Faithless
Acid Lie
Review: Not to be outdone by fellow Magnetic Man cohort Skream arising on the Non Plus imprint, the imperious Benga conjures up two hot steppahs for Kapsize. Perhaps a playful retort to all those "stadium step" slights aimed at the Croydon triumvate, "Faithless" marries a jagged guitar riff to an abrasive 4/4 beat whilst the bass heavy lower end gives proceedings the requisite swing. For us it is all about the "Where were you in 96?" hardcore dynamism of the B Side "Acid Lies", where a spacious industrial beat is attacked from all sides by the most devious of acid lines. Subtle klaxon pitching and ruff neck attitude patrol the nether regions with aplomb.

Alarma
I'mabrat
Loveking
YNY
Review: Just ahead of a sterling album from Machinedrum on Planet Mu, the Brooklyn based wizard of crazed sonics returns to former beau LuckyMe for this twelve inch shaped dalliance of epic proportions. If you've attended Boiler Room (either physically or by the wonderment of the WWW) in recent times then it's likely you will have heard the genre defying excellence that is "Alarma", which you may have heard in slightly different form on Jackmaster's all conquering Fabric mix. If not it essentially applies a demented approach to all aspects of song structure and is perhaps the most refreshingly fun thing we've heard in a long time. "I'mabrat" provides an all too brief interlude into twinkling teen crunk attitude before Mr Stewart recommences the deranged brilliance on the tempo shifting click clack hyper action of "Loveking". The bassline on this pretty much demands club play! This essential release ends with "YNY" which sounds pretty much like Machinedrum succeeding at what Tiger & Woods do best.

Time Flies
Time Flies (instrumental)
Review: Hot on the heels of their well received Can't Sleep long player on Blackbox, Kryptic Minds return with the vocal talents of Alys Be in tow. The razor sharp bass and dread inducing synths of "Time Flies" mark it as one for the moody dancefloors, with the bittersweet vocals serving as a fascinating sonic contrast to the speaker rattling low frequencies. Flip over for a heads down, hoods up instrumental version!

Exothermic Reaction
Future Funkizm
Review: "Exothermic Reaction" has been floating round for around 18 months now without release, perhaps due to Skream's involvement with Magnetic Man. Whatever your feelings on his poppier side project, this release is one of his best under his solo name for a while. The title track has a particularly alienating melodic quality, reminiscent of his classic "Midnight Request Line", but with a more slow building structure, lumbering bass and whip crack snares. B-Side "Future Funkizm" is the complete antithesis to "Exothermic Reaction" and every bit as bright as the title suggests. Featuring a neon bassline and synths that sounds almost Daft Punk-esque, Skream weaves this futuristic palette around some seriously tight grooves.

You Gotta Do You
Open Your Eyes
Review: London producer XXXY marks a change in direction away from emotion soaked bass deviations towards something much more pressurised and thrilling on You Gotta Do You, the fourth release from fledgling capital label Orca. The title track aligns neatly with the recent Swamp 81 output, with fizzing 808 patterns augmented by intermittent bmore thrills amidst the ever escalating swathes of acid tinged, electro pressure. Equally as impressive is "Open Your Eyes" with XXXY indulging in some rather winning Amen filled dynamics, though it's the smartness with which the brilliant throwback junglist vibes are unveiled which impresses the most (just ahead of the stomping bass that tightly parades the lower reaches).

Zebulon
Hammerhand (feat Mowgli)
Review: The mysterious Old Apparatus' debut release on Mala's Deep Medi was filled with almost exactly the kinds of sounds you would expect from their name; grainy, creaking dubstep that betrayed its modernity with such aged sounds. Their second record, Zebulon, has a similarly antiquated feel to it, but the addition of vocals has given the whole thing a more human feel. A-Side "Zebulon" is led by a female vocal that has a folk ballad quality to it, giving the whole thing a uniquely creepy pastoral flavour, whilst the clattering, smoky percussion gives a nice mechanical contrast. "Hammerhand" features MC Mowgli on vocal duties, with his measured aggression working nicely against the track's stretched out string melody. Old Apparatus do not disappoint with this second release; there are few producers currently producing such classic dubstep sounds with such an imaginatively dark palette.

Closer
Closer (Pinch remix)
Review: To celebrate their 50th vinyl release, Tectonic serve up a two track EP from Photek, an artist who has been enjoying a career resurgence this year. "Closer" lulls out with a soothing 120 BPM groove, a far cry from his earlier D&B days, and makes a low slung yet bass heavy impression from the offset. Label boss Pinch serves up a remix on the B-Side, transforming "Closer" back to the 140 BPM dubstep tempo with a menacing, moody and downright brilliant remix.
