Before
Groove 11
Review: This return of Ferox records sees an enthusiastic response from all. The label has forthcoming releases from many original Ferox artists and some new recruits and collaborations along the way. This, the first release in 5 years, sees label head-honcho Russ Gabriel in action under his Too Funk guise. From the first 'Return Of Too Funk EP' to the later 'Hotel Ibis' and Derrick Carter's remix of 'Venus Fly Trap', Russ's Too Funk grooves have been jacking dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic since 1995. This latest offering, 'Phase 3', is a 45 rpm two tracker of House goodness only available on vinyl. No clear favourite has emerged from the two sides, among the selective few that have heard it. Like much of the wealthy Ferox catalogue before it, this is proper House Music with an electric twinge.

From Us
Review: The vinyl only Kolour Ltd operation dip their toes in the rich pool of house music talent currently bubbling away in Russia, welcoming Grodno based pair Four Walls & Funkyjaws into the fold on their first 12" of 2014. Four tracks deep, One Night In Grodno demonstrates this pair have a firm and diverse production grasp of what's classified as underground deep house. Check the mad sax solo that breaks free on opening cut "Jazzy Things" Listen on "His Name Is Fast Eddie" reveals Four Walls and Funkyjaws find it difficult not to let their musical side take hold, though the understated diva flex of "Love Train" might be the best cut here.

Next To Real
Home Is Where The Beat Is
Peace
Review: Courtesy of Balance presents to you NWS, the new project from Copenhagen-based wonder kid and priest DJ Samuel Andre Madsen. Straight up underground deep house, no frills and ready to move dancefloors of all kinds. "Next To Real" is a little bumpin banger, the more club oriented one, the safe shot in other words... pressed on 45 rpm to give so your message is heard loud and clear! The B-side shines as well with two deeper cuts that should easily stand out in the sea of averageness, at least we believe so. Drop the needle and make you own decision about it.

Bummse (Glen Astro Rebumms)
Review: Having always been a dab hand with jazzy samples and rugged beat arrangements, Max Graef returns to The Gym for his first full release on the label and it's a head-turning offering from the outset. "Bummse" looks set to explode all over the place with its rough-jerking rag tag rhythm and choice piano drops, nailing the concept of jazzy house perfectly. "No 5" sports equally snappy hooks and moves, demanding attention simply through how craftily Graef has put together familiar elements to make utterly fresh sounding house music. Glen Astro "Rebumms" the title track and makes the proceedings even wobblier, letting a wriggling worm of synth into the mix and spacing out the original 4sounds to make a different kind of shocker.

Mehris Groove
Broke
Im Sumpf
Review: A man who knows a thing or two about getting deep, Christopher Rau gives Office their third release and he's got plenty of soul-enriched goodies to impart from up-for-it club tackle to strung-out mellow explorations. "Mehris Groove" is centred around a gentle chord hook and a rolling tumble of percussion with an organic lilt to it. It's simple and effective like all the best Rau tracks are. "Broke" is more downtempo yet still marches forth with a danceable purpose, despite the best efforts of the plaintive Rhodes notes to quell the kinesis of the track. "Im Sumpf" heads off into experimental territory with an intricate arrangement of distant sound and melody as warm and inviting as it is out-there.

Hezbolla
Vibrations
Hezbobongo
Review: Melbourne native Griffin James has been busy over the past few years, snapping up releases on Sleazy Beats, Join The Dots, Drumpoet Community and Fina in a whirlwind of contemporary deep house. As such it makes sense to see him sliding over to Let's Play House for another bout, leading in with the riotous party atmosphere of "Hezbolla". It comes on like the more flamboyant end of Moodymann's layering techniques, all shot through with a hooky central drum that wanders through a range of pitches. "Vibrations" gets into a more soulful kind of snag, all fragile beats that could crumple at any second and heartfelt key loops. "Hezbongobongo" is a more outwardly metallic edit that lets the drums shine through without the heated social ambience for those who like their beats with clarity.

Light Years
Slow Walker
Take U There
Whale Cry
Review: With his legacy on Moods & Grooves rekindled, Brad Peterson is well and truly back in the swing of things, and he returns one more to Inner Shift with his full-bodied deep house sound in all its emotive glory. "Light Years" is a masterclass is languid reverb echoing from poignant keys, while a dutiful deep house beat simply carries the melodic majesty into the ether. "Slow Walker" gets into a slower, dreamier reverie where the beats fall low and slow, leaving the keys to swirl about in a blissful arrangement. "Take U There" gets the energy back up again, even keeping a little tension in the mix with some pointed chord stabs, but it's back into a more somnambulant procedure on "Whale Cry" to round a classy EP off.

Western Electric
Review: First emerging on his own Little Strong label back in 2011, the producer known only as Lord Of The Isles has proved pleasantly hard to pin down on his output thus far. His releases for the likes of Cocktail D'Amour, Ene, Shevchenko, and Firecracker have often broached many different styles within the space of a twelve inch but have been bound by a sumptuous production finish, a luxuriant sheen that ensures you recognise the material as the work of Lord Of The Isles. This five track 301C Symphony EP for Munich's Permanent Vacation is undoubtedly the Scottish producer's most high profile release to date and sees no concession in style or approach. The final final beatless, string heavy "Western Electric" is a wonderful finale to perhaps his best work yet!

Last Vibe In Paris
Do You Wanna Dance
Something About You
In Your Eyes
Review: One of Traxx Underground's favoured exponents of the new 'New Jersey' sound Samann is back, reprising his first installment of Raw Lover and with an equal focus on upfront house belters that pile the heat on with pride. "Last Vibe In Paris" is all tough drum pumping and urgent diva vocal snippets, the keys and organ stabs working together to create a seductive mood that carries through the lighter tones of "Do You Wanna Dance". On the flip "Something About You" takes on a more introspective tone, although still keeping the formative elements of drums and keys in the foreground of the mix, leaving it to "In Your Eyes" to bring a sunny end to an EP of dependable house business.

Jersey Real Estate (feat Jovonn - Dubbyman remix)
Ex Friendly (feat Rich Medina - Dubbyman Space Out mix)
Review: There aren't many outposts in Europe quite as deep as Dubbyman's Deep Explorer, while the selector himself is well versed in communicating with the soul. Here on The Remix Capsule it's deep, soulful overload as Jersey Real Estate and Ex Friendly both get the remix treatment from the label boss, with both cuts featuring life-affirming musings from Jovonn and Rich Medina respectively. "What Is House" is the most blissful of trips, all sumptuous pads and keys drifting into eternity while the beat listlessly rolls out on a refined consortium of bongo drums. "Journey Man" is a more punchy track (well, by Dubbyman standards) as the synths look more upwards and the beat sports a funk injection that should make it work on smoother dancefloors.

Get Beasty

Strights Up
Review: One of the break out stars of the Hottrax label last year, Patrick Topping (or Paddy Topps as we have christened him) continues to excel on parent operation Hot Creations, returning for a second slab of feel good house business on the Foss/Jones operation in the shape of Get Beasty. Taking a largely tracky approach across all three productions, Topping casts aside any illusions of subtlety on the title cut that dips into electro house territory on occasions. On the flipside, "Stop" is a fine demonstration of why Paddy is gaining a rep for driving basslines, whilst "Strights Up" hints at an appreciation of the bleeps and bass of the Chemical Brothers.

House Is My Castle (5:51)
Roger Funk (7:00)
Review: It only seems like a few months ago that Dixon Avenue Basement Jams appeared out of nowhere, brandishing some brash ghetto-flecked house business from some unknown called Marquis Hawkes on a vividly colourful 12". But look here the Glaswegian label are racking double figures on the DABJ cat no scale and celebrating in requisite fashion with some fresh hotness from the now Berlin-based Hawkes housed in a label tote bag. Having established a sound across his previous DABJ releases, it's nice to see Hawkes try and succeed with something a bit different here. Lead cut "Honey Kisses" is on a blessed carnival tip and pushed forth by some killer broken beat programming, whilst "Let's Do It" is an ascendant slab of piano-flecked boogie house. Face down and "House Is My Castle" is more familiar MH fare, slipping into 303rd gear for some hollowed out acid house whilst "Roger Funk" is on a killer freestyle tip.

Why Don't You (Josie Akers vocals)
Review: Having made a name for himself releasing on Dirt Crew, Outernational and the like, Ben La Desh now brings his ranging take on house music to Young Adults with a veritable spread of tones and styles up his sleeve. The EP kicks off with "Afrodesia", which piles the synth pop notes on heavy over a driving rhythm section in a wistful mixture caught somewhere between boogie and techno. "Your Love" follows up with a lounge-friendly diversion that gleefully loops up samples and hooks in a laid back re-edit style, while "We Are" takes that easy-going approach and works into a more searching piece of low slung house music. "Why Don't You" wraps the EP up with a sassy Chicago-esque jam that benefits from the soulful injection Josie Akers vocals bring to the table.

Silent Sing
Review: After sneaking out singles for the likes of Futureboogie and Astro:Dynamics over the past couple of years, it's time for Crackazat to step up to Local Talk with his limber and expressive brand of synth-rich deep house. "Candle Coast" features a simmering garage swing in its rhythm and keys that could sit neatly in a Strictly Rhythm classic, but it's a track piled high with tension despite the easy-bumping surroundings. "Dancrodile" takes a more leftfield direction into tropical flavours with its bright and breezy keys and shuffling ethnic percussion, and then "Silent Sing" goes ranging out towards a proto-techno jazz fest that would make the Motor City originals well up.

Feel The Vibe (Lucianno Villarreal remix)
Away
Away (Martin Bellomo Close mix)
Review: The fledgling MyHouse YourHouse imprint follows up a first release from Nick Beringer with this solid concoction of 90s garage house from Mike Sharon, who has enjoyed previous outings on Local Talk and Traxx Underground as well as chipping into collaborative efforts Soulmate and Ultra Knites. "Feel The Vibe" lays on some moody organ chords and chunky square wave bass but there's no holding back that shuffling drum groove. Lucianno Villarreal's remix stays true to the original, simply stripping the track down and making a tougher NY funk out of it. "Away" has a more rolling lilt to it, making for a woozy structure through which nebulous synths can roam, while Martin Bellomo makes a rough appraisal of the beat and injects some freakiness into the track.

Run That Shit (Guilty Pleasure #3)
Quicksand
Review: Releases from Yaneck Salvo under his Quarion guise have arrived on an intermittent basis, and they've largely surfaced through the Retreat label that the Swiss producer runs with Hauke Session Victim. A new year and it's a fresh start for the Quarion project with this debut on Muhk imprint run by Morphology's Matti Turunen. Salvo has admitted he tailored his approach with the label in mind for the Shale Gas EP and that's no bad thing, with the Quarion sound complemented by a rawer approach. The title track mans the A Side and demonstrates Salvo's capacity for wrenching real soul from his analogue machinery and it's complemented by two tempo varying B Side cuts that find him in a much more dancefloor focused frame of mind. The superbly named "Run That Shit (Guilty Pleasure #3)" is a particular highlight!

Deymare - "Episode 2"
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Moog Mood"
Saverio Celestri - "Sesison"
MP - "Tension"
Review: Owen Jay's Batti Batti label continues to make steps into the physical realm, with their fifth 12" release another split artists offering. Anyone with a firm grasp of contemporary deep house will recognise Deymare's name and that should be enough to draw you into a record filled with redeeming production qualities. The Finnish producer opens proceedings with "Episode 2" a rippling and crisp house cut that sets the tone nicely. Label boss Owen Jay crosses swords with regular production partner and compatriot Melchior Sultana for "Moog Mood," a wonderfully laid back saunter through musically rich house music and it must be said a subtly devilish bassline that no doubt informed the title. Those who always look for some B Side magic will find much to savour in Saverio Celestri and MP's respective contributions with the latter's "Tension" a wonderfully lopsided slab of punch drunk beat down.

Jam1 (short version)
Review: As a selector for the Standard Place party and host of the excellent No Boring Intros NTS show, Jon Rust already commands a formidable reputation amongst those that know. It's becoming increasingly evident Rust's eye and ear for sonic excellence is making his Levels label one to watch. This second release throws the spotlight on Estonian producers Ajukaja and Andrevski and is a real delight! Ajukaja is something of a musical hero back in Estonia and we suggest you check out the Porridge Bullet label he runs if you like what you hear on these three tracks. Drawing their formative interests in industrial and ambient sounds into the deep house template, Ajukaja and Andrevski are on most impressive form with A Side cut "Rare Birds" which positively glides in a manner akin to a Tallin-born Mr Beatnick. Do not sleep on this!
