What Works
What Works (Vakula remix)
Mass X
Review: Right, you know the drill. New Firecracker 10". Sumptuous artwork? Check. Killer music? Checkity check. Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is the man behind the seventh instalment in the cult series, with A-Side cut "What Works" showing a move away from the soulful strains of his recent long player for Prime Numbers and towards moody, shuffling Detroit house. It seems fitting that remix duties are handed to Vakula - it was Firecracker after all who first showcased the Ukrainian producer's sounds to a wider audience - and despite his prolific form in recent times, his appearance here still feels very special indeed. Unsurprisingly, he turns in a memorable, highly atmospheric remix of "What Works", before another Fudge original, the chiming sea of calm that is "Mass X", rounds off an essential release.

A Walk In The Park
Can You Really Know? (feat Aniya Ouu)
A Walk In The Dark (The Revenge remix)
A Walk In The Park (Pional remix)
Review: The consistently impressive Dikso imprint returns with label stalwart Daniel Solar taking the reigns of this four track EP. The uptempo vibe, burning chords and occasional acid squiggles on "A Walk In The Park" make it primed for immediate club play, while "Can You Really Know?" featuring Aniya Ouu bumps hard at a slower, sultrier pace. Flip over for two remixes from a couple of Juno's favourite producers - The Revenge and Pional - with the former taking "A Walk In The Park" into deeper, Theo Parrish-esque shuffle territory, while the latter tweaks the same track into a sweetly melodic roller. Quality from start to finish here!

Misspent Emotions

2 B What U Want
NR-707
Review: Having impressed all that dress well with his remix of Ali Renault a while back, Perseus Traxx steps out for a debut release proper on the Boe imprint that is nothing less than illuminating! Arriving on thick set vinyl sporting hand stamped artwork; Misspent Emotions presents five raw throwdowns drenched deep in the sounds of pure Chicago machine funk. Despite the multiplicity of records these days offering just this, there's an undeniable quality to all aspects here which lifts the EP far above your average Chi-Town clone. The title track will hit the spot as soon as those haunting pads arise over the rough drum machine manipulations, but crucially the four other tracks provide just as much substance for the mind, body and soul. With releases in the pipeline for Dutch label M>O>S and Abstract Forms, Perseus Traxx is clearly a talent to watch. Big applause to all involved on this beast of a twelve inch.

Review: Omar S has always been something of a maverick, but even by his own high standards, surprise second album It Can Be Done, But Only I Can Do It is something else. Like much of his work, it's an album of acute contrasts: tough and aggressive on one hand (the ragging acid of the opener and "Ganymede"), soft, calming and blissful on the other ("Nite's Over Comption"). Along the way, highlights are plentiful, from the heady deep house of "You Wish", sparse porno beatdown of "Look Hear Watch" and hypnotic rhythms of "Bobien Larkin", to the next generation Motor City techno of "Over You Two" and near-anthemic simplicity of "Here's Your Trance, Now Dance".

Who Wrote The Rules Of Love (R&B Long mix)
Who Wrote The Rules Of Love (Shadow Ray remix)
Who Wrote The Rules Of Love (R&B Short mix)
Review: Omar S is clearly having fun this year - the subtle euphoria of "Here's Your Trance Now Dance" was followed by a new studio album, released recently with about six days notice - and now he's popped up with a new 12" featuring Colonel Abrams on FXHE. The legendary urban crooner turns in a typically soulful vocal turn on "Who Wrote The Rules Of Love", which comes in three versions: two R&B mixes (short and long) and a remix from Shadow Ray. It's the Shadow Ray tweak that will turn on the house heads, with a beefy acid line and chopped up vocals forming the backbone of the arrangement. Those who get in quick can grab the lovely coloured vinyl version!

Review: A new imprint arises from mainland Europe in the shape of the mysterious Rawax with the debut twelve presenting a quartet of Untitled Tracks from Siberian producer Unbroken Dubs. Given the mood present throughout and the location of the producer, obvious parallels can be drawn with the excellent output from Ethereal Sounds, and that should be recommendation enough for people to investigate. Should you require further enticement, this release opens with wormhole traversing rhythms cutting through the sonic ether, though distant chord embellishments add a touch of warmth to the slightly alien tones that circulate constantly. The subsequent two tracks continue in this manner as Unbroken Dubs seeks to flush the stripped down patterns of drums and fuzzed out bass in ever increasing expanses of sonic dust. It's the final track where a more apparent sense of urgency is introduced as the Siberian lays down a tropical shower of percussion over intrusive chords.

When I Think About (Hauke Freer remix)
When I Think About (instrumental mix)
When I Think About (original mix)
Review: Fresh from the oven, new label Foul & Sunk maintain that their ethos is to "focus attention on soulful club music in all its facets" and for their first release they've called in the help of Italian Nicholas to convey their message. "When I Think About" encompasses the dirty bump and grit of a 6am dancefloor, its tight 4/4 structure and modern house sheen immediately evident. Cleverly though, it also hankers back to old skool tech house once it's picked up full speed, as long drawn out synths swell and a rough, scratchy vocal swoons. On the flip Hauke Freer (one half of Session Victim) remixes "When I Think About" to accompany the instrumental version. Getting deeper still, Freer focuses on the old skool elements and flushes out the modern; turning it into a deep and smouldering remix that gets the Juno vote.

September Rain
September Rain (Urtzi remix)
Stage
Ciclico
Review: Having shared duties with everyone's fantasy music tutor Mike Huckaby on a previous Downbeat release, Jose Rico returns to the label with a three track solo endeavour backed with an Urtzi remix. Reputedly the end result of self imposed exile with all manner of analogue equipment and MPCs, Yagoba Itzoiten impresses from the off. "September Rain" references the gentle key dynamics of Larry Heard, yet Rico's own warm chord arrangements and subtle drum placement lift the track beyond the realm of Mr Fingers pastiche. Urtzi's remix switches up the feel of the groove for a more dusty bottom heavy sensation, yet still retains the original's sense of melodic warmth. Check the flip for the restrained Hammond heavy vibes of "Stage" and the shimmering melodic brilliance that is "Cicilo".

So It Begins Again (DC 10 mix)
Red Lights
Review: Kerri Chandler returns with four new slabs of heaving house which serve as a sledge hammer reminder that no one can produce thumping kick drums like the New Jersey don. The Kaoz Stressin' Me mix of "We Are Here" contains some smile-inducing jabs at the world of social networking, which ride above pumping chord lines and a 90s-esque female vocal refrain. Sharing the A-Side you'll find the beefy club drums of "So It Begins Again", which will please those who count heavy instrumental jams ala "Bar A Thym" among their favourite Chandler moments. Flip over for the DC 10 version of "So It Beguins Again", no doubt a tribute to the sweat-soaked Ibizan club at which Chandler holds a residency, before "Red Lights" rounds off a killer 12" with a cut that is more Berlin basement that White Isle.

Chasing Things
Running Backwards
Don't Give A Shit
Review: Aside from bringing attention to the brilliantly deranged Honey badger, an animal whose thuggish disregard for nature's food chain can only be applauded, Lovebirds deserve props for three further examples of his knack of fusing classic strains of disco with a contemporary house bump. Arriving on the Teardrop imprint that putout their seminal take on "Love & Happiness", the Honey Badger EP sees Sebastian Doring in fine form. "Chasing Things" positively glides across the A Side, with a neat contrast in elements as the melodic elements are treated to all manner of subaqueous filtration, allowing the crisp bumping rhythms the sort of prominence that we imagine sounds sublime on a boat just off the Petrcane coast. Elsewhere, "Running Backwards" is a master class in switching moods within the duration of a track whilst "Don't Give A Shit" heads for some straight up filtered disco ish.

LOVE (Kyle Hall remix)

LOVE (Smallpeople remix)
Review: Such was the excellence of MCDE's entrance into the DJ-Kicks hall of fame that K7! have taken the unusual step of commissioning remixes of "Love", Plessow's trademark original production for the mix. Leading the way is the still far too talented for someone so young Kyle Hall, whose remix sprawls across the A Side in typically claustrophobic fashion, building an intoxicating late night groove around analogue bass pulses, relentless percussion and all manner of strange synth noises. Wolfgang Voigt reaches for the (synth) strings on his pleasingly groovy rework, whilst Smallpeople do their best Lone impression with the assistance of some big piano riffs and jackin' beats.

QueQue
Beaver Club
Johny Mc Hockey
Review: This EP from the fledgling Candian label Fur Trade Recordings sees established producer The Mole deliver three cuts of the loopy house he is known for. A-Side "QueQue" is a slow building number in which a murky bassline tumbles beneath a multitude of vocal samples which appear out of the gloom, whilst even the piano line is filtered right into the background, giving the whole thing a remarkably sinister edge. On the flip is "Beaver Club", a similarly dark track with a hypnotic quality, with a motorik arpeggio bass driving the track while minimal percussion clatters in the background with the sound of clockwork. The whole thing simmers along nicely until the end when a second arpeggio builds and increases the energy noticeably. "Johnny McHockey" rounds things off in a much lighter mood, with a more bumping mid-tempo groove propelled forward by the escalating synth line that simmers above the deep bass.

Review: David Woods - one half of filter loving disco tweakers extraordinaire Tiger & Woods - goes solo on this new 12" on Editainment, aptly titled On The Green Alone. We are not sure of the whereabouts of his acquaintance, Larry Tiger, but Dave shows he's equally adept at chopping semi-forgotten vocal samples on his own, with A-Side cut "License To Drill" bumping hard thanks to its indecipherable but immensely pleasing vocal snippets, omnipresent funk riff and delicious keys. "Slazenger 1" and "1:00:00" share the B-Side, with the chunky acid bassline of the former totally outshone by the brilliant bongo/wailing vocal combo of the latter.

Review: Hot Mix Records founder Simoncino has signed up to the routinely ace Skylax imprint for a five cut EP titled Warrior Dance Part 1. A Chicago house and Detroit techno devotee, his dedication to US electronic music couldn't be more fitting for Skylax. Kicking of with "Mystery Girl" we're instantly immersed in Simoncino's deeper than deep, meandering house with heavy percussive pockets and soothing vocals; a theme that remains with "Kojima" and "Do It Again". Light and airy high ends are kept adrift by hearty and rich bass lines, striking the perfect balance for chilled out yet pumping listening. On the flip "Mystery To Me" and "Paradise To Me" are riddled with gorgeously rapid hi-hats and long drawn out beds, their style and sophistication fiercely evident.

Thyladomid & Adriatique - "Deep In The Three"
Peter Kruder - "Young Girl"
Garry Todd - "No Giggity"
Review: The debut drop on 2DIY4, Solomun's cheeky offshoot of Diynamic, has pretty much been burning up sound systems from London to Ibiza thanks to the inclusion of that Michael McDonald leaning A Side, as well as the more subtle brilliance of the track that utilised Curtis Mayfield's syrupy vocals with aplomb. Having grasped the spotlight for the debut, Solomun steps aside and allows his Diynamic cohorts the chance to showcase their talent for the edit on the Various Artists EP, which is likely to find just as much favour with the Hot Natured clique. Thyladomid & Adriatique hog the A Side, lining a chunky yet deep groove with the distinctive vocals of Feist, whilst Peter Kruder turns up on the B Side with the haunting vibes of "Young Girl". It's Gary Todd that will get the most play though, updating a true classic of the 90's r n b canon, transforming it into an immediately recognisable and very handy DJ tool.

Mystery Girl (Set Me Free)
Mystery Girl (Set Me Free) (feat Seiji Bassrub)
Review: This release sees Jackmaster's always on-point Numbers label with their first reissue, and they've pulled off something quite special with this reissue of Pierre's Pfantasy Club's seminal "Mystery Girl (Set Me Free)". It's a full on piece of vintage analogue 303 jack, characterised by its synthesised slap bass and catchy-as-hell vocal. Considering this is vintage acid house, the 303 line is actually quite restrained, only drifting in briefly, but is made no less furious by the cut up vocals that see the track out. The B-Side sees veteran UK producer Seiji provide a "Bassrub" of the track. It's actually incredibly sensitive to the original, letting it do its own thing for the most part, forgoing his usual funky tempos, but cutting the vocals up further and adding some devastating subs that will blow out bass-bins everywhere.

Phil Weeks - "Love You More"
Kinky Movement - "De Ja Vu" (feat Benji Smedz)
The Sound Diggers - "Dynamic"
Review: UK label Drop is renowned for its high class output - punchy, soulful and with just that je ne sais quoi, they rarely disappoint. This House Bound sampler features three contrasting cuts from three equally contrasting producers. Highly lauded Frenchman Phil Weeks contributes "Love You More"; choppy and syncopated but with a lulling groove in its arrangement, it bobs along at a comfortable and head nodding pace. Five man group Kinky Movement feature Benji Smectz for their "De Ja Vu" track. Shamefully addictive in its cheesiness and riding of a licked bass guitar line and stabby synths, it's a real guilty pleasure track. The Sound Diggers are last up with "Dynamic"; beholding sheer funk and rhythm, it's a classy nod to the old school.
