Review: New Zealand duo Truth have been irregular contributors to the Deep Medi cause since their debut on Mala's label back in 2009. In this time, Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake have spread the Truth gospel for dubstep heads with further releases on Firepower, Tempa, Boka and more. War Of The Minds sees Truth back on Deep Medi for the duo's first 12" of 2016 replete with some eye-catching cover art from m7grafiks. From the opening sub heave and lolloping rollage of "Jade Helm" you can tell Fernandez and Roake made these cuts with Deep Medi in mind, honing in successfully on a very specific mood. The brute force bass of "With Us" and the Werd2Jag guesting title cut are the pick here.

Review: Seven years have passed since Burial first stopped us dead in our tracks with this universally acclaimed second album.. Sounding so different, so removed and far away from anything else, it changed the game entirely - and created a whole school of imitators in its wake. Now repressed by Hyperdub, this is a rare opportunity to grab it on fresh wax. Even if you have this on other formats in your collection, the dusty weight and chasmic crackles sound so much better on vinyl.

Cat: BLACKLIST 005. Rel: 16 May 16
  1. Space Horror (5:36)
  2. Step On Lava (3:59)
Review: Blacklist hit release number five and it's the label bossman doing what he does best: taking us down dark paths on twisted, subverted adventures we didn't even know existed. "Space Horror" bundles us into the boot of a rusty old rocket and speeds down the backstreets of Omicron Persei 8 where the drums slouch along the slimy alleys and bassline groan and fall out of dark corners. "Walk On Lava" sees us being chucked out of the spaceship from a great height into the eye of a volcano. With blistering kicks and a tense acid line, will we make it out on time or will our geese get cooked? There's only way to find out...

  3. Tibetan Chant (5:42)
  4. Four Four Claps (6:02)
Review: Compa hails from Manchester, but his productions and his sound are quite deeply imbedded into London's rich dubstep dynasty. The young bass wizard is back on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik, starting off with the murky stepper riddim called "Truth In Sound", a wreckage of beats and sonics that is dissolved by the mutant waves of "Noctule". "Tibetan Chant" is more of a tribal dance ritual to the Gods, and "Four Four Claps" turns things nastier and away from the deeper waters that we're used to hearing Compa sail on.

Review: Undisputed godfathers of UK dubstep Horsepower Productions are back with another full length; their first in 12 years since 2004's To The Rescue LP. As Tempa themselves put it succinctly: "Crooks, Crime & Corruption" draws from numerous facets of the UK underground and further afield in order to take you on a compelling, wholly immersive journey. Highlights include "Justify" featuring Harry Keyworth which sounds like Jah Wobble versus Ry Cooder, the deep spiritual house of "Bak 2 NY" or "Kurisoity 6" and the business as usual, street level bass therapy as heard on the raw "Change" or the pure fire junglist anthem "Criminally Insane".

Review: Kiwi bass head Epoch usually likes to dish out new material through his own Egyptian Avenue imprint, but he's been called up to serve his duties on Blacklist, and who could blame him for delivering the goods? Badminded, categorised on our system as 'deep dubstep', should actually be seen as the doorway between, or rather the key, between the distant planes that are electronica, new age and dubstep. Right, so we know what you're thinking, that's weird, right? But if you listen to the depth and richness of these eight slices of brain dynamite, you'll surely agree with us that Epoch's music goes way beyond the tight barriers of dubstep, and lands the listener into a wholly new sort of planet. You have to give it a go for yourself, what we can say is that it's warmly recommended.

Review: When it comes to deep dubby halftime, few labels are as reliable, forward-thinking or exciting as Amit's Amar. Here we find the label boss giving Scrilla the keys to last summer's hummer "Fatty Batty". Adding more melodic layers and cool double-ups on the kicks, Danny's turned in the perfect remix that pays respect to the original while taking it further into pastures unknown. Flip for "Lighter", a straight up dubwise joint with a kick so steady, reliable and dependable it could give you a reference for a mortgage. Serious.

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Mala's album project comes to light with a healthy amount of expectation. The DMZ / Deep Medi Musik main man has always carried a reverence amongst the dubstep scene for his unfussy approach, staying true to the sound he helped forge in the nascent days of the genre while avoiding over-exposure or buckling to hype and trend where so many of his peers succumbed to change. As such this project sees the man well outside of his comfort zone as he tackles a specific album project whilst sticking his head more clearly overground to work with Gilles Peterson on an adventure in Cuba working with local musicians. This is most definitely Mala's music, and the spiritual, tribal nature of his productions to date only gets enhanced by the influx of Cuban folk sounds. This is no simple case of ripping samples and dropping them for token effect though; the percussive patterns and licks of piano, guitar, horns and voice are completely interwoven into the South London pressure as if they were always meant to be. It's testament to the pure approach Mala takes in the studio that he manages to balance these unlikely bedfellows to such fluid effect. Undoubtedly there will be naysayers who will argue that in doing an album of this nature Mala is diluting his purist vision for dubstep, but in truth the approach and end results he has managed to conjure up bring a revitalising, fresh angle to the genre, which is what it needs in abundance. There's maybe a lack of the "shock of the new" factor as Cubano music is not exactly a stranger to UK dance music forms, and Mala isn't exactly switching his own stance too drastically, but ultimately that doesn't matter. The whole album is direct and immensely satisfying to listen to, capturing the alluring spirit of South American folk tradition and empowering it with the transcendental nature of dubstep in its finest form

Review: Scholars of UK bass culture will know just how much of an integral role Horsepower Productions played in the formation of dubstep, teasing darker strains of sub-bass into garage at the turn of the century. Four years on from their last album, dubstep pioneers Horsepower Productions are back with a new LP called Crooks, Crime & Corruption. Issued through the good ship Tempa, Crooks, Crime & Corruption sees Benny Ill and company allow a certain amount of light to shine through but this is still resolutely Horsepower. 2011 tracks "Good Ole Dayz" and "Justify" both feature here in newly reworked format, with Horsepower also seeking out contributions from Berlin producer Orson and vocalist Harry Keyworth.

Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

Review: Matt Karmil is an artist of many talents, and his adventures in sound have taken him across techno, disco, and even ambient explorations. He makes his return herein to Bristol's Idle Hands, coming through with a new album that spans just about all his skills, and can only be described as a musical mind drift - a sonic reverie, if you will. Throughout, we're presented with everything from glitchy, broken down hip hop, to shady shreds of house, and even odd and rhythmic blends of drone and Balearica. It's been on the office stereo all day here at Juno, and it might just be album of the week, in our opinion!

Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: Ex Pylon has remained one of the more mysterious figures within the realm of electronic music, with a trail of intrigue dating all the way back to the days gone by when Rupert Murdoch saw fit to splurge millions of pounds on MySpace. As is the way with the internet, a simple "hey guys check out my old Cornish buddy Ex Pylon" style blog post from Border Community poster boy Nathan Fake led to all manner of rumour and hearsay. Fast forward several years, it seems a happy coincidence that as the aforementioned Antipodean tycoon waves goodbye to MySpace and any notion of profit (he surely has bigger things on his plate at the moment) Ex Pylon deems fit to finally release his debut EP. Arriving on the fledgling yet already impressive Studio Barnhus imprint run by messrs Boman, Kovacs and Petter, quite why it's taken so long for Ex Pylon's debut to arrive isn't revealed and is likely to remain so.

Let's just be grateful to the Studio Barnhus crew for finally allowing the music buying/stealing (delete where appropriate) public a chance to indulge in the rewarding vision of techno Ex Pylon dabbles in. The title track "Hammerfest" opens proceedings in fine fashion, sprawling across A Side towards the run out groove in a sonic fashion not dissimilar to the arrangements that made up The Field's debut set for Kompakt a few years ago. Frosted synth lines compete with glitched out rhythms in shifting in and out of focus over stripped down drums, whilst the final ascent into the skies provides a potent end to a track which demands the needle be returned to the start. "Hoverfly" is equal in the use of glitchy rhythms, though the mood switches from euphoria to apprehension as the track digs deep into your senses with a dizzying array of kaleidoscopic alien textures burrowing far beneath the pattering layers of drums. Just when you think those textures will disappear completely, they surface to the fore with optimum speed over a snapping kick drum. It's a challenging but entirely engrossing listen. The final moments allow your senses to relax via the undulating beatless soundscapes of "Hupiter" - drawing on a multiplicity of soft melodic textures and cooing vocal samples with generally engrossing results.

Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world marks his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Review: Now spread across a double-pack for full appreciation of the spread of ideas that come popping out of this collection, KMS's remix album was long overdue a vinyl release. Whether it be the intense heartbreak of dBridge's take on "Without You", or the beat science of T++ ripping down "Miles And Miles", there's something here for everyone who likes leftfield electronics. Cooly G especially shines with her re-voicing of "Spin Me Around", not least when the rockabilly dread of the guitar comes in towards the end. What shines through is the tension of the original album, looming oppressively over the new versions in magnificent fashion.

Review: Nine years deep and still sounding as future as ever, Kode9 and The Spaceape's first album is historic in so many different directions... It's the first ever Hyperdub album, Kode9's sonic scope and barbed soundscapes and Spaceape's paranoid poetry and rhythmic narratives complement and tailor each other in a way no other dubstep-related producer and MC have ever sounded (before and since), the beats remain a unique, diverse, creative dynamic almost a decade later... And, sadly, the late Spaceape's stories now come laden with added portent poignancy. All proceeds from this reissue go to Stephen Samuel Gordon's family; if you haven't got this on vinyl you know what to do.

Review: *Burial Repress* The double header of Truant/Rough Sleeper is the second EP from Burial in 2012, and arrives with as little fanfare as the superb Kindred EP did early this year. Unlike that more dancefloor focused record however, this EP harks back to the producer's earlier sound. Of course, being two longform compositions clocking in at 12 and 14 minutes respectively, they're hardly conventional works; each utilises the same liberal use of spectral atmospheres, emotive vocal samples, hollow 2-step beats and nods to jungle as we've come to expect from the producer, but with complex structures that come across more like two sides of an old mixtape recorded from a pair of decrepit turntables. Of course being a mixtape from Burial, this is special stuff indeed - consider it an early Christmas present to yourself.

Review: Amid his current announcements that he will be playing house, techno and disco at all performances from now on, Ollie Jones unleashes the seventh instalment of previously unreleased material. Ranging from the sultry pop soul of the Kelis-fronted "Copy Cat" to the classic Croydon savagery of "Vacillate" and "Scrooge's Revenge", it's one of the broadest "Skreamizm" collections to date. For an idea of his new sonic ventures head for "Sticky": it's like Alter Ego but with grittier, more Londoncentric charms.

Review: Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has already appeared on perhaps the biggest dubstep labels around, and he made his name from the string of releases on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik - not exactly a bad place to start your career, that's for sure. However, he's now branching out to other quality households, and this new LP on Black Acre feels just right in every single way. Right because his deep, brooding sound fits ever so well with the rest of the label, and right because How What Time flows perfectly as an album unit. There are three tunes on each side of the two slabs of wav, and they work as perfect, tidy trios that carry the same sort of leftward bass sound, one that never goes to deep as to become abstract, but also never gets too violent as to become silly. All in all, it is masterfully executed dubstep for the 2016 palate. Killer.

Review: Having previously set out his stall via a series of well-received singles on Tempa, Wheel & Deal, Osiris Music, Cold Recordings and Boka Records, Jack Gibbons' has finally got round to producing a debut album under his now-familiar Ipman alias. Pleasingly, Depatterning is a thrill-a-minute set with a genuine sense of purpose. Taking heavy, surging sub-basslines as his foundation, Gibbons gleefully lays down a range of tracks that giddily joins the dots between post-dubstep rhythms, early British hardcore, classic jungle, fuzzy 4/4 grooves, IDM, mutant two-step and ambient. Throughout, he retains the perfect balance between redlined funk, crackling soundscapes and the melodiousness of vintage electronica.

Review: Innamind have done what everyone has been clamouring after the success of last year's Las x Mikael EP and locked the Finnish pair up in a studio and not let them out until they've laid down another clutch of heavyweight steppers. Nice work Innamind! This time it's a double pack affair brandishing a weighty five productions, three of which are straight up collaborations between the Innamind mainstays. As you'd expect it's a heavily atmospheric affair throughout with the rattling percussive drama of "Drumspeak" the highlight of Las and Mikael's joint efforts, whilst the former's solo cut "Farout" may be the best example of what we like to call drunkstep.

Review: Having been a fixture in the LA beat scene for a long time, the past few years and an association with Brainfeeder have seen Matthewdavid hit a strong flurry of productivity of late, and this long player simply adds to the tumble of fractured soul, lopsided hip hop and swooning balladry. There's a cheeky cover of Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" woven into the slow jam funk of "Perpetual Moon Moods" while elsewhere "Next To You Always" finds Matthewdavid dropping a limber but tongue-in-cheek lyrical flow. With a dizzying array of ideas and moods bouncing the listener around his labyrinthe musical mind, the leftfield LA crooner has once again flouted convention while sugaring the pill to perfection.

Gespielt von: Juno Recommends Bass
Review: With the long-awaited DJ Q album finally available, Local Action use the opportunity to sneak out this limited white label 12" featuring four exclusive reworks of the bassline don's "Trust Again" single. First up on the A-side is Texan grime producer Rabit, who overlays some punishing bass and fractured rhythms on top of a scrambled version of the original's pop melodies, and Glasgow-based Inkke, who offers a more dancefloor friendly grime-inspired re-rub which bodes very well for future Local Action Material from the producer later in the year. On the flip side, talented up and coming dubstep producer Compa provides a killer dubstep version which makes incredible use of the full vocal to create the kind of pop-dubstep track Magnetic Man wished they could have made, while Major Grave rounds things off with another killer grime flavoured version which combines a steppers rhythm with some seriously heavy bass. Although most remix EPs can be beset with duff moments, there isn't a single dud on here.

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

Review: Ninja Tune offshoot Counter has described Alium, Submotion Orchestra's third full-length, as "bigger, bolder and brighter" than previous offerings. It's true that the Leeds-based seven-piece are in fine form, with the string-drenched, early-evening-at-a-festival feel of their more downtempo offerings (highlighted by the fragile, folksy vocals of Ruby Turner) off-set by a selection of tracks that draw more deeply on dubstep, dancefloor jazz, soul and surging electronica influences. As a result, Alium bobs and weaves attractively, mixing lighters-aloft torch songs with more immersive, grandiose efforts guaranteed to get feet moving and lips quivering out on the dancefloor.

Review: Leeds' seven-piece outfit, Submotion Orchestra return with their third album after Finest Hour and Fragments! If you're looking for modern fusion with an electronic sensibility then look no further because these guys are the *%@*! A whopping twelve tracks long, the LP contains a lilttle bit of everything from gnarly break-ridden grooves like "Awakening", to choppy half-step tunes such as "City Lights", and all tied up in a warm r&b coating. Every track on here could be a hit, so which one's for you?

  1. Music Killer (extended mix)

Review: Music Killer is an appropriately titled second release from the almighty pairing of Pinch and Adrian Sherwood who are clearly enjoying bringing their respective and respected production talents to the table in a studio situation. Whilst the Bring Me Weed 12" released earlier this year was very good it felt a bit like Sherwood and Ellis were only just feeling out where the partnership could go, the two tracks here sound like the results of some extensive studio time for the pair. Having road tested the record on the Juno office stereo it has be said headphones or laptop speakers just don't do justice to the deeply trippy bass weight of "Music Killer" in either it's extended or dubplate pressure version. The former crunches through a 130+bpm riddim and is blessed with all manner of toasting whilst Sherwood is granted the space on the latter to lay down some typically mind-bending reverb and delay effects.

Review: One of the Estonian trio's most provocative tunes to date -and their only pure dubstep tune - here we find it under the knife of The Upbeats and Subzee D. The former eschew their D&B roots with a potty-mouthed halfstepper that pays complete respect to the original while adding a lot more texture and guttural groove to the gritty, scratchy bass hook. The latter flip vibes for a beat-heavy, tropical stomper that switches the bass into a much sharper, pensive hook. Both give the tongue-in-cheek track a whole new lease of life.

Hyped across the board (from deep heads to tear-out boys) as one of the key releases of 2014 so far, this sub-saturated swagger-jam has an ability to sing to all corners of the ever-fractured dubstep floor. Want to go deeper again? Head for "You Don't Belong Here". Wonkier than a wooden legged pirate with gout, it's peppered with spooked SFX and a bass tone so ominous it could raise the Devil himself, Bukez clearly has a dark, dark mind! Finally we hit "Pace Yourself". A percussive hype track with a very cheeky horn sample, all manner of madness has been coded into the vast space between the elements. Minimalist chaos anyone?
