Ambush
People Power
F About
No Gyal Tune
Review: Four Flowdan tracks produced by Footsie, The Bug, Coki and Masro delivered on Hyperdub. This ticks so many boxes it's impossible to count them all. Naturally each track slaps with demonstrative clarity: "Ambush" rolls on a bed of 808s as Flowdan explains his tactics with confidence. It's the perfect entry point to an EP that gets angrier by the bar. "People Power" is concentrated menace: all droning bass and textured processes on the drums and Flowdan's evil spits. "F About" is a unique jam of snare rolls and off-beat twisted synth horns that's perfect for Flowdan's sermons on not messing around musically. "No Gyal Tune" finishes the set with loopy militancy; grab the money, grab the trophy... No one is murdering it like Flowdan right now. Serious business indeed!

Caught
Collide
Review: With Wen and Parris offering a consummate showcase of their studio chemistry on "Time" from the former's Keysound LP Signals, a further chance to indulge in their collaborative approach is presented via this full single for Tempa. The results are two crystalline deep dubstep pieces that ooze space and soul. "Caught" fluctuates with funk thanks to the clever use of a small vocal sample and a slim line breakbeat. "Collide", meanwhile, pumps a heavier rhythmic message while being smothered in pressurised pads and coated with a subtle but effective female vocal. Both are stunning. Don't get caught out.

Greyscale
Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

If It's Not The Police
If It's Not The Dub
Review: Zam Zam Sounds keep up the pressure with their fifth transmission so far this year (and 20th overall) and welcome Berlin-based soldiers Dub War and Infra into the fold with If It's Not The Police. Formerly a duo consisting of Benny Ill and Bill Robin, this 7" is the first release with the latter working solo under the guise and also his first collaboration with Marius Braun aka Infra. As with previous Zam Zam drops, the roots of dub culture are retained with If It's Not The Policea with a vocal cut backed by a dub rendition. Deep studio science and sound design paired with classic dub aesthetics, dubstep bass-weight, and halftime garage swing are very much in effect here and we hope this is the first of many collabs between the pair.

Dub
Lazy Dub
Anxious Dub
Review: WhoDem have already picked up some neat scene heat through one of their key founders; London bass conjurer J Robinson. Finally unleashing their debut 10", the justified hype is evident through every sonic element... Authentic dub delivered with contemporary dynamics, it's an essential addition to all bass fans' collections. "Lazy Dub" is a lolloping, rolling bounce track that bubbles with a bulbous bassline, reverbed rim-shots and soft echoing skanks. "Anxious Dub" is a just a little sharper on its toes as the bassline takes a backseat and allows the minor keys and melodica to push their message home. A genuinely ace debut release, you won't be asking who WhoDem are for very long.

Conquista
Collusion
Review: Chestplate extend transatlantic relations by welcoming Los Angeles-based producer Mesck into the fold with the Conquista 12". Despite his location, Mesck has a firm grasp of the vibrant dynamics that make up the Chestplate sound, rolling out two dancefloor focused steppers that will find a welcome home in many a selector's record box. The title cut really shows off Mesck's talent for arrangement and sound design, with the hollowed kick patterns and ominous bassline the two defining elements. On the flip side, "Collusion" finds Mesck in a darker mood, stripping back the percussive detail to let the swooping bassline dominate proceedings on a production spilling with rudeness.

Take Time (instrumental)
Review: Whilst Jack Adams has been producing for a few years under the Mumdance guise, he really seems to have narrowed on a sound lately that's resulted in some truly dynamic club music. After hook-ups with Logos and Tectonic boss Pinch and a superb Twists & Turns mixtape, Mumdance surfaces on the Rinse label with Take Time, a killer plate that really sets out the sound he's pushing right now. If you are down with the whole post-Classical Curves grime meets sound design approach that's been bubbling away you will love this, as Mumdance lays down some mind crushing arrangements for Novelist and Spyro to spit lines over. B Side "The Sprawl" is a real highlight and features on the forthcoming mix CD Mumdance has done with Pinch.

Review: Having been a fixture in the LA beat scene for a long time, the past few years and an association with Brainfeeder have seen Matthewdavid hit a strong flurry of productivity of late, and this long player simply adds to the tumble of fractured soul, lopsided hip hop and swooning balladry. There's a cheeky cover of Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" woven into the slow jam funk of "Perpetual Moon Moods" while elsewhere "Next To You Always" finds Matthewdavid dropping a limber but tongue-in-cheek lyrical flow. With a dizzying array of ideas and moods bouncing the listener around his labyrinthe musical mind, the leftfield LA crooner has once again flouted convention while sugaring the pill to perfection.

Head Top
Mario Ting
Mr Miyagi
Deserted Island
Review: Initially released digitally last month, Joker's Head Top EP finally makes it's way onto a Kapsize 12" platter! Some four tracks deep, Head Top doesn't see Liam McLean depart from the Purple Wow sound that has defined his output as Joker but there is definitely something new being brought to the table that hits you as soon as the beat drops on the opening title track. Here it's the skeletal, almost boom bap rhythms that take centre stage with a jagged, unpredictable bassline for company. Given the title it's no surprise to see "Mario Ting" plundering a NES chiptune sound, though the weighty bassline will do some real damage - check the flip for a darker rendition of this approach in "Mr Miyagi". Wax On mate!
