In Brackets
5AM
Voices
Rare Bloom
Review: Ever spreading their wings and snapping up labels left right and centre, Dark Sky move on from their recent turn for Tectonic to deliver an EP for Mister Saturday Night that applies their complex and engaging approach to housier domains. First track "In Brackets" is a refined beast, tapping into the spiritual vein of artists like DJ Qu but employing a richer tapestry of sounds to intone the mystery. "5AM" by comparison is a much snappier proposition, sporting a vintage garage beat and cheeky trills of synth, while "Voices" burrows into a plethora of vocal micro-samples with purpose and a lot of layering. "Rare Bloom" rounds the EP off in stunning fashion with a measured roller that keeps the beat ticking steadily so that accomplished swells of synth can draw you in on a bold and thrilling journey of a track.

So Submissive
Stronger With You
Stronger With You (Waze & Odyssey Street Tracks remix)
Review: The So Submissive EP sees some of 90s house revivalists most ubiquitous characters collide on a clear red slab of vinyl. It marks the return to Madtech for the dreadlocked Citizen following his debut for Kerri Chandler's label last year and comes backed with a remix from like minded duo Waze & Odyssey. Citizen is on typical form here, with both the title track and "Stronger With You" characterised by doleful vocal treatments, crisp drumming and pensive, soul infused melodic touches. Waze & Odyssey elect to rework the latter track, perhaps due to the more interesting vocal sample and offer a more jacking rendition that comes replete with a fidgeting undercurrent.

Slope
Maximum Busy Muscle
Review: All has been quiet on the release front at Hessle HQ since the outstanding WMD that was Raw Code by Pev & Kowton was issued earlier this year. Such was the magnificence of "Raw Code", Hessle Audio could feasibly not release another record this year and you'd say it was a triumphant 12 months. However, Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound clearly have other plans with the overdue return of Joe the first of two releases from Hessle in the next few months. The publicity shy producer's prior material for Hessle and Hemlock remain some of the multi-faceted bass scene's most distinctive music to date, taking influence from jazz and broken beat as much as it does from the grime and jungle being recomposed by his Hessle pals. Two tracks deep, HES025 features the emotive yet abstract house of "Slope" and "Maximum Busy Muscle", which combines ramshackle drums held together with stray horn samples and masking tape.

Steam

Crack
Review: Nonplus head Boddika makes a triumphant return to Swamp 81 label with the four-track doublepack Steam. Loefah's label have been somewhat quiet of late; perhaps opting to put more energy into the house-focused School imprint, whilst Boddika has also been keeping a low profile, with the flurry of collaborations with Joy Orbison last year evidently giving way due to taking over the reins of the Nonplus label and overseeing its mammoth Think & Change compilation. The presence of this four track double plater is welcome then and the tracks will be familiar to those who keep a close eye on the producer's movements, with "Steam" and "Black" ripped to YouTube back in early 2012 and "Crack" appearing later last year; only "Heat" is comparatively recent. As is to be expected with Boddika, the four tracks occupy the weighty end of the bass-techno intersection.

Immunity
Review: We never quite know what to expect from leftfield explorer Jon Hopkins, but we know it will be worth a listen. Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

Walk On In (feat Ratcatcher)
Trife (part II)
Review: If you've attended a Numbers rave, boat party or festival stage over the course of 2013 you've probably left craving the Gospel-powered beast with the killer vocal hook that Jackmaster or Spencer dropped. Months of singing "Walk On In, Walk On In, Walk On In..." to yourself can now be consigned to memory as the Glaswegian powerhouse finally issue the track in question, "Walk On In" a collaboration between Berlin-dwelling Welshman and Ratcatcher, and it has modern club classic written all over it. Daneeka's well honed dancefloor versatility is demonstrated on the flip with "Trife Pt. II" a darker and more subtle house production.

Livity
Review: Although Peverelist was last spotted with Kowton on Hessle Audio where they delivered the blinding "Raw Code", this new solo outing is the first release for the Livity Sound imprint he runs with Kowton and Asusu in nearly a year. Once again taking on the truncated Pev moniker adopted for his recent Kowton collaboration, "Aztec Chant" continues the producer's recent forays into slower rhythmic terrain, combines the producer's unmistakably dubby breakbeats with an primitive, atonal melody. "Livity" meanwhile recalls his Hessle Audio classic "Dance Til The Police Come," sharing a similarly unhinged, ravey quality bolted together with ramshackle piano chords. TIP!

Bring (4:57)
Curtains (4:43)
Review: ** RANDOMER REPRESS ** Rohan of Randomer's return to the Hemlock label is heralded with Bring/Curtains, a club ready 12" described amusingly as "two iceberg sized hunks of pure stereo freeze". Randomer's been relatively busy this year, issuing a Surgeon approved white label and inaugurating Turbo's Sex Tags aping Warehouse series but it's great to see him back on Untold's Hemlock label for whom Randomer's done some of his best work. "Bring" will be familiar to those who regularly listen to Hessle Audio's Rinse FM show, first making a recorded appearance way back in May, demonstrates an icier, slightly deranged side to Randomer that's not been seen before. Accompanying it is "Curtains" which is blessed with the following wonderful description from the Hemlock press office; "A slo-mo steppers cut that's darker and sparser than George Osborne's mailbox on Valentines. Rendering
Review: Despite being one third of the Livity Sound live show alongside Peverelist and Kowton, Asusu has only one entry in their label's discography, the excellent Sister 12? which was released at the tail end of 2011 which paired the WAX style house of the title cut with some flipside brooding garage-techno mechanics. After numerous Livity drops from Pev or Kowton, Asusu returns to the fore in glorious fashion with Velez, which continues his label associates recent lineage of grime and jungle-inspired productions. "Velez" sees Asusu experiment more with weighty broken techno rhythms, all stitched together with tumbling percussion of the jungle-inspired variety, while "Rendering" is a more typical deep house track characterised by its dubby Bristolian textures.

Lola
Power Drumsss
Starburst
Review: It's quite typical of the quality that runs through the Hessle Audio label that a year where they've been at their quietest release-wise, the three 12"s issued still remain some of their most memorable yet. After an early year gun shot in the shape of Pev & Kowton's all conquering Raw Code, the more recent knockout from Hessle secret weapon Joe is now complemented by the return of Pearson Sound. Typically on point, HES026 features three outlandish grime and techno-inspired rhythm tracks that are stamped indelibly with Pearson Sound's sonic DNA. The deliciously lopsided "Power Drumsss" is a real highlight, sounding throughout like it's on the point of all out malfunction as it descends the 808 scales, whilst a press release that reveals "Lola" was inspired by Kennedy adopting a cat he found in "an abandoned Rimowa suitcase" suggests Ben UFO is not the only feline fanatic at Hessle HQ.

Review: Given the busy, junked up collage nature of his two albums for Planet Mu as Ital, Daniel Martin-McCormack and Workshop might not feel like the most immediate of bed fellows. However the 18th Workshop release sees the celebrated American producer return to the sort of music he was exploring on the excellent Culture Clubs 12" for his own Lovers Rock label in 2011 and indeed adopt some of the dustier, stripped back traits of the label. The slow beatwork of "Ice Drift (Stalker mix)" comes joined with warm tones and trippy textures, the ambient "Slower Degrees Of Separation" has all the hallmarks of a Madteo instrumental, while "Pulsed" offers the most dancefloor focused cut.

Review: Speak to Bok Bok about Night Slugs and it's clear grime has played a huge influence on what they do so it makes total sense that the label should coax some music out of grime originator for their White Label series. Known for Known for seminal beats such as "Anger Management" and "Real", P Jam's return from a four year production hiatus looks to spread further than this 12" with contributions to the forthcoming Grime 2.0 compilation and Terror Danjah's Hardrive label primer too. The A Side has P Jam dropping a 130bpm jungle cover of a famous Frankie Knuckles track which you'll immediately recognise when those strings hit - and how good does it sound to hear Amens on a Night Slugs release? Face down P Jam offers a skeletal dub take on the same track which is all about the jagged squarewave bass line.

Review: This Park Days EP from JTC marks the expansion into dedicated artist releases for Mancunian club night and label Hoya:Hoya, whose previous releases have been split EPs that collated material from Ikonika, Eliphino, Ras G and the aforementioned trio of Lone, Illum Sphere and Krystal Klear. JTC is of course one alias used by the multi talented Tadd Mullinix, also recording under the Dabrye, SK-1, Charles Manier and James T Cotton aliases as well as several collaborative projects with fellow Nation luminaries D'Marc Cantu and Melvin 'Traxx' Oliphant III. Four tracks in total; each one highlights just how deep Cotton's scope and abilities go. Cuts such as "Argo" and "Cereal" both resonate with icy Detroitian synths that ripple over crafty beatwork that hints at his very early days as a junglist on Rephlex. "South Brooks" and "Gallup", meanwhile, show an altogether deeper, more house-inclined side to the producer. The former is especially jacking.

Review: Since surfacing last year with a contribution to the New Jack Techno compilation for zeitgeist chasers Turbo, the London based J. This year he inaugurated Untold's techno-focused Pennyroyal label with two 12-inch singles as well as appearing on the OHWL#Ten series from Belgian label Other Heights. J. Acid House
Review: The newly revived Dance Mania gives another shout out to the juke scene it inspired in its first incarnation, hooking up with Traxman for six low brow rough riders that sport a direct lineage back to the ghetto house roots of the Chicago-centric sound. The oft-visited rave staple Pacman gets a look in here with a simple edit approach that twists the theme to a tom-heavy juke context, while "Getting Da Hoe" goes for a more swung kind of slammer that rests heavy on the vocal sample. It's not all primal drum machine freak-outs though, as "1976" beautifully attests with its perfect chopping up of funk hooks that oozes a finesse not common in juke, but don't worry as "Acid House" sets the phasers back to annihilation swiftly after.

Kowton vs Julio Bashmore - "Mirror Song" (techno remix)
Review: n what might have seemed like an unlikely pairing at first, Kowton and Julio Bashmore join forces for a Bristolian crossover that yields the perfect kind of hybrid madness for these times. "Mirror Song" comes on with the gritty percussive dread that embodies Kowton's more recent output, while the more insistent house groove and catchy sample hooks show the poppier sensibilities Bashmore has brought to the table. "And What?" is less easy going, fraying and splintering into that broken snare snarl that could only come from Kowton, dodging any kind of melody in favour of industrial textures and morose bass stabs. For those needing a more linear kind of beat to work with, the "techno remix" of "Mirror Song" should fit the bill very nicely indeed.

Nobody Else (Ghosts On Tape remix)
Tessera 04 (Robert Hood remix)
Review: Fresh faced deep house bod Contakt slides over to the equally youthful Icee Hot imprint and brings a healthy amount of techno influence with him in the process. "Tessera 04" in particular shimmers with dubbed-out chords and a stripped down beat, looking for a more spiritual kind of headspace whilst lead track "Nobody Else" gets busy with bright piano chords pounding out at a militant pace. It's a fusion of energy and depth that should work wonders in the dance, while Ghosts On Tape shed the deepness and focus on rave hysteria in a stomping house stylee for their remix of "Nobody Else". That leaves it to Robert Hood to get technical on an intricate and masterful remix of "Tessera 04" like only he can.

Review: In a rich and varied career thus far, collaborations and pseudonyms have characterised the multi faceted work of Mark Pritchard with Troubleman, Global Communication, Africa Hi-Tech and Harmonic 313 just four that spring to mind. No more it seems, as Pritchard aligns on Warp for a series of 12" releases under his given name that look to include all facets of his sonic palette in the lead up to a full album. The four track Ghosts 12" kicks this exciting phase off; The A Side pairs the ragga bruk styles of "Manabadman" with the hyper-kinetic footwork-Dtown Techno hybridity of the title track, whilst on the flip "Duppies" is a mammoth duel between 'ardcore sonics and Juke rhythmics - watch out for that bassline!! Final cut "Get Wyld" winds down the mood for a thuggish Dystopian half step finish.

Stenny - "How The Story Ends"
Review: Ilian Tape's milestone 20th release sees a similar combination to what we saw on Project Squared's not-so milestone, but landmark, 7th release. Basically Stenny and Andrea have hooked up in the same way Tom Diciccio and Kowton did to produce a self-and-collaboratively produced Untitled EP. A1 is Stenny & Andrea together; a gritty and soulful combination of house, techno and tinges of electro. The inner A sees Andrea go solo and produce something as rough and spacious as what you could expect from Kyle Hall, while over on the B-side, Andrea fills in the gaps with extra bass, drums and stressed synths. Stenny wraps up the EP with the quick BPMs and crushed sonics of the aptly "How The Story Ends".

Review: Whilst producers starting their own labels are an everyday occurrence at the moment, you still have to pay that extra bit of attention when someone of Pangaea's calibre makes such a move. The name Hadal is apparently inspired by the Hadal zone at the bottom of the ocean which is in keeping with the prehistoric supercontinent from which Kev McAuley takes his own production name. The Hessle Audio decision maker himself helms the first release Viaduct which brandishes a triplet of productions that further refine the singular combination of jungle and techno that was displayed with superb results on last year's Release double pack. "Mission Creep" in particular stands out thanks to a treated vocal sample that has echoes of Pangaea's Hemlock classic "Hex".

Review: While Bristol's bass scene usually heralds the D&B and dubstep crews as the champions, there's a fine line of deeper, more experimental bass artists in the Wild West too. Forget Me Not are a great place to start... "Should Be Stronger" ignites with deep house panache and a Hercules & Love Affair style vocal before shuffle some hi-hats and a soaking wet sub make their way into the mix. "Big Tings" continues this garage flex with a Ramsey & Fen style four-to-the-floor workout, complete with a very authentic vocal sample. "How Long" brings us to a fittingly sophisticated conclusion thanks to swooning breakbeats and deep jazz pad work. Beautiful... You won't forget these dudes in a hurry.

"Targa" leads the charge with a claustrophobic and yet utterly heart-wrenching techno workout, letting the rhythm pump and suck underneath vaporous gases while the delicate notes and synth strings speak of all the romantic leanings of the most classic Detroit techno. "Glare" uses equally seductive melodic content, although the sinister strings that hover in the background add a dark edge to the broken drum workout, swirling up a maelstrom of mixed emotions with the kind of difficult-to-pin-down verve that makes Untold as essential as ever.

Although his debut from last year demonstrated an atmospheric, syncopated style of bass music, "Stutter" shows a marked progression into swung techno styles, with a weighty track full of concrete rhythms and glassy synths; "Murmur" is similarly powerful, throwing acid flecks and sunken vocals into the mix. Meanwhile, Apes & Seb Wildblood offer their own take on "Stutter", tempering some of the original's more ferocious attributes with some subtle dub techno elements, while James Fox refixes "Murmur" into a slinky, mid-tempo house groover, whose swelling synths offer something considerably deeper.

With the themes and concepts behind the album still something of a closely guarded secret, NS fans will no doubt see this as some degree of insight into what's to come with alternate versions of tracks from A/B Infinity placed either side. A 'reduced' take on "Water" by Psutka himself sits on the A Side, and the quite vivid Night Slugs description of the track as "a subterranean electrical storm expressed as acid-tech" rings true; a vicious acid line coils menacingly, throbbing with modulated intensity as the track ripples forward. Review: Having been released digitally earlier this year, Jacques Greene's masterful return to Luckyme is granted the vinyl issue the cover art deserves. Listening to this three track EP, it's all too easy to see how far the Montreal based Greene has developed as a producer since he broke through back in 2010 with The Look EP for the Scottish label. If you've been paying close attention to Greene's production work and general direction since then (starting his own Vase label) you'll understand the Canadian is slowly maturing into a producer in the traditional sense, increasingly happy to step behind the buttons and work an arrangement around a vocalist. Such is the case on the title track to On Your Side which features the tremulous vocal tones of How To Dress Well's Tom Krell and "Faithful" which pairs a bubbling acid flecked broken house shuffle with Oliver Day Soul's gospel style delivery. Final track "Quicksand" demonstrates Greene has lost none of his talent for snaking vocal edits and oven warm melodic leads.

Like much of Keysound's recent output, Old Skool Methods consists largely of bass tunes clocking in around 130 BPM, with clandestine rhythms, murky basslines and snapping snares that come accompanied by the kind of wide-eyed, early jungle nostalgia that should appeal to both youngsters and old heads alike. "Hybrid" sets out the formula, pitching a sparse but powerful, speaker-rattling bassline against jaunty rhythms, rave piano stabs, deep atmopsherics and classic vocal samples. J-One collaboration "Sounds" sits somewhere between dubstep and classic two-step, while "Sphynx" rolls along on a wave of "Pacific 808" chords and old skool rhythms. With its pitched-down jungle breaks and paranoid mood, "Lost Methods" is pretty tasty, too.

White Noise (HudMo remix)
Review: With the debut Disclosure album on the horizon the hype juggernaut cranks up a notch with this remix from Hudson Mohawke. Clearly implementing the Lana Del Rey formula, Hud Mo's take on "White Noise" comes in the aftermath of a slew of similarly high profile remixes of the brotherly duo (Joe Goddard, Dixon and Jamie Jones amongst them) Given his widely professed love for female fronted RnB, Kanye's mate Hudmo is a perfect producer to approach "White Noise", the Lawrence brother's track with Aluna George's Aluna Francis and the results are revelatory. It's all about the drums here which snap and flutter in all the right places as Disclosure's original melodies percolate and Francis' vocal gets mangled.
