Bit One (7:15)
Cloud Country (5:21)
Thinking Allowed (8:44)
Review: In a 2010 interview, Tornado Wallace explained the inspiration behind his distinctive title as "something between a deep south blues artist or a logger from Nebraska". In subsequent years the Australian has seemingly swapped the south blues artist for something southern Italo, keeping the Nebraskan edge with his logger's beard. This is demonstrated in wondrous fashion on the water-coloured artwork to Thinking Aloud, his debut EP for Lovefingers' ESP Institute. Heavy bass plods switch to a walking bassline in "Bit One", as motorised and starry arpeggios weave between breathy vocals that are as much human as they are synthesised. This is complemented by "Cloud Country" which lowers in BPM with more Italo inspired arpeggios, pulsating toms and sprinklings of Latin sounding synths. The title track "Thinking Allowed" hogs the flip, slowly revealing itself to be a Balearic burner of the highest calibre. It opens with an analogous kick-snare combo and a "higher-self" spoken word spiel that's reminiscent of Will Powers legendary "Adventures In Success". Peaks come; troughs go as the track builds sublimely before dovetailing back to its original form. Welcome back sir!

Ahumbo (5:55)
Island Time (4:39)
If It Ever Feels Right (9:11)
Review: The Lovefingers helmed ESP Institute had a frankly killer year in 2012, and if this opening salvo for 2013 is anything to go by we're in for many more treats from the label this year. Pharoahs have already graced 100% Silk with their brand of disco-inspired synth jams, but these three tracks are infinitely more accomplished. "Ahumbo" combines subtle Afrobeat influences with thick, lustrous bass and the kind of spacious guitar licks that would make Talking Heads jealous, while the dubby feel and atonal percussion of "Island Time" recall Ital's brilliant track "Queens". Finally, the "If It Ever Feels Right" goes in as hard as you could imagine an ESP release going, with thick analogue bass tumbling out of control at 132bpm driven relentlessly forward by a conga-led rhythm, which segues effortlessly into a blissful saxophone breakdown. Unsurprisingly, this is excellent stuff which comes highly recommended.

Changes (Skylevel edit)
Picture Tomorrow (Skylevel edit)
Watch Your Step (Skylevel edit)
Smiling Stranger (Skylevel edit)
Review: While we're still none the wiser as to the identity of those behind the Skylevel crew, their fifth round of edits - after nearly 12 months of hibernation - are as top notch as we've come to expect from the outfit. The raucous slap-bass funk of "Changes" kicks things off, with abstract bleeps and sweeps adding some spice to the classic disco vocal, while the downtempo jazz cut-up of "Picture Tomorrow" brings some class to proceedings with its dusty guitar licks. On the flip, "Watch Your Step" pulls out the big guns with its simple but deadly filtered disco loop, offering just enough of the original vocal to set the floor alight, while "Smiling Stranger" delivers a soulful Balearic chugger filled with Indian tabla drums. As ever, the intricate artwork and fine production values elevate this above your standard disco edits - must check!

Review: As anyone who follows their Facebook feed can attest, the still-somehow-mysterious Tiger & Woods have largely spent the past twelve months treating the clubs of Europe and beyond to their own distinct brand of heavily diced up and devilishly EQ'd disco goodness. As a result, Editainment releases have slowed somewhat, though last year's Castle Rock EP from River & Phoenix demonstrated a welcome stylistic diversion into 80s teen drama classics. The Banana Balls EP heralds the return of Larry & David. There are few words that can be said about "Pitch" and "Slice" that haven't been uttered about a Tiger & Woods production previously, though given the fact the great edit glut of 2010-11 has thankfully passed it's probably quite nice to drop these loopy gems in the midst of a house set. The high octane "Slice" is a particularly rubbery delight.

Inkswel - "So Over It" (feat Reggie B)
Freekwency - "Just For Two" (feat Molly D)
Review: Following killer transmissions for Unthank and Dopeness Galore last year, our favourite Australian funkateer Inkswel opens 2013 with a bang and a bump in the shape of Hot Shot Records, a new label the Melbourne based producer has founded with like minded soul Freekwency. Both artists contribute a side each to this debut release, a dinky seven that is practically bursting with unrestricted soulful drum machine music. Inkswel calls shotgun, teaming up with vocalist Reggie B for the glorious MPC fonk of "So Over It" whilst Voyeurhythm artist Freekwency also collaborates with a singer Molly D on the resplendent drum machine glisten of "Just For Two". It's only begun for Hot Shots - keep an eye on this label!

More Heavy
Dem Know
Review: In case you're not aware of the Whiskey Barons, they've been brewing up a cosmic fusion of Afro beat, disco and just a dash of dub for a few years now, knocking out occasional cheeky 12s on labels like Flavorhead. Here we find one half of the Boston duo teaming up with Nigerian singer Kelata for some full-on vocal afro antics. "More Heavy" is a supreme slice of contemporary Afro funk that's been produced with the loose but loopy production you'd expect to hear on a DFA release back in the day. "Dem Know", meanwhile, pounds a deep hypnotic groove allowing Bosq's horn, Hammond and guitar recipe bubble freely. Majestic stuff.

DJ Fett Burger - "Disco Tre"
DJ Grillo Wiener - "Disco Fire"
Review: Bringing the unabashed heat right in time for the peak party season, Sex Tags UFO have exactly what you need to get the floor a-burning in a blaze of hand-clapping glee. Fett Burger is up first with the heavy-on-the-one thump of "Disco Tre", which side-swipes any notions of being careful with an edit and instead amps up the cut where it counts and makes sure the kick and the bass never falter for all the pings, zips and guitar licks flying about the place. DJ Grillo Weiner is more madcap, with a tumbling rhythm section and sample mayhem flying from all angles. In this instance it's the hats that keep the groove discernible, but there's still more than enough good honest party intention within the chops to get limbs flailing.

By Design - "Stir It Together"
Osmose - "Al Knows What's Up"
Osmose - "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed"
Review: Cruising nice and easy into earshot on the Smokecloud imprint, byDesign and Osmose take a side each in chopping up some choice old classics with a tender touch to work in modern contexts. byDesign gets the whole A-side to roam over with a version of Diana King's cover of the Bob Marley classic, "Stir It Up", working on a 90s flavoured hip hop groove and dubby cuts of King's vocal. On the flip, Osmose is having a lot of fun working on Alexander O'Neal's "Fake", keeping the tough beat intact and instead letting the effects bring in the changes. While the origin of the last track on the 12" is undetectable at this point, "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed" comes on like a prime slice of Balearic goodness, packing easy horn blasts, funky guitar licks and a whole lot of filter action.

Sorcerer (Beaten Space Probe edit)
Act Like You (Beaten Space Probe edit)
Review: Japanese nu discophile BSP gets lively on Glenview and the results are salubriously squeaky clean. As they always are with this chap. Proceedings commences with a major hands aloft moment courtesy of his tweak of a Brooklyn Dreams jam; "Street Man" starts with a trippy, deep, loop intro before breaking into the full vocals with bare faced drama. Elsewhere we find him dissecting then rebuilding Norma Jean Wright's classic "Sorcerer" and Fat Larry's Band get a rude downtempo facelift. FYI: Disco boogie fans should head directly to "If You Want Me" for the biggest cosmic jam of the EP.

Afterlife
Afterlife (Vakula remix)
Afterdub
Review: Recently tipped for greatness by Peaking Lights, you should be fully aware of Secret Circuit by now, having helped establish the Beats In Space label last year as well as releasing a killer album on Emotional Response. Eddie Ruscha Jnr returns to Beats Ib Space here ahead of a new album for Tim Sweeney's label and Afterlife has us purring with anticipation. The track has "instant classic" written all over it from the opening strains of its deep melodic analogue squelch, and though the vocals catch you by surprise they only enhance what is a nugget of Balearic gold. On the flip, the Ukrainian hero that is Vakula proves an inspired choice of remixer, turning the title track into a low-slung dusky house gem, while "Afterdub" rounds out the package, taking the original and floating it upwards on a cloud of hydrogenated synths.

High Jinks
High Jinks (Gilb'r Hunting remix)
Low Jinks
High Jinks (Photonz remix)
Review: The not so mysterious Bohemian Groove debut fully on Throne Of Blood after hinting at their taste for psychedelic disco with a DJ Druzz vs. Omega Mus remix for the NYC imprint last year. On their original track "High Jinks" and its moodier counterpart "Low Jinks", broad brushstrokes of synth are the order of the day, letting the percussion shake seductively in the background while the melody intones an emotionally rich message of soul-replenishing dance music. Versatile Records main man Gilb'r brings a more dramatic, 70s library music vibe to bear on his "Hunting" remix of "High Jinks", while Portugese duo Photonz' delve into a nagging broken beat techno roller of magnificent proportions.

Breakthrough (original 12" mix)
Breakthrough (DJ Kaos 12" remix)
Review: Released back in 2010 the Backwoods LP was a long term fixture in the sets of Tim Sweeney Rub N Tug et al, yet never really got the wider appreciation it deserved, despite the project being overseen by Japanese DJ supreme Kento Sasaki aka DJ Kent aka Force Of Nature. One of the album's many highlights "Breakthrough" gets a much warranted new 12" issue courtesy of the ever dependable Jolly Jams outlet and comes with the added bonus of a remix from label boss DJ Kaos. Live drumming, twinkling instrumentation and a true mastery of the groove are what sets this track apart from the pretenders, whilst the Kaos effort successfully implements a housier feel without sacrificing the heart stopping brilliance of Sasaki's original.

Kosmische Ruckenwind (Quiet Village remix)
Kosmische Ruckenwind (Elitechnique remix)
Review: The cosmic tailwind of DJ Kaos' debut release for the Loft Supreme Series is revisited in fine style by Clone, with the Rotterdam label commissioning Quiet Village and Elitechnique to remix "Kosmicher Ruckenwind". Originally released back in 2009, the track was already quite the epic slab of cosmiche influenced psychedelic disco from the Jolly Jams boss, stretching past the 11 minute mark. Joel Martin and Matt Edwards elect to celebrate their first Quiet Village production together in some time by occupying as much space as possible on a 12" with their 25 minute remix which teases out all new levels of meditative cosmiche bliss out of the DNA of Kaos' original production. Standing in marked contrast, Elitechnique opt for an altogether more seductive disco arrangement that will please fans of the Rotterdam based duo's own recent outing on the Loft Supreme label.

It Goes Free
Review: That man from Banff Eddie C is lining up to release his second album, and second for Endless Flight, later this year and on the basis of this two track sampler Country City Country should be classed under corker! The Canadian leads with the sublimely cheeky "La Palette", a production where Brazil meets Chicago on the dancefloor as slick samba tinged percussion and a wonderfully drunken lead Rhodes keyboard line get busy over a rippling 808 groove. Complementing this, Eddie C goes eyes down on the drum funk beat down of "It Goes Free" which discards with any notion of slinky melody in favour of some good old jacking house rhythms and chaotic orchestral samples. Pretty much the perfect Endless Flight 12"!

Review: Those with painful memories of The Free Association, the ill conceived funk rock Supergroup of the same name fronted by David Holmes, should not fret as this 12" does not signal their return. Instead Free Association is the double A standard work of Andrew Allsgood and Alister Johnson, with this eponymous plate offering up four Balearic club jams that will appeal instantly to fans of the Black Disco operation or the much missed RVNG of the NRDS series. Indeed this record evokes that period pre-disco edits deluge where actual digging was involved, with all four tracks here pretty much a mystery to us. The A Side veers wonderfully from string heavy, low slung psyche-disco to minimal and slightly foreboding percussive workouts that sound like Serge Gainsbourg doped up in India. Our favourite cut however is "Goodie Goodie" which sounds suspiciously like a dark disco cover version of Pink Floyd.

Review: Ruled by Passion, Destroyed by Lust marks the fine debut of The Asphodells, Andrew Weatherall's latest collaboration with close friend and creative foil Timothy J Fairplay. Their compatibility shines through, taking their shared interests and inspirations and playfully tosses them together to create a stylish, coherent whole. The album displays its dark underbelly proudly, but there are more than enough shards of light to inspire those salivating after the bold melodies of Two Lone Swordsmen or the naive, child-like bagginess of Weatherall's Screamadelica era work. At times reminiscent of New Order and others cripplingly paranoia inducing, this ten track set concludes in sublime fashion with the duo's dreamy, cosmic disco-era cover of A.R. Kane's "A Love From Out Of Space"

Tell Her You Know
Come On Now
Review: The second release on the label shaped offshoot of Melbourne Deepcast sees the collective make further room for themselves in the house scene. If the inaugural release was a statement of intent, introducing four key members of the Melbourne Deep House Mafia, the second release is more focused with Andy Hart returning to the fray and serving up a delightful collaboration with the rightly lauded Francis Inferno Orchestra. "D2Me" has everything you want in a modern deep house jam; a bassline that is subtle yet heavyweight, crisp drums, multiple layers of melodics and deft vocal turns dipped in soul and most importantly there's a real progression throughout. The duo flex their solo production muscles on the flip with Mr Hart taking the lead on "Tell Her You Know", which similarly impresses via the sheer depth of sounds at play through out. The Francis Inferno Orchestra solo jam is more about the groove, whipping up a head of sultry steam over a rasping beat and gliding disco strings.
