(In The End) The Ghost Ran Out Of Memory
Sublimation
Review: ** Repress ** Prince of Denmark inaugurates the new techno offshoot FORUM, from the Weimar-based operation Giegling, which takes over from their previous techno sub-label, Staub, which ended with last year's 8-10 EP from Vril. This three disc LP has been a long time coming and it delivers the goods; each record features one full track on the A-side and two tracks on the B, which suggests Giegling cut no corners in giving Prince Of Denmark the 12" real estate his music deserves. All tracks leading up to the LPs penultimate track, the euphoric "(In The End) The Ghost Ran Out Of Memory", effortlessly move, transmute and evolve through magically minimal arrangements of dub techno, deep and streamlined house and that undecipherable Giegling sound. Prince Of Denmark's The Body is one of, if not, the, techno album of the year.

Nanendi
Review: After the recent announcement of a forthcoming L.B Dub Corp album, Luke Slater's other alias, Planetary Assault Systems, provides its first transmission of 2013. Fans of "Bell Blocker" from PAS' stellar The Messenger album from 2011 will instantly warm to the cold chimes of "No Exit", while pink noise cushions the brooding, pitch-dark groove of "Undertow". Slater then introduces agitated mind games on the EPs inner B-side with "Nanendi", which sounds like a school of crickets trapped in a haunted cathedral of distant Gregorian chant.

Jay Bliss - "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" (original mix)
Review: OCH has a strong pedigree of collaborations with fellow underground stalwart Jay Bliss the latest to share space on a Autoreply record with the label boss. Bliss should be known to many as the co-owner of Electrique Boutique alongside Markus Homm, for a long time the only vinyl outlet in Romania, and his discography makes for impressive reading these days. Recent times have seen Mr Bliss share record space with the likes of Skudge and Petre Inspirescu on respected imprints like 20:20 Vision, All Inn, Hudd Traxx and Fear Of Flying. AUTO 015 kicks off with a bouncy rework of OCH's "Scammell" from Bliss featuring sub-aqua sound-scapes and sonar blips on an instantly playable US inspired groove. OCH's original has a distinctly liquid approach possibly referencing the work of LTJ Bukem and Good Looking over techno framework. Jay's main offering "Men Are From Mars" is sexy controlled acid which OCH shifts up a gear for peak time floor-play layering the original TB303 patterns to thundering climax. Road-tested on Eleven Club, Tokyo's Alpha System's custom speakers.

Step Or Stone (Breath Or Bone)
I Know Your Face, Heroine
Review: The ascendant production career of Brighton's Leon Vynehall is demonstrated once more with a debut release on Martyn's 3024 label. According to the DC dwelling Dutchman, the genesis of the Open EP dates back to the pair sharing a gig in Bristol, with Martyn impressed by Vynehall's Djing skills but not fully aware of his talent as a producer. Requesting Vynehall send him some new music, four of the five tracks Martyn received feature on the Open EP with three present on this 12" edition. If you're familiar with Vynehall's previous output for Aus, Well Rounded and Manmakemusic you'll be eager to wrap your senses around this release, yet the trademark rugged swagger is complemented by an increased attention to detail that hints Vynehall should no longer be cast as a mere 'up and comer'.

Upekah
Karuna
Mudita
Review: Delsin's delivery of the Upekah 12" from Son.Sine is contender for rerelease of the year, ending for many DJs the long and hopeless search for the EP's stand out track of the same name. You can't blame those lost trying to find the title as it was originally released by New Zealand label Nurture as their fifth record (of eight) in 2000. This said, nothing should be taken away from the mellow chords, oceanic soundscapes and slower beats of the EP's other tracks "Karuna" and "Mudita". A truly seminal release that's been given second life by the marvellous Delsin.

Balls Of Steel
Review: Mr Beau Wanzer has already been responsible for some memorable music in 2013 as part of both Mutant Beat Dance and Streetwalker, issuing releases on Light Sounds Dark and Cititrax that rank amongst the favourites of the Juno review staff. Having previously appeared on LIES as part of MBD, Wanzer now makes his full debut with this much awaited self titled three track EP. Ever since Ron Morelli dropped it on a Benji B show earlier this year, the clamour for "Balls Of Steel" has steadily grown to boiling point and the track sounds all the more impressive running up the stylus of a 1210 than it does on shoddy iPlayer bitrate. Based around a unique vocal hook, Wanzer's basically done a Florian Kupfer and delivered unto LIES a hit track that shouldn't really be a hit track. The functional rhythmic nature of "Balls Of Steel" is replicated in the scratchy "Two Orders" whilst "Outside Auto" is a lumbering EBM number reminiscent of Wanzer's work with Traxx.

Blue
Blue (dub)
Review: Moritz von Oswald Trio catch up on the amount albums they've released for Honest Jon's by delivering a new and second EP for the label called Blue. It's a return to dub techno in its most purest form, which is, of course, the spacious minimalisms of mid-90s Basic Channel. Welcomingly, "Blue" is dryer than ever with a smooth groove that's peppered with caustic stabs of saw wave, while the B-side's dub version is slowed down to a 2013 synthesised version of something by dub reggae originators The Upsetters. TIP!

Review: Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann returns with a second album for Ostgut in the shape of the simply titled Dettmann II. Unlike Hollywood, this musical sequel to his debut self titled LP of three years packs just as hefty a punch and arrives with Marcel at his busiest. In addition to overseeing his MDR imprint and putting out a steady stream of EPs for Ostgut Ton, he's contributed two singles to Modeselektor's 50 Weapons as well as mixing an entry into Music Man's Conducted mix series. Hot on the heels of an entry into Bleep's techno-centric Green Series, Dettmann II arrives and follows a similar formula to his LP length debut. Expect a mixture of ambient soundscapes and minimalist experimental cuts going up against more uncompromising dancefloor material, and there's a high profile cast of supporting names involved too; Emika provides vocals on "Seduction" while multi-monikered Rene Pawlowitz and Levon Vincent have assisted in the production of the tracks "Aim" and "Outback".

Craft - "Seq Interrupt"
SeeLow - "Fatal Chord"
Review: Introduced to the world via the following amusingly tongue in cheek Hardwax write up, "Well equalized, effectively waxed DJ tool killer Techno," this two track The Final Experiment XX1 12" is of course the latest transmission from Shed HQ. A man known to adopt numerous aliases, Mr Rene Pawlowitz has been absent from the want lists for a hot minute so it's about time we got some DJ tools to tussle over. Pressed up on his new label The Final Experiment, both tracks here bear the hallmarks of a Pawlowitz production; "Seq Interrupt" is a brutish production where muscular drama filled drums grind against aching synth lines whilst "Fatal Chord" takes a more stripped back approach. No less a DJ weapon, Pawlowitz utilises just the key components with the darkest moments of Berghain in mind.

Review: The freshly revived Dance Mania reaches its third release of its restarted lifespan with a collection of classic tracks from Chicago veteran Robert Armani. Like the rest of his Dance Mania cohorts, the tracks on Collection are as raw as they come - "Ambulance" is all buzzing 303, squealing synths and rattling drums - but they also explore all sides of the producer's oeuvre, with the chopped up diva of "Give You All", the discofied "Circuit Breaker" and lo-fi 80s vibes of "Muzik Man" all essential for fans of straight up unadulterated club trax.

Dark Side (vocal remix)
Dark Side (Vilod remix)
Review: The last release from legendary Detroit label Metroplex was in 2011, but here it returns in style with a collaboration between label founder Juan Atkins and Basic Channel's Mark Ernestus under the name of Audio Tech. Entitled "Dark Side", the pair's collaborative effort, remixed on the A-side by Metroplex artist Kimyon Huggins, combines Atkins' techno and electro style with Ernestus' dub background into exactly the kind of deep and muggy take on Atkins' sound you'd expect from such a union. Remix duties are handled by another legendary pair, with minimal veteran Ricardo Villalobos and renowned experimentalist Max Loderbauer uniting again under the name Vilod. They transform "Dark Side" into a snaking, dub infused version whose irregular rhythms will please anyone who heard the pair's 2011 Re:ECM album.

80's Drugs
Review: Gerd Janson and Maurice Fulton continue their mutually beneficial partnership with this Running Back 12" edition of DJ Nori's wonderful Bubbletease debut We Don't Know. Originally released digitally earlier this summer, Nori's four tracks were co-produced by Fulton and, as with anything that blessed with Maurice's touch, are predictably excellent. There's a touch of melancholic, acid-flecked stargazing in the shape of "Spaceg" (all heady synth melodies, fuzzy bass and 808 cowbells), some out-there, beatless space calypso (the unwieldy "We Don't Know"), and a mighty chunk of Syclops-ish wonk-jack ("80s Drugs"). Oh, and a moody, Detroit-influenced Fulton remix of "Happy Sunday" that breaks into a space disco jam near the end.

When The Mind Stops
Review: Don't be confused, the Turbo artist Gesaffelstein hasn't forgone his attempts to oversee a revival of electro clash and signed up for Aroy Dee's label. The Old Villagers EP marks the debut release from the mysterious Gerstaffelen, an apparent newcomer whose mastery of production belies this and fits right in on the Amsterdam label's remit. The four tracks here have apparently been road-tested by Aroy Dee for months and the label will surely be nudging Gerstaffelen for more! From the sumptuous Wolfers at mid tempo pace of the title track proceedings veer deeper into more frenzied, twisted territory as the run out groove of Side B draws closer. It's hard to choose between "Game On Major" and "Little Green Munchkin Men" for our favourites of this release - both are superbly unhinged!

Review: Stuart Li has been releasing music as Basic Soul Unit since 2003 across labels such as Dolly, Mathematics, Creme, Nonplus, and Still Music, but has only just put his toes into the murky waters of label ownership with the Lab.our imprint. The first release comes from the producer himself; although Li has flirted with both deep house and techno in the past, the three tracks on the label's first release seem to be more aligned with the latter, with the mid-tempo piano tones of "Innershell" soon giving way to a pulsing analogue bass, and the fast, electro-inspired rhythms and irregular chords of "Frack" and heaving mechanical acid thump of "Earwerm" providing some of the producer's weightiest, most club-focused material to date.

Plumes Of Chasm
Review: Sigha's Our Circula Sound label returns for what might be its most impressive record to date, the debut of Positive Centre. Taking its cues from the likes of Andy Stott, Samuel Kerridge, Fishermen and the rest of the techno axis exploring slower tempos, none of the tracks on An Assembly go much above 115BPM, but they're filled with atmosphere and barely concealed dread; the title track sees blackened bass tentacles rippling around thick kick drums, while "Otherwise Black" sees droning textures surrounded by dub mechanics. Tracks like "The Stations Of Section" and "Plumes Of Chasm" meanwhile sound an nihilistic exploration of watery dub, like Porter Ricks' impressionistic undersea realms destroyed by a deepwater oil spill. An impressive debut and a producer to watch closely.

Review: Perc's clearly a busy man these days; with his Perc Trax empire currently expanded to include two sub labels (Perc Trax Ltd and Submit) the revered UK industrial techno producer has joined forces with an equally respected Stateside counterpart on another label. The self explanatory AX&P operation sees Sonic Groove's Adam X align with Perc for a series of intermittent studio collaborations, with the decision to release under this joint banner due to the packed schedules of their respective labels. It's a collaboration that's apparently been in gestation for two years and it shows on this superb debut three track 12" AMPERE & OHM which brings out the best of both. Lead track "Coulomb" is a throbbing mass of tunnelling, weighty techno with sparse percussion snapping away sadistically as proceedings rumble menacingly forth. On the B Side "Dines" is wound tighter, unfurling with deadly precision into a worming DJ tool that takes on increasingly psychedelic qualities as it progresses, whilst "Joule" ensures the relentless nature is kept up but offers a more rhythmic based insight into the AP&X combination.

Review: Last year was an uncharacteristically prolific twelve months for Terrence Dixon, putting his name to an impressive range of original and reissued material for the likes of Thema, Knotweed Records, Delsin, Harbour City Sorrow, Chronicle and Rush Hour. The centrepiece of Dixon's annus mirabilis was undoubtedly his third album and classic in the making From The Far Future 2 for Tresor, and the momentum built off the back of the Detroit native's activities last year has seeped into what's becoming an equally productive 2013. News of Dixon's decision to launch the Reduction imprint first filtered through last December, although it wasn't until July that the label's debut transmission The Rewriting Of An Expression Into A Simpler Form was released. A second Reduction transmission now arrives in the shape of Reducible Expressions, brandishing three untitled Population One cuts that demonstrate the sort of restraint and obscurity that have made Dixon such a singular figure on Detroit's sonic landscape.

Review: Excellent self titled album of material from the man Charles Manier on the Nation label which has finally surfaced after word of its release first appeared on distribution lists last year. You will probably know the name Charles Manier from the excellent Bang Bang Lover 12" issued by Ghostly back in 2002 and this album draws from an archive of material recorded around the same period at Ballard and Ridgewood-Cantullinix Studios in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Heavily influenced by the primitive sonics of Liaisons Dangereuses and the short lived CH BB project that preceded them, this ten track set swings viciously between grotty EBM, experimental wave sounds and proto techno movements with the C Side hogging "Wasps" a real centrepiece. Essential sonics for those that travel the path less ordinary.

Upton's Cerberus EP released last year provided one of the Power Vaccum's most incendiary moments, thanks to its furious industrial beats and overdriven 303 lines, and now Power Vacuum follows up that release with seven tracks of gnarly acid and hardstyle drums for EDMX's LP Frozen Stomp. Transfer #1 (Shifted remix)
Review: With each release Yves De May is slowly breaking away from his Sandwell District-alumni status. After releasing just the one remix (of Sawf) in 2012, Transfer is the enigmatic producer's second release this year after the Metrics EP for Opal Tapes. This 12" for Modal Analysis involves three Transitions, with the lapping waves of white noise in "Transition #1" surprisingly offering something soothing, not harsh and malicious. Like a wild beast stirred from a stupor, "Transition #2" grows into a solidified and rolling remake of the former, with skerricks of static buzz creating continuity between tracks. The third Transition takes up the entire B-side, and with drums seemingly inspired by Vatican Shadow or Regis, it's the EP's culminating track that fuses the best elements of each Transition into the one cohesive piece.

Review: ** Repress ** Thriving in his emergent Trevino moniker, Marcus Intalex makes a prominent step further up the chain with an appearance on Ben Klock's label Klockworks, further cementing his authority as a producer of techno means. "Forged" has no doubt had plenty of test runs at Berghain with its stalking, growling bassline and ever-pressing forward momentum, crafted out of immaculate elements to do all the right kinds of damage. "Uptight" is a more tripped-out affair, with minimal drums and an acidic pulse hovering just below the surface where you have to submerge your head to catch it. "Doldrums" meanwhile shimmers and shudders with a Reese-sized bassline and intricate percussive ripples to create a hulking beast of track.

Review: Stephan Laubner re-emerges with Cosmic Fluke, only his second STL transmission of 2013 on his own Something label, gathering together another selection of ramshackle house moves and grooves from his deep archives for the 22nd of the vinyl series. Having developed a distinctive sound under the STL banner, Laubner doesn't attempt to deviate from his signature approach of four raw beaten down cuts complemented by two locked grooves. Lead track "Body Musique" teases out a jagged hook over suitably dirty drums, whilst "Phasendreher" is pure freaked out mind -f*ck material. The drop to a more slouching tempo on "Loop A" feels like a slack jawed Madlib instrumental whilst B Side opener "Loose Orbit" is the most overt example of Laubner marrying abstract rhythmics with sumptuous textural detail on the record and is a real highlight.
