Review: On the basis of this latest Lone long player, Matthew Cutler seems to be mellowing with age. Having earned a belated breakthrough on the back of a number of rush-inducing, rainbow-coloured releases for R&S that saw him surging towards the dancefloor like a toddler high on cheap orange squash, the producer once again flips the script on Reality Testing. The hardcore and rave influences of recent years have largely been abandoned in favour of smooth, head-nodding hip-hop beats, stargazing chords, twinkling melodies and far-sighted atmospherics. It is, in many ways, a return to his roots. More importantly, it's also very good, delivering synth-laden warmth and hazy, laidback grooves by the barrow load.

Feel It Out
Raptor
Raptor (Will Berridge remix)
Review: In addition to his work as one half of Mista Men, London via Doncaster producer Ryan Aitchison has been making solo moves under his Mella Dee guise these past few years with appearances in all the right places (think Wolf Music, Shabby Doll and Sccucci Manucci). In fact Mella Dee's featured on two of the latter label's releases so it's little surprise to find the producer popping up on the affiliated Manucci's Mistress operation. The Feel It Out EP sits snugly between house, techno and bass music with the lead cut featuring a rather vicious sub bass line and some superb vocal edits, whilst "Raptor" opts for a moodier UKG meets snapping techno flex. Do check the smudged out bass refix from Will Berridge too.

Down
Search Party
Review: Tectonic bossman Pinch has whittled his forward-thinking stick to a point so hard it could poke the eye out of an unaware London pedestrian all the way from Bristol base. "Down" is a perfect example of how ahead of the game Pinch is and is plucked from his forthcoming genre smelting mix CD of the year contender with Mumdance. It's a lesson in sludgy, early-Warp style techno that's droning and paranoid, twisting his immersive signature into an entirely new context. Flip for "Search Party", a groove that shuffles and shakes on a fractious broken beat while an array of well-tamed wobbles twist and tease each other. Long may Pinch keep whittling...

L-Vis 1990 - "Funk 4D"
Schlachthofbronx - "Volumen" (feat Buraka Som Sistema)
Illum Sphere - "Bullet"
French Fries - "Shift"
Review: Ahead of the full Modeselektion 3 compilation (which looks to be the most diverse collection thus far) Monkeytown offer a 12" taste of what to expect featuring contributions from Night Slugger L Vis 1990, Schlachthofbronx, Illum Sphere and French Fries. Calling shotgun, L Vis 1990 lays down what can only be described as a not-messing-about-mate marker in the shape of the awesomely surreal industrial/ghetto house hybrid "Funk 4D", German Disko B regulars Schlachthofbronx also turn up with Buraka Som Systema for the totally out there detuned grind "Volumen". Illum Sphere lays down some brisk, taut percussive styles on "Bullet" whilst ClekClekBoomer French Fries reps Paris with the Mike Parker gone electro vibes of "Shift".

Review: We have no idea who Shanghai Den is beyond the fact that he/she/they supposedly hail from Cyprus, has a fondness for opium, and made their debut on a collaboration with Falty DL for a Ninja Tune 10" released back in January. Here Shanghai Den resurfaces in illustrious fashion with a full debut for R&S Records with two tracks that share a fair few similarities with the work of the aforementioned Drew Lustman. It's most apparent in the manner that Shanghai Den marries brushed garage-influenced rhythms and woofer-bothering bass with a uniquely Eastern tone. With R&S offerings falling mainly in the techno camp of late, this is a welcome surprise.

Clouds From Outer Space
Jungle Interlude
MIDI Fighter
Space Compartment
Stolen Dub
Trippy Patterns
Review: First appearing on Visionist's Lost Codes label in 2012, Birmingham-based producer Filter Dread was also responsible for one of last year's most interesting cassette releases in the Space Loops tape for the No Corner imprint. Although nominally linked to instrumental grime, the Space Loops cassette suggested that the producer's influences drew from jungle, rave and ambient just as much. Here Filter Dread re-emerges in triumphant fashion with the MIDI Space 12" for long-running UK label Ramp Recordings, which brandishes six tracks that showcase his individual take on the UK hardcore continuum. There's plenty of diversity in sound here too, with the dizzying darkside styles of "Clowns from Outer Space" and "MIDI Fighter" contrasting notably with the self explanatory "Jungle Ambience" and the stuttering sub bass delight of "Stolen Dub".

Buzzin10 - "Deceived"
Sully - "Feel It"
Point B - "Comfort Zone"
Warlock - "Too Late"
Review: Hard to pronounce, even harder to ignore and impossible not to like, Frijsfo continue to delve deeper and deeper into bass-tickled compositions with these four floor-friendly treats. Buzzin10 get sexy with a 4/4 garage cut that lays lush organs over a paranoid backdrop, Sully's "Feel It" takes us right back to the fuzzy two-step soundtrack to the turn of the century, Point B's "Comfort Zone" explores the icy messages of early Metalheadz via a Radioactiveman style bump n' shuffle breakbeat and Warlock closes the show on an awesome Vibert style acid wonk. Beautiful.

Review: Yes, yes, yes! Tape issuing Bristol enclave presents From The Reels, a wonderfully packaged collection that transfers three of their best cassette releases to the vinyl format. Consisting of four records, including three heavyweight 12?s and one fluorescent 7?, From The Reels: A No Corner Collection features the dizzying ride through a cybernetic future that is Modern Malaise by Lily, the fragile techno structures of El Kid's Labyrinths EP, and the zero-gravity grime and jungle of Filter Dread's Space Loops. In addition there is a 7" that features Vessel and Killing Sound remixes of "We Need Mirrors" El Kid. ** Also included a download code to get the digital files for the Lily, Filter Dread and El Kid releases **

Review: Having built up to this release through his recent work on Houndstooth, Ross Tones now finally offers up his debut solo album, magnifying the cinematic qualities in his music across 50 minutes of singular electronica. The instrumentation throughout Mosaic provides the soul to the record, from haunting string strikes to wild samples of exotic sources, while the electronic elements come on in balanced tones, neatly defined and arranged so as to make for a snug fit. There are plenty of arresting vocal moments from bewitching vocalists including Addah Kaleh on the pivotal cut "The Tempest", but it's Tones' incredibly detailed vision that makes this an unmissable album.

Review: Lisbon-based producer Lake Haze returning to the bastion that is the UTTU imprint with Force Of Nature, an excursion into pure UK styles, fusing classic grime, house, garage and dubstep into a fresh-sounding whole. The elemental names should tell you all you need to know about how fierce these tracks are, with "Tsunami Riddim" and "Lightning Riddim" primed for club play. There's another side though in "Brandy Riddim" and "Vapor Riddim" which takes things back to the '90s - another essential grip from DJ Haus' label!
