A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

Bossa De Uma Nota So
Just A Little Samba
Aguadebeber
Redemption Samba
Review: Italian edit maestro Suonho first teased us with this series last summer. Timing is everything, though. And as the World Cup continues to surprise fans (and shatter many dreams in the process), now is the perfect timing for this immaculate collection of Brazilian standards. Top notch production and subtle contemporary touches, highlights can be found on each of the four tracks. Notable party-primers are, however, the fiery scat on "Bossa De Uma Nota So" and the dramatic piano work and arresting percussion on "Redemption Samba". Stupendously limited, grab this or leave the tournament with your head hung in shame...

Review: With the previous four volumes all celebrating the many routes of jazz and its relationship with the western world, Jazzman's fifth Spiritual Jazz volume looks further afield and explores jazz from the rest of the world. From South Africa to Argentina, Jazzman have unearthed tracks that have never before ventured from their country of recorded origin and compiled the album and artist information with the level of detailed documentarianism we've come to expect from them. A truly unique listen, and a kindly reminder that while America may be home to jazz's sturdiest roots, its tendrils reach a lot further.

Review: With a life spent record digging across the world and a near encyclopedic knowledge of Brazilian music, its rare for David 'Mr Bongo' to come across an incredible record from that rich period that he doesn't already know, but that's what happened with this one. This one began with a tip off from Floating Points, followed by frenzied digging and researching... and the joyful receipt of a mysterious package from Brazil! Printed in black and three special fluorescent inks on high quality white card with a matte seal. The label is printed using two pantones.

Review: Trunk Records, curated by noted crate digger Jonny Trunk, has always done a neat line in uncovering weird and wonderful gems, mostly from dusty records found in charity shops and bargain bins. Here, Trunk showcases some of those finds, opting for "funny old shit" that veers from the sublime (the Jellies' much-loved "Jive Baby On A Saturday Night" and Larry Baschet's spooky, cinematic "Rapsodie De Budapest") to the ridiculous (comedy calypso numbers from Bernard Cribbins and Robert Mitchum). Along the way, expect to hear tongue-in-cheek easy listening, Radiophonic Workshop experimentalism, and African jazz (Guy Warren of Ghana).

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

Review: Last year saw BBE call on Kev Beadle, a well respected digger, selector, radio host and label boss, to dust down his curation hat and put together Private Collection, his first compilation in almost two decades. Given the critical reception to that twelve track selection of independent jazz from the '70s and '80s it's little surprise to see BBE invite Beadle to dig through his personal archives for a second edition. Many of the tracks included here are the epitome of rare, given the fist airing outside the legendary club sessions that Beadle played back in the day and focuses more on the modal, spiritual and cosmic end of the jazz spectrum. A most enlightening collection from Mr Beadle.

Review: The first Best of on vinyl from the ethiopiques series. Francis Falcetto, the founder of the series (already 28 Cds available) and THE specialist of Ethiopian music pick up a selection of the best tracks of the series. He opened his large collection of pictures, vinyls and memorabilia to make the artwork of this double LP gatefold. The perfect introduction to the world of Ethiopian music but the specialists will also discover some rare and unknown tracks and artists.
