Track 2
Review: Parisian label Clek Clek Boom inaugurated their white label series with figurehead French Fries at the helm for two bass- heavy edits that have been causing certain sections of the internet to lose their ish for some time now. On the A Side Thomas Bangalter's Roule classic "What To Do" gets rewired with that trademark Clek Clek Boom rudeness, sounding not dissimilar to a DJ Technics edit, all percolating low end and face slapping drum claps. On the flip, Amerie's much edited "One Thing" gets eased out into a swaggering and heavily pressurised rhythm that doesn't sound dissimilar to your man Blakey's work as Harmonimix.

Trojan
Pacific
Review: Fresh the success of his debut release for 2nd Drop, rising star South London Ordnance returns on Well Rounded for another pair of hybrids ready for the floor. "Trojan" starts off with a charming salvo of piano chords before dropping into a churning bassline which adds some UKG flex to its deeper vibes. "Pacific" meanwhile is an expert piece of bowel loosening darkroom techno with a Chicago house interlude that we can imagine going off in the confines of Plastic People as much as it could on a sunshine drenched boat party. Big tip!

Tempted (F+CK Tonto edit)
Softly Softly
Review: "He'd rob his own gran" says Ten Thousand Yen in the press release for this long awaited drop from Mickey Pearce. Although we can't verify on the sociopathic tendencies (or otherwise) of Mr Pearce, we can say that "Tempted (F+ck Tonto edit)" is even ruder than his recent Swamp81 missive, hitting hard in the rhythm department and coming complete with one of the best one note melodies of the year so far. "Softly, Softly" on the other hand is a slowed down percussive workout with subtle Afropop undertones but no less ferocious. Big stuff and we don't have to tell you this won't hang around for long.

Uncomfortably Numb
About Midday
Review: Released by the fledgling label grown out of the popular dance blog We Are Blah Blah Blah, the ridiculously young Alfie makes a killer contribution to the grimy techno/UK bass scene with this two-tracker that's already garnered support from Four Tet, Claude Von Stroke and Addison Groove. On a militant tech tip, "Uncomfortably Numb" rocks a rush of pattering hats, colourful slow release pads and some seriously deft arrangements, while "About Midday" is a gloriously gonzoid thump of 808s and skeletal melodies. Hugely impressive stuff - these have a long shelf-life indeed.

Night
Brawl
Review: "Tigers didn't raise him but he bears all the mysteries of the wild world inside of him" is the mystical description 50 Weapons lay on the shoulders of Parisian DJ and producer Bambounou who helms the latest 12" on the rising Clek Clek Boom imprint. If you're not familiar with the brilliantly monikered Bambounou, then you're gonna want to be after indulging in this double dose of diverse bass dynamism. Lead track "Night" dips it's toes in the classic UK Garage sound whilst being dominated by the thick bass tones and rave strings that push things forward, whilst "Brawl" is a rowdy concoction of grime and house.

Silo Pass (Spyro remix)
Silo Pass (Vjuan Allure remix)
Charisma Theme (BOK Own remix)
Review: After the success of the original Southside EP last year, Bok Bok has called upon his mates to rework some of the lead cuts with results that stretch across the board. Sir Spyro has some filthy bass at the forefront of his playful reworking of "Silo Pass", while the horns get teased in the appropriate places to great effect. Vjuan Allure also remixes the track but instead focuses on dry beats working around a UK Funky template, with only scattered effects left to fill in the gaps. Bok Bok's own remix of "Charisma Theme" piles the tension on high with dread strings and a snappy dispersal of percussion.

Review: Ikonika returns with her first new material in almost two years, and its absolutely blinding. The title track takes her typically funky approach in the rhythm department and drapes ice cold sheets of electrode synths over the top, making audible the Starfox inspired Mode 7 SNES vector graphics on the cover. On the flip, "Cold Soaking" delivers jagged shards of bass and crystalline melody, jutting off at obtuse angles, while "PR812" completes the trio of videogame inspired beats, with a searching melody that sounds like its come straight out of a Japanese RPG, albeit with jackhammer beats that show the producer remains peerless.

Quest
The 3rd
Review: The unstoppable march of Night Slugs continues apace as their Club Constructions series starts to take shape with these three cuts from Lil Silva. Unlike L-Vis 1990's starkly functional jackers in volume 1, it's not quite apparent what sets these tracks apart as specific "club constructions", but no matter, they hit where it counts. "Quest" rolls with a mean sinking bassline, while the beat jerks and snags. "The 3rd" is the real standout track though, grating on a maddening groove programmed from way out in leftfield, keeping things sparse and angular but most noticeably twitchy. Boundless joys await in watching people try to dance to this one.

8Bit Romance
They Always Come Back
Give It Up
Cluster
Review: Apollo seem to be unstoppable in their surge of fresh releases representing the UK post-everything circuit, and next up is Submerse with some deadly conglomerating funk. "8Bit Romance" sees heavyweight LA swagger (via a hip-hop rhythm) get augmented with nasty lo-res squiggles of synths for a serious bumper of a track. "They Always Come Back" explores the territory first unveiled by early Instra:Mental and DBridge, where emotion and restraint bring out the sensitive side of drum & bass. "Give It Up" follows down a similar slow/fast jam path, leaving it to "Cluster" to swerve back into the cluttered beats of the first track.

MJT (The Torture Trak)
Dark Hearts (Bok Bok remix)
Review: Getting ever more prolific with his own production output, Bok Bok issues forth a new white(ish) label for his Night Slugs imprint that should get the dance standing to attention in shock before losing its collective head in the next instant. "MJT" seems hell bent on twisting up a boogie refrain to breaking point, while the rest of the hyperactive beat daggers in a stop/start call and response melee for the future-minded to relate to in a year's time. His remix of Riz MC is an altogether more low-slung affair, as synthetic strains of elastic bass slither over a gun-cocking set of percussion and drunken locomotion.

Bionic Penguins (Sumsun remix)
Friendship (Legowelt remix)
Review: Lover of all things juke, Chicago's Chrissy Murderbot has plenty to say on the subject and he makes his feelings well known on this latest joint for Halocyan records. "Bionic Penguins" kicks things off with a plush and melodic juke chop up that moves through sophisticated chord progressions for the arpgeggiator to roam around in, while "Friendship" goes down a slightly darker route peppered with hefty amounts of bleep. Sumsun turns "Bionic Penguins" into an emotionally strained UK Funky joint, leaving it to Legowelt to create a serene funk of robotic melodics with lashings of acid and some serious Balearic sass.

Dead Long Time
Aww Shit! (feat DJ Rashad)
Jumbie Yelp
Dancehall Princess
Review: When it was announced that Kingdom was to be running a transatlantic counterpart to Night Slugs, Fade To Mind, there was always the worry that it may simply try to replicate the same formula as its older brother. However, four releases in and it's developed a very singular aesthetic, as demonstrated by this debut EP from Massacooramaan. Pitched somewhere in the middle of Nguzunguzu's psychedelic, tribal R&B and frantic Chicago footwork, Dead Long Time is a wild ride through chopped samples and syncopated beats. "Dead Long Time" is characterised by its sweet marimba melody and auto fire snares, while "Wijd" places pounding kick drums over a gothic choral backdrop. "Bludgeon Riddim" meanwhile takes a hip-hop approach, albeit a threadbare one with gurgling samples, while "Jumble Yelp" is about as heads down as it gets, with an introspective sidechain riff underneath a juke rhythm. Footwork titan DJ Rashad even makes an appearance in "Aww Shit!" fusing his angular rhythmic approach alongside Massacooramaan's weird Middle Eastern melody. Warped, but fantastic stuff.
