We Nuh Care (6:46)
Vex Fi Dat (5:39)
Review: Those who like their dubstep blessed with some original jah flavour and diced off with no small amount of mystery know the Ruff Cut operation is their first port of call. Ipman, Killawat, and Kaiju may have been involved in the first few transmissions on Ruff Cut, but 2015 has seen the label operating in stealth mode; the emphasis is on the bass weight my friend. RUFFCUT 005 is by Tremble and it's an appropriate name as both sides on We Nuh Care will cause plenty of soundsystem rumblings. Up top, the title tracks shows a most devilish approach to rhythmic construction and no small amount of drunken swagger in the bassline, whilst "Vex Fi Dat" lays down the gauntlet for anyone that thinks they know their way around an echo chamber .

Step 2001 (3:24)
Step 2001 (instrumental) (3:26)
Review: YES! We'd been waiting on this collaboration from UK start vocalist Wiley and shadowy electronic pioneer Zomby for a long time now, and it's about time it's landed on our shelves. "Step 2001" is a straight-up grime piece, a clicking, twisted groove made up of darting hi-hats and pacman sounds; you know when they say "they don't make them like they used to!"? Well, this doesn't apply here, as it's a serious head-dive back into the early noughties scene. There's also an instrumental version for maximum damage.

Review: Innamind have done what everyone has been clamouring after the success of last year's Las x Mikael EP and locked the Finnish pair up in a studio and not let them out until they've laid down another clutch of heavyweight steppers. Nice work Innamind! This time it's a double pack affair brandishing a weighty five productions, three of which are straight up collaborations between the Innamind mainstays. As you'd expect it's a heavily atmospheric affair throughout with the rattling percussive drama of "Drumspeak" the highlight of Las and Mikael's joint efforts, whilst the former's solo cut "Farout" may be the best example of what we like to call drunkstep.

Ego Dub (1:15)
Refuse (5:04)
Review: The mysterious WULF comes through with his debut for Tribe 12 Music, an imprint reserved for the more headsy end of bass music around the European quarters. "Ego Dub" and a straight-up roller, a corner-dweller special featuring a heavy bassline, dubwise flutters and a loose percussion flex. On the B-side, "Refuse" man rains the dub tonality, but heads deeper into the wormhole thanks to a sleepy artillery of drums, and a grizzly bassline for that final 'crunch'. Recommended!

Word Sound & Power (5:20)
Review: Previous outings on the 10" white label series Ruff Cut have come from Killawatt, Kaiju and Send (Ipman and Killawatt) but there is no clue as yet who is behind this latest transmission. Regardless, if you have been following the label's intermittent releases you will feel the need to check these two cuts. Jah vibes abound in "Eazy Tek it Eazy", a dub-wise steppahs track that has Mariana Trench levels of deepness - we need to hear this one on a big rig! Oodles of delay greet your ears when "Word Sound And Power" swings into view, but there is more of a discernible beat to hang onto here.

Review: UK techno veterans Mark Broom and James Ruskin first joined forces under The Fear Ratio alias back in 2011, delivering the inventive - and hugely enjoyable - IDM-meets-techno full-length, Light Box. Several years on the pair realign as The Fear Ratio for a second album, issued somewhat surprisingly through Skam, which gleefully explores similar sonic territory, whilst throwing a few more influences - most notably experimental hip-hop and vintage electro - into the pot for good measure. The result is a hugely entertaining album that naturally doffs a cap to Skam Records' dystopian roots, as well as the heavyweight soundsystem throb of dubstep, the hypnotism of dub techno, and the crackling electronic wizardry of Autechre.

Zim Zim Zim (feat Burro Banton) (4:32)
Zim Zim Zim (Zim version) (4:35)
Review: After last year saw Kevin Martin's primary project looming large with the Angels & Devils album and a slew of singles, The Bug is back on Ninja Tune with a new single. "Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

Straight Defeat (Jubei remix) (5:11)
Straight Defeat (instrumental) (5:36)
Review: Released last year, Kenzo and Collinjah laid down serious gully gospel on "Straight Defeat". Now time for two industrial strength remixes: a recently reinvigorated Caspa gets his war drum out for a greasy mechanical roller while Jubei ups the tempo ante with a tribal stepper that strips back the elements and lets Collinjah's vocal take the centre stage they require. Just like Kenzo's original, both versions mean serious dancefloor business.

Review: Epoch's Egyptian Avenue goes full vinyl for the first time with two achingly touching cuts: "Windmill" is a rolling slice of barbed soul with Trentemoller-style pads, Blue Lines era breakbeats and powerful yearning vocals from Afiya. "Devotion" takes us much deeper under oceanic swathes of atmospheric pads, far-away strings and distant halftime beats. From the dance to dirge, Epoch has created something truly special here.

Review: Want to know the epitome of on-point? Butterz's 2015 output is the perfect example, be it the much needed reissue of Woo Riddim, or the TQD production supergroup of Royal T, DJ Q and Flava D or this latest 12" from the label. Ruff Sqwad man Prince Rapid needs no introduction and he's really on fire with this four track debut for Butterz which really lives up its title. From the moment standout cut "Hear This" clicks into gear, Rapid is on searing form channelling a raw energy comparable to Ruff Sqwad in their heyday some ten years prior. Special mention to the artwork which was shot in the same place a Ruff Sqwad photo was shot a decade ago.

Review: One of Tempa's most consistent and exciting artists to join the label roster in recent years, Nomine's fusions defy categorisation. We've watched his murky world unravel over the course of EPs... But nothing could compare us for the complex web he's weaved on his debut album. The off-beat percussive textured groove of "84600", the pitched drum riff on "Stickman" and the slinky-but-snakelike rhythm on "Menacer" are just three of the eight delights on offer here. Tempa are having a fine year and Inside Nomine may be their crowning glory of 2015.

Foamplate - "Fuzz" (5:07)

Review: Despite announcing their retirement from the record label business earlier this year, it seems like Donga's Well Rounded operation has been coaxed back to the dark side (hooray!) with the arrival of a new endeavour Well Rounded Dubs. Never one to pander to trend, Well Rounded Dubs is concerned with music in the 140bpm / dubstep arena and launches with a 12" featuring some spacious steppers science from Foamplate and Corticyte. Up top local Brighton talent Foamplate makes an impressive vinyl debut with the swaggering sub anthem "Fuzz" (which features some nice field recordings of police sirens) whilst Gully Records affiliate opts for a stripped back approach on "Negative Space".

Long Live The Groove (5:33)
Can You (dub) (4:57)
Straight Up (5:40)
Review: Distance returns with a sentiment every single one of us can sign up to. He's not all chats, either; "Long Live The Groove" is a swaggering, sweaty slab of swinging bass music that develops momentum on every bar. Really juicy, funky stuff, there's a reason this has been kept on dub for so long. "Can You (Dub)" follows, and it's all about the drums. Fine-tuned and polished, there's a sense of liquid movement to the rhythm as strange designs and eerie cries drive deep into your ears. Finally we hit "Straight Up". The name says it all; a moody bass hook that doesn't quit, toxic subs and a weighty halftime drum arrangement... It's straight up badness, as you'd expect from the Chestplate bossman.

Review: Boxed resident Slackk aligns with the mythical R&S Records for the Backwards Light EP, having served up some of the most innovative grime of recent times with last year's superb Palm Tree Fire LP for Local Action. This latest juggernaut is a six-track affair, ranging from half-step tech-grime to pseudo techno, all rounded off with extremely lethal levels of bass, of course. "Bells" and "Sleeper Carriage" are out top picks, particularly the latter thanks to its hymnal melodies and near beatless swing...the layers of sonics drifting the ambience into a neat groove. Lovely as always from both artist and label.

Elmo Rehab (3:28)
Spooky Action At A Distance (5:12)
Review: Very few artists are digging as deep into dubstep's new chapter as creatively as Gantz. "Elmo Rehab" is a futuristic funeral dirge where emotions are mercifully kept intact thanks to the sound of someone enjoying a jumbo bag of Monster Munch. No, really. "Spooky Action At A Distance" takes us even deeper into this strange dystopian world by way of off-beat time signatures and paranoid arpeggios. As we move closer to the action we're shrouded in a scratchy, impenetrable jazz fog as a strange yearning vocal sample reminds us of how important context is. Highly limited, this one - like pretty much all Gantz creations - is a surefire keeper.

Review: The Two Fingers project has taken on quite a few manifestations since it first emerged back in 2009 as a collaboration between the ace Brazilian producer Amon Tobin and Canadian Joe 'Double-click' Chapman. Their self-titled debut for Big Dada saw the pair on button pushing duties for UK rapper Sway, but despite Chapman's subsequent departure, Tobin continued to work solo under the name with the 2012 LP Stunt Rhythms for Ninja Tune's hip-hop centred sister label the last Two Fingers release of note. Until now that is, with Noisia's Division Recordings label responsible for issuing this superb six track 12" Six Rhythms. Frenetic stadium rocking beat manipulation is the order of the day here, sort of like Dorian Concept after an overdose of yum yums.

Review: After singles for Lost Codes and Gobstopper, the mighty DarkO makes his way to Rinse FM's in-house label with the five-track Solace EP which features a remix from stateside producer Suicideyear. Perhaps the most explicit demonstration of DarkO's talent for attention grabbing, heart nagging melody yet, Solace is superb from start to finish though second track "Fuschia" stands out in particular. It's here that DarkO toys around with R'n'b vocal harmonies and channels some truly cavernous bass lines. Software artist Suicideyear brings his own rolling snare vibe to "Abstraction" for a fine remix to close out the EP.

AxH & Gremlinz - "Hacker" (5:04)
Review: AXH's less-is-more approach can be found in everything he does; both his sparse release rate and lean arrangements ensure we pay close attention to everything he does. Following his "Destroy" EP in 2014 come these four minimal muscularities; "Numbskull" rolls on a bleep hook that's reminiscent of mid 00s minimal techno but with swaggering kicks while "Gem Tone" utilises similar (but differently processed) lead sounds and an array of great samples including Amazonic noises and an MC bigging up Luke Skywalker. "Hacker" takes us much deeper into the dance as AXH hooks up with erstwhile Canadian D&B crew Gremlinz for some shattered amen antics and "D Lux" closes proceedings with a woozy, off-beat weave of hand drums, strange bleeps and a purring sub that makes its presence known without ever having to raise its voice.

Review: Following a series of well received - if frustratingly sporadic - singles on Woofer Music, Family Tree producer Faze Miyake has been given a chance to deliver his debut album on Rinse. The eponymous set perfectly showcases his unique take on grime, where rich melody lines, starry synthesizers and heady chords tussle for prominence with skittish rhythms, sturdy hits and booming basslines. He's helped along the way by an impressive roll call of guest MCs and vocalists, including Little Simz, Sasha Go Hard, Izzy Brooks and the Family Tree collective. It's Inga Copeland, though, who makes the greatest impression, lending some spine tingling vocals to the standout "Ice Cold".

Twisting the genre's standard halftime drum dynamic with bellows of room amid the anvil kicks, cheek-melting snares and nightmare-level vocal processes. Review: Nine years deep and still sounding as future as ever, Kode9 and The Spaceape's first album is historic in so many different directions... It's the first ever Hyperdub album, Kode9's sonic scope and barbed soundscapes and Spaceape's paranoid poetry and rhythmic narratives complement and tailor each other in a way no other dubstep-related producer and MC have ever sounded (before and since), the beats remain a unique, diverse, creative dynamic almost a decade later... And, sadly, the late Spaceape's stories now come laden with added portent poignancy. All proceeds from this reissue go to Stephen Samuel Gordon's family; if you haven't got this on vinyl you know what to do.
