Dr No & The Cuban Mafia - "007 Mambo" (Texas Toni Skyfall re-edit)
Sundance Kid - "South American Getaway" (Texas Toni Jazz Dance re-edit)
Review:  Two dancefloor bombs which should make tasty additions to your record box. Dr No & The Cuban Maffia are a six piece outfit from Central Havana who recorded this tribute, ''007 Mambo'' as a nod to Ian Fleming's Mr Bond back in the late 1970s, along with dozens of other cover versions to assist their own compositions in their live repertoire. This version was originally only 90 seconds long, so Texas Toni extends the journey with some funky Latino peak time pressure. On the flip, Sundance Kid drops an infamous soundtrack and Texas Toni re-edits the original parts, disposing of the downtempo elements to concentrate purely on the dancefloor potential.

Once In A Lifetime (Nirobi edit)
Lovely Day (Nirobi edit)
As We Enter (Nirobi edit)
Hypnotron (Nirobi edit)
Review: Square Records offshoot, Nirobi has been there to keep us satisfied all year long, remoulding and re-funking some absolute classics. There's no need for names here as the tracks are all too famous for introductions but the mystery artists behind these mixes have done a spectacular job of refixing "Once In A Lifetime", "Lovely Day", "As We Enter" and oh, go on, Biggie's "Hypnotron" - probably the funkiest bloody re-edit this year!

I Wish
Higher Ground
Sir Duke
Review: Gamm is an established re-edit and mash-up label that's managed to repeatedly dig up new-old gems since the early Noughties. Having previously tackled Marvin Gaye's back catalogue, The Reflex return with a new EP and this time they've gone Stevie Wonder crazy; providing re-workings of three of the great man's tunes. First up is "I Wish", a nine minute elaboration of the one people think is called 'Sneakin' Out The Back Door...' and one which does a lot to reverse the damage done by Will Smith on his "Wild Wild West" tune. "Higher Ground" is teased out and into a more DJ-friendly format and finally things on high with "Sir Duke" (the one everyone thinks is called 'You Can Feel It All Over'), which gets embellished with a subtle 4/4 beat and big, splashy and celebratory cymbals.

Somebody Up There Likes You
A Lovely Way To Die
Review: Wonderful reissue of two of Jackie Wilson's stone cold classics revisited, with Wilson's instrumental backing tracks sitting beneath shiny new vocals from two female heavyweights, namely Erma Franklin & Laverne Baker. Real soul music and nothing short of essential.

El Sueno
Cogiendo Pon
Review: Hats off to US label Electric Cowbell who unleash yet another funky 7 inch from another live band you may have never heard of! Orquesta El Macabeo are a 12 piece salsa band from Puerto Rico established in 2008, with two albums already under their belt. The music they play is not strictly purist salsa but it's heavily influenced by the style, incorporating accessible lyrics, catchy melodies and irresistible instrumentation. Two energetic tunes are presented here; ''El Sueno'' with its scatting Hammond, and on the flipside the more vocal led fast n furious ''Cogiendo''. Perfect examples of the genre for anyone with a smidgeon of interest in Latin music.

Skeleton
Afrobeat Jam
Skeleton (Gilles P Beach mix)
Skeleton (Gilles P Winter dub)
Review: A regular player on London's Afro-jazz scene, Nigeria-born saxophonist Bukky Leo's stint within Fela Kuti's band has served him well - as these four new songs performed with Black Egypt for Agogo Austria prove. Laced with deep, wandering brass lilts, "Skeleton" boasts a rock-hard bassline and an effortless reggae-ish groove, while "Afrobeat Jam" is actually a focused and effusive slice of jazzy instrumentalism. A rare remix by Gilles Peterson is the main sell here though - a transformation of "Skeleton" into an airy house joy, layered with Leo's gravelly vocals.

Funk
Supa Drunk
Love Is Comin'
Review: How can you not fall completely head over heels with a heavily 70s boogie funk tune whose lyrics state 'I'm super drunk off your loving''! K Maxx is none other than multi instrumentalist and San Francisco resident Ken Hopkins, who's been steadily putting out music and producing since the mid 90s. This 45 is the second on the Sweater Funk label and "Supa Drunk" is saturated in the vibes of the golden era of boogie with a falsetto vocal, squelchy analogue sounds and a catchy melody to boot. On the flip the tempo is dropped for ''Love Is Comin' ''- a slow boogie jam awash with keyboard synth sounds and full vocal. Recommended.
