Working Hard (2:02)
Freeway Crowd (2:14)
Review: Crowbar come correct with this belting little slice of mid 70s funk by J.T. Allen and Little Richard's Band, originally issued on the Delmar label out of Atlanta in 1975. Sales notes suggest one collector offered Crowbar a sizeable sum to not reissue this gem, but the label was not interested, adamant that funk of this calibre needs to be granted a wider audience in fully licensed and remastered fro,. Raise your glasses to Crowbar then, as both cuts here will liven up the funk dance. "Working Hard" has a certain Motown edge to it, thanks to the rolling percussion and harmonies whilst "Freeway Crowd" finds JT and company veering off into grittier territory.

You're Wasting My Time (part 1) (2:52)
You're Wasting My Time (part 2) (3:46)
Review: Released in 1971 and written and recorded by Dave Hamilton (one of Motown's most prolific and influential session players), Sugar Billy Garner plays the consummate band leader over a relentless groove that rolls with drama. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.

Chains Of Love (3:00)
Walk Tall (3:40)
Review: Never pressed to 45 before, both firing sides are taken from Esther's debut album from 1969; Newport News, Virginia. Both cover versions, JJ Barnes' "Chains Of Love" is given gospel-funk muscle as Esther belts out her heart over an impeccably frenetic band while Joe Zawinul's instantly recognisable jazz standard "Walk Tall" gets a powerful spoken word flex. Gutsy business to the very core, this is a snapshot of Esther at her most ambitious, energetic and creative.

Little Eva - "Dynamite" (2:21)
Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready/Uptight" (2:32)
Review: Two awesome covers from Little Eva who, fittingly, is most famed for giving us the famously covered "Loco-Motion". "Dynamite" is homage to Mr Dynamite himself, the Godfather of Funk James Brown. Taking the "I Feel Good" hook and making it her own, it's an instant winner. "Get Ready/Uptight", meanwhile, is a medley of The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. It's very bit as tight you'd want it to be. Once stupendously rare, now your while this press run lasts. 100 per cent essential.

Review: A brand new label based in London and Paris but with roots deeply planted in the motherland, Africa Seven catapult themselves into our collection with such funky gusto very soon it will hard to be able to look at our collections and remember life without them. Their launch compilation is a showcase of Africa's funkiest side. Ranging from deep cosmic psychedelic rock (Ekambi Brilliant's "Africa Africa") to bright-flared, horn-fronted disco funk (Jo Tongo's "Jangolo") via firing, straight up floor-grooves like Jo Bisso's "Give It Up", this is an exceptional collection of a expertly curated jams that have yet to enjoy the exposure they deserve. Something tells us Africa Seven are going to add even more weight to the Afrobeat dialogue in the near future.

Review: Having debuted on Omega Supreme back in 2013 with a fine funk nugget on a split 7" with Moon B, London native Sven Atterton returns with a much more extensive display of his modern funk mastery. At eight tracks long, The Cove is wedged snugly between an EP and a fully fledged album and is rife with the sort of funk you want to hear soundtracking a warm evening as the sun is fades into the distance. Atterton's sophisticated brand of funk is clear from the off, as the title track veers into view and takes you on a journey anchored by the artist's refine funk slap bass. "Always Remember" and "Seventh Heaven" stand out on first listen but this is a set you need to let sink in over time.

Firewalker (Grant Phabao remix) (4:16)
Tokuta (Grant Phabao remix) (4:03)
Review: LA Afrofunk fusionists Jungle Fire have slowly built up quite the 45" armoury since launching in 2011. Not bad considering they were supposed to be a one-off special project! Here we find Paris DJs main man Grant Phabao on the remix duties, masterfully highlighting the dancefloor groove that's already coded deep into Jungle Fire's DNA. "Firewalker" is a straight-up floor riot with a skanked out back bone and horn salvos so hot you could cook your toast on them. "Tokuta" has a deeper groove where a strong line of tightly plucked guitars is backed by a range of horns that dip so low you can imagine the players kissing the floor. Originally teased out last autumn, this is a highly limited reissue... Not to be slept on.

Tall Black Guy & Danced Til Midnight - "Wheat Bread & Eggs" (5:17)
Flour & Eggs (3:31)
Review: The enigmatic DANCED TIL MIDNIGHT graces the debut release for brand new UK label Thylacine Sounds. Bringing together elements of disco, funk, hip hop, afrobeat, complemented perfectly by the spirit-channelling of the likes of Fela Kuti, Babe Ruth, Chicago Transit Authority, via Francis Grasso and Larry Levan, over the four tracks... Danced Til Midnight's "Sun Bleach" EP is built for dancing, a treat for the ears and the feet. With a special appearance from vinyl hero Tall Black Guy on the collaboration "Wheat Bread And Eggs", this is an audacious and energetic debut for the label and the artist, and a clear statement of intent of further gems to come on Thylacine Sounds.

I Never Knew A Hell Like You
I Never Knew A Hell Like You (Andy Lewis remix)
Review: Need some powerful contemporary funk soul crossovers in your life/record collection? Look no further than I Never Knew A Hell Like You, the latest 7" nugget from British Soul Standard regulars Soulnaturals. Renowned for their incendiary live sets, Soulnaturals sound pretty fire committed to wax too! Not an ounce of their power has been lost in this 7" transition as Gloria Pryce's vocals surge with fire over the groove that's as tight as a nun's purse. For a more extended, mix-friendly floor burner check Andy Lewis's super-swinging breakbeat funk remix. Hellishly good.

The Boss
Senora Doll
Review: Melbourne afro fusionists The Seven Ups deliver two of the many highlights from their self-titled debut album. Packing a very similar punch to that of the Budos Band, the septet lay down super-tight but silky instrumental funk that's rich in narrative and momentum... "The Boss" is a Congo-minded dark boogie piece with wailing horns and sudden drops into eerie calm. "Senora Doll" switches the drama for a more reflective poignancy where the horns show a softer side thanks to a really infectious refrain that's subverted throughout. Highly limited, grab this while you can! Then check out the album.

Review: Released June 2014, Emma Jean reinforced the legendary Fields' reign as one of soul's longest standing and consistent contributors to soul since the very foundation. While there's no denying his powerful gutsy tones, The Expressions played an essential role in the process with equally beautiful and honest instrumentation. Here's the evidence; not just as compelling, crisp and imagination-grabbing as the original version but at points more dramatic thanks to the vast spaces that have been left for the big guy himself. Highly recommended; just like the original.

Kenny Smith - "Lord What's Happened To Your People" (2:51)
Kenny Smith & The Loveliters - "Go For Your Self" (full) (4:49)
Review: Soul Street maestro's breakthrough release from 1971 gets a much needed spotlight from Counterpart... "Lord What's Happening To Your People" is gospel re-imagined as raw funk as Kenny calls out humanity's problems with the help of a full backing chorus and some very slick, dramatic orchestration. "Go For Yourself" takes us further back into Kenny's career to 1966. Leaner than the A-side but comes with the same elements -tight bandmanship, emphatic backing vocals, instant feel-good dynamics - and is also loaded with some exceptionally clean drum breaks. Go fun yourselves.
