik, starting off with the murky stepper riddim called "Truth In Sound", a wreckage of beats and sonics that is dissolved by the mutant waves of "Noctule". "Tibetan Chant" is more of a tribal dance ritual to the Gods, and "Four Four Claps" turns things nastier and away from the deeper waters that we're used to hearing Compa sail on.

Review: Mala's album project comes to light with a healthy amount of expectation. The DMZ / Deep Medi Musik main man has always carried a reverence amongst the dubstep scene for his unfussy approach, staying true to the sound he helped forge in the nascent days of the genre while avoiding over-exposure or buckling to hype and trend where so many of his peers succumbed to change. As such this project sees the man well outside of his comfort zone as he tackles a specific album project whilst sticking his head more clearly overground to work with Gilles Peterson on an adventure in Cuba working with local musicians. This is most definitely Mala's music, and the spiritual, tribal nature of his productions to date only gets enhanced by the influx of Cuban folk sounds. This is no simple case of ripping samples and dropping them for token effect though; the percussive patterns and licks of piano, guitar, horns and voice are completely interwoven into the South London pressure as if they were always meant to be. It's testament to the pure approach Mala takes in the studio that he manages to balance these unlikely bedfellows to such fluid effect. Undoubtedly there will be naysayers who will argue that in doing an album of this nature Mala is diluting his purist vision for dubstep, but in truth the approach and end results he has managed to conjure up bring a revitalising, fresh angle to the genre, which is what it needs in abundance. There's maybe a lack of the "shock of the new" factor as Cubano music is not exactly a stranger to UK dance music forms, and Mala isn't exactly switching his own stance too drastically, but ultimately that doesn't matter. The whole album is direct and immensely satisfying to listen to, capturing the alluring spirit of South American folk tradition and empowering it with the transcendental nature of dubstep in its finest form

Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world marks his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Review: It's a house-grime marriage on Bristol's Black Acrel label, from newfound dup Wallwork and Nico Lindsay, the latter of the two bringing the vocal street swagger to the beats. The title track "Facts" is a big, bad, heavy slab of percussion and bass powered by Lindsay's curbside lyricism, and it's one of those tunes that's bound to get shit tarted in the dance. This is followed by the more kinetic flow of "Fyah", where Lindsay's vocals are more minimal than its predecessor, and its rough and rugged instrumental for maximum DJ damage. Another banging addition to the Black Acrew crew - yes!

You trust a veteran like Ledge to deliver the goods here like he does on "Underground Railroad" with its immaculately programmed industrial percussion textures hammering away backed by chilling atmospheres and powerful bass pulsations. After first premiering on Youngsta's Rinse FM show over a year ago, we're glad this finally saw the light of day.

Review: One of Tempa's most consistent and exciting artists to join the label roster in recent years, Nomine's fusions defy categorisation. We've watched his murky world unravel over the course of EPs... But nothing could compare us for the complex web he's weaved on his debut album. The off-beat percussive textured groove of "84600", the pitched drum riff on "Stickman" and the slinky-but-snakelike rhythm on "Menacer" are just three of the eight delights on offer here. Tempa are having a fine year and Inside Nomine may be their crowning glory of 2015.

Review: Scholars of UK bass culture will know just how much of an integral role Horsepower Productions played in the formation of dubstep, teasing darker strains of sub-bass into garage at the turn of the century. Four years on from their last album, dubstep pioneers Horsepower Productions are back with a new LP called Crooks, Crime & Corruption. Issued through the good ship Tempa, Crooks, Crime & Corruption sees Benny Ill and company allow a certain amount of light to shine through but this is still resolutely Horsepower. 2011 tracks "Good Ole Dayz" and "Justify" both feature here in newly reworked format, with Horsepower also seeking out contributions from Berlin producer Orson and vocalist Harry Keyworth.

Review: Undisputed godfathers of UK dubstep Horsepower Productions are back with another full length; their first in 12 years since 2004's To The Rescue LP. As Tempa themselves put it succinctly: "Crooks, Crime & Corruption" draws from numerous facets of the UK underground and further afield in order to take you on a compelling, wholly immersive journey. Highlights include "Justify" featuring Harry Keyworth which sounds like Jah Wobble versus Ry Cooder, the deep spiritual house of "Bak 2 NY" or "Kurisoity 6" and the business as usual, street level bass therapy as heard on the raw "Change" or the pure fire junglist anthem "Criminally Insane".

Review: Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has already appeared on perhaps the biggest dubstep labels around, and he made his name from the string of releases on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik - not exactly a bad place to start your career, that's for sure. However, he's now branching out to other quality households, and this new LP on Black Acre feels just right in every single way. Right because his deep, brooding sound fits ever so well with the rest of the label, and right because How What Time flows perfectly as an album unit. There are three tunes on each side of the two slabs of wav, and they work as perfect, tidy trios that carry the same sort of leftward bass sound, one that never goes to deep as to become abstract, but also never gets too violent as to become silly. All in all, it is masterfully executed dubstep for the 2016 palate. Killer.

Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

Review: Nine years deep and still sounding as future as ever, Kode9 and The Spaceape's first album is historic in so many different directions... It's the first ever Hyperdub album, Kode9's sonic scope and barbed soundscapes and Spaceape's paranoid poetry and rhythmic narratives complement and tailor each other in a way no other dubstep-related producer and MC have ever sounded (before and since), the beats remain a unique, diverse, creative dynamic almost a decade later... And, sadly, the late Spaceape's stories now come laden with added portent poignancy. All proceeds from this reissue go to Stephen Samuel Gordon's family; if you haven't got this on vinyl you know what to do.

Review: Having previously set out his stall via a series of well-received singles on Tempa, Wheel & Deal, Osiris Music, Cold Recordings and Boka Records, Jack Gibbons' has finally got round to producing a debut album under his now-familiar Ipman alias. Pleasingly, Depatterning is a thrill-a-minute set with a genuine sense of purpose. Taking heavy, surging sub-basslines as his foundation, Gibbons gleefully lays down a range of tracks that giddily joins the dots between post-dubstep rhythms, early British hardcore, classic jungle, fuzzy 4/4 grooves, IDM, mutant two-step and ambient. Throughout, he retains the perfect balance between redlined funk, crackling soundscapes and the melodiousness of vintage electronica.

We can't overstate how integral this compilation was to the early days of dubstep, tracks like Loefah's "System" or "Bahl FWD" from Skream have undoubtedly grown to define the era! Looking to mark the occasion Tectonic have elected to grant Tectonic Plates Vol. 1 a ten year anniversary double-vinyl edition - hooray we say! Also included is the dubplate heavy mix CD from Pinch with some of the twenty tracks still remaining unreleased to this day.

Review: Otherwise known as Rob McAndrews, former James Blake collaborator Airhead is fast becoming one of the most interesting producers on the R&S roster since Blake's movement to more mainstream concerns. Taking a more explicitly rhythmic direction than previous release which concentrated on lush acoustic textures, "Pyramid Lake" combines rapidfire percussion, breathy vocal samples and lo-fi VHS textures to create the most unlikely club banger you'll hear this year. "Black Ink" meanwhile sounds like a maelstrom of kickdrums tumbling up and down a rubber staircase with stray hi-hats and handclaps thrown into the mix. Undeniably one of the best R&S cuts this year.

Review: Version session: Nice Up! return to a summer bubbler from 2015 courtesy of Greece's Blend Mishkin and US's Roots Evolution by way of Compa's Manchester laboratory. Bussing up the groove into something much chunkier, rolling and heavyweight, Compa celebrates the elements of the original by bringing them into the fore over a deep rumbling groove that ploughs with modern dub momentum and opens into the vocal with precision timing. Naturally there's a dub to play with, too. Compa's on a roll right now.

"Wildfire" see-saws on a pivot-like atonal riff over a lolloping sub/kick flow and big splash rimshots while "Lintumies" is a spacier jam where stretched outer-space aesthetics play games with your head and the bass keeps kicking you out of orbit.

Nice work Innamind! This time it's a double pack affair brandishing a weighty five productions, three of which are straight up collaborations between the Innamind mainstays. As you'd expect it's a heavily atmospheric affair throughout with the rattling percussive drama of "Drumspeak" the highlight of Las and Mikael's joint efforts, whilst the former's solo cut "Farout" may be the best example of what we like to call drunkstep.

Review: Having been a fixture in the LA beat scene for a long time, the past few years and an association with Brainfeeder have seen Matthewdavid hit a strong flurry of productivity of late, and this long player simply adds to the tumble of fractured soul, lopsided hip hop and swooning balladry. There's a cheeky cover of Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" woven into the slow jam funk of "Perpetual Moon Moods" while elsewhere "Next To You Always" finds Matthewdavid dropping a limber but tongue-in-cheek lyrical flow. With a dizzying array of ideas and moods bouncing the listener around his labyrinthe musical mind, the leftfield LA crooner has once again flouted convention while sugaring the pill to perfection.

Review: Ninja Tune offshoot Counter has described Alium, Submotion Orchestra's third full-length, as "bigger, bolder and brighter" than previous offerings. It's true that the Leeds-based seven-piece are in fine form, with the string-drenched, early-evening-at-a-festival feel of their more downtempo offerings (highlighted by the fragile, folksy vocals of Ruby Turner) off-set by a selection of tracks that draw more deeply on dubstep, dancefloor jazz, soul and surging electronica influences. As a result, Alium bobs and weaves attractively, mixing lighters-aloft torch songs with more immersive, grandiose efforts guaranteed to get feet moving and lips quivering out on the dancefloor.

Review: Time for some proper, authentic dubstep: District returns to Chestplate with two straight up slabs of bass power. "Drowsy" starts with a slouchy funk to the beat before dropping into a fat, fuzzy 2008 bassline that refuses to hold back its playfulness.
