  1. The Greatest Dancer (4:51)
  2. Dancer (7:09)
Review: ** Repress For The Hood Fans ** Emboldened by the reception to his overlooked and revisited Floorplan project, Mr Robert Hood turns to a track of a similar nature for the latest release in the M Plant Perpetual Masters series. The main slinky hook from Sister Sledge's "He's The Greatest Dancer" may have been subsequently bastardized by Mr Will Jiggy Smith, but Hood's minimal sampling of the same source on the 1991 track "The Greatest Dancer" must have sounded thrilling then. It still does today, remastered and is complemented on the flip by "Dancer", a new Hood jam that is as close to outright disco without losing that trademark Detroit grit as you can get.

  2. Tell You No Lie (8:31)
Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.

Review: Championed by Midland & Bradley Zero to name a couple, here are some fresh cuts for the afro-enthusiastic bass music lovers! O'Flynn's first vinyl release sees him flip around a Calypso drum solo on the A side for a seriously powerful and percussive tune, whilst side B reveals an explosion of African vocal chants and melodic treats. A real statement of intent for the first release on this new label.

  1. DJ Boring - "Winona" (8:35)
  2. Magma - "You" (6:22)
Review: The E-Beamz label recently debuted with a fine 12" of jungle-influenced haziness from Tim Shug and DJ Playstation. Here, they swiftly move on to EP number two, showcasing tracks from debutants DJ Boring and Magma. The former's A-side cut, "Winona" - so called because it utilizes vocal samples from an interview with actress Winona Ryder - sounds like a long-lost early '90s cut: an ultra-deep treat full of deep space chords, analogue deep house beats and psychedelic TB-303 abuse. Magma's dustier flipside cut, "You", explores similar old skool pastures, making use of both barnstorming techno drums and sweaty jungle breaks. Throw in ridiculously deep chords and riffs, and some eyes-closed vocal samples, and you have another late night winner.

Review: From Moods & Grooves to Sistrum, Brian Harden has served up more than enough soulful, synth-led house and techno in his time. It's just the kind of style that suits the mood on D3, and so the label has picked up his essential "Chicago To Detroit" jam and called upon a fine selection of remixers to rework the track. First up is Byron The Aquarius, who drops some expressive broken beat drums into the mix to spar with the illustrious melodic tones to great effect. Meanwhile the label boss Brian gets busy with a classic, straight-up adaptation on his "Chicago Sur Seine Mix" before Patrice Scott opts for an energised variation with poignant new Rhodes-esque keys floating on top.

  2. Johnny Hammond Smith - "Tell Me What To Do" (5:22)
Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. Review: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Review: Given that Warp has finally bowed to pressure and reissued James Stinson's sole album under The Other People Place guise (2001's peerless Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe), there was an inevitability about this 12" getting the re-press treatment. It first came out on Clone back in 2002, and paired a fine Stinson solo effort with a rare outing for DJ Stingray as Mystic Tribe A.I. Stinson's "Sorrow & A Cup of Joe" is a thing of rare beauty: a spacey, 4/4 electro cut blessed with bubbly electronics, alien chord progressions, heavy sub-bass and a fluttering, melancholic vocal sample. On the flip, Stingray's "Telepathic Production" is a dreamy chunk of outer space warmth driven by chunky hip-hop breakbeats and an undulating bassline.

Review: Burnski and Jon Woodall's Constant Black sublabel follows up a strong opening gambit from Noha with this single from Michael James. It's a refined exercise in minimal house with plenty of warmth and character woven in between the sleek, shuffling beats. "010101" bubbles away on melodic delay ripples and slow drifting pads, while "020202" gets into freakier territory with its nocturnal sound set. "030303" is the dreamiest jam on the record, reaching skywards with its soft synth tones while that insistent groove rolls away underneath. As far as classy minimal house goes, it doesn't get any better than this.

Review: Subb-An and Adam Shelton may be plenty busy with their own endeavours, but they still know how to bring it home to roost on their own One Records. This time around they've both turned to the same vocalist, Isis Salam, to deliver some insistent instruction atop their lean and mean productions. Subb-An's "Self Control" is a cool and deadly workout that places the emphasis on the bass and places Salam's classic speech at the front of the mix. Shelton gets into a more jacking frame of mind on "Only Now", whipping up a raw Chicago flavour to devastating effect.

Review: Delano Smith's "A Message For The DJ" was first released in a distant 2005 haze, but the EP has remained a classic ever since. That's because it's a prime example of the combined powers of old-school Detroit techno and more contemporary waves of European deep house; Smith is a master of this artform, and this particular release, out on Detroit's own Still Music, has the ability to please all sorts of listeners and club-dwellers. The lead tune is full-bodied groove, taking inspiration from the US' heritage, but taking the percussion that one bit closer to what many would term 'minimal'. "Inception Dub" is just as classy and laid-back, a dreamy house assemblage with seductive jazzy nuances, leaving main man Jimpster to remix "A Message For The DJ" into a more driving, more charging tech-house monster that is perhaps the pinnacle of the entire subgenre. A piece of contemporary dance music history, right here...

Review: Once impressively prolific, Anthony Naples has calmed down a little in recent years. Us Mix is his first missive of 2017, and follows on from a year in which he released just two singles, one of which was a two-track salvo of loved-up rollers on The Trilogy Tapes. There's a similarly dreamy, mood-enhancing feel about much of this EP, particularly hazy opener "Sky Flowers". While it does contain some fizzing electronic motifs, these largely play second fiddle to the kind of colourful riffs that recall the halcyon days of Italian dream house. Elsewhere, "Sahara" is an analogue deep house shuffler with tweaked New Jersey organs, "At Ease" is a tactile Balearic house bubbler, and "Us Mix" is a locked-in, string drenched bumper.

Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

Originally released in 1999, Chandler's "Heal My Heart" is a soulful, magnetic house charmer full of loving vibes and euphoria, driven by Treasa Diva Fenni's wonderful vocals - the sort of house tune that even metal fans would dig. Blaze's 2002 "Shine" features with that unmistakable Shelter mix, high and mighty thanks to deep horns and meandering piano keys, leaving Carlton's 1996 bomb "Can't Be Without" to the insanely capable hands of Chez Damier and Ron Trent; their Prescription mix will please even the most proud of diggers who own the original pressing. Recommended and timeless slices of house magic.

Review: Finale Sessions are always ready to support emerging talent in their corner of deep house and techno, and so it goes with Pola who pops up with a clean slate on the 34 Sessions EP. Even if the artist is a newcomer, they clearly have a gift for crafting the kind of kinetic, immersive body music that Finale is known for. "Fallen Idol" keeps things funky and subtly dubbed out, while "Winds Of Vengeance" prefers a tougher rhythmic undercarriage and punchy acid lines. "Reunion" equally moves with purpose, but as with the other tracks on the record there's plenty of soul to match the intensity.

Review: Coming from Golden Teacher alumni, you know that this techno 12" on Fragrant Harbour is going to sport some interesting sonic characteristics. General Ludd doesn't disappoint, with "What" marching out on a devilishly subby kick pattern over which all kinds of post-punk baiting noises splash and splay. "Later Last Night" gets into a more syncopated groove, but that rough and ready quality is still there in abundance. "Making Strange (Locked Groove)" meanwhile heads towards bass music territory with its urgent pace, booming drum machine percussion and bashy demeanour. White Ghost is a stark record focused on rhythms, but as tools go these are some damn fine sounding ones.

On this turn for Finale Sessions she lays down some of her strongest work to date, amping up the dubby tendencies on "Orionids" before heading into a propulsive techno dimension on the wonderfully airy "Light Pollution". EP closer "Echo Park" meanwhile fuses a disparate spread of electronic sounds into a mechanical yet strangely inviting construction for adventurous heads to get lost in.

The long-serving Greek producer has many strings to his bow, but this release finds him tapping into his foundational sound as a steady ticking groove carries a richly produced bed of chimes and tones for the deepest moments in the dance. Where "Feudade" is a lilting, soothing trip, "Vis A Vis" heads into a more mysterious headspace peppered with nagging rhythmic trysts, crafty licks and fulsome bass to get the synapses popping. It's exactly how stripped down house music should be done, inventive to the last and yet utterly danceable.

According to the label themselves, this Manchester born sonic sorcerer is up next for a well overdue record since 2013. Review: It's becoming something of a cliche to describe tech-house tracks as "bouncy", but there's no denying that "Planet Pan", the lead cut from Giammarco Orsini's latest EP, is rubbery and boisterous. The drum track and bassline both doff a cap to the skipping grooves of 4.4 UK garage, though the musical elements surrounding them - spacey chords, bleeping melody lines, and so on - both scream "techno". Elsewhere, the experienced Italian producer melds undulating TB-303 acid lines with a smooth, Motor City influenced tech-house groove on "Divenire", before layering robotic electronics and minor key chords on top of sprightly drum machine beats on pleasing B-side workout "Any Robots Here".

  4. Track 2 (6:15)
Review: That's right, folks, this ain't no reissue! When the names Chiwax and Robert Armani come together, heads instantly turn and think about what year the tunes might be from, but these four house killers are from late 2016, and it's clear that Armani has absolutely no intentions of slowing down any time soon. "BacardI" has the essence of golden era Armani, but there's something more subtle at play, an polished aesthetic that dives deeper into modern techno while retaining all of his original style and flair; the lead tune "Fourty Nine" reinvents the classic Chi-town sound and bursts through the place with a minimal sort of guise. Over on the B-side, "Give You All My Love" slams some hard-ass drums over a skeletal melodic rift and the man's classic use of repetitive vocal samples, which leaves "Track 2" to deliver that inimitable Armani acid...raw and uncompromising as when we first heard it. BIG!

Review: Pocket Money is an independent label based out of Manchester dedicated to releasing modern underground house music with rhythm and soul, influenced by New York, Detroit and Chicago. They return with their fifth release to date, this time collaborating with Polish artist Soul Habitat: an artist firmly rooted in the deeper end of the house pool and this EP is a shining example of his commitment to it. Starting off with the smooth and sexy late night deepness of "8th Avenue" which is reminiscent of local Manchester legend Greg Fenton, the flipside shows off some real panache too with "The Feeling" which is an emotive and uplifting vocal house scorcher (with a razor sharp bassline) and then the absolutely electric Mr Fingers tribute "Class Of 909".

  1. Call Super - "Fluenka Spoke" (9:01)
  2. Shanti Celeste - "Hinoki" (7:13)
Review: For the second installment in Dekmantel's ongoing 10th anniversary series, the well-regarded Dutch label has recruited two notable talents: man-for-all-seasons Call Super, and fast-rising producer Shanti Celeste. Call Super's A-side excursion is a pleasingly tactile, spacey and rubbery affair, with vintage bleeps and Motor City electronics crowding around a drum machine groove that sits somewhere between body popping electro and loved-up deep house. Shanti Celeste takes a different approach on the flip, fusing her usual mood-enhancing synthesizer chords and melodies with a raw, energy-filled rhythm track that owes more to late night techno than the sumptuous deep house of her early productions.

Funk
  1. Move Upstairs (3:31)
  2. Count Your Blessings (4:55)
Review: Well, you can certainly rely on the excellent Daptone label to deliver the finest in blues and soul music, which is exactly what's up with this glorious 7" from The Como Mamas. Hailing from Como, Mississippi, these three ladies know a thing or two about gospel music, especially about how to make it as funky as humanly possible. "Move Upstairs" steps back and forth with the unmistakable Southern flair, all joyous and full of good will, while the B-side, "Count Your Blessings", goes down a moodier, more soulful path that we instantly associate to the deep South and its iconic influence on black music. Wonderful stuff.

  2. Air Raid (5:18)
Review: Dutch analogue punk Vincent Koreman returns as Drvg Cvltvre for some retro devoured techno that suits Bintus' Power Vacuum just perfectly. The New York Haunted boss throws down the tough rave stomper "Bunkerpunch" on the A side which sounds like a euphoric 6AM party down at the Packard Plant Detroit circa '93. On the B side we have got "Air Raid" where the rave theatrics continue, complete with siren sounds, on this wonderful homage to early Underground Resistance with its hands in the air chords and intermittent breakbeat action. Reaching near anthemic moments like Koreman's 2015 killer "Crack Spirit Guide". Following up wicked releases on Poverty Is Violence, Shipwrec and Pinkman: this guy absolute kills it as always!

  4. Viajando (Kejeblos dub) (5:02)
Review: This is a very confident debut from previously unheralded Balearic musician Pablo Color, whose music - on this evidence, at least - is as vibrant as his musical moniker suggests. The Swiss producer begins with the warm and atmospheric "Viajando", where echo-laden electric guitar motifs rise above a gently shuffling dub disco groove. "The Sunset of Puerto Sagunto" sees him sliding into Jonny Nash style ambient territory, while "The Guitar & The Sea" is a crackling, intoxicating, bongo-driven weird-out that sounds like an unlikely hook up between Black Merlin and Mudd. The EP is completed by a fantastic deep space dub of "Viajando" by Kejeblos (with support from Lexx on keyboards). Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".
