Rapid Racer
Blossom Quarter
Review: Lone debuts on the R&S imprint with this packed double twelve inch release that demonstrates a growing maturity in the new sound the Nottingham based producer unveiled on last winter's impressive Emerald Fantasy Tracks. Shy of that mini LP by only three tracks, the six productions that form Echolocations tighten the focus to 90s Detroit and Chicago, though the distinctive melodic stabs that characterised EFT remain - something that's apparent as soon as the huge drop in "Coreshine Voodoo" arrives! Elsewhere "Dolphin" delights via the vast swathes of melodies that wash over the intricate layers of percussion that build and drop with expertise whilst "Approaching Rainbow" is perhaps Lone at his most rhythmically rigid, with mellow bursts of colour and texture arising from the rasping Strafe-esque drums.

Saturn V - "The Fresh Heir"
Traxx/DMC - "Modem"
Review: In advance of his forthcoming album for Nation, multi-genre specialist James T Cotton teams up with label boss Traxx under their infrequent Saturn V collaborative project on this jet black ten that's backed with a Traxx & D'Marc Cantu collab. "The Fresh Heir" is filled with waves of live synth patterns expertly weaved over a relentless techno rhythm and it's the inherent musicality shown throughout that makes it something special. "Modern", the B Side trip from Traxx and DMC, is a bleep heavy warehouse jacker filled with thrilling John Carpenter synth washes and underpinned by ever so slightly unnerving acid vocals.

Spoiled (XDB remix 2)
Spoiled (XDB remix 1)
Review: Clone and Conforce seem like such a perfect fit and the latter's debut on the former's Basement Series does not disappoint, delivering some of his darkest sweatbox rattlers to date! "Spoiled" drips with jerky acid menace, with heavy strains of synthesized horror filling the spaces between dizzying bouts of percussive rain. It's this staccato approach to rhythmic execution that proves utterly thrilling. "Vulcan" twists itself inside out, beginning in stripped down fashion with rasping hi-hats providing the rhythmic thrust which is gradually strangled by the death grip of the raw emotive machine funk narcosis that steadily rises to the fore. On the flip XDB comes through with two variants on "Spoiled" with the relentless percussive shower of the first remix a nice contrast with the more guttural acid poise of the second.

Chemistry Of Human Life
Chemistry Of Human Life (Mike Parker remix)
Chemistry Of Human Life (Abstract Narrative edit)
Review: Studio buddies Obtane & Giorgio Gigli get deep on all levels with The Incredible Journey Through Your Eyes, framing psychoanalytic quandaries as the driving concept behind the heavily textured throb of "Chemistry Of Human Life". It's a relentless thrilling ride to the lower echelons of minimalist techno that will prove quite hypnotic in the right environment. Multi-media visual artist Mike Parker follows his recent sterling release on Prologue with an outer galactic reimagining of the track, filling the space around a spinal pin prick of a beat with a twisted cacophony of Martian sounding binary abstractions. The final Abstract Narrative Edit dispenses with all rhythmic inclinations in favour of expansive droning ambience.

It Ain't What It Used To Be
Megalopolitan Soul
Review: Ooh this one has got our mystery retro techno radar on full alert - arriving with little fanfare on an unspecified label but filling us with teary eyed reflections of early Underground Resistance brilliance. There's a euphoric simplicity to "It Ain't What It Used To Be" with the track literally shooting for the stars, driven by a flexing 808 rhythm and a 303 pulse with a steadfastly upwards trajectory. Throw in an ecstasy fuelled synth solo and plenty of swooping string flourishes and the results are jaw droppingly excellent. "Megalopolitan Soul" proves to be just as captivating, switching up the mood towards infectious Motor City beatdown house with a delightfully soulful vocal hook vying for your affections with the squeaked out moogisms. Some real Vibes New & Rare sounds running through this one!

Review: Mike Dehnert and his Fachwerk and MD2 labels have been at the forefront of 90s-inspired techno for the past few years - but will his consistently high strike rate translate to a long player? Thankfully, Dehnert sticks to what he knows best, resisting the ill-advised urge to position himself as a versatile all-rounder. Apart from the brief, abstract "Intro", the dreamy ambience of "Kontextfrei" and the hissing static noise of "Outro", the album centres on the dancefloor, but manages to avoid repetition. And while the dubby bass, scuffled beats and clanging percussion of "Infix" is indicative of the Berlin producer's abeyance to the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction axis, Framework widens his scope; "Beatmatching" is an uplifting vocal-sample heavy groove and this new-found playfulness is also audible on the rave riff sampling "Teilfolge" and the purring bassline and synth melodies of "Quattro". Dehnert may be operating in a new format, but Framework proves that when it comes to techno functionalism, he is peerless.

Idiosynkrasia (Ben Klock remix)
Idiosynkrasia (Ark remix)
Idiosynkrasia (Fumiya Tanaka remix)
Review: Agoria's InFine imprint indulges in a fascinating sonic experiment, with classically trained pianist Ben Klock - better known as the chiselled techno producer and resident at Berghain - remixing Luxembourgian pianist and electronic/classical composer Francesco Tristano's "Idiosynkrasia", the title track from his recently released album. Klock twists the original into a scorching minimalist roller, with computerised bleeps riding atop a scratchy mechanised rhythm designed to envelope your senses. Perlon and Circus Company affiliated producer Ark turns in a more direct remix of the same track, opting instead to cut and chop the bleeps n squeaks into a rolling groove replete with some nice piano flourishes. Flip over for the squelchy melodic thrust of Fumiya Tanaka's remix, with the revered Japanese producer brilliant melding a farty bassline with the most delicate of ivory tinkling.

Orange Road (original mix)
Orange Road (Pressure mix)
Royal Road
Review: The ever mysterious Session View arrives with a solo endeavour on the Enypnion imprint and we fully expect it to follow the lead of previous releases on the label and sell out in a matter of days. Those who like to indulge in heavily textured sounds that occupy the space between night bus friendly dubstep and the echo heavy throb of Deepchord should certainly investigate. "Orange" and its accompanying "Pressure Mix" are particular highlights, not least for the overwhelming sensation of listening to Untrue whilst traversing the gentle tidal flux of a Caribbean beach. The richness of sound that pervades the title track stretches sumptuously across the B Side, with infrequent metallic textures rising amidst a cacophony of insect-like rhythms for a resultant sound that's wholly unique.

Review: After treating us to no less than three varying but equally brilliant remixes of "Post Traumatic Son" from Ben The Vest Klock, Blueprint further flex their impressive contacts credentials by enlisting Robert Hood to tackle the Ruskin and Regis mind melter. Typically, the Detroit legend does not disappoint with a rattling industrial version that's all jagged rhythmic textures and schizophrenic machine funk flourishes underpinned by welterweight drum punches that group into off kilter sections intermittently. The overwhelming sensation is disorientating, whilst the final bass drum throb proves to be quite menacing. On the flip US producer DVS1 offers two varying takes on the track; the Pessimist mix is characterised by dream-like textures that form the backdrop to an undulating dub techno groove that ripples with metallic intent. Naturally, the Optimist mix offers a contrastingly upbeat, if somewhat glacial throbber of a version.

Skudge (DJ Rolando remix)
Skudge (2562 remix)
Review: Round three of Skudge remixes and it's the most impressive line-up to date with Underground Resistance don Rolando and Dutchman 2562 sharing space. Rolando steps up first, going deep into the core of "Ontic", adding his own 'not everyone understands' vocal refrain which twists brilliantly around the slightly more urgent throb that grows into a thrilling rattle as the track progresses. Flipping the sonic script 2562 moulds "Convolution" aka THE THEME FROM SKUDGE into his own distinct template, retaining the fractured diva utterings but carving out a jagged metallic rhythm that's driven by shards of evil bass insurgency. This third volume of Skudge remixes is essentially a dual exercise in the art of the perfect remix; retaining what makes the original so special but stamping your own sonic identity to deliver something new!
