Love Me Now
Review: The hive of activity at Luaka Bop themed around the work of elusive Nigerian synth-funk pioneer William Onyeabor doesn't look like slowing down any time soon with the first of two comprehensive vinyl box sets arriving. First brought to wider attention on last year's hugely popular compilation Who Is William Onyeabor?, Luaka Bop's ongoing efforts have to be applauded here as five of the LPs the Nigerian artist self-released between 1977 and 1985 are remastered and made available officially for the first time. Onyeabor's debut LP Crashes In Love is present in it's originally mixed stereo form and along with four other albums, Luaka Bop make space for an additional 7", two booklets and MP3 download codes for all the music.

Shaluza Max - "Mangase"
Tabu Ley Rochereau - "Hafi Deo"
Review: A special summer-tuned dedication to two of Africa's most creative contributors who both passed away at the birth of the New Year. First up, South Africa's Shaluza Max's 2002 classic gets the revisitation it deserves; big accordions, honeyed Zulu vocals and a chugging groove that could plough into any dancefloor under the sun, it struts with a timeless sense of universal groove science. Flip for a rewind to the mid 80s as Soundway pays tribute to the hugely prolific Tabu Lay Rochereau. Complete with smooth, soothing synths, show-stopping harmonies and slinky bassline that won't quit, it's as heart-rending now as it was 30 years ago.

La Vem Salgueiro
Tenha Fe, Pois Amanha Um Lindo Dia Vai Nascer
Review: Samba flavours do not come more authentic than this. The sixth in Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series, here they unearth two foundation pieces from Rio collective Os Origianais Do Samba. Forming in 60s Rio, they're still highly active today and have a discography peppered with Brazilian gold. This 45 does well to showcase their breadth... "La Vem Salgueiro" is quintessential samba. Heavy rhythm, punctuated vocals and a dynamic that leaps from bold and delicate in a flash, it charms you instantly. "Tenha Fe" has a softer soul as it strums and sways and more of a folky sensation, tight harmonies and alluring naked instrumentation.

Abel Lima E Les Sofas - "Corre Riba Corre Baxo"
Abel Lima Des Iles Du Cap Vert - "Nos Maos"
Review: Supreme Cape-Verdean funk from the 70s, two of Abel Lima's most distinctive cuts are re-energised by Sofrito. "Corre Riba Corre Baxo" translates to what comes up must come down... But there's no come down here; pure positivity oozes from every highlife guitar strum and the overwhelming presence of the walking bassline. "Nos Maos" is a tad more subdued as the French and Portuguese lyrics pin down a tight, horn-led Caribbean groove. Act fast: as with all Super Singles, this one is super-limited!

Trio Mocoto - "Swinga Sambaby"
Tenorio Jr - "Nebulosa"
Jorge Autuori - "Autorizando"
Review: Three stunning flavours on Mr Bongo, none of which have ever been released on 45" before... Trio Mocoto - famously the backing band for Jorge Ben - lay down a frenetic samba where the group vocals take full lead of a sprightly groove with tinkling keys. Jazz Tenorio Jr's "Nebulosa" is exemplary jazz bossa, all heavy keys and creative drama. Finally Trio drummer Jorge Autuori gets representation with the lavish key-heavy samba "Autorizando". Each one a stunner, Mr Bongo have delivered once again

Jorge Ben & Torquinho - "Carolina Carol Bela"
Joao Donato - "Ara"
Review: As famous as "Carolina Carol Bela" is, and as famous as both Jorge Ben and Toquinho are, madly this is the first time this track has ever appeared on a 45! Famously contemporised by D&B artist DJ Marky, its dreamy ebb and flows remain a timeless lesson in the most beautiful Brazilian music. As you'd expect from a super-limited Mr Bongo 7", it's coupled by an equally stunning slice of Latin folk. "Ara" is the creation of one of bossa nova's most decorated ambassadors. Driven by rhythmic staccato vocals, strident jazz-tinged pianos and layers of tangible instrumentation, it's been warming hearts since 1973. Gorgeous.

El Ritmo De Nueva York
Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout The Boogaloo
Review: The last time Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers dropped some bossa nova-loving heat like this was back in 2011 with the Swingy Boogaloo 7". And following their Mi Watusi album of the same year they return to the Freestyle label with the Latin- flaired and horn-heavy "El Ritmo De Nueva York" and ""Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout The Boogaloo". The former sweats a sultry Spanish vibe with quick piano-playing and an impressive sax section, while the latter is a little more broken beat with an infectious vocal you can sing along too.

Elza Soares - "Mas Que Nada"
Elizabeth - "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente"
Review: Now firmly into double figures, the Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongos continues to be a source of much delight for the selectors out there seeking sought after gems from the 'golden era' of 1960s and 1970s Brazilian music. Fist up on this latest 7" is an alternate version of the Latin standard "Mas Que Nada" from Samba legend Elza Soares, who takes Jorge Ben's classic song into tougher and jazzier territory without losing any flavour. Complementing it, Mr Bongos present a rarity discovered from one of their trips to Brazil with the horn heavy delights of "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente" from the unknown Elizabeth uncovered whilst digging through the now defunct Sao Paolo vinyl spot Tony's Hits.

Doris Monteiro - "Se Voce Quiser Mas Sem Bronquear" (3:00)
Quarteto Em Cy - "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" (2:45)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazilian 45 series hits it's ninth gear with two region-defining slices of sun-kissed samba soul. Doris takes the lead with delicate frontage. Leading from the front, all instruments follow her cues and mirror each vocal flourish with mild big band cheekiness. The instantly distinctive "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" from sister quartet Quarteto Em Cy is a great twist on a Latin classic with its slightly rocky guitars and full bodied harmonies. Previously released in 1972, a return has been long overdue.

Ibibio Spiritual
Review: Contemporary afro funk wizardry abounds as London-based band Ibibio Sound Machine don a pair of disco, funk and boogie spectacles and study their Nigerian roots with attention to detail. The end result is a truly unique fusion of sounds that range from the 80s synth boogie of "The Talking Fish" to the Fela-level freneticisms of "I'm Running". Other highlights include the slamming pop jitters of "Let's Dance", the crazed synth squiggles and slap bass madness of "The Tortoise" and the alluring juxtaposition of modern drum production, captivating poetry and jazzy dynamics of "Prodigal Son". A highly accomplished debut... This needs your attention.

Joao Bosco - "O Ronco Da Cuica"
Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca - "Transamonica"
Review: Mr Bongos hit paydirt once again with their Brazil 45s series, with this 11th seven featuring a pair of Latin gems from Joao Bosco and Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca that have never been pressed on 7" before. In original form, "O Ronco Da Cuica" was a certified highlight of the prolific Bosco's 1976 LP Galos de Briga, the supple bossanova groove truly blessed by some excellent vocal harmonies when the chorus hits. Those sample freaks in search of a killer break will however gravitate to the B Side jazz fusion bomb "Transamonica" from Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca as it's packed full of them!

Review: Secret Stash dig into the archives of Nigerian funk and present a gem from one of the country's most influential musicians. In the early 1970s, Harry Mosco formed the now legendry funk-rock band, The Funkees. In search of greater opportunity and a wider audience, the group moved to London in 1973. Four years and two albums later they disbanded. Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, prominent businessman GAD Tabansi was interested in getting into the music business, and signing the Funkees was his top priority. He traveled all the way to London to meet with the band only to find out they'd broken up. Tabansi returned home with no record deal. Mosco had already formed a new group called Africanium with drummer/singer Willie Bestman. Later that same year (1977), they recorded an album at TMC Studios in London. It was originally intended for release by EMI, but instead, Mosco licensed the album, titled For You Specially, to Mr. Tabansi for release on his new label. Despite Tabansi's attempts to capitalize on the success of Mosco's previous recordings with The Funkees, For You Specially was released with very little commercial success. Big applause to Secret Stash for this reissue which will hopefully give the album some belated but well deserved praise.

Review: Football just keeps on giving... Not only a chance for the world to unite every four years and share a common goal, but also an opportunity to repurpose some of funk, soul and jazz's most classic tracks. Authentically recreated by Brazilian musicians, each of these 11 standards has been executed with Latino panache; from the added sun-strummed positivity of "Lovely Day" to the soft boogie pianos on "Family Affair" to the slinky reco-reco rhythm on "I Can See Clearly Now" and the nylon string lilts on "Take Five", this is a fantastic sonic twist on some of the finest songs written in the last 50 years and an ideal complement to any World Cup activity you have planned.

Tito Puente & His Concert Orchestra - "Black Brothers"
Tito Puente - "Hit The Bongo"
Review: Two concentrated slabs of Latin funk fusion from the king... "Black Brothers" first landed on Tito's eponymous Fania-released album in 1973 and has never been released on 45". With warm, smiling sonics and tale-telling drama composed throughout, it sums up Tito's influence and character succinctly. "Hit The Bongo" came our way three years earlier. Driven by a snake-like conga and tight orchestration, it also comes complete with one of Tito's neatest naked drum breaks ever recorded.

El Dia De Suerte (discomix)
Mi Sonsito
Si Hecho Palante
Review: Victor Axelrod dons his Ticklah guise for more forward-thinking Latin creativity. Building on his rich repertoire (which includes the Dubside Of The Moon album and Afrofunk band Antibalas), each cut tickles a different part of the central American underbelly... The fire is ignited with a digidub-style samba standard, all spacious, wriggling with far away vocals, "Mi Sonsito" is a little more upbeat with its scuffling rhythm and sing-along chorus and "Si Hecho" concludes this neat release with a rustic lament that's produced with 21st century depth and scope.

Review: A slice of Senegalese history... Aby Ngana Diop's only album was the country's first commercial album to feature a traditional female tassukat. It took Awesome Tapes From Africa several years to track down the late artist's family but they've finally done it and can now unleash this for everyone's pleasure. Ranging from the classic drum samples of opener "Dieuleul-Dieuleul" to the more traditional mbalax dynamics of the album's title track, this is a captivating and unique listen from start to finish. As usual superbn stuff by Awesome Tapes From Africa.

Silvia Leneira
Zazueira
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series continues with aplomb... On their eighth outing we find the hugely prolific 60s/70s troubadour Wilson Simonal paying homage to the legendary Jorge Ben with two exemplary cover versions. Whether it's on the soft big band emphasis and teasing fills on "Zazueira" or the upbeat, feel-good swinger "Silva Lenheira" there's a raw clarity to Wilson's vocals that instantly endure; the way he pushes his voice to the very edge of breaking on the high notes and a rich, clear delivery, he's the consummate soulful showman.
