Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)
Redmo - "Sadi Soul"
Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

We Are Coming (Max Graef remix)
Feel Free (Scruff 12" re-tweak)
Review: Mr Scruff's Friendly Bacteria album was something of a return to form; a sprawling, soul-flecked concoction full of broken beat, jazz, dub and classic house influences. Here, two of the album's highlights get the remix treatment. On the A, "We Are Coming" - a bumpin', basement-bothering bruk cut in its' original form - is turned into a warm and wide-eyed deep house shuffler by Berlin-based Max Graef. It's an excellent revision, which weaves the original samples and keys into a fuzzy, analogue-sounding groover. On the flip, Scruff himself extends and reworks "Feel Free", turning in a hazy nu-jazz rub built around rubbery double bass and snaking, muted horns.

A Thorough Study
Put It All Out There
A Thorough Study (2000Black remix)
Review: This is the sort of back scratching we can get behind! After New Yorker Drew Lustman issued some typically nuts Dego material on his blossoming Blueberry Records label, the favour is repaid as the London legend issues this excellent 12" from the man also known as FaltyDL. Lustman's always made his love for the output of Dego McFarlane well known and his productions on A Thorough Study feel very much at home on 2000Black. The title cut could easily be a production for some underground 90s R&B cut, there's a really Teddy Riley dip to the groove here, whilst "Put It All Out There" is a typical FaltyDL polyrhythmic lick through jazzy shades that you can see Floating Points or Theo Parrish being charmed by. Man like Dego rounds out the release with a wonderfully rich and musically rewarding rework of "A Thorough Study".

Review: Krush's eighth - and last - album Jaku is up there with Endtroducing and Donuts in terms of seminal, influential and forward-thinking beat longer players. 10 years since its release and it still sounds as timeless, unique and exciting as it did in 2004. The slick licks of a young Mr Lif on "Nosferatu", the post-apocalyptic tension of "Univearth" the sludgy, swampy cosmic hip-hop of the Aesop Rock-featured "Kill Switch" and the unashamed sax sex of "Slit Of Cloud"..... Do we need to go on? Limited edition, 180g transparent vinyl; even if you already have this in your collection this is a very, very appealing investment.

Summer Madness
Travel Jazz
Review: "It all starts with old records" goes the quote on the biography for DJ Ian Head, a dusty fingered selector from Brooklyn who's been serving up mixtapes and podcasts via his Everydaybeats website since 2006. It makes sense that his debut vinyl release would lean on a classic of veritable terms in Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness". A cover version that seeps with reverence to the original, Head's take on "Summer Madness" eschews sampling in favour of playing keys, live percussion and drum programming. It's a subtle take that will hit the more untrained ears when that classic synth line unfolds. On the flip Mr Head drops a more upbeat number in "Travel Jazz" that has some excellent brushed percussion.

Silver Tongue - "When You Go"
Review: For his eleventh album Tricky peels away the thick layers of dark mystique and moody dynamics he's synonymous with by bearing his own birth name as the title and imprint he's self-released it on. Teaming up with a series of vocal collaborators, once again it's a melting pot of styles and sounds, tied together with his own personal heady introspection: The slinky slide guitars and sinewy bass of the Nneka-featured "Keep Me In Your Shake", the club-ready electro angularities of "Nicotine Love", the mid 90s gangster hip-hop and cheeky Massive Attack reference of "Gangster Chronicle", the lolloping blues of "I Had A Dream"... As with all Tricky albums, at first the tracks seem disparate and distant, but make more sense as a whole on every listen.

Barbara Blow - "Throughout Your Precious Love" (El Barrio Recipe)
Review: Straight from Madrid, the Spanish city's veteran vibe team El Barrio DJs realise a long-standing dream and step up to Gamm with three exemplary edits. First up is a smoky, lolloping take on Pharaoh Saunders. All sweet sax and tinkling jazz keys, it's the perfect sunset soundtrack you're yet to own. Moving on we get cheeky with an ably executed twist on D'Angelo on "Here We Pie Again" before tucking right into some very precious love for a grand finale. Editors take note of these recipes... This is cooking perfection.

Review: Yes Eglo! Alex Nut and crew turn to two elder statesmen of London beat science in Dego and Kaidi Tatham for a killer induction into the art of crafting 'broken beat bullets'. For those who don't possess the necessary knowledge, Dego is the most familiar handle of Dennis McFarlane, founding member of 4Hero and responsible for so much good music over the years, and Tatham has an equally important role in the whole Broken Beat movement, being an integral member of the Bugz In the Attic collective. The pair have worked together previously on numerous occasions and they are on top form here with lead track "Ankle Injury" demonstrating a perfect balance of melody and crafty rhythm. Imagine Theo and Floating Points collaborating and your heads in the right spot to enjoy this track and "Acting Up On That Shit Don't Count" which is the sort of music you could imagine RAMP to be making if they were on the rise today. Do check the sumptuous piano and Rhodes vibes on final cut "Carrots & Sesame"!!

Review: Taking off where they left us in 2006, legendary Nigerian jazz collective Ayetoro further develop their afrofunk fusion with a brand new collection entitled Asoju Oba: Directions In Music By Funsho Ogundipe. Even deeper and more cosmic than before, each of the five tracks trembles with timeless creativity... From the mind-bending time signatures of Tony Allen and tingling keys on "419Afrobeat.com" to the heart-melting harmonies and delicate nature of "Life Is Sublime" to the smoky poetry of "Finidi George", this is a truly spotless document.

Review: Frontman from cult psychedelic band Yura Yura Teikoku, Shintaro Sakamoto unleashes his debut solo album. Playing almost all of the instruments himself, it's a highly personal affair as the Japanese musician digs deep into his influences to create a melting pot of dreamy, timeless soul. Ticking myriad boxes from Balearic to country to straight-up pop, it's a distinctive fusion that will sit well on every pair of ears. From the blue grass dynamics of "You Can Be A Robot, Too" to the Sebastien Tellier-style space-aged croons of "Never Liked You, But Still Nostalgic", Shintaro has weaved a hazy, heady web that's wholly unique.
