House Fever
Midnight Call
Talkin' About Love
Review: Parisian label My Love Is Underground calls on the service of Kool Vibe, a veteran DJ & clubber from Paris. Although now in his 40s, this is his debut release, but to hijack a well worn phrase, it's been worth the wait. Mr Vibe has clearly spent many a night on discerning dancefloors, and the three tracks on offer here are produced with the steady hand of someone who knows their way around a house tune.
"House Fever" is essentially an ode to all that is good about 90s house, with a cleverly chopped female vocal, tough drums, oven warm chords and a bumpin' bassline. First up on the flip is "Midnight Call", which boasts an addictive chord sequence, while "Talkin' About Love" rounds off a stellar 12" with some seriously deep vibes and sleazy sax.

Review: Delusions Of Grandeur make a stylish entrance into the album game with a sumptuous triple vinyl edition of the 6th Borough Project long player. One Night In The Borough sees Graeme and Craig drop a heady thirteen track selection that covers the sort of warm, low slung, expertly executed multi tempo music which sits between house and disco that the duo have received so much praise for. Stand out tracks include "BURT (The Journey)", a lovely slice of mid-tempo niceness that bumps and shakes in all the right places - the vocal is a killer! Matching this is the twilight house jam "Changin" with Deep Burnt style percussion backed by a killer modulated loop.

Pipe Bomb (1)
Pipe Bomb (2)
Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

Smooth Sketch
Johnny
Review: When one of our favourite labels (read here: Dekmantel) calls on one of our favourite producers (read here: Vakula), it really does put us in a good mood. The on-fire Ukrainian opens proceedings his debut for the boutique Amsterdam based label with "Picture Of You", which unfurls majestically from a warm deep house joint with aquatic melodies and cosy pads to a certified end of night anthem - just wait for those stuttering keys to come in towards the end! "Acid Release" serves as the perfect foil to the grandiose opener, doing exactly what it says on the tin with a dusty bump ridden throughout. Flip over for the vaguely (but accurately) titled "Music", which features a killer female vocal turn that sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a well. "Smooth Sketch" features some off kilter Theo style mindf*ck weirdness while "Johnny" picks up where "Music" left off with that memorable vocal, this time adding some lovely jazzy keys and superbly crafted chords to the sonic equation.

Same Old Place
Tight Genes
Review: For many people, their first exposure to Genius of Time was the 2011 Whitney sampling Clone classic Houston, We Have A Problem yet the Swedish pair had already scored two excellent 12"s for the Aniara label. With both long out of print, Aniara have elected to offer up a timely repress of Same Old Place, the debut Genius Of Time transmission that still sounds remarkably fresh almost four years on. Superbly well crafted, the title track keeps the drums to a minimum to allow those swooping stabs the space to drive proceedings forth, lending "Same Old Place" a sense of the classic without resorting to pastiche. "Tight Genes" demonstrated Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh were equally capable of productions centred around rolling basslines and killer rhythmics. If you missed out first time round, don't make the same mistake now!

Here's Your Trance Now Dance! (Shadow Ray remix)
Review: Shadow Ray is best known in house music circles as the co-producer of the Oasis 1, 13, 13 1/2 and 14 releases with Omar S, although he is also well known to the Ryan Correctional Facility for more nefarious reasons. The Detroit-based producer has spent the past four years at Ryan earning not only a hard knocked life but a trade in Sound Engineering. That was until Alex Smith (aka Omar S) made a presentation to the facility's parole board to commission a remix of his recent hit "Here's Your Trance Now Dance" as part of Ray's work release program! Rumour has it the parole board was inhabited by at least one old school house head, and we're delighted to see Alex's idea come to fruition, with Shadow Ray really nailing it with this remix. Staying true to original's shimmering melody, Ray opts to bolster the bottom end with a raw bassline that creates a nice, fat rolling groove.

Love Confusion
Protect Me
Don't Need No One
Review: Kolour Recordings' Undertones offshoot has impressed to date with outings from heavyweight producers such as Delano Smith, KiNK, Red Rack'em and Moodymanc. To celebrate the milestone tenth release, East Berliner Alex Agore is called upon to grace Undertones with his classy brand of deepness. No stranger to the Detroit label having provided one of their best releases in last year's Promised You Love, Agore is in fine form again as demonstrated on the EP title track. Filled with languid keys, "Love Confusion" is a subtle excursion into simmering house tension made notable by the crafty layers of drums and percussion. Complementing this, the orchestral flourishes of "Protect Me" are underpinned by a delightfully gloopy bassline and skittering drums which lay down the foundations for an excellent vocal hook. On the flip "Don't Need No One" has summer time written all over it, plus the subtle atmospherics that operate deep in the mix sound great when you flip the track at the wrong speed!

Dirty Love
Track 2
Track 3
Review: A welcome return for both Prime Numbers and Linkwood - with the latter presenting three variations on the house theme in the first of two EPs due out this year on Trus'me's excellent label. "Dirty Love" calls shotgun, bossing the A Side with the sort of rough around the edges house flex that demands movement of your feet. Filled with alien noises that flutter around the searing burn, it's the multiplicity of rhythmic shifts that elevate this track into the realms of special. From the euphoric heights of the A Side, the flip transposes you to the murky depths of house music potential with two untitled jams channelling Larry Heard. "Untitled 2" in particular unfurls into something quite bewitching!

As The Reaction Followed I Knew My Feelings Were Right
L'Sable
Review: Dutch export Ion Ludwig's first offering for London's Trelik imprint is a lesson in stripped back, mechanical groove-funk. Title track "As The Reaction Followed I Knew My Feelings Were Right" is a rolling groover with nods to the KDJ and Theo school of deep house, with oven warm harmonies and vintage key sequences and lucid pads pushing the track along for its eight minute duration. Flip over for "L'sable", which takes things in a more hypnotic direction with insistent stabs, a funky bubbling bassline and one of those vocals that you'll be happily humming for days. Forget what people are saying about "old-skool" and "nu-skool" deep house; this is simply house music at its very best.

Can't Get Enough (SoulPhiction remix)
Bio Rhythm (Erdbeerschnitzel remix)
Dirty Haze
Review: After debuting on vinyl in fine style with last year's Tjuma drop Can't Get Enough, Viennese producer Roman Rauch takes a step up the deep house ladder with this tangerine tinged clear twelve inch for the Philpot label. Included are remixes of tracks from the aforementioned debut along with a new production from Rauch himself - and Philpot bossman Soulphiction calls shotgun with a remix of "Can't Get Enough" that rolls across the A Side with the sort of fizzy aplomb you'd expect. Of more interest is the B Side which sees the welcome return of Juno favourite Eerdbeerschnitzel! The German remixes "Bio Rhythm", transforming it into a twisted, low centric house groove filled with a multiplicity of deft textures and atmospherics. A wholly unique sound befitting of the productions Mr Keiling graced us with last year. Rauch rounds off proceedings with the spectral bump of "Dirty Haze" which takes on a hue reminiscent of recent Lone output as it progresses.

It Ain't Over
Review: After two successful releases on German label Yore Records, Orlando Britain has now produced a four track follow up in the shape of Future Resist. "Contemplate" and "Back to 95" share the A-Side, riding with smooth currents of melodic Rhodes and analogue synths. On the flip, "Motor City" basks in its thudding bassline and heavenly rhythmic groove; uplifting and joyous, Orlando B has created a truly sparkling piece. "It Ain't Over" is all about tight jacking grooves and syncopated keys wrapped with luscious synth chords.

Abacus - "My Brazilian Love"
Last Session - "Sometimes I Feel Like"
Ron Trent - "Morning Fever"
Ani - "Love Is The Message"
Review: US label Prescription Classics serve up the fourth part in the From The Vaults series. Taking timeless beauties from the archives, Ron Trent's label is now re-issuing these deep dance gems. Part 4 kicks off with Abacus's "My Brazilian Love". Raw chords, delicate swinging hi-hats and perfectly executed percussive sections give it pure soul and groove. Last Session's "Sometimes I Feel" is fuelled by a strong kick that's kept in check by a bassline to die for and sultry vocal snippets. Label boss Ron Trent is up on the flip with "Morning Fever"; its epic guitar riff and chord patterns get as deep and funky as they come, garnished with tinny percussion and low slung momentum. Lastly, "Love Is The Message" from Ani is the "For Those Who Didn't Hear It The First Time" version from 1994. Riding off its tribal percussion and sharp drum taps, the sexy vocals ooze with allure over the constantly driving groove. Essential.

Shake - "Sonar"
Balil - "Nort Route"
Reese - "Just Want Another Chance"
Review: Taken from the new Back In The Box compilation compiled by Tom Middleton's Global Communication, here we get three techno cuts from Shake, Balil & Reese. A-Side "Sonar 123" from Shake boasts a crisp intro of crashing drums and crunching beats that soon drip with electronic blips and sturdy techno beats. Flipping over and Balil's "Nort Route" aims to fool with an ambient and romantic intro, before heavy techno thuds are thrown in. The heaviest is saved till last, however, with the dark sub bass and eerie crackles of "Just Want Another Chance" from Reese stealing the show. Dusky vocals, eerie pads and reverbed basslines thunder along to devastating effect.

Piano & Dream World
Review: Having launched with a dinky 45 from Mr Dunbar way back in 2008, Future Times tempt him back for more with typically idiosyncratic results. Anyone who indulged in Dunbar's splendid set for Ramp last year will love the selection here, with the producer flushing the dynamics of house music in sublime melodics. On first listen, Dunbar impresses most on the opening track "Polo" - drowning a multiplicity of heavenly sonic colours in bass so deep you feel it in your toes, whilst the percussive direction always meanders in all new directions. However give the full release time and all feels right - "Ballroom" for example, is a wholly unique sounding waltz through cavernous slo mo mutant disco whilst B Side epic "Piano & Dream World" presents a utopian vision of what proper house music should sound like.
