Deep House
Oscillate
Old Wars
Bamboo
Close Quarters
Review: Those who heard Harvey Sutherland's excellent debut EP for Echovolt, Edges EP, will be familiar with his trademark sound - a toasty, analogue style take on deep house marked out by jazz-funk chord progressions, warming synthesizer melodies and shuffling grooves. He changes the script a little on this EP for Voyage Recordings, though there's still plenty of seductive deep house to enjoy (most notably opener "Oscillate" and the Inskwel style, boogie-influenced loveliness of "Bamboo"). Where the EP really comes into its own, though, is when he tries a different tack. "Old Wars" sounds like Moon B's electrofunk explorations wrapped in a snuggly duvet, while "Close Quarters" successfully fixes Herbie Hancock style synth melodies to loose, cymbal heavy beats.

2DeepSoul - "Home"
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Deserted"
Review: We can't remember the last time we came across a 7" single of straight-up deep house. Certainly, it's a novelty, though there's little novel or cheeky about the two tracks showcased on this diddy, coloured vinyl release from Spain's Minuendo label. 2DeepSoul's A-side, "Home", is effortlessly melodious - a warm, rich and enticing blend of shuffling rhythms, swirling chords and the kind of blissfully electronic melodies that make you want to dance with your eyes shut. There's a more organic and quietly soulful feel about Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana's flipside effort, "Deserted". Blessed with a delicious double bass line, bespoke keys and a whisper of Motor City techno (in terms of the electronics, at least), it's a sublime chunk of sensual deepness.

Transitions
Review: The latest NDATL comes from a fresh talent in the shape of Atlanta producer Stefan Ringer, and it's a special prospect indeed. The jazz is most definitely strong in this EP, from the scatty broken beat flow of "The Fix" with its lopsided synth wobbles to the sensual soul shimmer of "IFY" with arresting vocals from Afua. On the flipside "Meagangood" gets into a skippy house refrain with keys that positively lift up out of the room, and "MYM" plies a thoughtful chord progression against another set of sublimely shuffling drums. "Transitions" finishes the EP off marvelously in a more moody environment with scattered vocals adding to the heady vibe.

1Dan - "Recovery Process" (6:29)
Marco Nega - "Inside Out" (feat Leen Vivid) (6:55)
Rai Scott - "Depth Of The Ocean" (6:45)
Review: The past few years have seen Owen Jay's Batti Batti label really establish itself as a physical concern, having first emerged in the digital realm in 2009. The split release focus of Batti Batti has served it well so far, so it's little surprise to find the label's first of the year, Tribal Roots, draws for cuts from four different production units. Jay opens proceedings with his fellow Maltese producer Melchior Sultana whose "Tribal Roots" is augmented well by the percussive talents of Antoine. Further Batti Batti treats come from label regulars 1Dan and Marco Negra, whilst Rai Scott makes her bow with the suitably titled "Depth Of The Ocean" which might just be the pick of the four here!

Noth Ing
Review: HNNY seems to save his best for Local Talk. His previous three EPs for the Swedish imprint - "For The Very First Time", "Yearning" and, of course, "Tears" - have all become staples of deep house sets over the past 18 months. Happily, "Noth-ing" is another cracker - a single-sided salvo shot through with the sort of breezy sweetness we've come to expect from the Swede. The track itself fuses bubbling flutes and impassioned vocal samples with typically fluid deep house beats, a languid (but heavy) bassline and just the right amount of cosseting pads. It's perhaps a little looser than some of his productions, but that's no bad thing.

Four Walls & Funkyjaws - "Bring Me To Space" (Saine remix)
Saine - "Daze"
Saine - "Daze" (Four Walls & Funkyjaws remix)
Review: Shadeleaf Music boss Thatmanmonkz has decided to do a little musical matchmaking on this release. It features original material from both Belarusian duo Four Walls & Funkyjaws, and Helsinki-based Saine, with each act also remixing the other's track. Four Walls and Funkyjaws' "Bring Me To Space" lives up to its name, lacing boogie-influenced synth melodies atop intergalactic chords and a loose and jazzy deep house groove. Saine opts for a more hypnotic, locked-in vibe on his sumptuous remix of the same track. He gets a little more expansive on his own "Saine Daze" - whilst retaining the slightly blazed feel associated with his productions - before the Eastern European pair weigh in with a slightly jauntier revision that wisely makes great use of Saine's sensual synths and soul-flecked chords.

Review: French house royalty "DJ" Gregory Darsa first worked under the Point G alias back in the late '90s, and it's a project he's revisited with great success more recently across a series of records on his eponymous record label. The start of a new year sees the release of the most comprehensive Point G record yet with #6 brandishing a weighty eight house cuts across three slabs of vinyl, essentially providing house DJs with a good set's worth of material to run through. Describing in minute, clinical detail how each track progresses is not something we want to do, instead this is a collection whose dancefloor secrets should reveal themselves to you when the vinyl is on a turntable but "Surdo" is a rasping highlight!

The Deepness (Ode To The Soul)
Ancestry (Man-Drake remix with Afrikan Sciences on the bassline)
Review: For their latest trip into ultra-deep house territory, Spain's Deep Explorer imprint has turned to South African producer Ofuren, co-founder of the Roots Go Deep imprint. Predictably, he delivers a trio of cuts oozing with smoky atmosphere and intoxicating dancefloor warmth. The bongo-laden "Ancestry' kicks things off, with evocative pads, whispered vocals and a delicious bassline wrapping themselves around a bongo-laden afro-deep groove. Somehow, he manages to eke even more depth from the machines on "Mind Jazz Exploration" and "The Deepness (Ode To The Soul)", a Ron Trent style chunk of dreamy dancefloor bliss. Finally, Man-Drake and Afrikan Sciences join forces to turn "Ancestry" into a loose, appealing slice of midtempo goodness, complete with hazy melodies and a yearning, early morning feel.

Lawrence - "Sapphire"
Arcarsenal - "Suzgun Beats"
Son Of Sound - "Staircase Love"
Diego Gamez - "Idealness"
Alexkid & Hector - "Ontra Bravo"

Review: In order to celebrate arriving at their tenth year, Jus Ed's Underground Quality label picks up on Unity Kolabo, a vinyl series that has laid dormant for a while, and there is a suitably high profile cast of contributing talent. The presence of DJ Koze and Lawrence is likely to stop many a deep house appreciator in their tracks, and contributions from this European pair are complemented by some under the radar talent. Tape Club's Jo Nathan sets the tone with the crisp, warbling deepness of "That Other Train", and it's nice to see Koze turn in one of his most joyous productions in recent memory in the shape of "NYC Dub". The subsequent six cuts all retain that Underground Quality and demonstrate Unity Kolabo Part 6 & 7 to be a fine way to celebrate 10 years. PS do check the mind bending Son Of Sound contribution - our personal favourite!

BitterSuite - "Familiar Currents" (part 2)
Review: Having established DeepSystems as a radio show some years back, Matt Pond (one third of the BitterSuite collective) has decided to launch a record label under the same name. Given his contacts, it's a smart move. Two close pals - BitterSuite member Jon Gray and Dan '1Dan' Rodgers - join forces as Tales Ov Rossi, laying down a slowly shifting chunk of deep, heads-down house that stretches across one side of the 12". On the flip, Gray goes solo under the BitterSuite banner, delivering the two-part "Familiar Currents". Both versions sound heavily inspired by the dense percussion, expansive musicality and rich soundscapes of Ron Trent.

Review: Given that this is the first album from the great Theo Parrish since 2007, it's unsurprising interest in American Intelligence has rocketed over the course of the year as Sound Signature left a trail of hints. Happily, American Intelligence is a fine album; deep and woozy in parts, undeniably soulful, shot through with jazz influences and full to bursting with killer cuts. By now, everyone should know the brilliant "Footwork" single (arguably one of the records of 2014); soon, clubs will swing to the off-kilter dancefloor jazz of "Make No War", the 21st century broken house of the epic "Fallen Funk" and the decidedly odd - but brilliant - "Helmut Lampshade".

Brame & Hamo - "Clockwerk" (Session Victim remix)
Hamo - "SOUL"
Brame - "Full Custody"
Review: The sleepy seaside town of Sligo, based on Ireland's Atlantic coast, seems an unlikely location to base a deep house label. More remarkably, this debut 12" from Sligo-based Splendor & Squalor comes from two residents of the town: longtime DJ buddies and hip-hop/deep house fusionists Brame and Hamo. It's a strong first outing, with each of the three original cuts coming doused in smooth soul and hip-hop influences. That's means beats that swing, sensual strings, chunky bass and the kind of pads that seem to wrap themselves around your body. The duo's collaborative "Clockwork" - arguably the pick of the bunch - is also remixed by Session Victim (think ultra-deep goodness), while Hamo's sample-heavy "Soul" offers the perfect balance between smiling deep house and classic hip-house.

Review: Hailing from the Schwarzwald region of Germany, the Black Venison label launches with the Benz EP from VRRS, "produced using exclusively outboard equipment, recorded to tape, mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery, London". Consisting of three tracks, this is a record that fits snugly into the current trend for hardware driven house and techno with the brisk "190 E" sounding like an updated acid laden take on MCDE's Raw Cuts template. Future releases on Black Venison from Italian crew Die Roh and their compatriot Steve Murphy suggests the label means business!

I Wanna Know
I Wanna Know (Extramental mix)
Review: By Alex "Omar" Smith's standards, "I Wanna Know" is something of a curveball. It sees him joining forces with vocalist James Garcia to lay down the sort of spine-tingling vocal house cut that would have once been associated with Chicago acts such as Fingers Inc. Admittedly, it contains plenty of far-sighted Detroit electronics and Smith's usual percussive shuffle, but there's a genuine retro-futurist feel that may take some of his fans by surprise. It's rather wonderful, all told, and sounds like a crossover anthem in waiting. Turn to the flipside and you'll find the Extramental Mix, a superb instrumental version that gives Smith's sublime melodies, vintage synths and sparkling electronics a chance to shine. Artwork of the year too!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Slow Town Records has really picked up the pace this year, delivering essential 12" singles from Riccio and QX-I, amongst others. Here, they round of 2014 with an EP of positively edible deep house from Fouk man Hans Peeman. In typical Peeman fashion, there's plenty of soul to the liquid beats and rich chords of "Prologue", while "Monologue" is an attractive saunter through classic Detroit deep house with the restless energy of a Chicago production. MR K-S remixes the title track, delivering a heavily percussive version that sounds like a plea to head towards the dancefloor, pronto. A touch darker and altogether heavier, it offers an excellent alternative to Peeman's eyes-wide-shut original.

Review: While their sporadic appearance remains a frustration, it's hard to find fault with Boe Recordings' Halal Prepared series of EPs. This third installment of the series, which lands 12 months after it's' predecessor, contains another quarter of high quality deep house jams. The real highlights - to our ears, at least - are the two tracks that doff a cap to classic Detroit techno, whilst keeping their feet firmly rooted in deep house. Both "Star Struck" by Chicago Deep and Havantepe's "Plane Waves" capture the retro-futurist spirit and stargazing electronics associated with the Motor City perfectly. Elsewhere, keep an eye out for Taelue's "Desolate Dreams", which offers a bittersweet trip into ultra-deep house territory.

Patrice Scott - "Journey To The Unknown"

Review: REPRESS ALERT: For those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of Detroit deep house and techno, this EP from Michael Zucker's Finale Underground imprint (an offshoot of his Finale Sessions label) should be an essential purchase. With the likes of Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy and Luke Hess involved, you'd expect the quality threshold to be high. It is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. Hess' hypnotic techno jam "Tolox" is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of Keith Worthy's brilliant "Cyclops". Best of all, though, is Scott's "Journey Into The Unknown", which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, Transmat-style Motor City rhythms.

Fettel joins the family of the label's fine roster of retro-tone music makers backed up with a Jimpster remix. Always in the search of timeless music pieces the Spanish imprint sure found a fine exponent of their unique trippy melodic universe with Fettel's offer on this EP. Review: It's been a fine first year of business for the Sol Asylum label who have secured a stellar selection of cuts from the likes of Dana Ruh, Dilated Pupils, Julie Marghilano and more with this output complemented by some truly distinct illustrated cover art. What better way to sign off 2014 than turn to one of Russia's most respected producers in Ethereal Sound boss man Anton Zap. It's not clear what Sleduyushly stands for, or indeed what exactly is happening on the cover art, but don't be distracted by translation woes and focus on Zap's refined skills for deep and ever evolving productions that is evident from the moment "Talking" locks into groove. From here Zap rolls through terrain that's abstract ("Rubblewood"), chunky ("My Lesson") and ambient ("Her Lesson") for one of the more diverse and accomplished 12"s you'll hear this week.

Review: Juju and Jordash are rather good at making albums. Their last full-length excursion, 2012's brilliant Techno Primitivism, was a gloriously maudlin and evocative affair, as influenced by drowsy ambient and experimental electronica as house and techno. While there are some similarly dark tracks lurking in the shadows of third album Clean Cut (see the creepy "Swamp Things"), for the most part it's a pleasingly dancefloor-centric concoction. That's not to say that they've packed it with jolly moments - the tipsy, melodious "Anywhere" and dub disco-meets-deep house wonk-out "SP Shakes" aside - but rather their leftfield blends of house and techno have a more club-friendly feel. The results are, for the most part, extremely good, with the rave-era revivalism of "Whippersnapper" (a kind of darkroom, Detroit-influenced take on T-Coy's "Carino") standing out.

This surprise debut album has a similarly dreamy feel, even if the techno side of his output has been tamed a little. Instead, we get a range of eyes-wide-shut compositions that variously touch on Mood Hut style deep house ("Mercury"), ultra-deep electronica (the odd beats, spacey noises and relentless chords of "Mozaic"), swinging, Max D style drum workouts (the rich bass, dubbed-out synths and loose house grooves of "184"), trip-hop style downtempo beats "Statues PF"), and thrillingly loose, new age house anthems ("Xssential-3").

Review: Making a welcome return to his regular haunt of Future Vision, Ron Trent's protege Trinidadian Deep is back in action with some seriously loose-limbed percussion to set your synapses racing back in time. "Orisha Stomp" kicks the EP off with a heavy drum workout, ditching melodic content in favour of a dense and utterly addictive beat track. "Olofin Santos" however lets a little more light in to the mix, with a haunting vocal turn and some dreamy synth washes sitting in amongst more of that damn fine tumbling drum work. "Oshun's Love" is a full bodied cut rich in exuberant piano, sounding thoroughly full on compared to the hazy mysticism of the other two tracks.

Review: ** MOVE D REPRESS ** After signing up to the Electric Minds crew last year, Move D is back at the label to drop a fresh track and offer his last EP up to the remixers. "To The Disco 77" is a pitch-perfect slice of laconic house music with all the tenderness you would expect of Move D, with a notable bass synth coming on feisty and reserved all in one breath. Jay Shepheard takes to "Got 2 B" with a more straight up flavour of house music, piling the chord riff on bright and bold and moving ever forwards. Endian's version of the same track is decidedly different slipping into a heads-down shuffle punctuated by dubby pulses and micro house snippet-funk. Duff Disco completes the package with a positively smacked-out slice of slow motion disco groove that struggles to lift its lids through the smoke in the room.
