Jake Sollo - "Father Time, Mother Nature" (4:50)
Sookie - "Choco Date" (4:19)
African Souls Band - "Nande" (3:51)
Review: A brand new label based in London and Paris but with roots deeply planted in the motherland, Africa Seven catapult themselves into our collection with such funky gusto very soon it will hard to be able to look at our collections and remember life without them. Their launch compilation is a showcase of Africa's funkiest side. Ranging from deep cosmic psychedelic rock (Ekambi Brilliant's "Africa Africa") to bright-flared, horn-fronted disco funk (Jo Tongo's "Jangolo") via firing, straight up floor-grooves like Jo Bisso's "Give It Up", this is an exceptional collection of a expertly curated jams that have yet to enjoy the exposure they deserve. Something tells us Africa Seven are going to add even more weight to the Afrobeat dialogue in the near future.

Little Eva - "Dynamite" (2:21)
Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready/Uptight" (2:32)
Review: Two awesome covers from Little Eva who, fittingly, is most famed for giving us the famously covered "Loco-Motion". "Dynamite" is homage to Mr Dynamite himself, the Godfather of Funk James Brown. Taking the "I Feel Good" hook and making it her own, it's an instant winner. "Get Ready/Uptight", meanwhile, is a medley of The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. It's very bit as tight you'd want it to be. Once stupendously rare, now your while this press run lasts. 100 per cent essential.

Wganda Kenya - "Bayesa"
M' Bamina - "Atide O Sika" (Nik Weston edit)
Review: Gems? Diamonds, more like. Sparkling funky diamonds that shine from every guitar, horn, bass and deep belly-driven chants. First up is a 1976 number from Wganda Kenya who actually come from Colombia. You'd never tell; with vast harmonies and a sonic span that's as wide as the Serengeti plains, its heart beats to a strict Kenyan rhythm. M'Bamina add a French African touch to the B on a specially edited version of "Atide O Sika" by label boss Nik Weston under his MUKAT edit guise. Watch out for the deconstructed percussion and bass break. A finer example of an edit you will not find. The Juno edition of the single comes in exclusive packaging of kraft paper hand stamped inner sleeve, additional branded card sleeve, signed insert, sticker and plastic protective outer sleeve

Chains Of Love (3:00)
Walk Tall (3:40)
Review: Never pressed to 45 before, both firing sides are taken from Esther's debut album from 1969; Newport News, Virginia. Both cover versions, JJ Barnes' "Chains Of Love" is given gospel-funk muscle as Esther belts out her heart over an impeccably frenetic band while Joe Zawinul's instantly recognisable jazz standard "Walk Tall" gets a powerful spoken word flex. Gutsy business to the very core, this is a snapshot of Esther at her most ambitious, energetic and creative.

Firewalker (Grant Phabao remix) (4:16)
Tokuta (Grant Phabao remix) (4:03)
Review: LA Afrofunk fusionists Jungle Fire have slowly built up quite the 45" armoury since launching in 2011. Not bad considering they were supposed to be a one-off special project! Here we find Paris DJs main man Grant Phabao on the remix duties, masterfully highlighting the dancefloor groove that's already coded deep into Jungle Fire's DNA. "Firewalker" is a straight-up floor riot with a skanked out back bone and horn salvos so hot you could cook your toast on them. "Tokuta" has a deeper groove where a strong line of tightly plucked guitars is backed by a range of horns that dip so low you can imagine the players kissing the floor. Originally teased out last autumn, this is a highly limited reissue... Not to be slept on.

Sandy Gaye - "Watch The Dog That Bring The Bone" (2:12)
Franciene Thomas - "I'll Be There" (2:00)
Review: Sandy Gaye's version of Inez Foxx's 1972 funk classic "Watch The Dog (That Bring The Bone)" is suitably obscure; to date, its' only previous appearance on wax came via Jazzman's 2007 Sister Funk 2 compilation, which focused on material from "unknown soul sisters". Here Athens of the North make it available to all on 7" for the first time, allowing those who missed out to revel in its' blistering drum breaks, powerful vocals and overall dancefloor-friendly appeal. It's backed by Franciene Thomas' similarly obscure and hard-to-find "I'll Be There", a deep funk classic of the sort that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings has been trying to recreate for the best part of the last two decades.

You're Wasting My Time (part 1) (2:52)
You're Wasting My Time (part 2) (3:46)
Review: Released in 1971 and written and recorded by Dave Hamilton (one of Motown's most prolific and influential session players), Sugar Billy Garner plays the consummate band leader over a relentless groove that rolls with drama. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.

You're My Music (4:20)
Jennifer (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Fans of QASB, Tokyo's foremost classic funk act, are in for a treat this week with two 7" hunks of high octane brass and drums business from the band issued through their regular home Soul Garden. By know you know QASB worship at the altar of prime '70s funk and what makes the band so special is the clear mastery of their art and the way their cuts are so damn danceable. Lead singer Amy A is key to horn heavy A Side "You're the Music" which has some killer breaks whilst the flipside instrumental cut sees her take a break to let the players lay down some heat.

The Dance Got Old
Review: This is the first time Fred & The Jewels have been repressed legitimately on a 45. "Tell Her" is straight out of the emotional playbook; big sentiments and an even bigger swing. "The Dance Got Old" is a timeless jive that will still slay a floor well over 40 years later. Boogaloo brilliance.

Working Hard (2:02)
Freeway Crowd (2:14)
Review: Crowbar come correct with this belting little slice of mid 70s funk by J.T. Allen and Little Richard's Band, originally issued on the Delmar label out of Atlanta in 1975. Sales notes suggest one collector offered Crowbar a sizeable sum to not reissue this gem, but the label was not interested, adamant that funk of this calibre needs to be granted a wider audience in fully licensed and remastered fro,. Raise your glasses to Crowbar then, as both cuts here will liven up the funk dance. "Working Hard" has a certain Motown edge to it, thanks to the rolling percussion and harmonies whilst "Freeway Crowd" finds JT and company veering off into grittier territory.

Review: Having debuted on Omega Supreme back in 2013 with a fine funk nugget on a split 7" with Moon B, London native Sven Atterton returns with a much more extensive display of his modern funk mastery. At eight tracks long, The Cove is wedged snugly between an EP and a fully fledged album and is rife with the sort of funk you want to hear soundtracking a warm evening as the sun is fades into the distance. Atterton's sophisticated brand of funk is clear from the off, as the title track veers into view and takes you on a journey anchored by the artist's refine funk slap bass. "Always Remember" and "Seventh Heaven" stand out on first listen but this is a set you need to let sink in over time.

Fly (3:51)
Jaguar (instrumental) (3:23)
Review: Amy A and her QASB cohorts come through with the second of two Soul Garden 7"s that really reaffirm their status as Tokyo's foremost exponents of the funk. QASB may be well schooled in the art of '70s funk but the lead cut here, "Fly", has a markedly more contemporary edge to it, and features some of Amy A's most powerful singing yet! As with most 45s from the band, the flip sees QASB flexing their instrumental muscles to the max on "Jaguar" a swift three minute exercise in how to rule on the horns!

Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:14)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:03)
Review: Wilson das Neves was is a legendary Brazilian percussionist most well known for being part of Os Ipanemas.

His cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' recorded with his 'conjunto' ensemble, takes the track into funky samba territory, laden with percussion and horns.

Originally released on his 'Wilson Das Neves E Conjunto - O Som Quente E O Das Neves LP in 1976. Previously unreleased on 7".

Som Tres - Tanga
A Mr Bongo all-time Brazilian Funk favourite. Tearing drums, vocals and piano packed into just over 2 minutes. Killer.

Som Tres were a trio formed by prolific pianist, arranger and producer Cesar Camargo Mariano. Originally appeared on the 'Um E Pouco, Dois E Bom, Este Som Tres E Demais' LP on Odeon Brazil in 1971. Previously unreleased on 7".
